Say Their Names | Michelle Ho: From the description: “… The mirrors list names of black people, their ages, and the dates of their deaths. The piece invites viewers to confront - literally, to "face together” - the loss of black lives at the hands of police and the ways in which racism keeps our world, and particularly the black body, from living freely..”.

Wisdom 2.0 2018: A Bridge Between SIYLI & SFUSD (?)
Tumblr media
Wisdom 2.0. Hilton SF Union Square. March 2018. San Francisco, CA
I’m thrilled to be taking part in SIYLI's 2018 Teacher Training Program beginning in April 👍🏽👏🏽✌🏾💪🏽🖐🏽🙏🏽 😀
The opportunity & scholarship (thank you SIYLI!) couldn’t have come at a better time, as I’ve started to feel a bit stagnant (ironically!) these past few years, teaching solely dance.
That, accompanied by general burnout, physical fatigue, and exhaustion (I think), inspired me to take this year of leave / personal sabbatical after 7 and a half years of teaching; To step back & re-evaluate where I’ve come from (Artists In The Classroom) where I’m at, and where I’m going.... And perhaps most importantly, how best to realize my vision of transforming our public education system into one that weaves the practices of kindness, empathy, wisdom, compassion, social-emotional awareness, and resiliency into the fabric of its’ culture. And effectively teaches & models these practices in every classroom, regardless of zip code.
With this in mind, I thought through & wrote a possible Mission Statement:
----------------------------------------------------
My Mission is to serve as a bridge between SFUSD & SIYLI, working with teams & individuals throughout the district to deepen & support practices of empathy, wisdom, resilience, social-emotional awareness, and compassion in educational settings.
“Boots on the Ground, Love Warriors!” 👢💪🏽 ❤️
----------------------------------------------------
•SIYLI •SFUSD
We’ll see! (:-)

Thanks!

Wisdom 2.0 2018 Unconference | Google HQ | Blogging In Systems (Possibilities?)
Tumblr media
Wisdom 2.0 Unconference. Google HQ. February 2018. Mountain View, CA
I facilitated my fourth session at Wisdom 2.0’s Unconference at Google HQ this year. Last year I did Artists In Institutions (Possibilities?), in 2016, Teaching Without an Agenda, and in 2015, Authenticity in Hierarchical Systems.
I’m currently on a year’s leave / personal sabbatical from teaching dance at the elementary level, and using the time, in part, to reflect on what it means to have a voice on-line, while simultaneously being a boots-on-the-ground educator: the responsibilities, the costs, the benefits, and the disruptive & transformative potentials.
Next year, I might like to explore what leadership means, and the relationship between the archetype of the artist and the archetype of the politician.
My gratitude to all participants, for sharing & attending. Notes are below.

Blogging in Systems

IDEO hacks (small, innovative, low stakes pivots, you can easily try out in an organization)

“Instead of seeing this big monolith we call the school system, and throwing one’s hands up, how about focusing on how one can navigate one’s way around & through it?”
Good question to focus on when you feel over whelmed, or like giving up!
How do we rethink public & private education?
Patrick Cook-Deegan
Project Way Finder
School Retool
(Tom Kelly?)
Michael Ray – Creativity in Business (good book)
Rebels & Insurgents ;) For good!
“There are others out there, trying to do what you you’re doing. There is community.” (Great to hear! Cause it’s been getting lonely.).
- Genentech
- Granite Construction
- Men’s Warehouse
All of these have some kind of innovation criteria in common – all part of the Fortune 500 list (?) (don’t remember exactly how this came up in our discussion..).
----------
A friend, who participated in this session, shared some great clarifications / notes, which are below. Thanks Dave!:
Dave’s contributions, below, were added to this post at 10:01am on Sunday, May 20th, 2018:
Rebels & Insurgents ;) For good!
“There are others out there, trying to do what you you’re doing. There is community.” (Great to hear! Cause it’s been getting lonely.).
Michael Ray – Creativity in Business (good book).  Michael was one of those "rebels/insurgents" who taught a course called "Creativity in Business" at Stanford Business School for over 20 years.  He overcame a LOT of resistance from a lot of "traditional" business school faculty about whether such a course belonged there (he started teaching it in the early 1980's).  His new ideas and very heart-centered framework found traction in a seemingly unrelated set of companies:
Genentech Granite Construction Men’s Wearhouse
A number of years ago one of his students was scratching his head about what those three could possibly have in common.  Then he was scanning Fortune Magazine's list of "100 best places to work" and saw those three companies on that list.  Which way does the "causal link" go?  (Good places to work because they embraced new ideas about creativity?  Or they were good places to work already and therefore were the kind of places that would be be receptive to bringing in new ideas about creativity?)

Wait, hold on, not quite sure where I’m at...

OH, Ok got it! ;)

Wisdom 2.0 2018: Mindfulness, Capitalism, and the Emerging Consciousness: Rich Fernandez (SIYLI) - I Agree! This Level of Poverty Is A Crime.
Tumblr media
Wisdom 2.0 . Hilton SF Union Square. February 2018. San Francisco, CA
Personal Reflection: View of individuals in front of Glide Memorial Church, from a room in the Hilton SF Union Square | Rich’s talk: “Mindfulness, Capitalism, and the Emerging Consciousness”: Thank you Rich, for bringing up Glide! And for speaking to the stark contrast of this conference experience, and the individuals sitting right across the street, in front of Glide Memorial Church. I couldn’t agree more, “… this level of poverty, given our know-how, is a crime.” And the invitation to inquiry, imperative:
“What is the cultural logic of capitalism that enables this to be so?”

So excited for our Wisdom 2.0 conference! @wisdom2conference One of the things I'm working on this year (believe it or not!) is taking fewer notes, and just letting myself enjoy the event, the community, and connecting.
Opening / Community Connection starts @ 7pm 🤗
