There once lived a young man who was very sad and unsatisfied. He went to visit a Zen temple, thinking this may help.
“You must know that I am quite useless,” the boy explained upon meeting the Zen master of the temple. “I have never committed myself to anything for any length of time, and I have no real skills.…

Wisdom 2.0: The School Of Following Life: A Special Year Long Course With Soren Gordhamer: Scholarship Application (May 2018)
The School Of Following Life. May 2018. Somewhere on the Internet.
I’m applying for a scholarship to Wisdom 2.0′s The School Of Following Life. Like with my scholarship application to Strozzi Institute’s Embodied Leadership Level One, answering these questions was helpful to me as I reflect on where I’ve been, where I am at, and where I’m going. The content also highlights the realities of being a public educator in San Francisco - incredibly rewarding in many, many ways, and simultaneously, financially unsustainable, for me at least (I have more thoughts on this topic, that I’m planning to explore in future writings).
Below are my answers to some of the questions asked to all applicants, and highlight the meat & potatoes of where I’m at.
......
3. What interests you about attending this course?
Everything written in it's description resonates with me. I feel as though I'm truly at a cross-roads, and like there's something that's been gestating inside me for years now, that's ready to emerge. In fact, it feels like it almost can't not emerge, if that makes any sense -- and that's both exciting and scary, and I think I, and it, would benefit from & appreciate support through the process. More below.
4. What is the current state of your life? Happily working, sadly working, in between jobs, etc?
For the past 7 years I've been working with the San Francisco Unified School District as an intinerant dance teaching artist, blogging about my work, and studying both my settings and myself, through an ethnographic, sociological, spiritual, and artistic lens. With the exception of this school year (as I’m on a year’s leave / personal sabbatical), I work with approximately 1,500 - 2000 elementary age students per year, as well as hundreds of teachers, parents, staff, and administrators. Concurrently, I’ve been attending Wisdom 2.0 conferences & meet-ups, and practicing Transcendental Meditation since 2012.
The question I’ve been carrying, and continue to carry through my journey is “How do we create more loving, supportive, equitable, human-centric systems?”
I just LLC-ed a little less than two weeks ago (still getting used to that idea), and just last Wednesday let the district know that I won't be returning next year. I've received awards (SFUSD Dream Catcher Award, SFUSD Rave (Recognizing All Valuable Employees), and nominations (I've been nominated for Teacher of the Year). Generally speaking, my work couldn't be more well received; From an outside-educator's perspective it could seem crazy to part from a job in the arts that's both stable & unionized. And simultaneously, I feel pulled toward something bigger that I can't explain. I feel similarly to how I felt while walking the Camino (2004, 2008, 2010) - pulled & called, and in the process of making sense of it all. To myself, primarily, and also to my colleagues and a system that operates differently, I think.
My blogs (all housed here: www.artistsintheclassroom.com) also seem like they've started to serve a purpose that's bigger than I am, and I'm trying to figure out what that is, what to do with this, let's call it "voice", and why, for all these years, for no reimbursement, I've felt so compelled to take notes & photographs, and reflect & write, and send my work out into the universe through the internet.
5. What would you say is the primary vision or mission that drives you?
I think my work has been trying to answer this question, primarily: “How do we create more loving, supportive, equitable, human-centric systems?"
I also - out of personal self respect, and respect for my art & craft - feel there must be a way to make a substantial contribution toward this vision AND earn an income that's commensurate to it's quality & impact.
I have a deep drive to support individuals (both little & big :) in being embodied, moving, and dancing, as well as make a descent living that enables me to both live & save in the city in which I teach.
This is what this vision looks like:
•Dance. In. Community :)

Wisdom 2.0: New Leader Summit | The Computer History Museum (May 2018): My Notes
Wisdom 2.0. New Leader Summit. The Computer History Museum. May 2018. Mountain View, CA
Disclaimer: As with all of my published notes from workshops or conferences, these are in no way comprehensive. Nor are they a literal summation of what was said. They are simply my notes, my interpreted, perspective-ed reflections, photos, and jottings, that occasionally combine my own records & thoughts with those of the speakers. There might be some typos.
Good Morning! ☀️
The Vision of the New Leader | Soren Gordhamer (Wisdom 2.0):
“I didn’t just want to do it for 30 minutes, it needed more breathing room.”
“Maybe instead of having all the answers, a leader knows how to ask the right questions”.
Wisdom & Compassion in Business | Scott Shute (LinkedIn):
Old wisdom is making its way into boardrooms.
Holding the tension between what’s easy and what’s right.
“You’re going to have to make that right.”
Do what you say you’re going to do.
Your work matters.
Finding our community & making the world a little bit smaller.
“Maybe they’re going to want to have you deprogrammed if you talk about this...” (on mindfulness & meditation..).
The tension between one’s authentic self, and the person we’re brining to work.
My question: How do we hold that? And how do we close that?
The Growth Edge.
Business As Community | Giving Back and Moving Forward | Ebony Frelix (Salesforce) | Soren Gordhamer (Wisdom 2.0):
If you can’t describe your job to your Mom or a third grader, you’ve failed. (Agreed! )
Modeling starts at home, and in the community.
Stressing the value of focus.
You only have so long to burn the candle at both ends.
Battling what’s taught about leadership and the leader I was becoming.. (me too).
Balancing the drive between growth & results, and growth & vulnerability.
Something that you thought was a disaster, and failed, was actually something people admired.
Often, the meditation room is something equated with the looser room (glad this is changing ).
The opportunity to unplug at work.
Vet & EMPLOY.
Not every job needs a degree.
Equity In Tech | Shifting Power Dynamics And Reimagining Leadership | Scott Shute (LinkedIn) | (Karla Monterosso (Code2040):
Started at the intersection of poverty & health work.
“The whole next economic & social contract of the country is being built in the cloud, and no one that looks like me is there.”
Often companies do not have enough people of color concentrated in one place to understand their experience, and it’s not safe for those people to speak up.
Software creates the world ethos; you’re going to have a future developed by what’s happening right now.
AI is not machine learning, AI is pattern matching, and those patterns are being discerned / navigated by humans.
Our program is set up with the understanding that “minorities” are not the problem.
Temporary strategy? Permanent strategy? Where is it?
Failing to evaluate their own hiring processes.
You want & need data.
It’s not a feelings problem – we don’t need to feel better about having more diversity in the work place - it’s an operations & management problem.
Setting goals that give us direction.
Evaluate your systems & processes..
“Stanford” is not a skill.
Tech Justice League.
This is not about lowering the bar; it’s about creating it (Woot Woot! ).
By 2040 there are going to be more Latin & Black people in America than anyone else.
Affinity groups are being asked to do the heavy lifting that leadership should be doing. (Agreed. I’d say that’s true in public education as well).
We need training in how gender bias and racial bias operates at a deep level.
We’re treating inclusion as an add-on program, and that’s not right.
Leaders need to understand the experience that their ethos has created.
How do personal & institutionalized power work? (My question as well).
The flow of data, and capital.
WE COULD BE BUILD SUCH AN EXCITING WORLD!
We don’t have to take advantage of some people to make the pie bigger. (Amen! ).
Wisdom @ Work | The Modern Elder | Chip Conley (Joie De Vivre) | Soren Gordhamer (Wisdom 2.0):
Liberating “Elder” from “Elderly”.
We’re living longer, and power is moving younger.
Intergenerational Collaboration.
A wisdom seeker as much as a wisdom keeper.
Rethinking what it means to be valuable & relevant in the workplace.
Rites of passage happen in cultures to help people through transformative places in their life.
How do we help re-value, and re-purpose people @ mid-life?
Age agnostic – valuing people regardless of age.
Re-purposing yourself at any age.
Emotional Intelligence grows over time.
Editing your identity – What is it that is no longer serving you? Let it go.
Environmental Mastery.
What & How are optimization questions.
“Why” & “What If” actually uncover blind spots.
Asking questions that uncover blind spots…. That’s wisdom.
Evolve, Learn, Collaborate.
DQ – Digital Intelligence.
EQ – Emotional Intelligence.
A confidant, is also a person that gives you confidence.
Who in the organization do you go to for advice?
Who in the organization is generating invisible productivity?
Environmental Mastery – Where are you putting yourself when you’re at your best?
On reclaiming terms.. “Queer”, for example.
Owning the term doesn’t just allow you to re-claim it, it allows you to organize around it.
Find the habitat that is going to embrace the demographic that you are.
Encapsulate your wisdom in a way that helps people “get it” very quickly.
Thinking of systems & organizational issues around a societal problem.
The system needs to be changed.
Changing the system & disrupting ______ (cant’ read my writing) in the work place.
It’s not just about the length of your life, it’s about the depth of your life.
ERG = Employee Resource Group
Less than 10% of companies in Silicon Valley have ERG’s for people who are older.
How do we find spaciousness?
Being curious enough to not know the answer in advance.
Collateral costs & benefits of decision-making.
Re: Coaching – Is this a knowledge share? Or is it creating more internal awareness, and awareness development?
Community Connections | Harnessing Group Wisdom | Scott Shute (LinkedIn):
You have one mouth, and two ears.
Lean, teach, share.
A book that was recommended to me in our breakout group: Unstoppable, Cynthia Kersey
Coaching The New Leader | Jonathan Rosenfeld (Trium Group) | Michelle Gale (Author):
Educating leaders of teams on systems theory. (YES!)
How do we need people to contribute to the room?
Being personally responsible for the success of the group.
How is this team operating as a highly complex system?
It’s the most adaptable that succeed, not the smartest or the strongest.
On Coaching – You don’t want to foster dependency, you want to come in, do an effective intervention, and then get out. (YES!)
Fostering behavior that’s in everyone’s best interest.
What serves both us & the group?
What do you notice in some of the healthiest company cultures?
It starts at the top (Indeed!).
Courage (to venture into uncomfortable spaces) & Humility (to trust the process).
Care about people.
BREATHE
The Role of Diversity In Tech | Eddie Medina (BetterUp) | Jennifer Fonstad (Venture Investor) | Rachel Sheinbein (Lemnos):
Public trust & moral leadership.
Not just building valuable companies, building good companies.
There’s power in diversity from an economic perspective.
Teams perform better when they’re diverse.
#FoundersForChange
Flipping the power dynamic.
A lot of women & minority groups are often told “You need to work harder than anyone else..”, “Don’t stand out too much, don’t piss anyone off..”
You need to be able to take risks & fail, if you want to do anything audacious & big, and simultaneously, if you fail, you just confirm everyone’s unspoken beliefs.”
Vacillation between fear & greed.
Being committed to being a diverse employer from Day 1.
Building an inclusive culture.
Bringing diversity to a company doesn’t really matter if you’re not allowed to voice anything (YES! – Think this is a prevalent norm in student & educator culture in Public Ed.).
The problem is treating inclusion as an HR Program vs. a business strategy (it need to be a business strategy)!
The hard thing is to be courageous in environments where you don’t feel like your voice will be valued or heard. (YES!)
(#MeToo) - that sense that we’re innocent, and then there are those bad apples… Isn’t helpful to anyone.
A reminder about the biases that everybody brings to the world.
The New Leader | Harnessing Wisdom & Compassion | Jeff Weiner (LinkedIn) | Soren Gordhamer (Wisdom 2.0):
Spoke a lot about Ray Chambers
Embodied Leadership (YES ).
Walking the walk.
You need to recruit & onboard against your culture & values.
It’s not just about the What, it’s also about the How.
Transformation, Integrity, Honor, and Results.
What we’re looking for:
Steep learning curves, vertical learning curves.
People who don’t take themselves too seriously.
People who you look forward to coming in to work with everyday.
A multi-varied equation in terms of the constituents you’re trying to service.
Is this in service of our vision?
When you’re an individual contributor you tend to be more focused on the work, and more in your own head.
Awareness.
Managing with compassion.
There’s a difference between egocentricism and egomaniacism.
Expecting other people to do things the way you did is extremely uncompassionate.
It requires a lot of energy to manage compassionately, to sit with someone when they’re suffering.
There’s a difference between Managing, Coaching, and Mentoring. Rare individuals can do all three, but they’re different.
Managing = making sure the work is getting done.
Coaching = helping someone learn & grow.
Mentoring = helping someone understand what they ultimately want to do with their career, or life, and then sharing your experiences with them.
Re: Checking in with someone right away if there seems to be tension, or a misunderstanding. A certain kind of intensity – we need to address this right now.
Seeking to understand, so we need to be in conversation.
If you don’t nip it in the bud right away, if becomes way more than the actual issue, because they might speak about it with their colleagues, and then their team, and before you know it, it becomes about the team, and then perhaps the department, and eventually thousands of people.. And then all the energy goes into navigating the politics of that.
You never want to be giving your power away to things you cant control (YES!).
Education Reform, and managing compassionately.
“A Class Divided”
Compassion should be the operating system upon which we teach everything else.
Actually operationalizing the vision statement.
Creating economic opportunity for every member of the global workforce.
We don’t need other people’s charity. We need access to opportunity.
There are fundamental difference between managers & leaders.
The clarity of ones vision, the courage of ones conviction, and the ability to lead from both of these places.
Who are you serving through your products & services? And even more importantly, who are you not serving?
Start Ups That Work | Investing In The New Leader | Gus Tai (Trinity Ventures) | Tim Chang (Mayfield) | Ann Crady Weiss (True Ventures) | Michelle Gale (Author):
Emotional intelligence & grit; Founding is a lonely job.
Just because someone was one way before doesn’t mean they will be that way in the future.
There’s a lot of risk.
80% of all start-ups don’t even return capital.
Venture Capitalists (VC’s) questions when considering funding / backing:
What is this person like when they’re at play?
What are they like when they’re under deep stress?
Do they know their core wound, and are they aware of it?
(On a promising founder..): They deeply know who they are and what they want to do, and what is right for them at that moment…. And how to get the resources they need.
The best way to be different is to be true to yourself.
(For founders of prior failed start ups, that want to try again): Outcome doesn’t matter, but I’d like to know what they learned from it, what was their learning.
A learning opportunity & a lack of luck.
Something that keeps you going when the times gets tough..
When you feel present & at ease, you’ll probably feel wiser.
The human mind clutches on recency.
All misery comes from over-attachment to outcomes, and if outcomes are all you talk about, well…
The narrative that’s working really well in venture capital is diversity.
Our wealth disparity is greater than ever.
Advice for a potential entrepreneur (like me )
You’re never as good as you think you are.
You’re never as bad as you think you are.
Develop a practice of self-compassion & kindness.
Who are you really? Keep double clicking on that.
What do you really want? Keep double clicking on that.
What are you in service to? Keep double clicking on that.
On pitching: Explain why you are uniquely qualified and have an unfair advantage to do this.
Show me why now is a particularly interesting time.
Sell it.
If you don’t believe it, I’m not going to believe it.
Leadership As Alignment | Directing without Dictating | Joshua Reeves (Gusto) | Soren Gordhamer (Wisdom 2.0):
What does a CEO do?
They’re a steward of the purpose of the company.
Doing an “all hands”.
We went from 50 people to 500 people (!), in a relatively short amount of time.
How have you navigated that growth?
How have you maintained culture throughout that growth?
No one there wears shoes. Seriously.
A program focused purely on motivation & values alignment.
Focus on “Alignment” when hiring.
It’s not about a company trying to get someone, or an individual trying to convince someone to hire them, it’s “are our paths / values aligned?” (YES! And I’d say this can only happen when neither side is desperate.).
Show, don’t tell.
Am I eager to say what I’m doing? Do I want to evangelize about it? Or am I in stealth mode?
Introspection – the why & then the how.
Entrepreneurs have to be inherently optimistic.
“It’s just really fun to fix stuff.”
Can you fix something?
Can you do it in a way you are proud of?
Wisdom-Based Leadership | Lessons In Guiding People & Teams | Soren Gordhamer (Wisdom 2.0) | Karen May (Google):
Originally she was an organizational psychologist & coach.
As a leader, it’s important to own the seat that you’re in, and take that responsibility seriously, and also know that you’re not the seat that you are in.
Leader with responsibility vs. Leader with ego.
At the end of the day we’re just talking about humans trying to get things done, through & with other people.
It’s really difficult to give something up that’s worked for you in the past.
What got you here, won’t get you there – (Conditions of growth, from my perspective – the next leg of the journey requires new skills).
Watching people trying to unlearn old habits.
When we look at old successes, where we came from: luck & skill -- putting it together -- is almost worse, because you can’t help but feel like it had something to do with you.
Withholding feedback from someone is also a disservice.
Being aware of your conditioning.
You have to be self aware enough to know what your intentions are in giving the feedback.
Often people giving it really want to see the other person be successful.
Sharing that you get what they’re about is helpful.
“And I think you’re getting in your own way in couple of ways..”
“If I were you, I would sure hope that someone was telling me this.”
Check your intensions first, then think about how you’re going to deliver feedback.
If there’s a power dynamic, give choice to the receiver about how & when it will happen.
If we continue on, doing exactly what we’re doing today, we won’t be successful. Because you’re not evolving.
At Google you’re rated on your feedback giving, and it’s public.
The world is a difficult place to be in if you don’t want to hear feedback.
Things need to be taken seriously, and also not very seriously.
What gives you the most satisfaction at the end of the day?
Self-Awareness.
Being open to the possibility of working in a different way.
Compassion.
Gratitude.
Enabling others & seeing them.
Inspiration.
Bringing Mindfulness To High Performance Environments | Scott Shute (LinkedIn) | Alexis Pokorny (Mindful Millenial Leader):
Overnight, I lost 48% of my business.
People have been recognized at an operational level.
Doing an “All Hands” call.
(On mindfulness in the workplace): It’s got to be relevant to the business, and align with its’ goals.
And then just start DOING IT!
Productivity & Fulfillment
Perspective.
Results?
More thoughtfulness in hiring.
Meetings take less time.
Giving people permission to leave; Having the right people in the room.
An understanding of what’s being said that isn’t actually spoken?
Closing | Soren Gordhamer (Wisdom 2.0):
The Universe is here to help us. It’s on our side. How do we partner with it? 😊

The Future of Wisdom 2.0 | In Conversation with Soren Gordhamer | LinkedIn (March 2017) | A Personal Reflection
Cesar Chavez Elementary. Nov. 2016. LinkedIn. March 2017. San Francisco, CA
Written on March 9th, 2017.
Really enjoyed the conversation at The Future of Wisdom 2.0 last night. Having attended the conference for several years, and witnessed it's growth, it was great to have a voice in the direction it's taking.
On a related note, I was proud to have shared some input verbally; Generally, I struggle with public speaking, or sharing in groups -- privileging writing, dance, or photography instead. Speaking in public (when not teaching) has always been a challenge, and I sometimes leave gatherings feelings frustrated that I didn't have the courage to share my perspective, or confidence in the fact that I can express it clearly and succinctly; Last night I shared that I'd like to see there be more space created to discuss issues around income inequality - that many of the corporations that are now embracing mindfulness & meditation, and incorporating it into their Company Culture -- actually serve to perpetuate: How about we take a mindful & loving look right into our own backyard?
I currently work with 4 elementary schools in the SFUSD. The school I work with on Wednesday, Cesar Chavez Elementary, is located in the heart of the Mission. Arriving at work, I watch all the tech busses drive through the neighborhood, and think: "Wow. As a city, we sure are diverse. Too bad there isn't much integration.” For some reason, I can't seem to ignore the fact that a majority of the companies I so admire, who's products I love, and who's company cultures, I hope, will begin to inform and inspire public education, are also inadvertently responsible for many of my students and their families being pushed out of their homes in the Mission. Where are our conversations around that? And where is our meditation and mindfulness on this front? Like Jon Kabat-Zinn said at the conference "Social Justice is not some second daughter phenomenon." It is absolutely at the core of what mindfulness is all about. We can't just use mindfulness & meditation as a convenient tool to feel more calm, and better about our mergers & acquisitions. Or as a cure for the loneliness & isolation we feel, living a majority of our lives behind screens -- we also need to use it to look at the impact our work is having out in the wider community. It's these contradictions that I'm trying to straddle. And I'm not that flexible :-/
Furthermore, as an artist, I can't ignore the fact that that beat that's bumpin' in the background at our 5th-floor-loft-wine-tasting, might very well have been written & produced by artists from, let’s say the Mission, who can either no longer afford to live there, or who got evicted so those lofts could be built -- But they weren't invited to the party. -- How come?!?
How, as a community, do we hold these contradictions? And should we be holding them?
What I do know, is that like it or not, I cannot separate my life from my art. And I'm also learning that as chill, calm, patient, and mindful as I'd like to think I am, in me, in equal part, resides the sociologist / cultural-anthropologist / ethnographer / artist, who feels compelled to call out and make public the inequity & down right unfairness that I see right in front of my eyes, and work in every single day. In some of the most underserved schools in the SFUSD by day, and at Wisdom 2.0 events by night.
Like Soren, I love the idea & approach of shining light on what's working, and not devoting too much energy to what's not. We are, after all, Warriors of the Light; Instead of complaining, go be the change you want to see, right in the heart of what you want to change. This too, I think, is more effective. But sometimes, also - and I know this is the dance-theatere-spoken-word-artist in me - you just gotta call it. Out! Because otherwise the issue won't get the attention it deserves.
When to sit in acceptance, and when to act? This is a question that's core for me at the moment.
My conclusion: It's a beautiful, contradictory, messy world. And there are no easy answers.

CPAC – Conservative Political Action Conference - How is this structured?
Staying small, intimate, and fostering human connections.
Finding a sweet spot in terms of size.
Or not: There’s all this division out there. Can we help that?
Oriented around being of service to the community.
Playing an effective / productive part in the country / word’s psyche.
Movement building.
Bridge building.
Not demonizing the other.
How do we harness the momentum & motivation of the conference?
Reaching the University world.
Connecting people who are doing the same type of work, out in the world….
Conscious Capitalism.
Online University.
Platform.
How do we actually do this?
Business is what people look at, and it spreads down to culture (YES!)
My point: Let’s look at the income inequality that these companies are perpetuating.
If we forget about business, it just becomes a Yoga conference.
High level executives => Spreading mass consciousness.
Don’t loose the elite business aspect.
Mom & Pops ó Corporate CEO’s.
“Just because I don’t have the excitement or energy, doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be what it wasn’t to be… Someone else might have to take it forward.
What wants to make itself know?
Incredible gathering: People: Energy: Conference.
How do we sustain and foster connection between events?
Early Adopters.
Starting email chains with influencers..
In different parts of the company.
Staying away from politics… and simultaneously…
Doing anything that puts our values out there is inherently political.
Bring the tea party community and occupy community together..
Experiences of bringing people together, in community, creates empathy.
Expand | Connect
When you try to control something it typically breaks. When you give something space it typically blossoms.
Wisdom 2.0 Leaders -> that go out into the community and lead conferences (?)
Transgender in Tech.
How do we bring communities together?
Some of the groups need containers – and appropriate ones – we don’t want get together to become an opportunity to promote your services, or your book.
INCOME INEQUALITY (from my perspective, we NEED to discuss this!)
My perspective: A lot of the companies that are starting to embrace wisdom and mindfulness practices in the their corporate culture – perpetuate this. We need to look in the mirror.
Partnerships are the way to go! – You already have a built in base.
Harnessing the tech community.
Helping everybody rise.
Community Sharing.
Business | High Tech | Wisdom | Neuroscience.
Companies are financial based systems, and we are looking for implementing human based systems – there is an inherent contradiction there.
People in systems are treated as liabilities (YES!)
Corporate citizenship.
B-Corp: A different kind of bottom line…
Shine a light on the good, and don’t focus so much on the dark.
Supporting stuff that uplifts everybody :-)

Information bubbles.
We consume (and provide people with) content that confirms their existing biases.
Increasing economic inequality.
Economic inequality is bad for everyone.

Creation vs. Consumption
“We’ve revolutionized the way our economy works in our past..”
“You can say one wrong thing on the internet, and have 150,000 trolls attack you for a year and a half.”
Trauma, depression: You open the internet and experience _______ for two years, and it has an impact on you. (Yes! It was like the shift at my sites, but flipped around.... Every day I’d go home – and still do – feeling the weight of that; Slowly but surely, it starts to wear on you.)
Amazon has opened their first store where there are no humans.
You have a large group of people out there with the sentiment: “Who’s going to protect us from this changing world?”
There are jobs, and then there’s happiness.
There are no easy answers here.
The first thing you need to do to get out of prison, is know that you’re in prison.
There’s only so long that you can stretch something before it breaks.
The community in this room is having a conversation that deserves to go mainstream.
Can Technolgy Support Mindfulness? Exploring Apps, Wearables, and Mindful Living | Tristan Harris (Time Well Spent) | Alex Tew (Calm.com) | Irene Au (Khosla Ventures):
The attention economy.
Instead of competing for attention, how about we compete for what kind of positive contributions we’re making.
How do we raise awareness, and get our attention back?
A set of behavioral recommendations…
A smartphone is like a car; You can go to all of these amazing places, but they also isolate us, and pollute the environment.
“I’m pretty optimistic that technology will eventually solve the problems it creates.” – Alex Tew
Leveraging FB, and leveraging Twitter.
A playbook of behavioral change principles.
How technology hijacks your mind.
Snaphat’s the #1 way that teenagers communicate.
What is ethical persuasion? What is unethical persuasion?
The difference is that their goals in designing this are not the same as why kids are using it.
How do we illuminate these conversations?
A respect for autonomy.
There’s a huge elephant in the room in our industry.
A reasoning style – a way people use to justify….
Given tech’s scale & ubiquity…
Its' engineers are its'….
How do we align….
Everyone in the community has a responsibility for the flow of information.
Design Ethics.
Their choices organize this city (Apple, Google, and Facebook).
If you’re just trying to get your thing to work, you don’t’ have the luxury…
In companies, groups that are trying to reduce bullying on-line, are under-resourced.
Most books these days are too long.
We need to teach kids how to manage their attention at a really early age.
“Giving people the tools to be the masters of their own attention.”
Tip: Turn off notifications from anything that isn’t a person. (YES!)
Really taking a microscope to your own experience and asking yourself “Why did I do that?”

Looking at the historical intersection between race & law.
What does it mean to be a democratic, political community?
A look back: Making White-ness a prerequisite for becoming a naturalized citizen.
Creating a world that works for us -- do we really mean Everybody??
White people often feel really uncomfortable talking about this…
The work of making our institutions & societies as inclusive as possible.
Segregation & re-segregation is a real problem.
Are we open to for the conversations that have to do with how we’re packaged?
How does mindfulness support all of these issues?
There is a certain element of preaching to the choir, because a lot of the people who we want to join us at this conference, couldn’t afford to come. And they live right in this city! (YES!)
The hardest things to wake up to are the things we ignore.
Implicit Bias.
We only see through our own conditioning.
We tend to be very self-centric.
Implicit mental models.
We need to help each other wake up.
And get out of our comfort zones. (YES!).
The Body Politic: All of the cells of the body need a blood supply.
What mindfulness can do in its broadest sense, is help us recognize the interconnectedness of all of us.
As soon as we start to get into descriptors, pain and ignorance arises.
Social Justice is not some kind of second daughter phenomenon.” – JKZ
It is absolutely at the core of mindfulness.
Recoiling and looking away from the “other” is a form of violence.
My well being is intimately connected with yours.
How do we know that, and engage deeply with the suffering that’s in our midst?
“Whatever justice looks like for me, it has to include you..” - JKZ
“Being at the cutting edge / redefining what it means to study the law..”
We need to bring this to the heart of the social / planetary contract.
We are so “wounded” already – can we meet this suffering with love & kindness that includes us all?
“Whatever brought you here, trust that – it’s trustworthy” – JKZ

To move society forward, our strategies must be driven by our interconnectedness.
“victim thinking” & “victim blaming”.
We need more human, human-beings.
The issue of diversity & inclusivity.
“Who’s in and who’s out?”
Opening to diversity is not just a noble idea, it opens to wisdom & compassion..
The diamond left unpolished.
This journey of awakening is not supposed to be comfortable – please get that (!!)

Walking the highest path, even when behavioral norms are at the lowest.
Is standing with / standing by those voices that have less volume than others.
Holding to all these principles, even when there is an infinite number of distractions.
What is our moment to moment practice?
Integrity is not a personal practice, but a collective one.
Yay! Excited to be here :)
What a great first day!

Wisdom 2.0: Conscious Entrepreneurship: Building A Business From The Inside Out | LinkedIn (Jan. 2017)
Disclaimer: As with all of my published notes, these are in no way comprehensive. Nor are they a literal summation of what was said. They are simply my notes, my interpreted, perspective-ed jottings that occasionally combine my own records & thoughts with those of the speakers. There might be some typos.
What is the art of receiving an idea?
And how do we nurture it?
It usually involves relationship and a team.
If this works, why aren’t ______________ receiving it?
The tech world is maturing and growing up (yes!).
How do we identify individuals and companies that have a potential for growth?
Who else would I want to buy products from?? Of course I want to buy products from someone who will listen to me.
“It’s not enough to say ‘Hey, we want to save the world, but we’re going to be ___holes as we do it.’” (agreed).
Each one of us has the adequate inner resources to take on whatever life gives us.
How do we go about processes where we’re just following an instinct?
Eckhart Tolle says..
Primary purpose = To be fully present in this moment.
Secondary Purpose = What is it that life is trying to move through you at this moment?
Whenever (presence (?) can’t make sense of my notes, here) is absent, you start to loose flow.
A community exploration.
What is this art of conscious entrepreneurship?
“Imagine that I’m about to give you a gift. How would you sit?”
Upright, dignified, and comfortable.
Instead of breathe, let yourself be breathed (:-)
Gus Tai | Trinity Ventures | Soren Gordhamer
I try to avoid identities and descriptions.
I am a tourist. I like to focus on the moment, and see how I can be helpful.
We’re all more similar than we are different.
A venture capitalist.
Well intuition-ed human beings, who have clarity of purpose.
“My human operating system.”
Relating to people.
It’s helpful to have a ritual.
A questioner & an existentialist – without getting trapped in nihilism.
An opportunity to be kinder to myself.
A helpful construct / constraint to have…
Your critical voice tortures yourself.
How do we learn to quiet it?
In addition to a market element, what makes a product or companies work?
A CLARITY OF INTENTION, OF HOW THEY WANT TO SERVE, WHICH TRANSCENDS WHO THEY ARE (nice!).
Businesses succeed because they become living entities.
Businesses deserve to survive because they offer, or delight, in a way that’s profitable, and then generate revenue that one can re-invest.
What are some common mistakes that entrepreneurs start off making?
As human beings we move through 3 states of being:
Operating from a place of presence (ideal), operating from a place of fear/ danger / manic-ness, or becoming narcissistic and egotistical (when things start going well, and you think success is entirely attributable to you).
We operate best in middle ground.
Great question from the audience: “What do you think is true, that many people might disagree with?”
We often confuse activity with momentum / velocity.
“I’m too busy” – You’re deluded!
This sense that imbalance or discomfort requires activity….
Instead, just sit with it.
Can I sit with discomfort?
Personal Reflection; I’ve learned a lot about this concept over the past two years at my sites, since the shift; Instead of reacting, what if you just field & sit with whatever comes your way, and then respond, instead (?). In my experience, not only does it make for a more interesting, well, experience, I guess… but I’ve also noticed that usually, when it come to strange or puzzling situations, the longer you can “hold your seat”, and become comfortable with being uncomfortable, the more that’s revealed.
Thoughts on the role of consciousness in the boardroom, with investors, and on a team.
When you’re kind to yourself & can forgive yourself, and just allow yourself to be a human being…
Setting up your team & board with cultural norms, upfront.
Being kindly. Direct. :)
Konda Mason | Impact Hub Oakland | Soren Gordhamer
Seeing a lot of initiatives being started.
What are some of the insights you’ve learned from launching Impact Hub Oakland?
A co-working community.
“I received it. It was like a real download.”
The goal was to gather community around the vision (rather than $) with the Kickstarter Campaign.
What makes you come alive?
Because the world needs people who have come alive.
Authentic & Internal.
Most people didn’t know what they were giving their money to, but loved the feeling (!).
We did everything wrong. We had 7 founders!
Such a diverse group, and everybody brought their networks.
Also a meditation teacher and a retreat leader.
I’ve always been an entrepreneur – so I can call my own shots (:-) ( I hear you!)
There are a lot of entrepreneurs here today, and social change makers.
The most important thing is to do what you know to do.
#1 Value is authenticity: To know who you are and listen to that voice.
LOVE THIS! Even when the world seems to be discouraging you, and advising you otherwise, it’s like “No, NO! I’m putting my foot on the gas, this way.” (YESSSS!)
And after, people came up to us and said “I was wrong, I don’t know how you did it..”
If you’re goals aren’t genuine (no bueno).
If the goal is to be successful, you probably won’t succeed.
Be yourself, and keep it moving forward.
Very proud of collaborations that have come up and out of the community.
The ending is in the beginning; How you start is most likely how you’ll end.
We’re not in our 20’s or 30’s anymore; we’re able to walk in our own footsteps.
“Consciousness, Diversity, and Inclusion is the world… and if it’s not that, I don’t want to be part of it.”
We were in the right place, at the right time, with the right container, and the right message.
*When the flower blooms, the bees come uninvited.
We bring love into the space.
And that’s so important to bring into your business.
Joe Greenstein | Inner Space | Soren Gordhamer
Day job as an activist J
What is the bond that connects all of us?
“I’m a recovering entrepreneur.”
“I’ve been doing the Silicon Valley start up thing for about 18 years now.”
Silicon Valley – it’s a tremendous amount of activity, but are we making any progress toward human beings being more loving & joyful?
Intentional Culture.
Creating the container that you wish you’d had.
We’re two years in, and still totally trying to figure out our sustainability model.
There are a lot of myths that we inherit, that come into our activity.
Not having to know all the answers.
What is our relationship to the unknown?
A relational-present-moment-joy… (:-)
A community of relationality.
We can’t see around corners, and opportunities have to emerge.
“How does balance between fire / intensity / passion, and not being ego-driven happen??”
Being & Doing.
Can I really be peaceful and happy, and still do stuff in the world at the same time?
I’ve never seen it be the case that under the fear isn’t something else…
We tend to think we need certainty to act, and that’s not the case.
Are you courageous enough to not know the answer, take your best guess, and then spend your night and day working towards it?
Joseph Campbell – there’s something about the integrity of a life…
Welcome to being human (!).
Instead of fighting ego, what if you fully embraced the ego side of yourself, and bring it into the conversation?
*Important Question: Are we really opening the door to have more provocative conversations about historical forces, and social structures, that shape our wants & desires?
How do we learn, without fixing, or forcing, or helping?
One problem: Conversations about race and gender etc. operate in one realm, and consciousness, conscious leadership, entrepreneurship, in another – how can we build a bridge?
JKZ is going to do a special session on this at Wisdom this year – When do we speak up? And when do we just sit, and contemplate?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks, once again, for an informative, thought-provoking, feeling-provoking event; So looking forward to this year’s conference. Woot Woot! :)

Wisdom 2.0 - Conscious Entrepreneurship - Soren Gordhamer & Gus Tai | LinkedIn (Jan. 2017)
I love Soren’s point about the importance of clear and open lines of communication, especially within hierarchical power structures; How do we relate to those who are “above” or “below” us in explicit and implicit hierarchies?
The more time I spend in institutions, the more interested I’m becoming in organizational culture, and the role of compassion & ethics in the work place.
