Finally trying out Wingspan! It was fine! I wouldn’t play it with more than 2-3 players though, very solitaire-y. It reminded me a little bit of Dinosaur Island actually, although obliquely. This has gotten several rounds of coverage in mainstream periodicals, including the NYT, which leaves me a bit mystified - the actual gameplay has a very niche, hobbyist aesthetic, so I’m not sure why Wingspan in particular drew this kind of notice - if the designer has contacts in journalism, or if it was just kind of random. If you’re living in the hobbyist game market today and have played Stonemaier games you probably know exactly what this is like: point salad, individual player board, tableau building, minimal player interaction, slow, minimal thematic material and low setting integration but very attractively rendered. It was more or less exactly what I expected given my experience with this brand (even though it’s not designed by Jamey!) and from just looking at it set up at the table at game nights - although I would say it’s the best Stonemaier Game I’ve played just because the mechanics of the design are, while still not elegant, relatively clean; Jamey himself usually makes game that are pretty cluttered up. I would say that for this reason it exceeded expectations somewhat as a two player game just because it’s relatively brisk and clean, and I can see enjoying it for a bit just because I’m not immune to the charm of the setting or the nice production.
