Bunged-up Lungs

Sleeping sickness is a disease caused by Trypanosoma brucei parasites. Thanks to recent control efforts, there are fewer cases worldwide than there have been for 80 years. The World Health Organisation aims to make sleeping sickness the second eradicated human infectious disease by 2030. But to fix something, we have to understand it, and there are still sleeping sickness mysteries to unravel. Here, in false colours, we see lung tissue from a mouse (grey) infected with T. brucei (blue). Scientists showed for the first time that the parasite forms nests in the lungs, explaining why one in five people with sleeping sickness has a cough or difficulty breathing. T. brucei also dampens the immune system in the lungs, making people more vulnerable to other infections. These insights could help doctors to diagnose symptomless people who carry the parasite, which may help stop the spread of sleeping sickness and eliminate it sooner.

Jusqu'à l'année dernière, des moustiques tigres étaient régulièrement introduits à différents endroits de Belgique, par le biais du trafic routier, de l'importation de pneus d'occasion et du lucky bambous. Cependant, rien n'indiquait jusqu’à présent qu'ils avaient survécu à l'hiver. C’est la première fois que la surveillance démontre l'hivernage du moustique tigre en Belgique, ce qui marque une étape importante vers son établissement dans le pays.

  "Pendant la saison 2023, Sciensano et l’Institut de médecine tropical, à l’aide des citoyens, ont détecté des moustiques tigres (Aedes albopictus) à trois endroits différents en Belgique (Lebbeke, Wilrijk et une aire d’autoroute à Wanlin). L’année dernière, des moustiques tigres avaient déjà été détectés à deux de ces endroits, Lebbeke et Wilrijk, ce qui indique qu'ils ont survécu à l'hiver. Les notifications de ces moustiques tigres ont toutes deux été faites par des citoyens via le site web de surveillance des moustiques, soulignant, une fois de plus, l'importance de la participation des citoyens à la surveillance des moustiques tigres en Belgique. Afin de renforcer la participation des citoyens, Sciensano lance une application facile d’utilisation "Surveillancemoustiques", avec laquelle les citoyens pourront désormais soumettre plus facilement leurs photos de moustiques tigres, où qu'ils se trouvent."
