Social Media – JetBlue
JetBlue Airways Corporation, otherwise known as JetBlue is an American low-cost airline headquartered in New York City. JetBlue is the sixth-largest airline in the United States, and as of May 2018 serves 102 destinations in the U.S., Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and South America. This airline is dedicated to inspiring humanity and strives to make each experience pleasant and simple. However, they do recognize that things do not always go as planned, and therefore created a Customer Bill of Rights that will subject to the highest level of safety and security for both customers and crewmembers. Included in their Bill of Rights are compensation, cancellations, delays, accommodations, and overbookings. JetBlue has five values that shape their culture which are safety, caring, integrity, passion, and fun. These values influence the drive of crewmembers and the decisions that they make every day. Integrity is one of the airlines main values, and they embrace diversity thus being able to appreciate, respect, and value crewmembers’ points of view across the spectrum. In addition, Community Connection has an important role in the values of the airline. Through their volunteer program, they help crewmembers connect with meaningful opportunities to inspire something special and give back. In 2017 crewmembers logged 180,000 community service hours. JetBlue has been awarded for Best Airline, Top Customer Satisfaction, and Best Place to Work.
JetBlue has a large social media presence and is active on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. In today’s world it is essential for companies to be active on social media because for many people this is their main source of information daily. Airlines can leverage social media in ways such as brand building, revenue generation, promotion, and customer service. Social media is important to JetBlue because it allows them to communicate with their customers one on one, while also being able to reach a wider audience. JetBlue engages with all of their customers via social media whether it’s for something positive or negative. The airline’s manager of corporate communications and social media strategy shares “know what your brand stands for and make sure that the way you communicate with customers in social media is the same brand tone and brand promise that you communicate everywhere else.” I think that he makes a great point because it is important for a company’s branding to remain consistent on all platforms.
JetBlue’s marketing strategy has relied heavily on the web and social media, rather than TV and print advertisements. This airline uses Twitter as a customer service tool and replies to customers rapidly averaging at a 10-minute response time. On Twitter, JetBlue has 1.96 million followers. There are three teams that tweet from the JetBlue account: the marketing team, the corporate communications team, and the customer commitment team. I had one experience with JetBlue where they kept delaying my flight to the point where they ended up cancelling it with no explanation. Without hesitation, I went on Twitter and tweeted them asking what had happened and if I would be refunded. The company responded to me within minutes telling me to DM them with my flight information and they would look into it! I was shocked at how fast they got back to me. Anyways, the more important part of this incident was that my initial reaction was to jump on Twitter to figure out why my flight was cancelled, instead of calling them on the phone. I figured if I tweeted them publicly I would get a more personal and helpful response rather than through an automated email.
JetBlue has significant engagement on Facebook with 1,420,529 likes. The content posted on Facebook and Twitter by the airline are fairly similar promotions wise. The main difference is that JetBlue uses Twitter for customer service, while Facebook is used more for promotions and sharing content. JetBlue interacts with customers on the comment section of their Facebook posts by directly responding to people. They advertise various travel destinations and on-board amenities. Also, there are many events posted on their Facebook page that are hosted by JetBlue.
On Instagram JetBlue has 295k followers on their page which consist of daily posts. When comparing the airlines Instagram page to both Twitter and Facebook, I notice that they are less active on Instagram. JetBlue has not replied to any of their customers on Instagram. There bio includes a link to share any customer concerns as well as encourage followers to tag them in their JetBlue moments. What I love most about their Instagram page is that they repost photographs that other people have taken while flying JetBlue and the destinations they have traveled to. They also encourage followers to use the hashtags #DestinationFriday and #WingCrushWednesday for a chance to be featured weekly. In the past they have posted more promotional information, but in the recent months their posts have all been from customers. Instagram is meant for sharing photographs and I think that more people will want to fly JetBlue if they see all of the beautiful destinations that their customers are flying to.
Lastly, JetBlue has a social media presence on YouTube. The airlines channel has 24,809 subscribers and their most popular video has up to 2.3 million views. Their channel includes videos on flying experience, social responsibility, flight etiquette, and marketing initiatives. They also have videos of live entertainment at their hub in JFK where they hire musicians to keep customers entertained while waiting for their flight. Some videos on their channel are humorous and advertise their brand identity. These advertisements resonate with people across the country and therefore go viral because they are relatable. One of my favorite videos on JetBlue’s YouTube Channel is “Fly Babies” which was in honor of Mother’s Day. In the video the scene on the plane shows a flight attendant stating “Ladies and Gentlemen welcome aboard on a very special JetBlue flight, we all know when we are flying with babies and they cry on the plane it can be hard on all of us, this will be the very first flight where crying babies is a good thing. Every time a baby on this flight cries you will receive 25% off on your next JetBlue flight.” At the end of the video it says, “Next time, smile at a baby for crying out loud.” Moral of the story is that four babies cried and everyone on the flight ended up getting a free round-trip ticket, but the deeper message was that it was Mother’s Day and they turned a negative into a positive. How could one disagree with a campaign like this?
Overall JetBlue uses social media to promote and maintain their brand. They aim to keep their customers satisfied and always reply back to their concerns as soon as possible. What sets aside this airline from many others it that it has outstanding customer service and continues to remain active on all of their social media accounts daily. JetBlue also has their own app that allows customers to book flights, receive notifications, check-in to flights and obtain their boarding passes. Furthermore, they have a blog called BlueTales which talks about charitable events, new offerings, and current events within the company. One recommendation that I would have for JetBlue’s Instagram account is to share more posts daily and post three pictures from customers instead of one. I’m sure a lot of people are using their hashtag and it would be great to see more engagement. Also, the company should start replying to customers comments on Instagram… there aren’t that many comments! Another recommendation I have would be to post more campaign videos like “Fly Babies” on YouTube, because it was a wonderful video with a compelling message to all customers who fly JetBlue and it says a lot about their values.
