I thought I would get in on the #topnine thing this year! It's been a really amazing year. I moved to Leisureland and began my #leisurelandchronicles adventure, leaving family and friends and a lot of useless junk in Portland. It is really a new adventure. Before now I never had a woodstove, or endless train tracks to walk down, or had to take care of chickens. I had to sell almost everything I owned to fit into a tiny house/cabin and live like we were camping until we figured out a rudimentary power bank. Christmas tree hunting has always been an Oregonian privilege I've taken for granted. I grew up near farms and rural areas and was super lucky to cut down Christmas trees with my family every year, searching for the perfect Noble fir and debating on how much space between the branches was the right amount of space. This year my family went to Kraxberger Farms where we walked among the trees with some beautiful dogs, got to see piglets snuggling under a heat lamp (check my stories!), and drink hot chocolate. "Brewing" up some lucky pennies. One of those spells that just came to me while emptying my pockets. I haven't had the energy to clean my passed-down cauldron, but I've had it sitting on the cooktop of my woodstove gathering the energy of the happily crackling fire and making me feel all the more like a witch in the woods. Then I had the inspiration to put my pennies in there, inviting in prosperity and charming the pennies at the same time. I'm not sure what's going to happen next, as the ritual is coming to me casually. It feels a bit like a devotional act and prayer, but also like one of those rare real spells where I am connected to the live wire. I haven't gone to a pumpkin patch since I was a kid, but today my sister @miss_earhart and I visited the most delightful one. We came home with seven pumpkins, three stalks of broom corn, three candles that smell like various heavily spiced fruits, and two ceramic jars. I might go back for a really big pumpkin that I loved but just couldn't justify getting while living in a tiny house. I'm already trying to figure out where my three go (but I am determined to find a place!). It was a wonderful day, spent laughing and taking endless photos of each other. It was one of those perfect days that is actually, genuinely perfect. * * More photos to come in the days ahead. We went to the Mushroom Festival at Mount Pisgah Arboretum! We were so distracted by all the beautiful mushrooms that I totally blanked on taking more photos than this selfie with @artofnidavellir in the parking lot. But it was so much fun! While out hiking and looking for chanterelles, I found deer bones. We had picked up the big ones on a previous hike, but had missed quite a few smaller ones, including a vertabrae with a blackberry vine growing through it. I had never seen Beetlejuice before seeing it on the big screen at the Joy Cinema last night, and I think it is about to become my go-to Halloween movie. The Joy Cinema is in its element all October; they run classic monster movies once a week during the rest of the year, and nobody does Halloween better than they do. Classic horror movie posters along the walls and local beer on tap put you in the mood to enjoy the experience of going to the movies. Follow that up with quirky slideshows of roadside attractions and carnivals before the previews begin, and you've got a recipe for a truly charming experience. The owners really care about movies and the experience of it; I don't think they would work as hard as they do if they did not love what they do. I am so lucky to be the proud owner of a @byamillia necklace! My beloved @artofnidavellir bought her for me as a surprise for my two year anniversary of being a witch. She is beautiful, almost a mint color and incredibly reassuring as she lays on my chest. And I think her sister is still for sale! I realize I haven't done a "Get to Know The Witch" thing yet, and I've got new followers. A basic rundown of the person behind the cat photos: I'm almost 25, I've been a witch for two years, and I've been practically married to a blacksmith for those magical two years. I live on the Siuslaw river on a commune founded by hippie preppers getting ready for Y2K, and I love it. If you want to know more about me, keep reading! * * @artofnidavellir and I met through the Society for Creative Anachronism, a worldwide group of historical reenactors. They introduced me to paganism and to the Norse culture; without them, I would never have found Àsatru or Gaelic Polytheism. I can barely remember a time in my life when it didn't permeate my life in subtle ways. I primarily reenact two personas: 1585 Scotland, where I do Shakespearean performances; and Vorangian-era Norse, where I practice my craft and sing Norse songs. * * In a previous life, I lived in Portland, OR and Ashland, OR, where I was an actress and theatre technician. That changed when I started showing symptoms of agoraphobia and social phobia. I tried to go to school three times, and in the end, I was stuck in my house missing the days when I did meaningful things. I turned to witchcraft to give my life meaning. * * I became a witch when my dresser was haunted by what I lovingly call a "sexual angst-ergeist" from the previous owner, who kept a sort of shrine to his lack of love life on top. It would sneak up behind me when I went from my bed to my door, so that shit needed to go. Soon after, I was scrolling through Tumblr for inspiration, doing research on galdrastafir, and talking with a goddess. * * I wear this shirt proudly. My ancestry, chosen and inherited, is full of witches and spirit workers. My great-grandmother was an oracle, my grandfather an exorcist. My goddess, Freyja, was burned in Odin's hall three times for the corrupting influence of seidr, and she rose from the ashes all three times. I have been insanely busy this last week and a half. I've been home a whopping total of two days, spending the last week in Portland visiting family and going to concerts. Summer is starting to wind down, so we are trying to fit in as much river time before sweater season kicks in. Hashbrown has been enjoying jumping on rocks, needing no help from us humans to rock hop nearly across the whole river. She voluntarily jumped up there to get a better view of the river (plus she just likes to be up high). We spent the entire day down in the water soaking up the last of the warmth and getting a little sunburnt in the process. - - This photo was too large for Instagram, so I tried adding the white on the edges.
