the way spike was the one person to respect buffy and recognize her strength and capabilities even when they were enemies. even as he tried to kill her he recognized how strong and capable she was. unlike her friends who's respect towards her was conditional. from the get-go spike knew how powerful buffy was and appreciated that even as her enemy. he was the one character through the entire show who saw her as who she really was and gave her credit for it.
