Friday, November 8: Soilwork, "Overload"
Figure Number Five was the first time Soilwork recorded an album knowing it would receive at least some consideration from international audiences, but while it continued their ongoing evolution from their more conventionally death metal beginnings, it also retained some of the wooliness (and amateurishness) that made their previous two records both endearing and a bit bushleague.  “Overload” captured this transition by both illustrating their growth as performers (particularly in Bjӧrn “Speed” Strid’s vocals) as well their ongoing efforts to learn how to write actual songs- there were plenty of hooks, and the riffs were robust and catchy, but there was a certain awkwardness in the arrangements that kept the track from having a clear throughline.  It was weird, but by the same token that strangeness made Soilwork stand out and gained them traction on the scene.  And “Overload” was one of those tunes that likewise distinguished itself with its unconventional approach, one that the band would soon outgrow in ways that mostly benefited them but also reflected a loss of innocence.

Soilwork, In Flames and Arch Enemy @ Alcatraz, Milan
Tumblr media
"Day one: No sun" was a funny thing to sing after you've spent the whole day in the rain!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I take very little pictures at concerts, because I've noticed that I need only a semi-decent photo of the whole stage to remember many details from the experience. Soilwork were great, I jumped wayyy too much for that early into the concert, thankfully made the right decision later to sit down in the back for the second half of In Flames's setlist. No offence to them, they were amazing (as were the pits that opened at almost every single song of theirs), but I'm not that big of a fan and my left leg needed some rest after I made a nasty false step during Death Diviner. 😅
Tumblr media
Arch Enemy though were somewhat of a rollercoaster. Two thirds into Deceiver, Deceiver the lights on the stage stopped suddenly - the audio was the same, so I initially thought that it was a choreography trick before the last chorus. But no, unfortunately - the audio and the lights in the back were working perfectly, just not the ones in the front. Luckily, the problem was resolved after some time, and the show was a blast! Upcoming single Liars And Thieves, My Apocalypse, Wra Eternal, Sunset Over The Empire; No Gods, No Masters - I was (don't say in flames, don't say in flames) as if on fire during every song. 🤣 One of the guys I travelled with ended up on the 3rd-4th row during the last songs and managed to catch a guitar pick, so 100000/100 experience overall (he's a fan of In Flames, and I'm super thankful that he gifted me his catch). 😃 Also, there were giant balloons with the iconic pentagram-based sign - I am a sucker for those, so more bonus points from me.

Friday, April 26: Soilwork, "The Flameout"
Natural Born Chaos was both a breakthrough turning point as well as an intermediate step for Soilwork: the combination of sharper and streamlined songwriting with Devin Townsend’s production positioned the band as a leading force in the next vanguard of Swedish melodic death metal, but in hindsight their fourth record was also an iterative move towards what they would ultimately become over the subsequent several records.  As such, something like The Flameout” was a bridge between two worlds- it was wild and wooly in a way that felt like a natural follow-up to A Predator’s Portrait, but there was also more space and atmosphere, like the guys were trying to create more ambience and texture beyond Bjӧrn “Speed” Strid’s not yet refined use of clean singing in sections.  Looking back over 20 years later, the track plays like the band was aiming towards something more progressive to overlay on top of the usual In Flames-isms, but weren’t entirely clear on what that something was. So “The Flameout” was all over the place, and on its own was a differentiating track for Soilwork in 2002, though in the end it was more of a rough draft of things to come.

Soilwork - Nous Sommes La Guerre
Nous sommes la guerre
Nous sommes le contraire
Nous sommes l'opposition
Nous attendons le porteur de lumière
I can feel the shadows enter, risin' from the earth
Now that everyone is giving me the widest berth
I have nightly visits, sentient absence watchin' me
Nurturin' the itch where other worlds are scratchin' me
When I heard the voices from below
Gently tellin' me where I should go
Speakin' demon tongues in stereo
Face the undetermined, let it show
Let it show
So could you hold my fire?
Would you arise and meet me where the sparks ignite?
Nothing's new
It's just a fear that something's comin' after you
It's the brimstone sparkling, touching me at parts unseen
Just a sharp reminder prodding at what could have been
Would you share my burden, help me lay this ghost to rest?
If you disagree then please pretend it's for the best
Every trial that we must undergo
Trapped between the current and the flow
Melodies above the hellish drone
Sound the unrefined and let it go
So could you hold my fire?
Would you arise and meet me where the sparks ignite?
Nothing's new
It's just a fear that something's comin' after you
Hold my fire
Would you arise and meet me where the sparks ignite?
Nothing's new
It's just a fear that something's comin' after you
Nous sommes la guerre
Nous sommes le contraire
Nous sommes l'opposition
Nous attendons le porteur de lumière
