Riding in Stilettos
Part 2
Tumblr media
Pairing: Daryl Dixon x OG Female Character
Synopsis: When a rich influencer's private jet makes an emergency landing in the backwoods of Georgia, she finds herself stranded in a place where WiFi is a myth and high fashion means a clean pair of boots. Enter a gruff, no-nonsense biker who reluctantly offers her a ride to the nearest city. He thinks she's insufferable; she thinks he's a prehistoric caveman. In no universe that they are made for each other. But fate—or bad luck—has other plans.

Part 1
Tumblr media
Daryl's POV
I had a bad feeling about this damn day from the moment I rolled outta bed. Maybe it was the way the air felt too still, too thick with the promise of trouble. Or maybe it was just my gut, warning me like it always did before something stupid happened. Either way, I shoulda listened.
I liked to keep to myself. Always had. My life was simple—hunt, trade, sell just enough to keep the local bastards off my back, and stay far away from people who looked like trouble.
And right now? Trouble was standing in front of me, wearing four-inch heels and a scowl that could melt paint off a barn.
Madeleine LaRue. Even her name sounded like something expensive. The kinda name that belonged in a penthouse somewhere, not stuck in the middle of Georgia, waving down strangers like she had a damn death wish.
I exhaled, slow and measured, already regretting this whole situation. I shoulda just started my bike and rode off when I saw her marching across the lot, all legs and attitude, but something made me wait. Maybe curiosity. Maybe stupidity. Probably both.
Now, she was planting herself in front of me like a damn roadblock, her designer purse hanging off one wrist like an afterthought.
"Ya gonna move, princess?" I asked, arching a brow.
Her arms crossed over her chest, pushing up against that tiny little top like she thought she could intimidate me. "Not until you agree to take me."
I let out a dry chuckle, digging my boot into the gravel. "You got a death wish, or just bad judgment?"
She huffed, tossing her hair over one shoulder. "Oh, please. Like I'd be safer sitting around here, waiting for some toothless hillbilly to come sniffing around."
I smirked, scratching at my beard. "Ya do realize I'm one of those hillbillies, right?"
She gave me a once-over, eyes flicking over my worn-out leather jacket, the scuffed-up boots, the knife strapped to my thigh. "You've got some teeth. That's a start."
I shook my head, fighting back a laugh. Lord, this woman had a mouth on her. I should walk away. Leave her to her own damn devices. But when I glanced toward the gas station, I noticed a couple of locals eyeing Madeleine like she was fresh meat. They weren't just looking—they were planning.
Yeah. This was a bad situation waiting to happen.
I muttered a curse under my breath and swung a leg over my bike. "Get on."
Madeleine blinked. "Wait, really?"
"Changed my mind." I jerked my chin toward the gas station. "Unless ya'd rather hang 'round and see what happens when they get brave."
She followed my gaze, her lips pressing into a thin line when she saw the way the men were watching her. With a small shudder, she turned back to me. "Fine. But if you kidnap me, just know that millions of people will come looking for me."
I snorted. "Yeah? Well, tell 'em to send me a thank-you card when they find out what a pain in the ass ya are."
Before she could argue, I reached behind me and grabbed a spare helmet, holding it out. "Put this on."
She wrinkled her nose. "Do you know how much bacteria is in a used helmet?"
"Do ya know how much brain matter is on the pavement when someone flies off a bike?"
She paled. "Fine."
With a dramatic sigh, she slipped the helmet on and climbed onto the bike behind me, her arms hovering awkwardly at her sides.
I rolled my eyes. "Ain't gotta be shy, princess. Wrap 'em around me, or you'll be eatin' dirt the second I hit the gas."
She hesitated, then, with a huff, looped her arms around my waist. It was stiff and reluctant, like touching me might physically hurt her.
I smirked. "Relax. I don't bite."
"Good," she muttered. "I just had my vaccines updated."
With a chuckle, I revved the engine, feeling her grip tighten. "Hold on tight, sweetheart."
And with that, we shot forward, tearing down the road and leaving that sorry little airstrip behind.
"What's your name, old man?" She asked as soon as we left.
"Daryl." I grumbled at her choice of words. Old. "Daryl Dixon."
The road stretched ahead, long and winding. The air was thick with the scent of pine and dirt, the sky burning orange as the sun started its slow descent. I felt the way Madeleine tensed behind me, like she wasn't sure whether to trust me or keep plotting her escape. Her grip was tight at first, like she was afraid she'd go flying off if she let go, but after a few miles, she relaxed. Just a little.
Didn't stop her from grumbling every few minutes, though. Something about the wind messing up her hair. As if I gave a damn.
We rode in silence for a long while, the hum of the engine the only sound between us. The highway stretched ahead, miles of cracked asphalt and overgrown brush, the occasional abandoned car rusting away on the side of the road. The deeper we got into the backroads, the further we were from anything she'd recognize. The realization musta hit her at some point because she leaned in closer and shouted over the wind, "Where exactly are we going?"
"Someplace with less creeps starin' at ya like a meal," I called back.
"That's not an answer!"
I smirked, giving the throttle a little more gas. She let out a yelp, her grip tightening around my waist.
"You're insane!" she shouted.
"Yeah, well, yer the one who jumped in front of my bike," I reminded her. "So what's that make ya?"
She didn't have a comeback for that. Instead, she just muttered something under her breath and rested her forehead against my back, probably planning all the ways she was gonna make my life hell once we got wherever we were going.
I shoulda been worried about what I'd just gotten myself into. About what kind of mess this woman was about to bring down on my head.
But instead, all I could think was—
This was gonna be one hell of a ride.

I want The Amazing Devil to go on tour, they have almost 300k monthly listeners on spotify, that has to be worth a small concert hall tour, right?  Or even just a few shows and releasing a live concert in full for people who can’t make it to enjoy?
I want The Amazing Devil on vinyl!  Their music was made for analog sound, it’s so layered and complex and vinyl makes me feel like the music is caressing my skin in the best way.  I want to feel soothed by “Fair,” I want the hairs on my hairs to stand on end when I listen to “That Unwanted Animal,”  I want to ache in my chest at the visceral low-fi recording of “Two Minutes,” I want to cry until I drown from the sound of “The Calling” on vinyl.  doesn’t have to be a big press!  Just a little press!  If Ben Barnes can do it, he sold out his press and he is not NEARLY as popular musically, 71k monthly listeners on spotify.
Like, a tour or vinyl would be a dream.  Both would be heaven.  make it happen, Joey and Madeleine!
pretty please? <3 <3  I would pay premium fucking prices for a vinyl, even if the shipping from across the pond was 30 bucks, it would be SO worth it.

Modern Humans AU - CR:K
OKAY SO, me and a friend have been working (on and off) on a Cookie Run: Modern Humans AU ever since summer of last year.'
Tumblr media
While the AU takes place in an alternate reality of ours (America, France, etc etc) do exist, but other fictional countries like Estuilor do! This is where the AU mainly takes place in, particularly in Holmur County that is located in the largest region (Jouhun) of Estuilor.
The country itself has French as a second language while its main language is Estuilsur. This is the entire list of Cookies we have included so far, including OCs!
White Lily Pure Vanilla Wildberry Crunchy Chip Sea Bunny (OC) Snow Leopard (OC) Moonflower (OC) Dark Cacao Dark Choco Royalberry Moonlight Stardust Sea Fairy Sorbet Shark Herb Sparkling Mojito (OC) Herbling (OC) Basil (OC) Golden Cheese Rich Cheese Sweet Dream (OC) Cloudy Pyrite (OC) Oat Milk (OC) Ristretto (OC) Latte Cashew (OC) Rose Champagne (OC) Pecan (OC) Marzipan (OC) Blanc de Noirs (OC) Blueberry Pie Blueberry Eclair Eclair Grand Madeleine Teacake (OC?) Sea Salt Madeleine Glazed Madeleine Honey Madeleine Financier Madeleine Espresso Macchiato (OC) Chouquette (OC) Strawberry Crepe Affogato Roguefort Black Pearl Captain Caviar Squid Ink Larimar (OC) Coral (OC) Pastry Red Velvet
Pure Vanilla is currently a retired ER Nurse and is now a Botanist, White Lily works in pathology, Espresso is a former Math Teacher now Chemist (he subs in sometimes), Madeleine is a military general of the army, Dark Cacao is a former military general, Wildberry and Crunchy Chip run a massive sheep farm (with Snow Leopard as their recon / barn cat), Golden Cheese & Black Pearl run their respective jewel stores and are rivals... This is the simple list of everyone's jobs, not everyone currently has one but will soon! I don't believe we won't add anyone more to the cast until we have finished filling in all of the current info of our cast.
Once I and my wonderful friend have completed all of the basics, I may open a ask blog for this au (it is quite vast!), and do not worry, the google docs detailing the world and these au variants of our beloved characters will be released soon-ish!
Sorry for all of the tags and i can't every single character ^^'

TADC prequel AU nonsense I need to get out. How the cast's families handled their disappearances
Thalia Aberg (Gangle):
Her parents initially blamed each other for it, just like they'd spent most of Thalia's life doing. Eventually, her mother started to blame herself, unable to rationalize it being entirely her ex-husband's fault, especially when she had no idea what happened to her. Thalia's disappearance became an obsession, with her repeatedly checking the news and searching her daughter's name, and eventually the lack of answers drove her into a depression. She ended up remarrying to fill that void. Her father blames her mother with a fury, and used to tell everyone he could about how it was all his ex-wife's fault he lost his daughter before his anger ended up leading him into other, more self-destructive habits. Unlike her mother, he never found another family- he couldn't. He wanted Thalia back, and he was angry at the world that he wouldn't get her back.
Ari Srinivas (Zooble):
The first few days Ari was gone, their parents called them nonstop. They were racking up nearly a hundred missed calls a day, and when that number passed twenty was when Ari's parents called the cops. Without any trace of them, they were only left to assume the worst. They ended up telling Ari's little siblings that they had run away but that they were working on tracking them down, it would just be a very slow process. Ari's siblings idolized them, and their mom knew it would crush them to hear that their sibling had simply disappeared without a trace and there was nothing to be done about it. Their dad was against lying, especially since the both of them believed Ari was dead, but their mom insisted on it. Their siblings are still holding onto hope that Ari will come home someday, and their parents don't have the heart to dissuade them.
Madeleine & Arthur Hamilton (Queenie & Kinger):
Their daughter firmly believes that her parents are dead. After their disappearance, she was in foster care for a while before eventually being taken in by Arthur's brother. She finds comfort in dressing like her mother (namely, in her mother's favorite colors), but has become a bit of an emotional mess since her parents' disappearance, believing she's going to die soon as well. Madeleine's sisters still come to the Hamilton family's reunions sometimes, though it's more to see and offer support to their niece than anything to do with Arthur's family. Unlike Madeleine's daughter, her sisters don't believe that Madeleine and Arthur are dead, but don't have any explanation as to what did happen to them, (rightfully) not believing the two of them to ever be the type to intentionally abandon their child. Arthur's brother knows exactly what happened to them, but has no plans to continue trying to reverse it.
Annabelle Parker (Ragatha):
First and foremost, her family's farm fell apart fast, because Annabelle was the one running it. Her remaining brother and sister briefly ran it in her stead, hoping to have it in good condition for when she returned, and then realizing she wasn't going to return, they gave up. Their animals were sold off, and it now simply stands as an empty barn a hundred or so feet from Annabelle's empty house that had once belonged to the whole family. Her parents live not too far away, still holding out hope that god will bring their daughters back to them. Both of her remaining siblings live far away, trying to get as much distance from their losses as possible.
Tucker Iscariot (Jax):
His parents had literally no idea what happened to him, and frankly, they don't care. Tucker could be dead for all they knew, and they'd just sit back and pretend they never had a son. They'd long since painted over and repurposed his old bedroom, thrown out what belongings he'd left behind, trashed any photos with him in them, and gone about their lives as if they'd never had a son. It made no difference to them when Tucker went missing.
Joshua Baird (Kaufmo):
Joshua's husband took it pretty hard, but tried to stay positive for a long time after Joshua's disappearance, since that's what Joshua always insisted on. He ended up trying to fill the void that Joshua left in their community by becoming an active member of lots of different things in the months and years that followed, trying his best to simply not think about what he was missing (which, of course, didn't work). It wasn't out of a lack of care for Joshua, but rather that he really didn't think he could possibly cope with the thought of what might have happened to Joshua to cause him to simply disappear one day. He tried to file a lawsuit against Joshua's place of employment, but there was no case to be made that they were at fault for whatever had happened to him. People largely just pitied his husband as a grieving man who'd lost someone he loved, but tried to be kind to him to make things better for him.
Sophia Lamb (Pomni):
Sophia's mother was of the belief that her daughter was a dramatic person who sought attention, and so, despite Sophia's life seeming to be going well, thought very little of her disappearance, assuming it to simply be a play for pity. It took a while before things started to register as seriously wrong in her mind. It was sometime after she realized that no one else thought this was in-character for Sophia and even began to suspect foul play. After that, she started searching for any proof that her daughter was either alive or dead, and after a while of nothing, began to assume she had died and even hosted a funeral for her.

Would you be in the mood to do a quick hc of what it would be like to romance Kiara? Like what kind of person would you have to be to catch her eye? If you're bad at learning languages would that be a turn off of hers? I just didn't understand what she saw in Drake lol it felt so random when they wrote that in lol
Hello, @masked-alien-lesbian! Thank you so much for another lovely Kiara ask - I love talking about her, Hana and Liam xD
So! HC's on Kiara as a love interest? I'm game!! 😃 (It's going to be long tho...I am incapable of writing anything quick sorry!! 🙈)
So I had my own thoughts, but I also often discuss Kiara (and our other common fave characters) with a group of close friends (thank you so much for the additional inputs, @cassiopeiacorvus, @thecapturedafrique and @mand-delemonde! 🤗🤗🤗). I found that we agreed on several things when it came to writing Kiara romantically, and the kind of person we liked to pair her with. These things I found the most important:
A Respect for Diplomacy.
I feel like even if they don't show an inclination, it's alright as long as they do not look down on the value of diplomacy and diplomatic relations.
I can see her even with someone who may be militaristic in their approach, as long as they value diplomacy. Having someone who is their opposite in approach can be beneficial as a match as that allows for different perspectives but there should be a healthy respect from both sides.
An Enthusiasm for Learning.
I feel like they don't need to even be the most knowledgeable person in the room, but there should be a willingness to be open to different perspectives. Kiara is herself someone who likes to learn new things and educate herself. I feel like she would want someone who shows that kind of energy and respects her love for her pursuits as well.
An Appreciation for Different Cultures.
I can see her with someone who likes travel, loves to explore different cultures, and yes - would like to learn languages. I don't think they need to be polyglots like her and her family, but someone she can talk about nuances of language with who would find joy in those discussions, and not look at it as some weird interest, or look down on her for it, or doubt her proficiency (Madeleine, the MC and Maxwell do this at least once each in the original series).
From what I've seen in canon, she has never shown any disdain for people who don't know French as well as she does (eg. In Lythikos in TRR1, she is only offended when you ask her to sleep with you in French). People in fandom have called her a snob for this skill, and the MC in TRR3 was allowed to do the same...but tbh she doesn't show any snobbery through this skill or when other people aren't as good at it. So I can definitely see her happier with someone who is willing to explore different cultures with respect and enthusiasm, than someone who doesn't care or looks upon these pursuits with disdain.
Physicality
So this section, and the next, is where I get into what the narrative has to say about Kiara's feelings for Drake. The first time we get a hint of that is when Kiara gets flustered seeing Drake shirtless in TRR2 Ch3 during the barn raising (if you choose to partner with Drake). She also pays attention to the fit of his suit, as you can see in TRR3 Ch 7 when a single Drake comes with the group to her province. In TRH, she talks of liking more rugged, down-to-earth men if the MC is married to Drake. So at least in terms of men that's what canon claims she may like, but that can always change!
In terms of women...canon doesn't say much about her sexuality either way (except that she initially seems shocked during Savannah's bachelorette if you ask her to play bed-wed-dead with female options, but she does proceed then to pick options! Olivia to sleep with, Penelope to marry). So anything is game!! In my personal headcanon (and I mention this in a story of mine titled "The Perfect Gift") that she is "woefully specific" in the kind of man she wants, but finds herself attracted to a wide range of women. So physicality and personality wise I can see her with a wide range of women, ranging from very masculine presenting to ultra feminine presenting femmes.
Loyalty to Friends and Family.
I have begun to realize that very often fandom tends to limit Kiara's feelings for Drake to just the previous point, and assumes that canonically all she feels for him is just plain lust. I feel this ignores something Kiara herself tells us in TRR2 Ch4, during the garden party. There, Kiara tells us that her fondness for Drake began when they were younger - seeing his loyalty and dedication to his friend Liam.
Kiara herself is affectionate in her own way towards her friends and family, though she also employs "tough love". Very often she guides and defends Penelope and Zeke, even though they sometimes frustrate her. She also is from a family that shows an abundance of love and care for each other, and I would think she would appreciate a spouse who would appreciate and value her family as well. So yes, I can see her highly valuing loyalty and filial relationships, especially healthy balanced filial relationships. I cannot see her with someone who would view the people she loves and values with disdain.
And while Kiara herself may not require this as a character, I would like to see the people around her show the same loyalty and love towards her as well. Unfortunately in canon, even Penelope and Ezekiel - her own best friend and brother - don't give back the same energy that she gives out for them. So my hc always is that the person she is with gels well with her family and friends, but also gives her the attention and focus and care she deserves.
--
In terms of turn offs for Kiara, a big turn-off I can see for her based on canon would be people overstepping their boundaries, or showing ostentatious behaviour designed to show off their power. She initially allies with both Olivia and Madeleine and different points in the series, but shows visible frustration when they get drunk on their own power and abuse their position. I can see this play out even more intensely in a romantic situation. Kiara won't suffer fools or people who play too many games.
I don't think not knowing languages would be a turn off, but not showing a basic interest or at least a healthy respect, for her interests will. I cannot see her staying with a person who looks down on learning languages, or cultural diversity, for too long. I feel like she needs to be happy talking to her partner and engaging them in conversation, and you can't have that with someone who may look down on your passions.
--
Now to get to the point about Drake! In some ways I'm kind of okay with the randomness of it - after all, the team was on a bit of a "pair the spares" spree in TRR2, where every LI got an alternative LI (TRR was somewhat unique in this respect - very often alternatives would be given only to whichever LI the team deemed the least popular). Clearly the only alternative LI they had planned somewhat was Olivia and Liam, so of course Driara (and Maxwell x Penelope, which was introduced in TRR2 Ch 6, and didn't last very long) would feel a little random.
However, given Kiara is a very practical woman in canon itself...one could still figure out a way to make such a scenario fit with her character. I could always headcanon that she couldn't show any indication of her feelings in the social season where she was a competitor, and it would make sense! And now that the competition is over and the Prince made his final choice, she could feel free to pursue or at least interact with the man she really liked.
Back when I shipped Drake and Kiara, I thought there could be potential in terms of an opposites-attract scenario. I liked the idea of Kiara nursing a secret fondness for earthy, rugged men, as well as the possibility of Drake realizing that not all nobles were evil through someone like Kiara. And there were some scenes at least in TRR2 where Drake seemed like he could view her differently (and be a total weirdo about it) like the option in the prank scene, where he could leave a cute note to her.
Had the narrative actually cared about Kiara, and viewed Drake as someone who needed to grow from his own prejudices, I believe there was a possibility for a good relationship there.
Unfortunately the narrative dislikes proving Drake wrong, and doesn't mind throwing Kiara under the bus...which was why, when Drake stans spewed their racist vitriol all over Kiara during TRR3, the end result we got in TRR3 (where they "confirmed" how much Drake disliked Kiara) was equally racist. That is ultimately why I would never, ever go for Driara...but there was some potential if Drake showed any interest in growing and evolving beyond his puny mindset.
Above all to me, I need the person I pair Kiara up with, to center her as much in their relationship as she would them. Which is why Drake is not even worth considering as a partner for her, IMO...and why I wouldn't go for Penelope either even though she and Kiara are a popular fandom pair. Kiara's friendship with Penelope centers too much around her, and Penelope (in canon especially) brings none of that energy when Kiara would most need it.
To sum it up? I feel like personality wise I wouldn't mind someone who could balance out her practicality and rational bent of mind with a more emotional approach, and someone who would take pride and joy in her interests and achievements. Someone she can have fun talking to, and someone who would fiercely protect and defend her as much as she would do so for them. (In my universe, that's basically Hana 😄)
I hope this helped and didn't confuse you too much!! 🙈🙈

– Eurovisionen bör inte bjuda in Israel, säger Nooshi Dadgostar.

Great American Novels
Time for another of those "look at a list of Great Novels and see how many I've read" things - though my memory does begin to fail me a bit, especially when it comes to 'worthy' books that I may have heard *of* a lot but not actually read.
The Great Gatsby
Yes, for school. Was I particularly taken with it? No. Never bothered watching any movie adaptation and can never remember what it was about in detail, I always have to look it up.
-
An American Tragedy, Theodore Dreiser
Author name sounds familiar, but I dont know what this book is without looking it up… nope, have not read this. It's public domain now so I could, I guess.
-
The Making of Americans, Gertrude Stein
I've heard of her. I have not read this book.
-
Death Comes for the Archbishop, Willa Cather
I have heard of Willa Cather and may have read something by her but probably not this.
-
A Farewell To Arms, Hemingway
Obviously know who Hemingway is but cannot tell you whether I've read this or not. I don't know, sorry.
-
Passing, Nella Larsen
No familiarity.
-
The Sound and the Fury + Absalom, Absalom, Faulkner
I don't like Faulkner. This opinion likely stems from ahving been forced to read something he wrote in school and being annoyed by it. However, I can't tell you what I read. I've read about both of these and may or may not have read some part of one of them at some point.
-
Nightwood, Djuna Barnes
No familiarity, but now that I look it up on wikipedia, I need to actually go find that for research purposes, this seems relevant to my interests.
-
East Goes West, Younghill Kang
Never heard of it, I assume it has to do with the Chinese in California? Oops, no, Korean, sorry.
-
Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston
Heard of it. Haven't read it.

During his month as a writer-in-residence at the James Merrill House in Stonington, Connecticut, in 2022, Chris Spaide’s favorite place to spend time was the Pulitzer Prize–winning author’s office. Merrill, who died in 1995, had designed the cozy nook so it was easy to move from working on his latest poem at one of two desks to playing Solitaire or reading on the burnt orange daybed. And, in a playful nod to childhood fantasy, the whole room was tucked away behind a secret door masquerading as a bookcase, its own hidden world. A critic and poet in his own right, Spaide spent some days writing at one of the desks. But mostly he contemplated the contents of the room itself, looking through Merrill’s prodigious postcard and record collections or lounging on the daybed.

When he wasn’t in the office, Spaide pored over the rest of the eccentrically decorated apartment, seeking crumbs of understanding. A self-professed “true nerd” of Merrill’s work, who has taught a six-part course on the topic, Spaide took this endeavor seriously. In the kitchen he browsed the cookbooks and admired Merrill’s madeleine pan (“he was a great fan of Proust”). Examining the board games, Spaide found old scorekeeping notes stashed in the Scrabble set. And he made it a project to flip through every single one of Merrill’s books during his stay, looking for scribbles. “I really went in to do fieldwork, to live in his house and life,” Spaide says. Some days he spent sixteen hours straight exploring the apartment.
This kind of deep immersion into a literary hero’s everyday world is possible only for participants of a particular kind of program, one that has become increasingly popular in recent years: the writer’s residency at a famous author’s house. At some of these residencies, writers cook, sleep, and work in the historic location. In others (like the Merrill House) they stay nearby but are given remarkable access to the home. Regardless, these programs offer both the luxury of space and time to write and the chance to have a close-up encounter with a writer they’ve long admired—sometimes so close it can feel a little uncomfortable.

Many of these residencies bolster attendees’ work in the same ways more standard programs do. They offer much-needed financial support for struggling writers, organize small cohorts that become close friends, and provide key opportunities for cross-pollination among fellows. Residencies at Millay Arts, run out of the classic Sears-kit barn that Edna St. Vincent Millay erected with her husband next to their home in upstate New York in 1926, have been nurturing artists and writers for a half century. Because the residency is open to writers across genres and artists across disciplines, visiting fiction writers are often moved to write poetry, and playwrights are inspired to pen essays. “You feel this presence of fifty years of other people putting their creative work in; you feel the energy,” says Calliope Nicholas, the Millay Arts codirector and manager of residency programs. The program also features the services of an on-site chef who does the grocery shopping and prepares communal dinners.
At the residency offered by the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum, writers stay on the town square in tiny Piggott, Arkansas, where Ernest Hemingway often visited the family of his then wife, Pauline, beginning in the late 1920s. In one program highlight, participants are invited to write in the studio where the author worked on A Farewell to Arms (1929). They also receive a $1,000 stipend and teach a workshop for local writers during their stay. Adam Long, executive director of Arkansas State University’s heritage sites, says many visiting professors find the workshop to be a refreshing escape from the insularity of MFA culture, especially since participants tend to focus on memoir or Southern-style family storytelling over literary fiction. Still, some people struggle with the isolation of staying in an unknown small town and the practicalities of rural life. With their needs in mind, Long has assembled a set of survival tips and advice he tries to give fellows as they arrive. Lesson one: Forget at your peril that Arkansas restaurants still close on Sundays.
Other challenges associated with this type of residency are less mundane, involving the quirks of working in historic homes. Residents at Hemingway-Pfeiffer must schedule time in advance to work in Hemingway’s office, for example, “as opposed to if we were on an academic campus and I could give them a key,” Long says. There they work at a nonarchival desk within the author’s studio, to avoid damaging the historic item. And they are permitted to bring only water inside—a challenge for the many perennially caffeinated writers who visit.
Elsewhere, residents at the Carson McCullers Center for Writers and Musicians, a museum devoted to the writer in her childhood home in Columbus, Georgia, must contend with occasional tours and events in their space. Nonfiction writer Jennifer Hope Choi, who completed a residency there in 2017, remembers finding it unsettling to wake up to strangers in the yard or rummaging through the fridge. “I wasn’t quite sure who would show up, if they’d have access to the house,” she says.
To many fellows these complications are a small price to pay for the chance to uncover some deeper truth about beloved writers—to sit where they sat, touch what they touched. “When you’re walking through the property, you can imagine how it looked through her eyes when she was around,” says Nicholas about Millay. That sense of place, built through the prosaic detritus of an author’s life, can inspire feelings of deep connection, Long adds. That’s what brings tourists to the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum, he says, “and I think that’s also why writers want to come. Place helps us to connect with stories.”
For program participants in Piggott, that might mean working in Hemingway’s studio, surrounded by his personal effects. (Long’s favorite is the unopened box of clay pigeons addressed to the author.) It also might mean exploring the area, which Hemingway loved for its nature and quiet. For residents at Millay Arts, it might mean wandering in the author’s gardens, which are otherwise closed to the public; imagining her hosting wild parties on the property (no clothes allowed in the pool); or visiting the family gravesite where her ashes were scattered. For Spaide at Merrill House, it meant an unprecedented opportunity to dig for morsels of insight into the writer and his work. Having previously authored an academic article about Merrill’s relationship to Asia, Spaide found it enlightening to sift through the books and souvenirs Merrill had brought home from his travels there. He especially loved stumbling on an accordion-folded Japanese notebook inscribed with his poem “The Summer People.”
Similarly, when writer and archivist Jenn Shapland spent a month at the McCullers Center as she researched the author’s unfinished biographies—a sort of unofficial residency—she sat at Carson McCullers’s desk, soaked in the upstairs tub, and watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer on the (slipcovered) couch where the author wrote the 1961 novel Clock Without Hands. Spending time among the ordinary trappings of McCullers’s life, she says, “I was able to see Carson as just a person and see myself trying to inhabit her life and understand her. And perhaps most importantly, my time in the house showed me the limits of my ability to know her.”
Shapland found living in a functioning museum to be “unsettlingly material,” somehow simultaneously uncanny and homey. But for some writers that mix of material intimacy and otherworldliness can be thoroughly discomfiting. Though she was deeply grateful for the time, space, and support the residency provided, “when you’re surrounded by a deceased person’s belongings, it’s not exactly joyful,” Choi says. She found the house’s main exhibit room, which features photos of McCullers, along with her glasses, cane, and tea set, “incredibly creepy” and avoided it when she could. “Generally speaking, living there alone was very scary,” she says. She acknowledges that the feeling was compounded by the project she was there to research, which focused on a Georgia serial killer. But Choi has heard other former fellows express feelings of unease as well, including whispers about encounters with ghosts.
Even Spaide, with his exploratory zeal, felt that chill. Some early fellows stayed directly in Merrill’s apartment, rather than in the current designated lodgings at his partner’s next door. “I was never tempted because I would have been too spooked out,” Spaide says. (Still, that didn’t stop him from using the home’s resident Ouija board; Merrill was a famous enthusiast.) Beyond supernatural concerns, Spaide also sought not to cross the subtle line he saw between enthusiastic visitor and something more invasive. Peeking at Scrabble scores and inside books felt like friendly inquiry; sleeping in Merrill’s bed felt, somehow, very different. “I wanted to be a good guest; I didn’t want to do anything I wouldn’t do with a generous host,” Spaide says.
At Millay Arts, the writers tend to take any inherent spookiness in gleeful stride. Sure, the metal fruit baskets that hang in the kitchen might occasionally move when there’s no breeze. But that doesn’t stop residents from watching scary movies together or conducting midnight rituals by the family gravesite, imbibing Millay’s favorite liquor, Nicholas says. “Millay loved gin, so they’ll do gin libations and start feeding each other ghost stories, and it starts to build up from there.”
Though she didn’t take issue with the eerier aspects of staying in the historic home surrounded by the belongings of a long-dead family, Shapland did find the experience remarkable. “The rest of the house, apart from the kitchen, was museum territory, and it was hard to distinguish what was house from what was museum,” she says. “I ended up getting a lot out of this liminality.” That experience eventually played an important role in her genre-bending book, My Autobiography of Carson McCullers (Tin House, 2020).
In many cases, that strange magic of the in-between, combined with the intimacy of submerging so fully in an artist’s material life, seems to affect residents in unexpected ways. Writers frequently report newfound clarity and insight, as well as productivity that takes surprising forms.
At Hemingway-Pfeiffer, residents “seem surprised a lot of times by how rewarding that workshop is,” Long says. At Millay Arts, Nicholas finds it “fun to watch people coming in who have a set objective of what they want to accomplish from their time here, but they end up having paradigm shifts.”
And despite Choi’s discomfort with her surroundings at the McCullers Center, her experience there figures significantly in The Wanderer’s Curse, forthcoming in 2025 from W. W. Norton. Before she arrived a friend advised her to be gentle with herself and flexible about the idea of how working there might look. “Reading is something; sitting there is something,” the friend told her, adding, “What comes from it all might not be what you expect.”
Seven years later, the little details and offhand observations Choi began writing down in an attempt to record the textures of her experience at the house—one favorite example is the industrial carpet mailers that arrived addressed to “Mr. Carston McCuller”—have taken on greater weight. With enough hindsight those notes became an essential resource, a contemporaneous reflection of what “ended up being incredibly crucial and actually a significant turning point in my life,” she says.
Spaide similarly struggled with productivity anxiety before his stay at the Merrill House. But once he arrived, it became clear that the exploration of Merrill’s belongings was the work—that “sifting through his board game collection and looking at his fancy wooden dominoes gave me important information,” he says. With that approach in mind, watching sunrises or sunsets through the apartment windows as Merrill once did, finding unexpected annotations in his books, and daydreaming at his desk behind that remarkable hinged bookcase became just as worthwhile as sketching out new poems or essays. “It was incredibly productive and enlightening, and I hope to never forget what I learned there,” he adds, “and I hardly wrote anything.”
Alissa Greenberg is an independent journalist based in Boston and Berkeley, California, who reports at the intersection of science, history, and culture. Her work has appeared in the Atlantic, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Washington Post, the New Yorker, Smithsonian, National Geographic, and elsewhere. If she could be a resident at any author’s home, she would choose that of Nellie Bly.
