as we enter the start of a semester and the dreaded Hour of Making Friends us upon us... if ur ever at a loss for what to say in one of those weird social situations where you only vaguely-know people, one of my favorite questions to ask is "what is your favorite food crime." a food crime is like the food combination that you love that other people find revolting. press them to take it further than pineapple on pizza, that's rote. food crimes is a good topic that has many benefits as it turns out all people are degenerates and also it will give you some cool ideas to try out later in the privacy of your own degenerate kitchen
the other good thing to ask is "okay but has anyone here ever been someplace haunted" bc it turns out if you ask most people directly they don't believe in ghosts, but many people are like "oh yeah i lived in a haunted house. ghosts aren't real tho"
#my food crime is that i regularly make a “pasta and tuna” situation that has somehow gotten even more evil and degenerate over time.#it is a ''white wine reduction'' (it's just white wine and garlic powder & seasoning)#and tuna from a can.#and plain pasta.#if i have the spoons i will actually chop garlic for it but this tends to be my comfort food for a REALLY bad day#bc its super easy to make:#boil pasta. drain. put into bowl for later. into same pot u used for pasta.#put tuna (with oil/water from can). let fry a little for like 2-3 min. put in whatever amount of wine. season to taste.#the tuna will get a little crisp on it which is nice. important side note:#this began as a Bolognese sauce.#and one day i had to sub for tuna. i know. not ideal. i cried about it too.#somehow over time it is now its own little evil thing. i would never make someone else eat it. it is beautiful.#but yeah i don't even stir the pasta in afterwards i just slap pasta into serving bowl#slap this ''''''sauce'''''''' on top#molto bene#(i really can cook fairly well btw. this is a food crime. not a suggestion of skill or ability)#(i LOVE baking but when i cook for myself. the autism is obvious. bc i just don't understand the point of most of the steps)#(.... i can just eat the deli meat out of the bag. it is protein. i don't even have to like it. i just have to eat enough calories.)#(also i used to cook MUCH more before this apartment which is so small that i can stretch my arms out and overreach the counter length.)#(.... i'm 5.2. so.)

A couple of weeks ago, I said that I was gonna try to make beef wellington. I made it today, and it came out great. I've never made this before. It's a rather difficult dish, but somehow, miraculously, I did it!!! It's sooooooo good. The pastry was light and crispy, the mushroom duxelle was rich with deep flavors, the Serrano ham that I used was delicious, and the beef was cooked to perfection. The red wine reduction was spectacular. I am very, very very, very, very proud of myself and very, very, very full. As you can see from the photo above, Petey was very excited about the wellington, too. Another dish from Hell's Kitchen that I nailed. I'm very thankful to Chef Gordon Ramsay and his show, Hell's Kitchen, for inspiring me to try to cook the food they cook on the show. I have expanded my horizons and my waistline. Hahaha 😆. I need a nap. That took a lot of work, but it was well worth it. In the words of Julia Child, bon Appétit!!! 😊😍😋😋😋

you know i wonder where the essay is, i certainly don't have it prepared, what it reflects about society, that the '99 trigun was a fun action western-sci-fi anime with a plot that wove itself out slowly and had plenty of heart that got serious eventually but was also a quirky romp through most of its run
and the '23 trigun stampede is a dystopian sci-fi set in a crumbling desert that can barely support life with a dark plot that drags you under immediately and also does have a lot of heart but ultimately appears to have the theme of scavenging that heart from a place that gives you no reason to believe it exists
like, as time capsules i feel like it's unintentionally saying something about us, about where we've come to and come from, that the same basic story is told in two such wildly different ways, after less than a quarter-century
#trigun#trigun stampede#i know that this is reductive but the tone of the two is just so *insanely* different that it's shocking#like the new version is gorgeous and i'm really liking it but you cannot view it from the lens of the og anime#they are essentially two entirely different anime#and yes i recognize that anime from japan is not tapped into the american zeitgeist but we live in such a globalized society now#that things seep through and things like the economy and constant streams of bad news and global wars affect all of us#do i think that it has something to do with the former american president specifically? of course not.#do i think that maybe it could reflect the growing global tide of fascism and authoritarianism and the helplessness that#many of the below-40 generation feel almost as a matter of course? perhaps.#that's something that absolutely is unfortunately transcending borders and cultures in a way that would take three sociologists#and a bar's worth of wine to describe#the same disease and sense of being abandoned or even betrayed by the people who were supposed to save you#and the deep desperate human urge to scrape together all our stupid little fragments of stupid little hope to keep us going#i haven't finished it yet so i can't say where it's taking this setting#but i find it very interesting how the two versions are so wildly divergent in tone and priorities

Dudes I remember asking my pediatric gastro if it was dangerous for me to drink alcohol bc I believed D.A.R.E and thought everyone in the slightest out of school interaction would pressure me into at least drinking to look cool, and he said he wouldn't tell me that because he didn't want to encourage underage drinking.
I wasn't asking for permission I was even looking for an excuse to turn alcohol down if asked but cool beans dude I guess I'll find out in the moment if alcohol will kill me with the meds I'm on or the conditions I have. A+ doctoring you're totes responsible adult
#harm reduction#my first drink at 19 I was so shaky bc I didn't know how it would affect me bc adults refused to tell me for fear it would encourage me#so I didn't have any frame of reference for whether this was a good idea or not#it wasn't peer pressure that got me to drink it was my then-friend feeling bummed that I was celebrating my birthday alone#and his girlfriend pitying me so much about it that she snuck us a bottle of wine#I was fine but if I hadn't been it was bc I wasn't properly informed of risks and such#and had I a bad reaction to it I would have gotten in trouble for it#Indiana had a harm reduction law in effect by the time I left. you won't be in trouble if you seek help in an emergency#but at the time I would have been arrested and sent to rehab for one drink celebrating my lonely birthday with friends who pitied me#it's so stupid

just had my dad admit to me that even though he's fully aware of how much his alcoholism hurts me and my mum and brother he refuses to quit drinking outright because he likes it. cool
