[book 1 + slight show s1e1 - s1e3 spoilers]
It Was Always The Plan.
It had to be believable, that’s what they told him. They worked the plan into his scrawny little frame, until he knew and believed in it with every fiber of his being.
It had to be believable, to the last detail, and so he was starved till the brink of death. He clutched his burning abdomen, staring with wide, wet eyes as they sealed the crate, and sent him to Skree.
It was always the plan.
That didn’t mean he wanted to do this anymore than Oskar. Knife in shaky fingers, Zouzab lunged for the throat.

This is based on a scene of Wingfeather Saga's animated sereis, in this moment, sometime after the 3 protagonists scaped from a feng (a kind of lizardman) Leele started singing near to the edge of the clift on dragon day and something fantastic start happening. For those who don't know, Wingfeather Saga is a christian book series and animated series with a Narnia/Lord of Rings style, i recommend you to whatch as soon as possible! WIP Questionnaire
Thank you @tildeathiwillwrite for the tag! (From 2 weeks ago lol but anyways)
I'm answering these for The Flames of Revolution!
1. What’s the first part of your WIP that you created?
Technically this is the prequel to my Days of Resistance series, so I came up with a lot of the world and character stuff before I started this book specifically. Most of the first stuff I created was just bits and pieces of Caldren's backstory, mainly about him being an assassin, and a lot of the moments with him and Peg.
2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?
"Things We Lost in the Fire" by Bastille is one of the songs I really associate with this book in particular. Fire is a huge element to Caldren's character arc. Almost all the big turning points in his life involve flames, hence the name of the book. Both the lyrics and the vibe fit really well.
But if I was looking for a song for the series as a whole, I really like "War of Change" by Thousand Foot Crutch. It fits with both the outer conflict with the government and with the internal conflict of some of the characters.
3. What are your favorite characters that you made? Why?
Peg. I love Caldren to death, but Peg is my favorite little guy in all the world. He's so sweet and perfect and pure. I put him through so much trauma, but despite it all he just keeps going and holding onto his kind, sweet nature.
Caldren is so great too though. He's so, so stupid sometimes, but his character arc is great. He's also such an interesting mess of contradictions, and despite everything he's a great big bro.
Madreline is so hard-working and supportive. She takes no nonsense, but is still very sweet and compassionate. I really wish I could write her in more tbh.
I'm going to put in Scatterwag as an honorable mention because he's probably my favorite side character. He has some of the same vibes as Fagin from Oliver Twist or Long John Silver in Treasure Planet. Like, you know his morals are extremely messed up and he's probably committed absolute atrocities, but there's something so jolly and lovable about him that you can't help liking him.
4. What other pieces of media do you think your fanbase would share?
I'm honestly not sure. It's a really weird genre, hinting at historical fiction but definitely not actually that, but not quite fantasy either? I think that people who like it would also like things like the Hunger Games. It was also inspired a lot by The Wingfeather Saga, so I think that would also be something my fanbase might share.
5. What has been your biggest struggle with your WIP?
Training scenes. Caldren's whole thing is wanting to become stronger/more adept at fighting so he can get his revenge, but I am absolutely horrible at writing training scenes. There's like, at least three and I'm trying to figure out how to write them beyond "and then they taught him how to use a dagger" 😅.
6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!
I don't really have any specific animals in this book, although there's a pretty nice dog in other books of the series. In this book, Caldren does have a horse, but it's not super important. There's also a few mentions of the street dogs! They're these unwanted, abandoned dogs that wander the back streets of the big cities in packs, and will occasionally attack humans to try to get food. While they are legitimate threats, there's this whole thing about Peg relating to the street dogs because he knows how it feels to be cast out and considered monstrous and unlovable. Andreu tames one later in the series.
7. How do your characters travel/get around?
It's a time period before cars, so the main transportation is wagons, carriages, and horses. Carriages are usually for the wealthy, though. Caldren rides a horse between cities. Within the city, Caldren and Peg travel mainly by foot. They know the back streets and all the shortcuts really well. Caldren also ends up learning how to travel by rooftop.
8. What part of your WIP are you working on right now?
Filling in all the spots I skipped over when I did NaNoWriMo last year. I feel like I'm getting so close to being finished and then I realize there are whole chapters I skipped because I wasn't sure what exactly was going on in it. I guess it's technically still in the first draft but I feel like I've changed things and filled in so many plot holes that it's gotta be at least the third draft 😅
9. What aspects (tropes, maybe?) will you think draw your audience in?
One big thing is the found family with Caldren and Peg.
Besides that:
- Assassins
- Dystopian, but not super disturbing or graphic
- The fact that it's a Christian YA (?) book that not super annoying and cliche. (I hope 😅)
10. What are your hopes for your WIP?
Right now I just want to get the whole draft finished. My long-term hopes are to finish up the rest of the series, because this whole backstory prequel for Caldren isn't as meaningful if you don't have the context of the rest of the series.
Tagging! @late-to-the-fandom @agirlandherquill @themswritinwords @ryns-ramblings um and open tag!
Blank questions!
1. What’s the first part of your WIP that you created? 2. If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be? 3. What are your favorite characters that you made? Why? 4. What other pieces of media do you think your fanbase would share? 5. What has been your biggest struggle with your WIP? 6. Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them! 7. How do your characters travel/get around? 8. What part of your WIP are you working on right now? 9. What aspects (tropes, maybe?) will you think draw your audience in? 10. What are your hopes for your WIP?

The Wingfeather Saga spoiler-free review
Tumblr media
I became aware of Andrew Peterson when someone recommended one of his albums. I liked his music, and one of his songs that came up on Spotify was for Angel Studios' animated series based on the Wingfeather Saga books. It took me a while to figure out that he not only wrote the songs in the show, but is also the author of the books!
When I asked some readers, I was told that I should read the books before watching the show, so I started listening to them on Audible, where Peterson narrates them himself. The story starts out kind of playful (as the first two titles suggest), almost parodying the mythical fantasy genre to which it belongs, but becomes increasingly serious as it goes on. Though its main characters are only 9-13 years old, it deals with some of the biggest real-world philosophical questions and psychological struggles. It is Christian in the best way, acknowledging the reality of darkness and evil while still pointing toward light and love.
Today I finished listening to the book series. I was so enthralled, I did not want it to end! I'm not the kind of person who cries when I read or watch a story, but I gasped in both delight and horror at the different surprises (though I'm proud to say I correctly guessed the twist at the end of Book 1). I was laughing incredulously by the end, amazed by the brilliance of the resolution and the beauty of the entire saga.
I highly recommend these books for anyone who likes fantasy adventure stories. Now I'm eager to watch the show (whose main cast includes a singing Jodi Benson!) and look forward to spending more time with the Igiby family as future seasons come out!

taking part in athena's ask a thon! Has any other media inspired you?
Thanks for the ask!
Hmmmmmm, recently there's been two.
The first is the Kingkiler Chronicle: it's about a orphan bard kid named Kvothe who goes to a magical university to learn about what killed his family, and a big part of the story is truth being uncovered through children's playground rhymes and other folk songs nobody (important) pays any attention to. It inspired me to write some songs for Runaways, especially because music such a big part of the story already! Kvothe is a drama king it's very funny but otherwise not that similar to Runaways. Very good book though.
I've also been really obsessed with the Wingfeather Saga. I found it through the new animated TV show - it got crowdfunded and released for free(!) on the Angel app which is very cool, and I was watching it with my siblings when I was last home. They watch a lot of obnoxious kids shows but I really liked this one. The animation style is adorable and the story was good, but it left me on a plot twist and a cliffhanger so of course I had to go find the book series that it was adapted from. And it's genius.
The story follows the Igiby family as they try to survive under the rule of the evil Fangs of Dang, then go on the run once the Fangs start hunting them down (for plot reasons). The family is a pirate grandfather named Podo, their long suffering and strong mother Nia, the oldest bookish protector, Janner, the impulsive sporty middle child, Tink aka Kalmar, and the Too Pure For This Sinful World youngest musician, Leeli. Both Podo and Leeli are disabled but it's handled in a great way throughout the series. It subverts a lot of the usual fairytale tropes in brilliant ways without ever feeling jarring.
The story is told through Janner's POV mostly, and it is possibly the most relatable oldest sibling experience I've ever read. Please get this kid some hot chocolate and a nap ASAP please I love him. There's a lot of themes about "I am my brother's keeper" and music being the thing that connects the three kids and "remember who you are" with names. The tone is the perfect balance of sincere and heartwarming and terrifying and silly. I want people to feel like this when they're reading Runaways.

Hello there! I have been a fan of the Wingfeather saga series for 3 years, (and the animated series since they where aired on YouTube) and I found your fanfics on Ao3 about a year and a half ago. I just wanted to tell you that I think you are an amazing writer, and a really great Wingfeather fan :)
One thing I was wondering, what exactly was it that made Artham your favorite character? For me, it probably would've been his dynamic. Or maybe the way he was written. I'm honestly not sure lol
Hi and first of all THANK YOU SO MUCH. I’m so happy to hear you like my stories and think I’m a good Wingfeather fan. Just, just trust me when I say that means a lot to me, I always feel like I'm not doing enough, so thank you <3
Okay so I’ve been ruminating on this question for a while, because it deserves a good answer and I love my boy a lot. (also I just really appreciated the nice comments and wanted to keep staring at the ask for a while) I am going to attempt to answer it tonight though!
So, first, Artham is just very much the kind of character I like. Tragic backstory? mentally ill? loyal to an absolute fault? loves children? kind? incredible fighter? He’s all of these things and many more and these are traits I love a lot in characters.
Second, Andrew writes him really, really well. He feels so human and so real, like he’s an actual person I could be friends with (and hug). His struggles remind me of my own- he gets better and then slides backwards, he tries so hard to help the people he cares about but doesn’t always know how to do that. He wants so badly to be with his family and to be loved but doesn’t feel worthy of any of that. I love, love, LOVE that he doesn’t lose his mental illness after his transformation. I was so scared that it was just gonna disappear in book three AND THEN IT DIDN’T and I was so happy, because that’s something that happens a lot with characters in media these days- their trauma/mental illness just magically disappears and that’s not how real life works! But Artham doesn’t have that happen even though magic is involved and I love that.
Related to that second point is that I find him both relatable and encouraging. I relate to his struggles with anxiety, depression, trying to cope with past mistakes, blaming myself for things I can’t control or fix… and I find it comforting that the books show that as Sara puts it, “even the noblest soul can be broken”. We are all broken, we have all made mistakes and fallen, even those of us with noble hearts and the best of intentions, and we can come out of that. We can go on living and still find love and kindness and support from people. It’s both solidarity and a reminder that there’s some good in the world, and it’s worth fighting for.
Idk, I just draw a lot of hope from Artham and what happened to him- which sounds silly because he’s a fictional character, but human beings often process real life experiences through stories so- I keep repeating this phrase to myself, it’s kind of become my mantra, “don’t give up before you get your wings”. Because, in book 2, Artham is ready to give up, he DOES give up, and it is at that very moment that he sees Tink and all of a sudden he has a reason to live again and he FIGHTS for it, and it turns out that he was meant to be there all along to save Tink AND to be transformed and have his mind restored. And I try to remember that because I’m going through a lot of crap and I feel like giving up a lot, but remembering that maybe I’m right where I need to be, maybe if I just keep holding on a little longer I’ll get my wings- that something good will come from this- and that helps.
So, uh, yeah. I could probably go on but I think that covers most of it.
TLDR: Artham is a character I love a lot because I relate to him and I love the kind of character he is (loyal, kind, brave, and somehow so, so soft despite everything). I’m drawing a lot of hope from this fictional character and his story. He is the best boy <3

💥- A big a opinion you have related to the Tangled movie/series?
We all know Cass is my gurl from now until forever! But I also love her smokin hot dad where she definitely got her looks from,Hector and her aunt Adira.😌
Nigel. He can go die in a hole for all I care.
Moonstone 1000%!!!! I have built SO MUCH lore around that opal.
Season 2. Gave us all a lot to work with when it comes to lore and it Twas sad that it Twas not touched on enough in the next season.
Probably HTTYD and the book series the Wingfeather saga. They are both heavily based on dragons so I’d put a WHOLE ASS BUNCH of Saponin lore in there.
I can’t pick one animal 😭😭😭. My number ones would have to be pascal, owl, little big guy,and Hector’s pets who I have named Raynan (rhino),Kinzey & Thanatos (bear cats)
Any next gen aus and anything involving the brotherhood!
Cassandra’s adventure suit and her armor in season two. And raps and Eugene’s outfits in season three. I also like the redesign outfits I’ve made for Cass and Andrew for my next gen au.
Probably Rapunzel’s coronation gown. It just doesn’t feel like her with the big poofy skirt. And Eugene’s outfit for rap’s coronation
I have WAAAAAAAYY too many 😭😭😭. Here are some of them: Hector has ADHD,Cass is near sighted and also has ADHD but she’s medicated (idk if they had that but let’s just say they do),varian and Edmund are both autistic,Stan and Cass are cousins (the cap being Stan’s uncle),Quirin is the oldest of the brotherhood,Edmund is the second oldest after him is Adira and Hector is the youngest. Hector is a Capricorn and is born on Christmas eve (is there a specific reason y I headcanon that? No) Hector and Eugene’s mom are half siblings,Cap had a wife when he adopted Cass but they got divorced, and then Cass’s “mom” died when Cass was 16. Willow has ADHD,and her and the Cap used to be a thing. I also headcanon that the Cap’s name is Caleb. Adira and Eugene’s mom used to date, earlier in high school. Hector stole his rhino from a circus that was passing through the DK,and he found the bear cats in the woods. Cass found Owl as a bb chick that fell out of his nest and was hurt and this happened not too long after her mom died so Owl just became her emotional support animal as well as her fighting bird. Andrew is dyslexic,oh and Quirin is color blind.
Idk ig Cass but I don’t like how they wrote it in the series. But my second would have to be Varian cuz ngl that would also make sense. But yet again I’m also interested with the moon!Eugene au.
I need to read more but so far Blood of my brother by AMax76✨😌✨
2018,when season one just ended. I did watch the short film when it came out but, then I just kinda forgot abt it😅. So yah I officially joined in 2018
Saw the teaser on Disney channel.
My top three should be, 1) ready as I’ll ever be 2)waiting in the wings 3)nothing left to lose
Through it all and living the dream.
At the beginning:raps. By the end? Cass,Eugene and Varian.
Fred.
Again I have too many😅. But I’ll try to keep this one shorter. IMO we should’ve had more lore on the DK and especially Saporia. I really would’ve liked to see them really dive into the motives of why they wanted to take Corona back. I also think that Ready as I’ll ever be should’ve gotten a reprise ont eh finale I stead of us getting through it all,cuz let’s be real that song was not it.

I've not read that series, can you tell me about the wingfeather series, as for making stats for creatures, a quick fix is taking their closest analogue from the monster manual :)
There is nothing I would love to do more than tell you about this book series!
It’s written by Andrew Peterson, who on top of being an author is a Christian musician which is how my parents found him.
There are four main books in the YA saga with the first one being ‘On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness’. The series follows the Igiby family, which is made of a grandfather (Podo), his daughter (Nia), her three children (Janner, Tink, and Leeli), and a dog (Nugget). The overarching theme is about transformation and of course, defeating Gnag the Nameless and his evil Fangs of Dang. There is also an animated series, with one season out on Angel Studios.
(I have realised that this is gonna get long so, more under the cut)
There are some spin-off books, such as the Creaturepedia which is going to be enormously helpful in making a campaign setting because something Peterson has done extremely well is the world-building and various creatures. My personal favourite is the Toothy Cow.
Given that it’s written by a Christian author it’s creation story is One Man, One Woman but other than that and the characters ‘thanking the Maker’ it doesn’t really have all that much overbearing religion in it, at least in my opinion. The series also has heavy influence from Celtic cultures, especially in the third and fourth books. There are also some really great songs due to Peterson being a musician.
The reason I personally love these books so much is because while yes, there’s an Evil to be defeated it is mostly a tale about overcoming and learning to love yourself and the strengths you have. The youngest of the main characters, Leeli, has to walk with a crutch, but that doesn’t change anything about her and she’s never left out of anything because of it. Every main character, as well as some ancillary characters, is fully fleshed out and given wonderful arcs that lead to a satisfying conclusion. I can’t read any one of these books without crying at least once because of how well-written it is.
Lastly, the plot twist in the first book broke my brain apart when I read it for the first time but when re-reading as an adult I feel like one could put the pieces together before the characters in the book do. It’s still pretty amazing though.

1, 5, 6, 7, 12, 14, 21, 23, 26, 27, and 36! (this is a TON of questions so don’t feel pressured to answer all of them XD you can pick & choose if you’d like!)
Yayy I am so excited!!
Do you have freckles?
Teeny tiny bit, not really noticeable I don't think.
Do you sleep with a stuffed animal?
Yes! I have my favorite Lucy in bed next to me lately and it's nice because she's my special soft kitty from when I was a toddler :)
I am ALSO GETTING A STUFFED MISTPAW FOR MY BIRTHDAY! :D
Do you prefer drawing or writing?
I actually don't know! :0 Because I really really enjoy both! And I'm certainly so blessed to be able to express my feelings through both! I'd say it varies based on the time. Which is also nice because I can just switch back and forth between both whenever I don't have inspiration for one. It's so wonderful that God gives us multiple gifts, and lets us serve Him in such different ways! :'D I've been writing a quite a bit lately but I have been starting to think of some art ideas so perhaps I'll be drawing shortly!
What’s your ideal number of blankets to sleep with?
Two! One to cover myself with and one next to me in case I get cold. DEFINITELY NOT ZERO ZERO IS THE LEAST IDEAL NUMBER- I have so much trouble sleeping when it's hot because it feels weird to not cover myself with a blanket.
Who are five (or more) people you want to hug right now?
~ you of coursee <33 I love you friend :')
~ My irl friend who has been so wonderful to me, it's still hard to believe that I'm appreciated, y'know?
~ ahfhijkjh allll my friends really, aaahh I love my friendss :')
~ a person I've been wanting to be friends with for many years and still pray for and will forever pray for. I have faith that if it's in God's Plan someday we will meet again and someday we will be friends and someday we will hug.
~Jesus, definitely, my Lord and Shepherd and Savior and First Love. Being with Him forever in His Presence is the best and safest Place always and He's the One who Saved me and died for me and loves me most. <3
What’s your favorite color?
Mint green and/or teal! :D But really I actually find all colors beautiful, all the colors God painted His creation in are beautiful!
How was your day today?
Pretty good. :) Pretty tiring and I'm probably gonna nap soon lol. Tiring but also blessed and peaceful day, so I'm grateful for that! :')
Do you believe in aliens?
I just stick with the answer of... Only God really knows so knowing that only He knows is enough for me. Leaning not on my own understanding is the way to go with anything I don't know for sure.
What are some seemingly childish things you like?
A bunchh! :D Stuffed animals, playing with toys, a bunch of shows including Peep and the Big Wide World and Odd Squad, picture books (my mom and I both), I feel like probably a bunch of other stuff.
What’s your favorite book? Or just one you’ve read a few times?
My favorite favorite Book is forever the Bible. I mean, it's God's Word and I can talk to Him and hear from Him, and He's blessed me with such amazing incredible moments in Scripture with the Guidance of the Holy Spirit, and taught me so much, and I can literally read it forever and still be amazed with a new insight from the Holy Spirit each time even after reading a passage over and over because the Word is Living and God continues to teach us through it. Such a wonderful blessing indeed!! :'D
My favorite fiction book would be.. maybe Little Women, or The Vanderbeekers of of 141st street (by Karina Yan Glaser) it's suchh a sweet series :') Ooh, and the Wingfeather Saga! Still gotta finish reading but I'm enjoying those books so much!
Do you like your middle name?
Yes! I've actually had a very interesting and lovely conversation with my friend about name meanings, recently-ish, and we figured out interpretations of my middle + first name meanings that fit my life and come from a Christian perspective, so that was fun! :D
Eeeee thank you for sending an ask, my dear friend!! :D <3
