[book 1 + slight show s1e1 - s1e3 spoilers]
It Was Always The Plan.
It had to be believable, that’s what they told him. They worked the plan into his scrawny little frame, until he knew and believed in it with every fiber of his being.
It had to be believable, to the last detail, and so he was starved till the brink of death. He clutched his burning abdomen, staring with wide, wet eyes as they sealed the crate, and sent him to Skree.
It was always the plan.
That didn’t mean he wanted to do this anymore than Oskar. Knife in shaky fingers, Zouzab lunged for the throat.

apologies in advance but my agenda now and henceforth will be getting as many people into The Wingfeather Saga as possible. I Will be the best publicity this show could ever want and if it results in restraining orders being taken against me, then at least I will know that I have done everything I could.

This is based on a scene of Wingfeather Saga's animated sereis, in this moment, sometime after the 3 protagonists scaped from a feng (a kind of lizardman) Leele started singing near to the edge of the clift on dragon day and something fantastic start happening. For those who don't know, Wingfeather Saga is a christian book series and animated series with a Narnia/Lord of Rings style, i recommend you to whatch as soon as possible!

**This post will have spoilers if you haven’t read books 2-4 of The Wingfeather Saga**
So I was thinking about Wingfeather things and I accidentally realized something really significant about Janner.
Janner has the ability to remind someone of who they are. There is something about him that reminds people to have hope and courage, to be noble and hold on, to fight for the light. I think the first time this happens is with Sara in the Fork Factory, and this one is made abundantly clear to us because Sara thinks many times about “the light he left behind”. Janner reminded Sara that there is hope, that there is life still outside of the factory walls, and that they can escape the place they’re in. And that rekindles the light and hope in Sara’s heart and she spreads it like wildfire to all the children around her.
He does it at the end of book 2 with Kalmar (and then never really stops through books 3 and 4) when he brings his brother back from being a Fang. He tells Kal stories about who he was, about their silly adventures in Glipwood, and Kalmar breaks through the fear and hate and anger that fills his little Fang mind and comes back to himself. Janner reminds Kal over and over “Your name is Kalmar Wingfeather, son of Esben, High King of Anniera”. He helps Kalmar keep his mind through the Blackwood and the Deeps of Throg. Janner’s very presence helps with this when nothing else does.
Janner does this again for Artham at the beginning of book 3, when Artham has a panic attack and the Hollowsfolk start trying to kill him. Janner doesn’t have time now like he did with Sara and Kalmar, but he still manages to remind his uncle of who he is (their protector and guardian) when he just straight up jumps out of a tree and trusts Artham will catch him. And Artham does and his mind is cleared. I think this shows us that Janner just has an intuition for this, because here he doesn’t really have time to think.
The last one is a more of a joint effort, but at the end of book 3 I think it’s significant that cloven!Esben says his name. Esben has had loads of time with Kalmar where he could have addressed his son and told him who he was. But he isn’t able to speak until he sees Janner. And at this point Esben is dying. He could have said any of his kid’s names and Janner would have known who he was, he could have said Kalmar’s, he’s spent more time with Kal at this point, but he calls out to Janner specifically. And Janner hears him and responds.
The last and biggest moment this happens in is in book 4 when they’re fighting Gnag. Janner can hear and sense Gnag’s thoughts and he can also hear the truth about who Gnag is. And he connects the two. He is the first person since Madia Wingfeather to tell Davion his name. The other kids and Oskar jump on board here pretty quick so it’s easy to miss, but Janner was the one who told Gnag, point blank “this isn’t what you want, and this is your name” and spoke that name.
So yeah, Janner has the unique ability to give a person what they need to remember who they are at any given time. He awakens something in them that they’ve lost. He’s a catalyst for memory and change, for healing. And that’s pretty amazing, I think.
#forgive me for my nonsense addition but OW#seriously the STORYTELLING of wingerfeather - i will never be okay with how cohesive and GOOD it is#how funny it is and how it kind of uses that humour ti make us cry in unexpected ways.....#and how the book subtly tells us the power of not just stories but art and music as well#and gives some of the kindest philosophies about identity and what it means to be yourself even if you feel like you've ruined yourself#(mentally and physically)#anyway yeah just this all this#yall i am unwell about this meta and all the symbolism#all of both ops' metas though culminate right at the end when he mass reminds everyone who they are#and rephrases the chant that once brought a curse#im begging anyone if youre reading my tags and like middle grade fiction with one of the best plots and characters and casual worldbuilding#and you also like funky humour balanced against pretty intense themes#AND you like respect for the arts as ways to remind people who they are (and also sacrificial idiot protags)#the wingfeather saga#it'll destroy you#(oh i think an animated series adaptation of it has just started too)#tws#fandom spamdom#amazing analyses#also never expect to see wingfeather metas here but im so glad i did#excuse me rambling in the tags#kinda got carried away....apologies#(ah right...a warning for some may be that it does have religious undertones but trust me...#...they aren't more overt than anyone with a worldview just writing from that perspective and kind of add to the enjoyment of the tale)

WIP Questionnaire
Thank you @tildeathiwillwrite for the tag! (From 2 weeks ago lol but anyways)
I'm answering these for The Flames of Revolution!
1. What’s the first part of your WIP that you created?
Technically this is the prequel to my Days of Resistance series, so I came up with a lot of the world and character stuff before I started this book specifically. Most of the first stuff I created was just bits and pieces of Caldren's backstory, mainly about him being an assassin, and a lot of the moments with him and Peg.
2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?
"Things We Lost in the Fire" by Bastille is one of the songs I really associate with this book in particular. Fire is a huge element to Caldren's character arc. Almost all the big turning points in his life involve flames, hence the name of the book. Both the lyrics and the vibe fit really well.
But if I was looking for a song for the series as a whole, I really like "War of Change" by Thousand Foot Crutch. It fits with both the outer conflict with the government and with the internal conflict of some of the characters.
3. What are your favorite characters that you made? Why?
Peg. I love Caldren to death, but Peg is my favorite little guy in all the world. He's so sweet and perfect and pure. I put him through so much trauma, but despite it all he just keeps going and holding onto his kind, sweet nature.
Caldren is so great too though. He's so, so stupid sometimes, but his character arc is great. He's also such an interesting mess of contradictions, and despite everything he's a great big bro.
Madreline is so hard-working and supportive. She takes no nonsense, but is still very sweet and compassionate. I really wish I could write her in more tbh.
I'm going to put in Scatterwag as an honorable mention because he's probably my favorite side character. He has some of the same vibes as Fagin from Oliver Twist or Long John Silver in Treasure Planet. Like, you know his morals are extremely messed up and he's probably committed absolute atrocities, but there's something so jolly and lovable about him that you can't help liking him.
4. What other pieces of media do you think your fanbase would share?
I'm honestly not sure. It's a really weird genre, hinting at historical fiction but definitely not actually that, but not quite fantasy either? I think that people who like it would also like things like the Hunger Games. It was also inspired a lot by The Wingfeather Saga, so I think that would also be something my fanbase might share.
5. What has been your biggest struggle with your WIP?
Training scenes. Caldren's whole thing is wanting to become stronger/more adept at fighting so he can get his revenge, but I am absolutely horrible at writing training scenes. There's like, at least three and I'm trying to figure out how to write them beyond "and then they taught him how to use a dagger" 😅.
6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!
I don't really have any specific animals in this book, although there's a pretty nice dog in other books of the series. In this book, Caldren does have a horse, but it's not super important. There's also a few mentions of the street dogs! They're these unwanted, abandoned dogs that wander the back streets of the big cities in packs, and will occasionally attack humans to try to get food. While they are legitimate threats, there's this whole thing about Peg relating to the street dogs because he knows how it feels to be cast out and considered monstrous and unlovable. Andreu tames one later in the series.
7. How do your characters travel/get around?
It's a time period before cars, so the main transportation is wagons, carriages, and horses. Carriages are usually for the wealthy, though. Caldren rides a horse between cities. Within the city, Caldren and Peg travel mainly by foot. They know the back streets and all the shortcuts really well. Caldren also ends up learning how to travel by rooftop.
8. What part of your WIP are you working on right now?
Filling in all the spots I skipped over when I did NaNoWriMo last year. I feel like I'm getting so close to being finished and then I realize there are whole chapters I skipped because I wasn't sure what exactly was going on in it. I guess it's technically still in the first draft but I feel like I've changed things and filled in so many plot holes that it's gotta be at least the third draft 😅
9. What aspects (tropes, maybe?) will you think draw your audience in?
One big thing is the found family with Caldren and Peg.
Besides that:
- Assassins
- Dystopian, but not super disturbing or graphic
- The fact that it's a Christian YA (?) book that not super annoying and cliche. (I hope 😅)
10. What are your hopes for your WIP?
Right now I just want to get the whole draft finished. My long-term hopes are to finish up the rest of the series, because this whole backstory prequel for Caldren isn't as meaningful if you don't have the context of the rest of the series.
Tagging! @late-to-the-fandom @agirlandherquill @themswritinwords @ryns-ramblings um and open tag!
Blank questions!
1. What’s the first part of your WIP that you created? 2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be? 3. What are your favorite characters that you made? Why? 4. What other pieces of media do you think your fanbase would share? 5. What has been your biggest struggle with your WIP? 6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them! 7. How do your characters travel/get around? 8. What part of your WIP are you working on right now? 9. What aspects (tropes, maybe?) will you think draw your audience in? 10. What are your hopes for your WIP?

The Wingfeather Saga spoiler-free review
Tumblr media
I became aware of Andrew Peterson when someone recommended one of his albums. I liked his music, and one of his songs that came up on Spotify was for Angel Studios' animated series based on the Wingfeather Saga books. It took me a while to figure out that he not only wrote the songs in the show, but is also the author of the books!
When I asked some readers, I was told that I should read the books before watching the show, so I started listening to them on Audible, where Peterson narrates them himself. The story starts out kind of playful (as the first two titles suggest), almost parodying the mythical fantasy genre to which it belongs, but becomes increasingly serious as it goes on. Though its main characters are only 9-13 years old, it deals with some of the biggest real-world philosophical questions and psychological struggles. It is Christian in the best way, acknowledging the reality of darkness and evil while still pointing toward light and love.
Today I finished listening to the book series. I was so enthralled, I did not want it to end! I'm not the kind of person who cries when I read or watch a story, but I gasped in both delight and horror at the different surprises (though I'm proud to say I correctly guessed the twist at the end of Book 1). I was laughing incredulously by the end, amazed by the brilliance of the resolution and the beauty of the entire saga.
I highly recommend these books for anyone who likes fantasy adventure stories. Now I'm eager to watch the show (whose main cast includes a singing Jodi Benson!) and look forward to spending more time with the Igiby family as future seasons come out!

[major s1e3 show spoilers!]
Sobbing after the episode today. I knew it was coming, and I even called her getting taken by the carriage, even the thing about the necklace but!!! Ouch!!!! Why???? Owe!!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two frames. Wtf. I can’t get over this scene it is making me so emotions.
Tumblr media
And a meme I made. To cope.
Slarb has such a good villain design, I love it sm. I love his character, the design, the voice, all the little quirks??
But the actual like?? Slarb? As a whole? Hate his guts. I talked abt how I want to bully him, okay. But that bullying I wish to partake in is now just. Desire to wring his stupid neck and/or kill him.
Anyways uh. At least Zouzab would never do me any harm!

uh...jeremy jordan...because jeremy jordan. (but actually it stemmed from a tts obsession)
and i'm just going to list my not as active but still very much obsessed obsessions just to prove that i am the well-rounded person my blog does not imply 💀
star wars (in general), but i adore sw rebels (it is better than clone wars fight me) and love the bad batch
lotr...but who doesn't love that (i have watched all 24hr+ of special features and commentaries though...)
how to train your dragon (my favorite animated series of all time!! yes, the tv series are included in this)
wingfeather saga, my favorite book series!!
tangled, my favorite disney movie <3
and then i'm always down to talk marvel, harry potter, broadway (i also adore laura osnes and corey cott), and probably more that i can't think of off the top of my head
Good ole JJ! And I love, love that you became a JJ fan via the dark lil crumble muffin on Tangled. That is a 10/10 journey for you, bless.
I have never seen any of the Star Wars animated series. 👀 but I like my SW in a "limited world" kind of setting, which is why I love the Mandalorian so much - I don't have to know all the lore, and the animated series seem very "We ARE the lore." (But in a very good way! Lore is great.)
LOTR, everyone's beloved. The HTTYD series were so fun! WINGFEATHER MY BELOVED I need to sit down sometime soon and see the season two premiere of the show! (Btw my cat Artham is meowing at me and walking over my laptop as I type this lol) Tangled, Tangled, Tangled, bless. Marvel, my original beloved and reason I joined tumblr lol. Harry Potter the series I experienced and appreciated as an adult. LAURA AND COREY my unproblematic faves, protect them.
Thank you for dropping by! You have excellent and I think well-rounded tastes. 👏

Interest check for a Wingfeather Saga discord server!
Would anyone be interested in joining/helping moderate a Wingfeather Saga server if I started one? It would be for both the books and the animated series, and have sections for art, theories, fanfiction, new episode discussion, etc.
If you think you'll be in the fandom for a while and would be interested in helping out, let me know! I can handle the more technical aspects of building a server, so mods would mostly be in charge of keeping an eye out that everyone is being respectful and following the rules. (And since this is the Wingfeather Saga fandom we're talking about, that shouldn't be a hard job. I love how kind and thoughtful this community is!) Name suggestions/ideas for the server would be welcome as well!
Like, reblog, or send a message if you'd be interested in joining!

taking part in athena's ask a thon! Has any other media inspired you?
Thanks for the ask!
Hmmmmmm, recently there's been two.
The first is the Kingkiler Chronicle: it's about a orphan bard kid named Kvothe who goes to a magical university to learn about what killed his family, and a big part of the story is truth being uncovered through children's playground rhymes and other folk songs nobody (important) pays any attention to. It inspired me to write some songs for Runaways, especially because music such a big part of the story already! Kvothe is a drama king it's very funny but otherwise not that similar to Runaways. Very good book though.
I've also been really obsessed with the Wingfeather Saga. I found it through the new animated TV show - it got crowdfunded and released for free(!) on the Angel app which is very cool, and I was watching it with my siblings when I was last home. They watch a lot of obnoxious kids shows but I really liked this one. The animation style is adorable and the story was good, but it left me on a plot twist and a cliffhanger so of course I had to go find the book series that it was adapted from. And it's genius.
The story follows the Igiby family as they try to survive under the rule of the evil Fangs of Dang, then go on the run once the Fangs start hunting them down (for plot reasons). The family is a pirate grandfather named Podo, their long suffering and strong mother Nia, the oldest bookish protector, Janner, the impulsive sporty middle child, Tink aka Kalmar, and the Too Pure For This Sinful World youngest musician, Leeli. Both Podo and Leeli are disabled but it's handled in a great way throughout the series. It subverts a lot of the usual fairytale tropes in brilliant ways without ever feeling jarring.
The story is told through Janner's POV mostly, and it is possibly the most relatable oldest sibling experience I've ever read. Please get this kid some hot chocolate and a nap ASAP please I love him. There's a lot of themes about "I am my brother's keeper" and music being the thing that connects the three kids and "remember who you are" with names. The tone is the perfect balance of sincere and heartwarming and terrifying and silly. I want people to feel like this when they're reading Runaways.

hey!! :D apologies if you've already talked about it somewhere and I'm just missing it, but I was just wondering if you've heard of The Wingfeather Saga TV series? the first episode premiered last night, and it's made by Angel Studios (they're the group that makes The Chosen, but I Know you already know that bc I definitely remember seeing you post stuff about being a fan of The Chosen before lol). I feel like you might really enjoy it, and I figured I'd let you know about it just in case you feel like giving it a peek!! :) it's free on youtube and all the usual places you can watch The Chosen now!
(the animation is really pretty and the worldbuilding is AWESOME; I'm in love with the backgrounds and scenery especially. it kind of has similar vibes to The Dragon Prince in some ways, I think? but the animation style is totally different and the guys making the show are trying to be really original and come up with a style that doesn't look too much like anywhere else's with this show)
Hahah okay this is so funny because I JUST watched the first episode tonight with my family 😂
It was fun! And cute! And I might end up reading the books now because I am intrigued by the story now 👀
