What does a regular weekend look like for princess and Lloyd? Are they the type to try out new restaurants that open up in town or are they more inclined to go to the mall and do some damage at the shops (me thinks Lloyd likes to spoil princess rotten so he doesn’t mind dropping any amount on her 🥰🥰) or maybe they’d do something romantic like get couples massages, etc 🥰🥰
On the weekend, Lloyd does like to hit the shops.
It’s obvious from the way he dresses that Lloyd Hansen is a bit of a clothes horse. Nothing pleases him more than a new shirt, pair of shoes, or piece of jewelry. He grew up in a rural area where there wasn’t much offered in the way of fashion, which is why he enjoys retail therapy so much nowadays. His favorite shops are Hart Schaffner & Marx, Tom Ford, Ralph Lauren, Balmain, Loro Piana, and Brunello Cucinelli.
What he really likes, though, is taking Princess along on his shopping excursions.
Lloyd’s initial plan was for the outing to be an indulgence for her, but he quickly realizes that’s not how she operates. Princess is the kind of person who window shops, thinks about her options, reconsiders, goes back and tries it again, and then if she still likes the item, she buys it. He thinks this is an insane way to shop. She informs him that this process ensures that she wears everything she owns, loves the clothing she actually buys, and rarely has to clean out her closet. Still horrified, Lloyd offers her the services of his professional organizer, at his expense. He has someone come in every couple of years and do a closet reset. They even handle the donations. Princess is shocked to discover that kind of service exists. Because it’s hard to persuade Princess to buy, shopping trips usually end up in the men’s stores.
Lloyd is charmed to realize that Princess has excellent taste in men’s fashion. She knows the difference between a New York and Chicago fit suit. Her eye for color helps pick the best tie and shirt combo. She also coordinates jewelry with the outfit’s color palette. Lloyd previously relied on fashion magazines to direct him on how to mix patterns and textures, but she does it naturally. He has to admit, he looks even better than when he takes her input.
Aside from clothing, the kind of shopping he loves most with Princess is jewelry shopping. Lloyd enjoys his rings, watches, tie clips, cufflinks, and even the odd necklace now and again. But the real reason jewelry shopping is his favorite is because of the store layout. You see, the men’s jewelry is located in the back, and the more popular women’s jewelry is kept at the front. Therefore it’s only natural that after walking in, you should stop by the display case at the front. Lloyd insists on it. He keeps a tally of what you’re drawn to, which cuts, color of gemstone, and metal tones. Jewelry isn’t something you buy for yourself very often. So, he makes it a point to give you these things, and he needs the data provided by these visits to choose well. He gets Princess jewelry on your anniversary, birthday, Christmas, Valentine’s day, and at least twice a year for no particular reason.
Lloyd is also a dedicated fitness junkie. Princess… isn’t. She’s willing to hit the gym on occasion, but it’s pretty much based on whether or not she feels like it. Lloyd prefers to exercise outdoors whenever possible. He usually jogs the Mount Vernon trail near his house. To accommodate their divergent interests, he rents Princess a bike. Lloyd jogs fast but with the advantage of wheels it’s easy for her to keep up.
Another thing they like to do on the weekends is go to Lloyd’s cabin. He likes having a place out of the city away from other people. It reminds him of where he lived growing up and he thrives on the peaceful isolation of the woods. Not having neighbors also gives the advantage of not needing to worry about how loud you were… Once that idea sinks in and you cut loose, Lloyd really wants to go to the cabin. Almost every weekend. Of course, you do other things at the cabin too, besides having sex marathons. You take short day hikes, go stargazing, and use the firepit to make s’mores.
Lloyd is a great cook. Princess isn’t.
To try and even up their skills they sign up for a Saturday evening cooking class. This gives Lloyd plenty of time to golf in the morning, hangout with his friends, and relax before they go. After the class, Princess can at least say she knows how to cook. When Lloyd goes on a business trip without her, she won’t be eating out every night. However, there’s clearly one person in their relationship who enjoys cooking, and whenever possible it’s him doing it. Princess happily does the dishes after Lloyd makes her dinner, because who wouldn’t be glad to be doing only half the chores they regularly had to? Plus, she’s eating better than she ever has in her life.
Cooking isn’t the only interest Lloyd brought back from Europe. He likes wine. One of his favorite spots is Tarara Vineyard in Leesburg. He likes the Jefferson Vineyard in Charlottesville and takes Princess on weekend trips to Rhode Island and upstate New York. He enjoys the wine tastings, while Princess is in it for the free gourmet lunch. Now, wine tastings are a bit rich for Princess’ blood. She mostly enjoys them because Lloyd’s commentary and reactions are so amusing. Her view on wine is less adventurous than his. She likes what she likes and that’s what she’d prefer, thank you very much.
What she does like are bookstores, record stores, and coffee shops. She has her own record player and a small but growing collection of vinyl records. Princess loves to visit art galleries and natural history museums, particularly the ones that have lots of fossils. Botanical gardens are high on her list. She goes to the D.C. gardens at least once a month to sit and relax. She’s gone to the Tudor Place gardens, which were established by Martha Washington, to the Meadowlark gardens, and visited the botanical gardens in Richmond.
For a simple low-key weekend at home, though, her perfect day would start with going to the farmer’s market with Lloyd. They buy fresh produce and have a picnic in the park, followed by a movie night. On other low-key weekends, Princess likes to be pampered. She enjoys going to the spa with Lloyd for couples massages, facials, and mani/pedis. Princess gets a body polish treatment and wax, while Lloyd has some minor laser resurfacing done.
He might only be forty-two, but prison ages you. Lloyd Hansen won’t be caught with premature fine lines and wrinkles, thank you very much!

State Street, Chicago (No. 2)
The Sullivan Center, formerly known as the Carson, Pirie, Scott and Company Building or Carson, Pirie, Scott and Company Store, is a commercial building at 1 South State Street at the corner of East Madison Street in Chicago. It was designed by Louis Sullivan for the retail firm Schlesinger & Mayer in 1899, and expanded by him and subsequently sold to H.G. Selfridge & Co. in 1904.  That firm occupied the structure for only a matter of weeks before it sold the building (the land under it was owned at the time by Marshall Field) to Otto Young, who then leased it to Carson Pirie Scott for $7,000 per month, which occupied the building for more than a century until 2006. Subsequent additions were completed by Daniel Burnham in 1906 and Holabird & Root in 1961.
The building has been used for retail purposes since 1899, and has been a Chicago Landmark since 1975. It is part of the Loop Retail Historic District.
The Sullivan Center was initially developed because of the Chicago Great Fire of 1871. In 1872, the partnership of Leopold Schlesinger and David Mayer began after their immigration from Bavaria. In 1881 Schlesinger and Mayer had moved their dry-goods store into the Bowen Building that was on the corner of State and Madison. In 1890, Schlesinger and Mayer hired Adler and Sullivan to prepare plans for the removal of the Bowen Building's attic story and the addition of two stories across the Bowen Building and the adjacent four-story structure to the south. The facades were added to match the bottom stories of the building and the building was painted white.
In 1892, Schlesinger and Mayer hired Adler and Sullivan to do further remodeling and add a new entrance to the corner of State and Madison. In 1896, Sullivan, no longer working with Adler, was asked back by Schlesinger and Mayer to redesign the façade and add two stories to the newly leased four-story building on Wabash avenue, as well as connecting it to the State Street store. That never happened because Schlesinger and Mayer changed their minds to make it a ten-story building, which also never happened. It eventually got painted white and then a bridge was added that connected the second story of the building to the elevated railroad. In 1898, Schlesinger and Mayer decided to remove the original building located on State and Madison replace it with a new building designed by Sullivan. Sullivan had both a nine and twelve-story proposal made up for this new building. They eventually started with a nine-story portion of the building that was made on the Madison Street side next to the original portion of the Adler and Sullivan renovations.
In 1902 Schlesinger and Mayer came back to Sullivan wanting a twenty-story building on State and Madison, eventually settling for the final twelve stories. The Madison Street portion that was added earlier did not structurally support twelve stories so it was left as is. Sullivan came up with a three-stage plan to finish the new building and allow Schlesinger and Mayer to keep their business running during the Christmas season.
The building is remarkable for its steel-framed structure, which allowed a dramatic increase in window area created by bay-wide windows, which in turn allowed for the greatest amount of daylight into the building interiors. This steel framed structure uses the post-and-lintel technique to provide a strong, light, and fireproof steel skeleton. The exterior of the building consists of a grid of piers and spandrels that reveals the post-and-lintel technique that supports the building. The design was the first use of what became known as the Chicago window. At street level, the broad expanses of glass allowed for larger displays of merchandise to outside pedestrian traffic creating the idea of the sidewalk showcase. In between the windows were bands of terra cotta, replacing an earlier plan for white Georgia marble, to save cost and weight and to avoid delays arising from a stonecutter's strike. The design featured bronze-plated cast-iron ornamental work above the rounded tower. The project also included a fire suppression sprinkler system, supplied from a 40-foot (12 m) water tower on the roof.
Sullivan designed the corner entry to be seen from both State and Madison. The attractive ornamentation above the entrance would give the store an elegant and unique persona important to the building's competition with neighboring stores. The building is one of the classic structures of the Chicago school. The way this technique was used on the lower floors of the building was so elaborate that it used the natural lighting and shadows to seem almost as if it were magically floating above the ground. The top floor of the 1899 and 1904 sections of the building were recessed to create a narrow loggia topped by an intricately detailed cornice that projected beyond the facade of the building.  This was removed around 1948 and the 12th floor redesigned to replicate the lower floors.
In the early years of development there was an addition that grew to be very valuable in spotting the building from afar. This addition was the pedestrian bridge that connected the train station, behind the store on Wabash Avenue, to the second floor of the Sullivan Center. This too was coated in elaborate metalwork and provided a sense of special entry to those who used it.
In February 2006, the first phase of a multi-year restoration of the building's upper facade was completed.  In addition to cleaning, the cornice and supporting columns were recreated on the 12th floor.  A 2001 report put the budget at $68.9 million for this renovation.
In August 2006 the parent company of Carson Pirie Scott, (Bon-Ton Stores Inc.), announced that after the 2006 Christmas season, the department store in the building would close.  There were no immediate announcements as to what would occupy the building after the store's closure. After holding clearance sales, Carson's closed in February 2007.
The 943,944-square-foot (87,695.3 m2) three-building complex, now renamed the Sullivan Center, is currently owned by Madison Capital, a private real estate company based in New York, New York.
In 2008, a second renovation project of the decorative iron work on the lower three floors began.  This included the State Street facade as well as rear portions of the building which face Wabash Avenue.  Part of the funding for this renovation was provided by the City of Chicago.  The Wabash facade was completed in August 2009 and the work on State Street in late 2010.
Tenants of the Sullivan Center include the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Gensler.  In December 2010, Freed and Associates announced it was in talks with retailer Target, who expressed an interest in occupying part of the structure. On February 15, 2011, the retailer announced it would lease 125,000 sq ft (11,600 m2) spread over two floors of the building. The new store opened July 26, 2012 and was met with favorable reviews for its clean design while being sensitive to the historic character of the structure.

Additionally they sell hardware supplies including hand tools, paint, landscaping products; plumbing supplies, home wares and a whole lot much more. A home improvement store generally has special departments which include products of a customer's attention such as fishing tools as well as supplies, hunting supplies, flower and nursery products, grind and ranch supplies such as animal food and pet as well as supplies. clutter
These departments occasionally also have swimming pool chemicals, house brewing supplies and canning supplies. The stores can often look after renovations and improvements via supplying everything you need for residence repair and maintenance tools for example hardware tools, electrical products and structural materials. The greatest customers of a home improvement store would be the Do-It-Yourself buyers. DIY is similar to building or repairing some thing, that is, without the help of experts or experts. DIY has become a great hit with diy stores in the past years but continues to be declining because people now often look for someone who can do which for them instead.

Home improvement stores are extremely common in the United States. In fact , a series of home improvement stores have been around for some time now. There are four top suppliers to home improvement retailers in the US. These are, Do It Greatest Corp. which is located in Fort Wayne, Indiana; Correct Value Company from Chicago, il Illinois. And the last you are Orgill which is a traditional at wholesale prices organization. Furthermore, there are still lots of home improvement stores that are still flourishing to survive the industry. These figures however , shows a drop compared to the past. Though it really is tough to compete with big chain stores, there are still diy stores that are still opening constantly. Moreover, chain stores possess continued their expansion. That drove the growth in marketplace sales.
According to research, product sales have been excellent from the earlier years up to the present. Although the sales growth had been slowed up because of the global financial crisis, it is not regarded as a decline. Companies be prepared to be back on track soon since the recession is almost over and done with. The has big competitors, where each and every one of them has large shares of the market. Furthermore, it is considered more of a motion than a retail sector. To prevent decline in sales, businesses have taken and considered a few ways to generate sales. A few stores nowadays allow companies to rent equipments, equipment and delivery trucks. Things prove to be effective as generally there had been an increase in sales in the market.

More than 100 arrests, 13 officers hurt amid Chicago looting | National News
More than 100 people were arrested Monday following a night of looting and unrest that left 13 officers injured and caused damage in the city’s upscale Magnificent Mile shopping district and other parts of the city, authorities said.
Police Superintendent David Brown said it “was not an organized protest” but instead “an incident of pure criminality” that began following the shooting of a person by police the previous day in the city’s Englewood neighborhood. At one point early Monday, shots were fired at police and officers returned fire. Brown said a heavy police presence is expected in the downtown area until further notice.
“This was straight up, felony criminal conduct,” said Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot. “This was an assault on our city.”
Those arrested were expected to face charges including looting, disorderly conduct, battery against police. Lightfoot said that the city has activated a neighborhood protection program that will be in place “for foreseeable days until we know our neighborhoods are safe.”
The unrest began shortly after midnight and anti-police graffiti was seen in the area of the Magnificent Mile, which is one of Chicago’s most-visited tourist attractions. Hours earlier, dozens of people had faced off with police after officers shot and wounded a person Sunday in the Englewood neighborhood, located about 10 miles (16 kilometers) away.
Brown said after a crowd dissipated following that shooting “we are monitoring social media and we come across a post of a caravan of cars being prompted to go to our downtown and loot.”
Along the Magnificent Mile, people were seen going in and out of stores carrying shopping bags full of merchandise as well as at a bank, the Chicago Tribune reported, and as the crowd grew vehicles dropped off more people in the area. On streets throughout the downtown area, empty cash drawers from stores were strewn about and ATMs were ripped open.
Stores miles from downtown were also ransacked, with parking lots littered with glass and items from inside the stores. Clothes hangers and boxes that once contained television sets and other electronics were seen — evidence that thieves had taken racks of clothes and removed them from the hangers.

How You Can Plan for a Safe Reopening
Tumblr media
Business owners everywhere–at least those fortunate enough to survive the shutdown–are looking for the safest way to get back to business.
Brick and mortar retailers that have remained open during the pandemic are keeping customers safe by taking precautions such as limiting the number of shoppers allowed in the store, designating aisles for one-way traffic and placing partitions between customers and workers. As other businesses prepare to reopen, most will seek ways to ensure the safety of another crucial group: their employees.
Monitoring Employees’ Health
Keeping sick workers at home is the first line of defense. At Chicago-based Tiesta Tea, which sells its tea both in grocery stores and online, managers take employees’ temperatures before they begin their shifts. Healthy employees are given cleaning supplies for sanitizing their individual work stations, which have been separated to give each employee more space. Workers wear gowns, gloves and masks throughout the day. Co-founders Patrick Tannous and Dan Klein told the staff early on that they should stay home if they have any reason to suspect they’ve contracted the virus–and that they’ll still be paid.
“People need to feel like they’re supported,” says Klein. “They need to know it’s okay to stay home, they’re going to get paid, and we’re going make do without them. The last thing anyone wants is people to feel pressure to come to work sick, because that’s when we’re going to have issues.”
Goodbye Doorknobs and Other Office Adjustments
Indow, a window manufacturer based in Portland, OR, has replaced doorknobs with hooks at its facility so workers can open doors with their forearms. The staff also placed colorful stickers next to often-touched areas such as light switches and buttons, to heighten awareness of those places; workers are each assigned shifts when they’re responsible for cleaning those surfaces.
Bigger companies have had to implement even more safety precautions. Amazon eliminated stand-up meetings, moved important information that would normally be delivered in person to bulletin boards, staggered break times, and spread out chairs in its break rooms.
OSHA Guidelines
While there is no company rulebook for a pandemic, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued several sets of recommendations for dealing with Covid-19 in recent weeks. Among them:
Discourage workers from using other workers’ phones, desks, offices, or other work tools and equipment;
Provide workers with tissues, no-touch trash cans, hand soap, alcohol-based hand rubs with at least 60 percent alcohol, disinfectants, and disposable towels to clean their work surfaces;
Install high-efficiency air filters and increase ventilation;
Have a plan for immediately isolating employees or customers who become sick in your workplace;
Create additional space for customers. For retailers, this might mean adding drive-throughs;
Replace face-to-face conversations–internally as well as those with customers, clients and vendors–with phone calls or other forms of communication as much as possible;
Establish alternating work days or extra shifts that reduce the total number of employees in a facility at a given time; and
Discontinue nonessential travel to locations with ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks.

Navy Blue Kitchen Renovation
  The reason I love my work so much is because I know the importance of creating a safe and welcoming place to live. I strongly believe our home is our own sanctuary and showcasing meaningful projects like the one we’re seeing today by Edward Deegan Architects and Interiors, makes what I do even more meaningful and I hope it brings hope to your heart and inspiration to your mind.
Here, the designers share more details about this beautiful project:
“This project presented a unique set of challenges for our team. The goal was to modernize and open up the kitchen and living spaces, add a first floor master suite, and make the entire first floor functional for our client who was diagnosed with ALS. All while meeting the client’s budget and personal style.
The completely open first floor allows generous room for circulation and the ability to see the entire space at once – which helps this client keep an eye on their young kids from anywhere in the space. With an addition to the back of the house, we were able to capture more square footage for the living & dining rooms. And not to mention add three wide glass doors, creating an almost seamless connection to the back yard and porch.
The client’s California-esque style worked well with the open first floor plan. The wood beams create some visual separation to each area, while also bringing some warmth to the overall aesthetic. The idea was to keep the spaces light and fresh with white walls, simple details and clean lines. But to bring in a little warmth and drama with the wood details and blue kitchen cabinets.
We worked closely with our client to create a master bathroom that would suit their future needs, which meant an ADA compliant vanity, sliding barn doors to a 5’ opening, automatic toilet and more. Though that didn’t mean we had to compromise aesthetic. The white tile, boarded walls and simple counter top create a subtle backdrop for a pop of color on the cabinets and warm wood tones in the mirrors and light fixtures – keeping the same feel as the rest of the first floor.”
  This young and strong couple created I AM ALS – a patient-led, patient-centric community that was created to offer more resources to ALS patients and their families. I highly encourage you to read more about this couple here.

As Chicago Stores Reopen, Group Helps Clean Up After Looting – WWD
https://pmcwwd.files.wordpress.com/2020/06/colinbphotography-1433.jpeg?w=640&h=415&crop=1
LOCAL SUPPORT: Chicago reopened retail stores Wednesday, even though stores across the city are boarded up due to widespread looting and damage.
One organization stepping up to restore the city is My Block, My Hood, My City. In the last 36 hours, the organization has received more than 100 applications from “mom-and-pop shops” throughout the city asking for their assistance, according to spokesman Ernesto Gonzalez.
“Rebuilding Chicago starts locally, with the block you live on,” Gonzalez said. “Our main focus is rebuilding the small businesses of the city. Those that can’t get bailed out and those where the insurance won’t cover most of the damages.”
Jahmal Cole founded My Block, My Hood, My City in 2016 to help underprivileged city youth. The organization shifted gears this year amid the coronavirus, extending its philanthropic arm to the city to distribute personal protective equipment and helping prepare small businesses, such as barber shops on the South and West Sides, for reopening.
Now their help is even more needed.
“With the looting that went on throughout the weekend, we are gathering data from small businesses to provide a volunteer force to help them clean up, assess the damage and provide micro grants to help them get back on their feet,” Gonzalez said.
The biggest cost for retailers is glass, from destroyed storefronts and windows, and insurance doesn’t cover everything, he noted.
“Merchandise is mostly covered,” he said. “But a lot of things, like glass and point-of-sale systems, are not covered. It depends on the insurance and it’s case by case.”
The organization mobilizes volunteers to work on the hardest-hit areas of the city. As of now, 4,000 volunteers have signed up.
“We’ve gotten a surge of working professionals who want to help with web site designs, accounting, legal help and carpenters that want to help rebuild the inside,” Gonzalez said.
My Block, My Hood, My City also sells a line of apparel, all emblazoned with its logo, featuring T-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, ties and hats. Twenty percent of each sale goes toward helping rebuild Chicago, Gonzalez said.

After George Floyd’s Death, Toll Rises in Protests Across the Country (NYT) Scores of American cities were on edge on Monday night as protesters faced off with the police for a seventh straight night since the death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police. Curfews were ordered in New York City and throughout the country in an effort to stem the toll of deaths, injuries and vandalism that have accompanied demonstrations that grew violent. The clashes have echoed in the streets of at least 140 cities, and at least five people had died as the country entered another long night. An untold number more, including protesters and police officers, have been injured. Thousands of people have been arrested and fires, looting and vandalism have caused millions of dollars in damage to buildings and businesses. Amid demonstrations from the beach communities of California to the park right outside the White House, President Trump warned on Monday that he would order the military into American cities if officials could not get their streets under control. The growing toll came as a curfew was set starting at 11 p.m. in New York City—only the latest of dozens of cities, including Los Angeles, Chicago and Minneapolis, to order people to stay home as clashes have escalated. Nearly 20,000 members of the National Guard have been called up in 23 states.
The tear-gassing of Lafayette Square has now caused a diplomatic rift with Australia (The Week) People in China, where reporting on even small anti-government protests is censored, are getting full coverage of U.S. protesters and journalists being beaten and gassed by U.S. police, blinded by rubber bullets, and arrested in what looks like war zones. “Freedom is dead” in the U.S., Chinese wrote on social media, BBC News reports. “The U.S. police has lost all humanity.” European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said “like the people of the United States, we are shocked and appalled by the death of George Floyd,” adding that Europeans “support the right to peaceful protest” and “call for a de-escalation of tensions.” Australians, meanwhile, watched a widely broadcast clip of 7NEWS reporter Amelia Brace and cameraman Tim Myers being clubbed, punched in the face, and battered by federal police clearing Lafayette Square of protesters so President Trump could walk to a church and hold up a Bible for the cameras. Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne expressed “strong concerns” about the assault on the Australian journalists. “We have asked the Australian embassy in Washington, D.C., to investigate this incident,” Payne said Tuesday. “I want to get further advice on how we would go about registering Australia’s strong concerns with the responsible local authorities in Washington,” suggesting a formal complaint will follow.
Brooms in hand, people patch up stores damaged in protests (AP) Carrying brooms, shovels, trash bags and cans of paint, thousands of people from Los Angeles to New York swept up glass from broken store windows, covered over graffiti and organized ransacked businesses Monday after protests over police killings of black people turned destructive once again. Bill Stuehler donned a mask Sunday and marched with a fellow nurse and other activists in Los Angeles, later trying to stop young people from breaking into stores and stealing. At home, he kept watching the violence on live feeds and fell deeper into despair. So before sunrise, the 66-year-old grabbed brooms, a rake and a trash shovel and drove to nearby Long Beach to clean up the mess. Soon, more than 2,000 people were working side by side, scrubbing, filling trash containers and repairing what they could in the hard-hit city south of Los Angeles. “It was pretty amazing to see the number of people turn out for the community,” Stuehler said. “It restored the faith in humanity that I had lost last night.” Throngs of people nationwide volunteered to help businesses—from small shops to major chains—bounce back from the damage, though some stores had burned to the ground and another night of unrest was expected.
Running into trouble: Eager pandemic exercisers rack up injuries (Washington Post) For people faced with more free time but fewer athletic options, overuse injuries are the painful flip side to the noble pursuit of “quarantoning” as getting toned during quarantine is known. Medical professionals and a footwear retailer on the receiving end of those distress calls say eager exercisers often overestimate how much of a new activity their musculoskeletal systems can handle. And they might do it again when they return to their gyms and studios after weeks or months away, expecting to be at the same level they were in March. Health-care professionals say they are seeing more injuries from bad home-office setups than from bad fitness forays, but physical therapists in particular say they are seeing both—and occasionally some creative person will combine the two. Kelly Roberts Lane, a physical therapist in Mahtomedi, Minn., said she is hearing from many office workers who wanted to take advantage of the unexpected downtime to get in shape but then went too hard too fast. “We’re going from sedentary at work to a ton of movement because we can,” Lane said, “and we’re just not conditioned for it yet.”
‘A national disgrace’: 40,600 deaths tied to U.S. nursing homes (USA Today) Over the last three months, more than 40,600 long-term care residents and workers have died of COVID-19—about 40% of the nation’s death toll attributed to the coronavirus, according to an analysis of state data gathered by USA TODAY. That number eclipses a count released Monday by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the federal government’s first attempt at a comprehensive tally. CMS said 25,923 residents had died, but its number only includes federally regulated nursing homes, not assisted living facilities. Even USA TODAY’s larger total—which amounts to roughly 450 COVID-19 elder care facility deaths per day—is an undercount. Seven states did not provide the number of deaths in long-term care. And New York, the state with the most resident deaths, doesn’t include those who had been transferred to hospitals in its count of long-term care fatalities.
Mexico begins lifting lockdown (NYT) Mexico on Monday lifted a 70-day coronavirus lockdown, but the federal and local governments replaced it with a contradictory patchwork of measures as the country struggled to contain the outbreak. The nation’s coronavirus czar, Hugo López-Gatell, took a hard line, saying that federal guidelines on opening businesses would barely budge. But several governors defied the federal government’s orders, allowing shops and hotels in their states to open at least partially.
U.K. and EU plan crunch talks (Foreign Policy) British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are headed for talks this month aimed at resolving post-Brexit trade negotiations between the two sides, the Financial Times reports. It comes as the deadline for the United Kingdom to request a two-year extension approaches at the end of June. Johnson has remained adamant that the U.K. must conclude a deal before Dec. 31, but trade negotiations have recently been bogged down—first because of coronavirus-related delays and now due to disagreements over fisheries and a common regulatory framework.

Poor countries, skyrocketing debt (NYT) The low interest rates of the past decade led to an unlikely alliance between poor countries and international investors. Governments, state-owned companies and other businesses were able to raise money relatively cheaply to finance their growth, while investors searching for better returns than they were getting at home gobbled up that debt. As a result, developing countries owe record amounts of money to investors, governments and others outside their borders: $2.1 trillion for countries ranked as “low income” and “lower-middle income” by the World Bank, including Afghanistan, Chad, Bolivia and Zimbabwe. Now, the pandemic is fraying that alliance. Economic activity has ground to a halt. Governments are on the hook for billions of dollars in interest and principal repayments—payments suddenly made more expensive by volatility in the currency markets at the same time that public health costs are skyrocketing. And their investors are not in a forgiving mood. “This is really unlike anything we have seen,” said Mitu Gulati, a law professor at Duke University who studies the debts of countries, or sovereign debt. “The last time we had this many countries likely to go under at the same time was in the 1980s.” In Latin America, that period was known as La Década Perdida—The Lost Decade.
Hong Kong leader calls out ‘double standards’ on national security, points to U.S. (Reuters) Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam accused foreign governments on Tuesday of “double standards” in their reaction to Beijing’s plans to impose national security laws on the city, pointing to anti-police brutality protests in the United States. In her first public appearance after Washington said it will remove Hong Kong’s preferential treatment in U.S. law in response to Beijing’s plans, Lam warned countries threatening actions against the city that they may hurt their own interests. “They are very concerned about their own national security, but on our national security...they look through tinted glasses,” Lam told a weekly news conference. “In the U.S., we see how the riots were being handled by the local governments, compared to the stance they adopted when almost the same riots happened in Hong Kong last year.”

With one of the highest coronavirus tallies in Asia, Singapore has said it will ease restrictions gradually, with the registry of marriages and some businesses, including pet salons, also reopening on Tuesday.
Ebola in Congo (NYT) Congo’s health minister confirmed the discovery of a new Ebola case in the country’s Équateur province, which last saw an outbreak of the highly deadly virus in 2018, ultimately killing 33 people there. The new outbreak in Équateur would be Congo’s 11th since the virus was first identified in 1976. Experimental vaccines have proved effective in preventing the spread of Ebola, but no cure has been found.
