Epic Spanish words: Aquelarre (witches’ Sabbath)

Many years ago, I bought a very singular Spanish tarot deck. The designs were rough and primitive but quite beautiful to look at, perhaps for this very reason. Some of the names of the Major Arcana cards were different from the standard decks. For instance, “The Devil” card was called “Aker” and the accompanying illustration was a copy of Éliphas Lévi’s depiction of Baphomet. Later I learned that “aker” meant “he-goat” in Basque.

Aquelarre means roughly “witches’ Sabbath”. It is, in fact, a word of Basque origin. In Basque, the pronunciation is the same but it is spelt “akelarre”. It is believed that it comes from the combination of “aker” (he-goat) and “aurrean” (in front of). Basically, “akelarre” would mean “In front of the He-Goat”.

The Basque Country has a long history of witchcraft. On the 7th of November, 1610, twenty-nine people were judged in one of the biggest witch trials in Spain. Six unrepentant witches were burned alive in Zugarramurdi, five more were burned in effigy, as they had died in prison, and the rest were pardoned. 

Nowadays, “aquelarre” is often used humorously. A reunion of women may be called an “aquelarre”, especially if these women are a bit naughty.

Francisco de Goya’s painting, “The Witches’ Sabbath” (1798) depicts a group of women worshipping the Devil, who appears as a he-goat. The original Spanish name of the painting is “El Aquelarre”. There, now you can say it in Spanish like an expert.

Telesmata is a unique work done by Daniel Schulke a few years back(2018)...they only did 100 copies. It’s theme is the ensouled image, an object, talisman or symbolic image that contains a numinous power or spirit. Daniel uses this technique in his oil painting, which I find really fascinating. This is a similar thought behind the jewelry and ritual tools that I make. Vinum Sabbati 🍷 There is much speculation and awe surrounding the Wine of the Sabbat, also referred to as the Wine of the Devil’s Graal or the Winecup of Midnight’s Table, among other names. Drinking the wine is one of the infamous rites of the Witches’ Supper, an unholy feast partook of witches during their sabbatic gatherings. Through countless tales, alleged ingredients include the ashes of infants, menstrual blood, sexual secretions, poisonous plants, corpse juices, and all manner of bodily humors. With these repellent ingredients, the elixir has been named a poison, an aphrodisiac, and an unholy sacrament, a perversion of the Christian communion. Such a brew is said to bring about corporeal transmutation, fantastic visions, or grant the drinker instantaneous magical knowledge. The willing consumption of the Vinum Sabbati is an act of devotion as well as initiation, and some accounts say that the Devil, in thanks, makes the wine taste sweet on the witches’ lips, despite its abhorrent ingredients. The Horned Lord Applique Tapestry. This is the third version of the Horned Lord Stang, that I have created. In this one he is wearing a green tunic. He is based on a very real stang headed stang that live at the Witch Wood Shrine at Ravens Knoll camp grounds in Ontario Canada. And last autumn in Canada he got a bath and a new set of clothes. He looks mighty fine and feels very ready for the new decade. . The horned lord is the lord of the wild forest, but also has urban enough manners that he can sometimes be found in cities and towns. He speaks of magic and mystery, and things that found in between, in between trees, rivers, stones, houses, doorways and in between words. He is the master of liminal spaces. . [Image Description.
