The Sandai Shrine is famous for its beautiful old wisteria, called "Sunabizuri no Wisteria" (Sand-rubbed Wisteria) because the spikes grow so long that they rub against the ground. The trees are about 450 years old.

Today, a faded nameplate that is very difficult to read, though the characters are both very easy! I actually had to ask for help on the second one and was embarrassed once I learned what the name was. Can you make it out?
内藤 is read Naitō, or very, very rarely Naito, Natō, or Uchifuji.
内 is read うち, ナイ, or ダイ. It means inside, within, between, among, or house/home. Remember the opposite pair 内・外 [うち・そと or ナイ・ガイ] in/out.
藤 is read ふじ, トウ, or ドウ. It means wisteria. It shows up quite often in surnames.

Simplicity #160: Wisterias / Existence and Time
🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿
Organic or inorganic
Everything on earth is governed by
The law of constant change.
Birth/ growth/ decline and disappearance.
These wisteria flowers also follow the rule
As they are now in the process
Of declining…and returning to the earth.
Yet something unchanging exist in them.
A wise says: It cannot transform into other
Creatures, say, animals such as fish or dog.
A wisteria cannot turn into a sunflower
An amaryllis cannot be a cherry blossom.
Some elements, he continues, within
The constant change does not change:
There is something that always
Makes a flower a flower, a fish a fish.
This can be called ‘Real existence’ in Buddhism
Or ‘Idea’ in Plato of Athen
Spiritual Existence in heavenly world.

reading demon slayer: chapter 4 name breakdown
in chapter 4, there are just 2 names that i thought were worth diving into. the first is not a proper name but a title.
when explaining the history of demons and demon slayers to tanjirou, urokodaki calls himself a
育手
the reading given for this word is そだて. 育 (そだ) shows up in many words and carries a meaning of raising or rearing something. for example, it is used in the verb 育てる, which means to raise, to rear, to bring up AND to train, to teach, to educate AND to promote the growth of, to nurture, to foster, to develop.
手 (て) is a very common kanji that typically means hand or arm. when used as a suffix, though, its meaning changes. in 育手 the 手 is similar to the english suffixes -er and -ist.
from this we can conclude that 育手 means something like teacher, trainer, one who raises. and indeed in the official english 育手 is translated as trainer. however, i think there's another aspect to this title that the english does not capture.
since 手 does also mean hand, you could interpret 育手 as having a more intimate meaning. instead of a simple trainer, urokodaki is hand raising his disciples. he becomes a father figure to them as he nurtures them and fosters the development of their skills. is that a bit of a stretch? maybe. but given how deeply urokodaki cares for his students, i think it's fitting.
the second name is the name of the place where urokodaki says final selection will be held. it is called
藤襲山
which is pronounced ふじかさねやま. 藤 (ふじ) is wisteria. 襲 (かさね) with that particular reading means pile, heap, layers. more specifically, 襲 can refer to the layers of clothing worn under an overcoat, or to the combination of colors created by layering garments. those two meanings give the name a more cozy and aesthetic feeling, in my opinion. and 山 (やま) is, of course, mountain. all together that gives us Wisteria Heap Mountain or Mountain of Layers of Wisteria. the official english just has it as Mount Fujikasane. again, unimaginative, but i suppose it gets the point across.
and that concludes the second name breakdown for demon slayer! i hope this was insightful or at least interesting. i'm glad there were only 2 names this time because i feel like i got to go more in depth with them. anyway, thanks for reading, and please look forward to the next post!

Since I have wisteria on the brain, today's surname is 藤間, read Fujima or Tōma. It belongs to about 10,700 people nationwide.
藤 is read ふじ, トウ, or ドウ. It means wisteria, of course!
間 is a kanji we've touched on but never properly covered. It means interval (of time) or (physical) space. It's read あいだ, ま, あい, カン, or ケン (though that last one is kinda rare). The radicals are 門 gate with 日 day/sun inside.
