Johnny Lawrence's first cousin from his much younger aunt, Lizzie, Gemma is not at all interested in karate - her passion is metalwork. She's currently halfway through a blacksmithing course and excelling at it, as she’s wanted to be a blacksmith since she was sixteen and she's also very much a troll - she’s fully aware of her resemblance to her older cousin and though oftentimes the assumption that she's his daughter is purely coincidental, other times she's gleefully encouraged it because she finds it hilarious.

Of course, Johnny does sometimes worry about the possibility of other children popping up - his aunt and little cousin coming into his life when they did unknowingly averted a great deal of trouble because it meant he had support when his mother died and Robby grew up a Lawrence, but he did have a pretty wild eighties and nineties, so when Miguel comes to the office one day and informs him that his daughter’s outside, he nearly has a heart attack before coming out to find her howling with laughter - this time all she did was walk in the door. But she loves all her family deeply and when not working on her course she's often hanging out with Robby because she's fond of the kid.

(Though she may or may not have a bet with him that most of their newfound frenemies will mistake her for Johnny's kid.)

I'm trying out non-linear story-telling for my Moonfall fic - this is from the first section set in the last hours before said Moonfall, and I'm proud of it because I think it sets the scene well even though at this point we don't really know the details or who these characters are, just that they clearly know how to work well together to help people.

Fancast Alert/Formal OC Introduction - Robin Wright as Elizabeth 'Lizzie' McKinney (neé Lawrence)

The younger (by thirteen years) sister of Laura Lawrence, Lizzie was just five years old when a pregnant Laura was kicked out of the family home, but still felt her absence keenly and always planned to go and find her one day. But this was easier said than done, especially as she was still living with their parents until she was twenty, and by the time she moved out the trail had gone cold. Nonetheless, she never gave up, and in 2000 finally tracked her sister down to the San Fernando Valley...only to be devastated to find out about the cancer diagnosis. But it was still a very touching reunion and she was delighted to not only finally meet her nephew but to introduce her young daughter to her family, and made the most of the remaining time together.

After Laura's passing, Lizzie and her husband decided to stay in the Valley, wanting to support her nephew, and in fact was instrumental in making sure he was actually present at his son's birth - something which, unbeknownst to anyone, averts a lot of drama down the line - and in 2017 continues to work as a legal secretary, proud of Gemma for pushing past her doubts and taking a somewhat unconventional path in life by deciding to become a blacksmith, and although she's a little apprehensive at Johnny reopening Cobra Kai again, she recognises that it's his attempt to reclaim the legacy from Kreese, and it seems to be his calling.

Though she still plans to keep an eye on the situation. Just in case.

At least that's what everyone believes and Amanda would like to keep it that way, thank you very much, especially from the people she cares about, and she'll never be called upon to use her powers anyway - not that Amanda was interested in doing so. She has Uncle Ben and Aunt May and her favourite cousin Peter and her best friend Harry and that's all that matters. Except then Uncle Ben is killed, and Peter starts keeping secrets, and Harry's absolute shit of a father appears on the scene - turns out there are people she can loathe more than Robert Kelly, who knew - and this all before a goddamned supervillain shows up in New York...

From my Gemma Laura McKinney AU - some family background for the Lawrences with Johnny reflecting on how he met his Aunt Lizzie and cousin Gemma for the first time.

Lizzie, it turned out, had been looking for Mom for years, but with the name change it had been difficult, and then she’d gotten married and had a kid, which had put things on hold, but she’d been determined to find her older sister, and Johnny had gotten confirmation  that Mom had been kicked out of the family home and was never spoken about again, which had been difficult for Lizzie, and had eventually caused another rift when Lizzie had called her parents out on his and left in her early twenties. It had been a very emotional reunion – almost too much so for Johnny, but he hadn’t wanted to disappoint Mom, and it turned out he got on well with his aunt, and��well, little Gemma had been adorable, though he never said so at the time – and it turned out Mom had missed her little sister something terrible, and seeing her face light up like it had… Johnny hadn’t seen that happen in so long, he’d almost forgotten what it looked like.

This is from Chapter 3 of when a friendship is found (across the seas) - the morning after 1x04, and Jaskier and Áine are having breakfast together and Eist, Áine's (second) cousin has shown up. And what is family for but for roasting each other?

“I will admit to adding some embellishment to my stories, but never tall tales.” Jaskier said mock-haughtily, and Áine snickered. “We were discussing what happened last night.” She told Eist. “As is everyone else in the castle, but at least it had a happy outcome.” “I swear my ears are still ringing.” “I guess the effect’s worse when there’s nothing between them.” “You fucking pox-ridden bastard!” She exclaimed, before throwing a piece of cheese at his head, which he caught easily, and Jaskier couldn’t help but laugh at the sight. “I’m not the one in love with or married to the most terrifying woman on the Continent!”

She is also owed a favour by Lucifer after she saved the city of Los Angeles from a rogue Prince of Hell - doing so by killing him in combat.

A girl who quickly befriends Johnny Lawrence in 1981, and soon after befriends the rest of the Cobras, not caring about being the only girl in the group. She eventually tries to join Cobra Kai but is rejected outright by Kreese, and Johnny and the Cobras find this unfair as they’ve seen her fight before and know she can fight, and Johnny decides that he’ll teach her karate. But being one degree seperate from Kreese - and fiercely independant in any case - means she has an outsider’s point of view, and becomes increasingly horrified at the path her friends are taking. 1984 is the lowest point in their friendship, something Nicky takes very hard, but they eventually manage to work things through, and she remains friends with Johnny and the others ever since.

In the Cobra Kai era she has a teenage son, James, and lives next to Johnny, acting as an aunt figure to Robby. When Johnny suddenly decides to re-open Cobra Kai in an attempt to reclaim the legacy from Kreese, he asks Nicky to be his co-sensei. She is shocked by the offer, given that she never competed in any karate tournament, but eventually accepts.

Things changed for him when he manifested his speed and healing powers, and his parents fled with him to Canada, where he eventually became the second Cobalt Blue. But he ends up travelling back to 2019 after finding out that his childhood friend has been visiting Eobard Thawne, because he knows that can’t mean anything good - little does he know this is just the start of his adventures in time travel.

She was one of the few survivors of Shadow out of sheer damn luck and has been living on another planet for the past eleven years, making friends and picking up some not entirely legal skills along the way,  and when she runs into Mal it’s a shock for nearly everyone involved - for most of the crew, because aside from Zoe and River no one knew he even had a daughter, and for Mal especially because as far as he knew? She’d been killed in the bombardment of Shadow.

A street rat who takes the first opportunity she can to get the hell off her shithole of a planet and stows aboard the Millenium Falcon, and manages to stay hidden for two days before Chewbacca finds her. She tries to give the little money she saved to Han if he’ll just drop her on the nearest planet, but he refuses to take money from a kid and remembers being a street rat well enough. The Star Wars universe being somewhat dire at this stage, she ends up staying with him because hey, there are worse places, and she kind of becomes his sidekick - people mistake them for siblings all the time but the jokes on them because they actually do end up considering each other siblings (though it’s over a decade before either of them admits to this, even after Meri ‘borrows’ his surname)

The eldest daughter of Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade, Nellith is only ten years old when her cousin turns to the dark side and kills half the students in the temple - Nellith is only just saved by her father along with a handful of other students, but believes her mother and younger sister Reyana are dead, and she’s soon sent into hiding with her own force signature dampened. It seems she will never be a Jedi, now that there’s no one able to teach her. But she isn’t alone, and no one’s more surprised than her when her grandfather’s force ghost appears, offering to teach her what he can - and to look out for her in ways non-force users can’t.

As she grows up she ends up helping the resistance movement and helping to rescue Jedi children from the First Order, operating under an alias.

A telephone operator during the war, Sarah was recruited by the SSR to work in their New York office - and she likes the job, but at the same time is frustrated at the lack of opportunities. She’s a friend of Peggy and Daniel’s, and starts a tentative friendship with Jack not long after S1, after finding out that he actually does know her name and what she did during the war. Surprisingly they get along - partly because she soon works out that a lot of what he’s putting up is a front - and the friendship becomes more solid over the next several months, though it’s a further several months before either admit to being in love. She ends up being one of the first agents of the newly created SHIELD and marries Jack in 1950, going on to have three children with him, and becoming something of a legend within SHIELD as the decades go on.

Granddaughter of Jack and Sarah and a SHIELD agent since she was 18-years-old, her life is turned upside down during the events of Winter Solider - of the five person team she was part of, two were SHIELD, two were HYDRA, and in the ensuring battle Alex was the only survivor, left to grapple with the fact that the organisation she’d been part of for years was a lie, that everything her grandparents and extended family fought for was for nothing, and that she now has to get from Croatia to America (by herself) without being caught or killed by the remains of HYDRA...and in the hope that her country won’t immediately assume she’s a traitor. She does manage to make it, but refuses to ever work in espionage again.

Clint doesn’t know of her existence - at the time his marriage to Bobbi was already on the rocks and they were arguing a lot and just could not have a civil conversation, and when Clint came back from an undercover mission months later it had been too long, and Bobbi, though she felt awful, figured that maybe he was better he didn’t know and didn’t have to deal with unwanted responsibilities. She resolved to raise Hannah herself - and then she was nearly killed on a mission and realised she couldn’t give her baby the life she deserved, and gave her up for adoption. Hannah bounced around the system for a little while before ending up with the Edwards, but she’s always been curious about her birth parents, and finally gets the chance to find out more about them, especially the father who never knew she existed.

She doesn’t often use her powers for these missions unless she has to - instead she uses martial arts, as she believes that it’s important to train up just in case she ever happens to lose her mutant abilities. Six months after the events of Winter Soldier, she ends up helping Bucky Barnes, though is reluctant to get too involved as she doesn’t want to put her fellow mutants in danger from the various factions that will inevitably come after him.

After gaining the powers of night vision and camoflage during Terregenesis, Emma becomes one of the first Nuhumans to be taken up to Attilan, where she befriends Maximus almost immediately, also finding favour among the higher-ups for her powers. But she soon suspects that Attilan is not the paradise for Inhumans it claims to be, and after discovering the truth about how low-powered and non-powered Inhumans are treated - even those who’ve come from Earth - she becomes one of Maximus’s strongest allies in his plan to overhaul the entire system...even if it means overthrowing the Royal Family themselves.

At thirteen years old Alex’s life changed forever when, after months of bullying, her mutant powers awakened and she accidently destroyed half her school with telekinesis - no one was seriously hurt, but Alex was still forced to go on the run, taking only basic necessities before proceeding to trek across Canada while trying to avoid the authorities. After four months Alex was really starting to struggle and feeling guilty about having turned to thieving to survive - and it’s at this point she meets Logan who, though he’s somewhat gruff and grumpy and reluctant, isn’t going to let her starve on the streets and agrees to let her travel with him, at least for a little while - she’s a kid and a fellow mutant, after all. Alex soon comes to see him as a father figure, though she’s resolved to never tell him that because it’s not like he sees her as a daughter and she doesn’t to make things weird.

There’s still a dramatic change when Rogue joins them, though - as the truck is soon attacked, though they’re saved by the X-Men, and Alex is finally brought into the fold, finally brought to somewhere she can actually be safe to practice her powers. She soon befriends both Rosa Gabriel and John Allerdyce, and everything seems good.

Except there’s always trouble on the horizon...

The younger twin sister of Warren Worthington III, she and her brother were as thick as thieves and were always close, could always rely on each other, but everything changed when Warren suddenly sprouted wings when they were ten. Although Rosa never had a problem with them, their father did, and made it clear that being a mutant was something to be ashamed of, a problem to be solved, to be cured, and soon enough Warren came to think the very same thing. This broke Rosa’s heart and she grew to resent both her parents for putting Warren through this instead of giving him support.

Three years later, Rosa ended up with wings of her own, her mutation manifesting while she was staying at her aunt’s. After getting over the shock her first thought was to tell Warren, but she knew she couldn’t; while she might be able to persuade him to keep quiet for a little while, she knew he would soon come to the conclusion that it was for her own good to tell their parents, that she'd want to be cured no matter, and Rosa couldn’t let that happen. She knew mutants were feared and persecuted, but she wasn’t going to keep a part of herself hidden or let herself be ‘solved’ because of other people, and so she made the momentous decision to run away.

And she did so successfully, being found by the X-Men two days later, and since then has thrived at Xavier’s and become something of an older sister figure to the younger mutants (not that they’d ever admit that). And although she misses Warren something fierce, she knows that this was the right thing to do.

She is best friends with Doyle and has never feared his demon half, only wishing she could do more to help him accept himself. In 1998 (when she’s 23) she temporarily moves to Sunnydale to help out another friend as well as the non-evil beings living there, and ends up befriending Angel, recently returned from Hell, a move that alienates her from Xander and Giles, is accepted by Willow, Oz, and Buffy, and confuses Angel once he finds out she knows all about him and his past. Despite this, she ends up helping throughout S3, and leaves Sunnydale for LA at the end, though keeps in contact with her Sunnydale friends.

Malcolm and Rebecca’s adopted daughter on Earth-2, seven years older than Tommy, and known for being no-nonsense and willing to fight for what she has, a trait she learned during her early childhood in the Glades. Though it took her a while to open up, she eventually came to think of Malcolm and Rebecca as her parents, and later Tommy as the younger brother she always wanted. She became dedicated to improving the Glades and followed her mother into philanthropy, but was devastated when her Rebecca died due to illness. With her relationship with her father strained after finding out about his one-time liason with Moira (though she still loves Thea very much) she ended up spending more time with Oliver, Tommy and Laurel, and agrees to accompany Oliver and Robert on their Queen’s Gambit trip. She ends up being one of the only two survivors of the resulting shipwreck, and returns five years later as the Midnight Archer, more determined than ever to root out corruption in the city.

Any ambition of being an adventurer died there and then, and instead decides that she’ll become an archaeologist, taking a strong stance against fortune hunters as that career led to her father’s death. She grew up with her mother, aunt and cousin, and knows she has a paternal uncle out there, but as he’s never showed up has figured he isn’t interested in knowing her - because the alternative is that her dad never told him about her existence, and that would be devastating.

She gets off to a rocky start with Bodie and Doyle after they initially assume that she’s one of the new secretaries, but things soon even out and when they have to work together she’s happy to do so.

She meets Fraser not long after his reassignment to her city, and though she’s initially amused at this walking stereotype she soon realises he’s a genuinely kind man and she soon gets to know him (and his wolfdog) - taken aback when he wants to be her friend, given this happens rarely, but accepts this nonetheless.

Born in Washington, DC, she did not have the best childhood -  once her brother was born and displayed musical prowess as an infant, she was essentially ignored by her parents and the majority of her family. The only adults who actually looked out for her were her Uncle Jethro, a friend of her  uncle’s from the Navy, and his wife, Aunt Shannon, and she considered them - and Kelly - her real family alongside her best friends Jessica and Steven. But tragedy struck - first in 1991 with Shannon and Kelly’s deaths, and then in 1995 when Steven was killed in a bombing. By this point she’d already left home, and after recieving no sympathy from her parents she cut off contact completely, going on a global gap year with Jessica and changing her name. She returned, went to college, and decided to join the Coast Guard as a helicopter rescue swimmer. After nine years she wanted a change and applied to become an NCIS agent - and is assigned to Gibbs’ team, bringing her face to face with the honourary uncle she hasn’t spoken to in nineteen years...

The elder sister of Tytos Blackwood, Melissa was always headstrong and contrary, and counted both Lyanna Stark and Jaime Lannister among her closest friends throughout her childhood and teen years, meeting the former on a trip to Winterfell and the latter during the Tourney at Lannisport. She ended up accompanying Lyanna when she went off with Rhaegar, becoming one of her companions in the Tower of Joy - and ultimately helping to deliver Jon, though is guilt-ridden over the fact she was unable to save Lyanna. Swearing an oath to Ned Stark to never reveal the truth - and unable to stomach being in Westeros after everything that's happened, especially after finding out what happened to the Targaryen children, she fled to Dorne with the other women from the Tower, with most of the continent (including Jaime and her family) believing she's dead.

Deeply affected by Lyanna's death, Melissa eventually decided to become a midwife and do her best to make sure that no woman died in childbirth like her friend - as she firmly blames Rhaegar for not making sure she had the proper care. She also ends up with five children whom she loves dearly, and doesn’t ever think she’ll return to her homeland - until Oberyn Martell makes plans to go to Westeros, and, fearing that the only friend she has remaining from her old life will be one of his targets, goes with him to do damage control...

A former soldier in the British Army and current British Red Cross worker, Lexa’s life is seemingly cut short when she’s caught in gang crossfire while on holiday in Spain. The only person who comes to her aid amidst the panic is a Frenchman named Sebastien, who can only hold her as she dies - neither expecting her to heal and wake up, because it turns out that she’s an Immortal too. After taking a couple of days to adjust, Sebastien - who prefers to be known as Booker - offers to give her the contact for Copley and the other Immortals, explaining how he betrayed them out of a desire to become mortal, how he got in too deep and how he’s now in exile. She’d be better of with them, he reckons.

But Lexa’s not one to up and leave people - especially not people who clearly really need someone - and though she can’t offer him professional help she can stay and be his friend. He clearly regrets his actions, and he stayed by her side when he didn’t have to after her apparent death, and is, in the end, just a very lonely man. Booker’s stunned when she stays, shocked at the fact she wants to be his friend even after hearing that, and expects the other shoe to drop at any moment - meanwhile, Lexa’s determined to prove to him that’s not going to happen.

When she’s contracted to not only run test flights but the maiden flight of their latest craft, Starfinder, she assumes it will be routine.

Except after an hour in orbit, two of the engines explode and the lives of her, her co-pilot, the crew and the thirty-odd passengers on board are in grave danger. Calling International Rescue, she gets the shock of her life when she recognises John’s voice replying to her, followed by the rest of his brothers as IR remains in contact during the rescue. She remains professional, but she has a lot of questions once Starfinder is saved...

A mechanical engineer who knows the Tracy brothers through her friendship with Sheridan - in particular is very good friends with Virgil - and who has worked with Mercury Aerospace a number of times. Although she didn’t personally work on the Starfinder she knows plenty of people who did, and is shocked when the engines explode and International Rescue has to be called in. Not only that, there’s the possibility of sabotage, and Sheridan is very clearly keeping something from her, and all in all it is a very stressful situation, and she doesn’t know what she can do about it.

Devon is an apparently ordinary woman, aside from the burn scars on her arms and her friendship (and co-habitation) with disgraced astronaut Brian Harper - but there’s a lot more to her than meets the eye, mainly the fact that she has a whole catalogue of scars across her body, and a gap in her memory from the end of January 2005 to the beginning of October 2008...memory loss with no apparent explanation. It was because of this she moved to America in the first place, and after Brian is scapegoated she makes the choice to finally open up about this part of her life, as they’ve both gone through something out of the ordinary. Their friendship was strengthened as a result and they’ve remained close ever since y et even years later Devon still can’t help but wonder just what she’s missing even as she’s resigned to never getting her memories back - something tells her that whatever it was, it was far from the average experience. 

In December 2021, weird events start happening across the globe, and Devon starts getting flashes of things that seem impossible. The resulting headaches are painful and more than a little frightening to both her and Brian...yet as the months go on it’s clear that these aren’t just random snippets, but, somehow, her memories returning to her.

And then comes the shocking news that the moon has moved out of orbit - and is heading on a collision course with Earth...

Then Mal offered to marry her and take on the blame, which she accepted, and they spent seven happy years co-parenting before Mal left for war. She has always hated the Alliance, and this was solidified after she and her daughter ended up being one of only a handful of survivors from Shadow after the Alliance firebombed it - and though she never said so to her daughter she was convinced Mal was dead as well, killed in combat, and is relieved when it turns out he’s alive.

There are very few Firebirds left on the Continent, as they were often hunted for their blessings and then blamed for any misfortunes, which is why she made the choice to have a human form several decades before, and she rarely taps into her full power. A Canadian with a degree in history who lectures at universities, Lia dated Sam Drake for several months in 1992 and was very much in love with him, but also realised that he wasn’t one to stay around - figuring that he wouldn’t want to be tied down with a kid, so she made the decision to part amiably from him in September of that year, despite being three months pregnant. She was, however, determined to keep the child - she got kicked out by her parents as a result, but her sister Sonya helped her out and she moved in with her, her brother-in-law Nicky, and her niece Sophia. She was a devoted mother, and always planned to tell Joanna more about her father at some point, but that day came sooner than expected when she fell gravely ill in 1996 and she asked Sonya to track down Sam, not wanting Joanna to be without a parent. She recovered and became friends with Sam again, but was devastated to find out he was killed on a job, as she still loved him. Since then, she has focused on her family and tried her best to make sure Joanna gets a legitimate job, not wanting her to go down the same path as her father.

“Cos Robby told me you were, in his words, ‘being even more of an idiot than usual cos you’d run into your old rival’ and that you’d reopened the snake dojo.”

“That was months ago.” He said, and Gemma cracked up again.

“I’m—I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist! No, I’ve just got a break from things and I figured I’d come down and see you lot.”

“And give me a heart attack in the process.” He grumbled.

“Please, if you can eat junk food for thirty years and still manage to do karate, I think you’re doing just fine.”

Nearly everyone thought Henry a murderer and his son naïve for believing in him, someone to be pitied for his hopeless quest to find the weird and the impossible in the world – and yet one look at Malcolm, at the expression on his face, showed that he was sincere, that he really did believe Henry was innocent and that the real murderer, whoever or…whatever he might be was still out there.

This is from my Henry & Malcolm fic for Cobalt Blue and The Flash - this part takes place five years before the main events of the series, early in Malcolm and Barry's friendship (but post-burnout) and Malcolm is covering for Barry on a prison visit. And has just dropped the bomb that he thinks Henry's innocent which, as you can imagine, has stunned him given he barely knows the kid.

This is from my Gemma Laura McKinney AU - where Johnny has more relatives and has a far better relationship with his son as a result. Gemma isJohnny's first (and much younger) cousin who takes great delight in trolling him - and Robby as well, though they're just as likely to team up against him.

But her own parents didn’t care, and some small part of her hadn’t been surprised when they sent her to one of her aunts when she was six and for the next couple years Nicky had just been shunted around to various family members, aunts and uncles and cousins who either mainly focused on their own families or just weren’t interested in raising a kid at all.

She didn’t ever know what she’d done wrong, why no one seemed to like her, but it hurt – even finally settling at Aunt Charlotte’s hadn’t helped with that, because even she didn’t seem entirely sure about her, though to date she’d never called Nicky a burden like some of the others had, hadn’t told her that her parents were much better off without her.

…Nicky couldn’t help but feel that was a low bar, all things considered.

This is for the Nicky Connors, Cobra Adjacent series and full background - this initially started off as a flufftober fic for last year for the prompt 'Accidents Don't Just Happen Accidently' but I couldn't really find the inspiration to make it for that event. I kept it, though, because I do wanted to expand on it.

It's going to be set on July 10th 1982, Nicky's fifteenth birthday, except birthdays have never really been something to be celebrated because of the aforementioned family problems, so she's been moping the last few days - Johnny, who picked up on it (though not why because she hasn't told any of the Cobras it IS her birthday) comes around and they have another beach hangout and a talk which ends up more emotional and revealing than either of them planned...

3. Describe your wip badly

A teacher's much younger first cousin shows up, trolls everyone, and manages to fool several different people into thinking she's actually his daughter without saying anything because of the strong resemblance between them - teacher is caught between amusement and annoyance when she also doesn't deny it.

10. Describe the tropes present in this wip

Aside from the fact that this is a 'Johnny is more put together than canon' AU, the Uncle-Niece relationship between Johnny and Gemma (the thirty year age difference means they don't really interact as cousins because both would find that too weird), and the Brother-Sister dynamic between her and Robby are the two main ones. And of course fluff and family in general, plus humour f(from the situation)- though there's gonna be some angst when Johnny reflects on the past early on, because for a long time he didn't think he had any other family out there, and then it turns out he has an aunt and a cousin.

This is from my Gemma Laura McKinney AU - going (very) slowly but getting there. In this fic Johnny is actually a good teacher (and father) but Daniel's still dealing with KK3 trauma so on that front, not much has changed on his end of things.
