“The trees are leafless and the flowers have died, taking all colour with them. The days grow short, the nights cold, the skies a gloomy grey- but then, one dark winter’s day, the first snowflakes flicker down, and they fall and fall until the world is transformed, gleaming, silent, magical.”
—Susan Cooper in the Preface for “Winter: a Folio Anthology” edited by Sue Bradbury

Happy December lilli! Do you have any book or other recs to help a guy giftshop?
Happy December, anon! 🧡 I'm sorry this took me so long to get back to! Admittedly, this year I'm not very well-prepared for the festive season myself. There are a few illustrated books that I've longingly stared at in bookshops throughout the year - maybe they'd work for someone in your life?
The Lost Spells by Robert MacFarlane and Jackie Morris, sort of a mix between poetry anthology and spellbook, which matches moody and strange and enthralling poems with the animals and plants they evoke. The illustrations in this are breathtaking.
The 2021 edition of Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien, a collection of jirt's illustrations.
A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson, specifically the Folio Society Edition with illustrations by James Weston Lewis. This is a book about the Appalachian Trail, but honestly if hiking's not your thing this is still worth holding in your hands just to stare at.
The Fox and the Star (hardcover) by Coralie Bickford-Smith is one of those books that are marketed as picture books for adults, but in essence it's a well thought-out and touching picture book I could see working for most ages.
I must have recommended it before but What We See in the Stars by Kelsey Oseid is one of my favourite illustrated books. It's a collection of constellation stories from myth and history that's just beautifully designed.
Some allrounder gift ideas that I cheat with a little every year because they're easy to customize and match to individual people:
Candles. This never fails. Elaborate handmade bees' wax candles for people who enjoy pretty things, subtle scented candles for my brother who's too shy to buy them for himself, prayer candles with famous writers on them for me specifically, Snoopy candles for my mum. I think there's a candle out there for most types of people.
Casual, functional merch - warm winter Starfleet Academy scarf, T-shirts with subtle prints, Tree of Gondor Christmas ornaments; nerds are easy to buy gifts for.
Ceramics! Gifting someone a mug has sort of gotten this connotation of being unimaginative or impersonal, which is really only true if it's not, like, a really good mug. Ceramics are art with a practical purpose. If you have some idea of someone's taste, looking up ceramic artists on etsy is always worth a shot.
Stationery - admittedly not a lot of people hand-write things these days, but there's a good chance you know at least one person who'd enjoy a nice sticker sheet, a letter set, a personalized Ex Libris stamp or some beautiful note cards or to-do lists. Individual artist's shops are a good place to look for unique designs.

Binding time!
Tumblr media
Thank you so much to all the writers who participated and submitted fanfic for the first TWW Winter Anthology! It was so much fun to typeset this for you all, and if you missed out on submitting this time, I hope we can do it again in the future.
Below I will share a link to the googledrive where all the files are stored. The formatting should prevent anyone from uploading these to a binding website, but just as a final reminder, it is illegal to profit off fanfic in any way. Please do not use these files to sell commissions or commission others. These are for personal use only, whether binding copies for yourself or as gifts to friends/giveaways.
Now onto the binding! Based on the survey, I’ve created two versions of the document. One for US Letter paper and one for A4, both in folio style, which means you will be folding your paper in half to create booklets.
Instructions: The anthology is posted in two ways. One as the whole file, which you can go ahead and print all at once if you want. These are the files with “aggregate book” in the title for both sizes. It is also separated into separate PDFs for each signature if you would prefer to print them one at a time or if issues arise and you need to more easily reprint any sections. Regardless of how you print, both versions are done in 6 page signatures (24 pages of the book). This means every 6 pieces of paper get folded together. If you are confused, send me a message, I’ll gladly further explain.
To print, in theory, these should all print as landscape and flip on short edge, if you have an automatic duplex printer. If not, you’ll have to do the flipping yourself based on the kind of printer you have. However, not all printers work the same, so I would recommend testing a few pages before you print the full document to make sure your print is being flipped the right direction.
In total, this should use 36 pieces of paper in both sizes. It’s a smaller book but still manageable.
I’ll be making a separate post later this week with resources for those looking for instructions on binding, as well as posting videos on my binding tiktok CreakySpineBindery in case anyone wants to bind along. You can bind these in any style you’d like, but I’ll be doing mine as a Square Back Bradel Bind, which I think is one of the easier methods for beginners.
And without further ado, the files: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1eXs334vc71Aqo_tPFN3-jT0wIjFldE25?usp=sharing

Yes. We’re headed out this week to the MidWinter Convention in Milwaukee!
It’s going to be cold.
It’s also going to be a great chance for fun, edumacation, and making deals and brainstorming projects. See the notes in the BLURBS! section, below.
I’m planning on bringing a folio of character art from both Pugmire and the new signature characters from Monarchies of Mau, so hit me up while we’re there and I’ll give ya a sneak peek.
Beast: Conquering Heroes art by Avery Butterworth
This week, Rose and Matt continue to grow into their full time positions with serious work on our infrastructure, and conversations with our Devs. Many Google docs and Excel spreadsheets were started and consulted.
They will both be at MidWinter, and my plan is to have a mini-summit where we look at both current projects and our possible releases for the next three years. I doubt we’ll get into new gamelines, but we’ll be devoting serious thought to the White Wolf lines, and Scion 2e and the Trinity Continuum and how all these lines need to fit together.
So, most of our conversations today were some discussion followed by “we’ll go over this when we’re sitting down at MidWinter“.
Lavinia from Scarred Lands The Wise & The Wicked by Bryan Syme
Meanwhile, while I’m running amok in Milwaukee, it is the beginning of the year tax time for Lovely LisaT, our Office Manager, as she prepares all the documents our accountant needs to tell us if we are still OK as a business.
I really feel bad about heading to a con during this time of the year.
No, really.
    BLURBS!
KICKSTARTER!
We’re exploring card game Kickstarters, packaging, and components, for Prince’s Gambit. Justin, Eddy, a crack team of players, and our talented videographers have finished shooting the KS videos in Atlanta and are assembling edits even as you read this. Things look good, and we are all for starting the KS in late January so long as the process of pulling the KS together cooperates. If so, then Monarchies of Mau KS would be next, after Gambit.

Promethean: the Created 2nd Edition comes to life in both PDF and PoD physical book versions NOW on DTRPG! http://ift.tt/2aUBEnc
You are a pilgrim now, one of the Created. You rose to life from dead flesh or inert matter, under the ministrations of one of your own, or a mad scientist, or perhaps just the power of the Divine Fire. You wander the world, sometimes alone, sometimes in the blessed company of your own kind, driven by memories of events and facts you never knew, all in the service of one Great Work…
…to be human.
Humans don’t make it easy, though. The Divine Fire that animates you burns too bright, blinds people, and scorches the land if you linger too long. It masks your disfigurements and makes you appear human, but that mask slips and people see your hideous, true form. The Pilgrimage is a long, difficult road, but it is yours, and you know, somehow, that the salvation of the New Dawn waits at the end.
This book contains:
The complete guide to playing a Promethean in the Chronicles of Darkness
Reimagined Lineages and Refinements, and a redesigned system for Transmutations
A more detailed approached to the Pilgrimage that presents players with more control over their characters’ path
New challenges on the road to humanity, including deranged, greedy alchemists
      CONVENTIONS!
Onyx Path will be at Mid Winter Con 2017 this week in the lovely city of Milwaukee. Come brave the cold wastes to game and cavort with us! Please keep an eye out on the MidWinter site for announcements as to our very special beta test and Play With The Creator special events! http://ift.tt/Lfx9nY
Here are three reasons to attend, if you had any doubts!:
RPG Playing! We have once again convinced Dave Martin and his Wrecking Crew team of game masters to run a vast plethora of Onyx Path games. Everything from World of Darkness to Scion to Cavaliers of Mars and Pugmire, as well as a bunch of Prince’s Gambit casual vampire card game sessions. We have a whole ballroom dedicated to our games this year, so sign up and play.
RPG Playtests! Onyx Path loves to use MidWinter as a sort of test-lab for our games, and this year is no exception! Eddy Webb will be playtesting Monarchies of Mau, the cat follow-up to the smash-hit Pugmire, as well as a couple of card game projects he has been tinkering with. Rose Bailey will be running a playtest sneak-peak of Cavaliers of Mars, and Neall Raemonn Price may have some Scion 2e goodness to share.
The Onyx Path Gang! Yep, a bunch of us will be at MidWinter, and not only will we be at the intimate Onyx Q&A listed during the events, but we’ll be at our booth in the sales area, at other events, hanging out in our gaming room with the Wrecking Crew, or just sitting back and chatting around the hotel. MidWinter is a great venue to speak with us as it is nowhere near as hectic as GenCon, and we have fewer business commitments. So look for me, Rose, Eddy, Neall, Monica, Matt McElroy, and a bunch of our awesome creative contributors too!
And now, the new project status updates!

☃️ Winter: A Folio Anthology edited by Sue Bradbury, introduced by Susan Cooper
Rating: 🌟🌟🌟/5
Published in 2016, the Folio Society had a series of four small anthologies for each season. Since it’s December I pulled out the Winter anthology to get some seasonal reading in. This one was one of my favorite ones so far (out of Summer, Autumn, and Winter) because winter is my favorite season! The anecdotes were fun and very seasonal, although a lot of them were about Christmas and I’m not a celebrator of that holiday. Still, a fun collection!

☀️ Summer: A Folio Anthology edited by Sue Bradbury
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
In 2018 The Folio Society came out with a series of four seasonal anthologies- Autumn, Winter, Spring, and Summer. I found all four at my work and bought them, starting off with Summer since that’s the current season. I plan to read each one in their time to give it a more atmospheric approach.
Summer is probably my least-favorite season due to the humidity in Minnesota and I tend to burn in the sun. BUT this summer has been absolutely amazing thanks to my friends and I felt happy to read something of the Summer aesthetic. This book is filled with lots of hints and outright love for the summer day, having writings by authors like Edward Thomas, Leo Tolstoy, Christina Rossetti, and Edith Sitwell.
Some of the selections felt a bit out of place, that’s why I’m not giving this book four stars, but I did greatly enjoy this small selection, so three stars seems appropriate.
