Discworld inktober day 22 - Esmerelda Weatherwax

Granny Weatherwax was the strongest witch in the Discworld books. When Sir Terry Pratchett found out he was dying, he needed to say goodbye to his fans. He did that through the passing of the beloved character of Granny Weatherwax in “The Shepherd’s Crown”

Even though when he was already gone when I started reading the discworld books, it was still very heartbreaking. She also kept bees as part of her specialty and after she passed, her protégé had to tell the bees. I’ve always felt like us the readers were Sir Terry’s bees.

You know those posts that are about like Karens using their power for good and priveleged people loudly complaining to landlords/managers/etc. about illegal or abusive behavior? That's basically what the discworld witches do, especially Granny Weatherwax. I cannot count the number of scenes that are just her walking into a situation that has nothing to do with her, clocking an injustice, and making the perpetuator's life a living hell until it's fixed. I won't lie, she's the type of character to make the lives of nice employees and managers kind of difficult, but when someone's not fulfilling their social obligation to care for others she puts the fear of Weatherwax in them.

FOTD #070 : wolf lichen! (letharia vulpina)

wolf lichen is a fruticose lichenised fungus in the family parmeliaceae. it occurs across the pacific northwest & is common on branches that have been stripped of their bark. they have a history of being used for medicine (by indigenous people of the northwest plateau) & dyeing (by the klamath people).

the big question : can i bite it?? no - this fungus is poisonous to meat-eaters. (vulpinic acid)

l. vulpina description :

"the thallus, or vegetative body, has a fruticose shape — that is, shrubby & densely branched — & a bright yellow to yellow-green, or chartreuse color, although the color will fade in drier specimens. its dimensions are typically 2 to 7 cm (0.8 to 3 in) in diameter. the vegetative reproductive structures soredia & isidia are present on the surface of the thalli, often abundantly."

Granny Weatherwax is one of my favorite characters in any piece of media ever, and I was recently thinking about why I like her so much. There are so many reasons, but I think one of them is that she's oddly comforting. Yes, she's rude and prickly and scary, but she always helps people when it matters. There's just something nice about the idea of someone who would always help you if you were in serious trouble, no matter what your problem is or even if you've talked bad about her. You could have spread a rumor about her and then have an eldritch monster about to kill you, and Granny Weatherwax would step in, send it running, and then give you a stern talking to while treating your wounds. In conclusion, Weatherwax 2024
