Claymore backstory headcanons
(Yagi has set up a compelling world and cast of characters in Claymore, but so many of them have unknown histories, so that leaves a lot of room for interpretation. I thought I try fleshing out some of my favorite characters with my own takes.)
Miria: She was the daughter of the most talented tracker and scout in their village. Her father would coordinate search parties and patrols, working well within groups. She learned about leadership from him and greatly admired him. In her warrior days, she strives to follow her father's example. One day her father returned as the only survivor of his search party from a yoma attack. A smart girl who knows him well, Miria caught on to his suspicious behavior and realized he must be a yoma in disguise himself. She'd refuse his orders to come home or stay home. As a child she enjoyed racing other children for fun, often coming out as the winner. From those races she knew the village like the back of her hand. She'd run around ducking into nooks and crannies beyond the yoma's sight and reach, sending him on a wild goose chase until the village had time to call in a warrior to kill him. The warrior's handler was so impressed by Miria's spirit and intelligence that he recruited her on the spot.
Galatea: Though born with a humble background of no distinguished class, she was famed for being the most beautiful girl in her village. She married a man and had a son in her late teens. Their happy life as a family was cut short when a yoma killed and took over her husband's body, and Galatea had to witness him devouring their son. Rafaela was the warrior who intervened and saved Galatea's life. Ermita, the man who found Galatea in exile from her village and would become her handler, is the only one in the organization who knows of her past life. She never speaks of her deceased spouse and son to anyone, preferring to keep memories of them locked deep in the back of her mind. Galatea joined the organization as the oldest among the trainees, though her maturity served her well as she quickly rose through the ranks to number 3. Despite herself, her strong maternal instinct and soft spot for children never went away. She sees Clare as a wild child who often needs a firm hold on the leash, and dotes on the orphans in Rabona.
Sophia: Born into a noble family as the only child of a powerful and wealthy lord. She was a sickly girl whom her father doted on. When she wasn't bedridden and sick, she enjoyed singing. She survived many bouts of life-threatening fever and a yoma attack that killed her father and decimated her estate. Fearing she was a yoma too, the surviving servants sold her to the organization and fetched a hefty sum for her noble status. Since warriors don't succumb to illness as humans do, and stinging from the servants' betrayal and the loss of her father and home, Sophia's inner strength manifested as extremely powerful physical strength that led to her high rank and moniker within Teresa's generation. Noble roots are behind her elegant demeanor and polite speech. Unlike her peers, she's great at exchanging pleasantries to put regular folks at ease while on the job. She can sweet talk her way to staying in nice inns at a discount, mostly because she loves a nice clean bed and hates sleeping outside in the dirt and cold like a vagrant. The one thing she enjoys while being on the road is singing and humming to herself. Underneath her lady-like aloofness is a persistent melancholy and the ultimate wish for a quick death in battle that would end her warrior life, so she can be reunited with her father. In the end, she got just that.
Noel: Born into a family of traveling performers, Noel can't sing to save her life, but her acrobatic talent and prowess was put to good use as she'd astound the audience with daring somersaults and jumps. She was the only girl amid four brothers, so verbal spars and rowdiness among them was commonplace. Her family was attacked by yoma on a path through the woods, on the way to their next performance at a nearby village. Noel ran as fast as she could to that village, leaving her the only survivor. As a warrior, she loves to put on a good show while slaying yoma, giving it a performer's spin. Sophia poking fun at her acrobatics is always a sore spot. Noel is secretly jealous of Sophia's talent for singing, though she smugly enjoys her rival's discomfort with the nomadic life she had known since birth. So used to having brothers and her family allowing free reign of her tomboyishness, Noel feels out of place surrounded by girls and women as a warrior. The power system of attaining ranks and numbers stirs her competitive streak. It's the only thing that gives her some sliver of purpose in what she believes is an otherwise bleak and pathetic existence. Deep down she misses her brothers and wants more than anything, even more than being a top warrior, to see them again. She ended up getting what she wanted.
Irene: Born as an orphan with no memory of any family. She scraped by stealing from vendors in the streets for food and clothes. A shrewd observer and gifted with tactical intelligence, she'd gauge her targets from afar and work together with other orphans on joint thieving operations. But outside this, she has zero people skills and has no idea how to go about socializing and making small talk. When Teresa's hit squad stormed the inn, Irene let Sophia handle the payment and apologies to the innkeeper. After Priscilla's awakening, Irene was perfectly content and good at living as a hermit with no civilization in sight.
Flora: Born to merchant parents who made a living of selling and arranging flowers. She got initiated into the family business at an early age, and found her talent in swiftly yet elegantly nicking off thorns and other undesirable parts of a flower with a small knife. She was always soft-spoken, though sharing her extensive knowledge of flowers would break the barrier of her shyness. When yoma invaded her village, they destroyed her family's establishment while slaughtering them. The sight of crushed flowers smothered in blood was seared into her mind like a hot brand, fueling her desire to later grow strong as a warrior so she can cut down the ugly stain of yoma in this world. Born and raised in the warmth of the southern region, she despises the cold because hardly anything colorful and beautiful grows there (which she hid very well during the mission in Pieta).

shadows of the mountains wq spoilers
...there's a quest in natlan where you have to reinforce a seal that was placed on the abyss and we find out there were two khaenri'ahn soldiers who went there to trap the abyss underneath...along with themselves...
in the end, you have to defeat them to grant them peace and one of the knights says this, before and after he's freed:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(There is a hint of respect toward someone remaining within...)
"Your orders have been carried out. You won't be disappointed."
... HELLO!? HE WAS FOLLOWING SOMEONE'S ORDERS? IS HE TALKING ABOUT DAINSLEIF OR ANFORTAS THIS IS VITAL
yes those are the black serpent knights HOWEVER one of the knights of the schwanenritter, ynghildr, who turned into a husk, also used the SAME model as the windcutter dude seen above so all knights probably wear the same armor and belong to the royal guard (i think the schwanenritter was simply a division led by anfortas. remember they mentioned in perinheri that there was an alberich who was the commander of half the knights.)
also. ONE OF ANFORTAS' RUIN GOLEMS IS LITERALLY RIGHT NEXT TO NATLAN 💀
Tumblr media
i don't think the knight meant irmin or dainsleif cause irmin was busy tearing up that veilussy and we actually know what dainsleif's last orders were: protect the people of khaenri'ah.
which is not what these knights were doing. they went to natlan to prevent the calamity from spreading, presumably on their superior's orders. anfortas.... ANFORTAS SPEAK TO ME I KNOW IT'S YOU

☤ ༄.° sienna's new weapon ━━━ ἀμείλικτος
Tenho algumas ideias."
༺═───────────────────────────═༻
material: bronze celestial

LoZ: Wild - BotW VS TotK Weaponry
I'm honestly a bit upset that they took out the Silverscale Spear (technically, it should've been called a bidant), Moonlight Scimitar, Serpentine Spear, Vicious Sickle, Demon Carver, & such. The Moonlight Scimitar & Silverscale Tridant were especially pretty.
Interestingly, Demon Carvers are a weapon pretty unique to BotW that might be inspired somewhat by feng huo lun or wind-and-fire wheels. Unlike Chakram, which are made to be thrown, feng huo lun are used in melee. However, feng huo lun do not possess handles the way that Demon Carvers do. Rather having a bar inside the rings that you're supposed to grip. However, realistically speaking, this weapon wouldn't really be very effective as niether were feng huo lun. It think that they'd be called Oni-hori Enkama (Demon-Carving Circular-Sickle, 鬼彫り円鎌). - As opposed to the canonical name of Oni Enba (鬼円刃, Ogre Circular-Blade) as not only does it seem more like a sickle weapon, but I just wanted to keep the kanji for "demon-carving" in there.
I also kinda wish that they traded the Golden Claymore for something like a Dadao (maybe with some inspiration from the Greek Kopis). Just something that would more resemble a large, 2-handed scimitar.
Maybe add things like Kodachi, Naginata, Kunai, & Zanbatō to the list of Sheikah/Yiga weapon sets, then maybe name the Eightfold Blade an Ansatsu Wakizashi (1-handed assassination sword) or Sheikatō (after the Ninjatō) & the Eightfold Longsword a Sorikaze Katana (2-handed windcutter sword). Also, they should've kept some of the aesthetic from the Windcleaver with the Eightfold Longsword. I loved the look of that sort of wavy groove in the middle that lit up & the holes. Like halves of 2 different blades fused together!
I mean... I suppose that the Gloom Spear is technically a Naginata now that I think about it, but still.
It'd also be really neat to have an Urumi or Razorchain Sword type of weapon too. Maybe add in some hand & a half swords.
Also cool to add would be a Dadao or whatever type of massive, two-handed sword it was that Koloktos used. Or a sword inspired by the Sword of Manjushri, a.k.a. an old Khagda Wisdom Sword.
Khopesh for the Gerudo would also be cool!
Another cool thing would've been cutlasses. Like, seriously, one of Hyrule's ancient princesses was an effing PIRATE QUEEN!! Why are there no cutlasses??
I mean, sure, you could probably call the Moonlight Scimitar a cutlass if you wanted to, but it's just not the same... ;_;
Also, the various types of Lai'o'manō for Lurelin weaponry! Like the most commonly known Lei'o'manō, a Palau Papanihomanō (sharktooth club) or a Pahoa'i'a'me Lei'o'manō (sharktooth spear) or Ku`eku`e Lima Lei'o'manō (sharktooth knuckles). And maybe some other stuff like an Ulimasao (paddle club used to end war & steer towards peace) or Nifo'oti (cane knife) or an Aufana (bow)!
It would've also been cool for the Zonai to have something like a Macuahuitl. Or wooden war club with obsidian razors down the sides.
---
Can we also talk about how interesting it is that the Gerudo are inspired by Egyptian/Middle Eastern cultures, yet their weapons are very powerful, but not durable? Because, this very much contrasts with how actual Middle Eastern weaponry were historically.
It suggests that the Gerudo don't really have access to very high-quality iron in the desert, so the advantage of their weapons comes in their design & forging method which, due to the curve of the blade, results in more cutting power. (Which itself is actually accurate to the Middle Eastern sword design of pattern welding.)
Contrast that with the Middle East having ready access to things like Damascus Steel, which is made from extremely high-quality iron, while also having wonderfully designed blades, thus making them both deadly & durable.
Which, when I look, the Yiga's weapons are more durable than the Gerudo's. This suggests that their weapons might be made of better stuff despite their main base being in the Gerudo Highlands & thus right next to the desert.
This implies that my theory that the Desert doesn't have very good forging material (instead having an abundance of high-quality jeweler's metals), but the Highlands do, might be correct.
Which would make the metal that the Yiga are working with, most likely, the Hyrule equivalent of Damascus steel.
However, at the same time, the Yiga's weapons aren't much more durable than the Gerudo's weapons. Which could mean that the Yiga aren't really very good blacksmiths & if the Gerudo got their hands on this steel, then it could increase the durability of their weapons by leaps & bounds.

A Future End
John stared at the Chaos Marine across from him, the Wolf having long gone gray and his strength has faded to the sands of time, but he still held Memorial and Windcutter as he prepared for his final dance against a foe he knew he was far too weak to fight on a even footing anymore.
"Why do you fight Mortal? You are far beyond the light of your Corpse Emperor, alone against the Sons of Primarchs, your aging body having weakened you to the point I feel like I can break you in two with one finger! And yet you still stand there with two blades held at the ready and a look of...peace in your eye?" The Chaos Marine speaks, only loud enough for John to hear him, John only giving a soft smile as he replies "I've long made my peace with my death, Fallen Angel, as long as my children are safe and my Clan is whole I am at peace with my decision to fight against you."
The Marine nods to himself before flicking the switch to activate his Chainaxe, his mind already filling with the Song of Slaughter as he bellows out "THEN I HAVE GIVEN THEE CURTESY ENOUGH, LET THE SONG OF BATTLE AND BLOOD BEGIN!" And the two charge each other...

Miranda: You must think me a fool for treasuring it so.... sfx: ka—h [shrinks in on herself]
Lenalee: Not at all. You must have some precious memories with it, right?
♦ 76
Miranda: You know how there are some people who just can't do anything right? Miranda: I'm one of those.... Miranda: When I was little, all my classmates left me in the dust. Miranda: They were all so much more capable than me. I couldn't keep up. Miranda: As an adult, nothing changed: I lost one job after another.
sfx: kokeh [Miranda tripping with an armful of dishes] sfx: gashah [dishes shattering on the floor]
Boss: You klutz! Boss: Don't bother coming in again.
Miranda: P-Please wait.
Boss: I didn't think you'd be such a good-for-nothing.
♦ 77
Miranda: No one has ever thanked me, you know. Miranda: Because I've never been helpful to anyone. Miranda: All I wanted was for someone to validate my existence with a single "Thank you".... Miranda: And that's when Miranda: I met this old grandfather clock the antique shop seemed to be throwing away....
Shop owner: No idea where the old owner picked that thing up. 2 Shop owner: It's a lovely old clock, but I can't get it to work. The key just won't turn. Shop owner: If you really doubt me, go on and give it a try yourself.
Miranda: A good-for-nothing clock, kicked to the curb. Miranda: I somehow felt as though I were looking at myself.
♦ 78
sfx: kachi kachi kachi kachi kachi [gears obediently turning over as she twists the key] sfx: GO-N [the clock tolls midnight]
Miranda: Eek!
sfx: go-n go-n [the clock continues to toll]
Shop owner: It's working! You got it to work! Shop owner: It wouldn't budge for anyone else!
sfx: go-n go-n [tolling]
Shop owner: You've got to take it!
Miranda: The clock that wouldn't work for anyone Miranda: tolled, and my heart resounded with it. Miranda: I felt as though it accepted me, useless as I am.

Lenalee: The Akuma withdrew?
Allen: Yes. Allen: It was quite strange. They were all fired up to kill me, then... Allen: Looked around a bit, but they were gone. Allen, side: That stings! Allen, side: Don't poke at it, Timcanpy!
Lenalee: Well, might've been for the best. Lenalee: Facing level 2s alone is still a bit much for you, Allen.
Allen, side: Stop that!
Lenalee: Your body isn't accustomed to your new gun-sword weapon, so you can't really use it for long, can you?
Allen: You're not wrong... I've been working on my stamina, though. sfx: mumumu [flexes]
Lenalee: You have gotten a little bigger, I think.
Allen: Really!? sfx: chirah [glance] Allen: So, Allen: what exactly are you doing, Miss Miranda?
sfx: kyuh kyuh kyuh [Miranda polishing the clock's glass] sfx: gatagatagata [Miranda trembling]
Lenalee: She's been like this since we explained Exorcists and the Akuma to her....
♦ 80
sfx: butsubutsu [muttering] Miranda: I really don't know anything... The town went strange all on its own.... Miranda: Why must they come after me, of all people...? Miranda: What did I do to deserve this...? Miranda: I've had enough! No more, no more! sfx: butsubutsubutsu [mumbling harder]
Allen: Oh dear.... sfx: bururu [brr]
Lenalee: Just like this, ever since.
Allen: M-Miss Miranda, sfx: soro [gingerly]
Miranda: There's... there's nothing I can do! Miranda: The two of you are very powerful, right!? Miranda: So you should save the town already!
Allen: We will. Allen: We are going to help. But to do that, we need your help, Miss Miranda. Allen: The strange thing happening to this town is connected to you somehow. Allen, side: Please. Allen: So please lend us a hand.
♦ 81
Allen: Let's get back to tomorrow together.
sfx: kochi kochi kochi [tick, tock, tick] sfx: KOCHIN [TOCK]
sfx: kusuh [Miranda stands bolt upright]
Allen: M-Miss Miranda?
sfx: suta suta [Miranda climbs into bed] sfx: bafuh [the covers come up on their own] sfx: go-n [the clock tolls]
Allen: You're going to sleep!?
sfx: gu— [snore]
Lenalee: This doesn't seem right.... Lenalee: Allen, look!!
♦ 82
Allen: W-What's happening!?
Lenalee: Could it be.... Lenalee: That clock...?
sfx: go-n go-n [tolling]
♦ 83
sfx: kyurururu [the clock's hands spin rapidly backward]
Allen: The hands are turning back!
sfx: rurururu [still spinning] sfx: zuzuzuzu [the clock sucks in all the mirage-like clock faces from the walls around]
Lenalee: Kyaa!
Allen: Hang on, Lenalee!
sfx: buwah [clock faces pour in through the door from outside]
Allen: !
sfx: bikuh [Lenalee being startled by Miranda's dive] sfx: gatsu gatsu [Allen stuffing his face at the pub] sfx: jii— [Miranda staring at Allen from behind Lenalee's chair]
Allen: It's sucking up today's time...?
sfx: zu zu zu zu zu [the clock inhaling the events of the day]
♦ 77
sfx: zu zu zu zu... [inhaling the last of it]
sfx: paaaah [sunshine suddenly beams in through the window]
Allen & Lenalee: !!
Allen: It's morning!!?
sfx: chun chun [birds singing outside] sfx: pata pata [Timcanpy flapping at their side] sfx: muku [Miranda sits bolt upright]
♦ 85
Miranda: Wait.... Miranda: When did I go to bed...?
Road: Wow, that was nuts.
Lero: Should you really be letting those Exorcists run free, Lady Road...?
Road: Sure, why not?
sfx: gichi gichi [Road's fingernails scraping along Pangu's exposed skull] sfx: gata gata [Pangu trembling]
Road: At least until they find that Innocence for us.

FOOTNOTES
Pangu is a Chinese creation god whose voice became the thunder after he died. My old Viz hard-copy translated this as "Punk Voice", one of the many bizarre "official" choices that motivated me to try my own hand at translation. [ ♠ ]
Sooo you know how the marshals are known to carry stashes of Innocence around and leave them with potential Accommodators? Like Cross did when he hid one in that rare plant for Krory? They drop off Innocence in likely-looking spots and move on before the Earl's forces catch up, but may not necessarily inform HQ that they've done so, perhaps because the lines of communication aren't sufficiently secure.
So, looking at the antique shop owner... Tiedoll, is that you??
The town didn't start rewinding until some time after Miranda bought the clock, so he could easily have moved on before it locked down. He has less facial hair here than he does when he officially meet him later on, but the hair, glasses, soft-frump outfit, and that right-hand-behind-head mannerism are all there, not even accounting for how Hoshino's art may have changed between this point and his formal introduction. I can't unsee it.
