Portrait of William Kamkwamba, “The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind”. 2009. After seeing the movie, I enjoyed telling my kids I photographed William in 2009, and also that I have a portrait with Chiwetei Ejiofor. Not that either of them remembers me but the movie is so inspiring, I didn’t mind name dropping for a few minutes. Every child, especially every African child should see that movie. The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind - a Netflix production
From a best seller book to a a children book, then a documentary and today a Netflix produced movie, the story of William Kamkwamba, a teenage boy who was living in the Northern part of Malawi and, after reading a book on energy at his school library, found a way of creating a windmill made out of bicycle parts, and thus producing electricity for his family home and his village, cannot stop inspiring the world… A story of curiosity, enquiry, hard work, resilience, believing in oneself and genius craft skills; an example for the youth around the world. The movie premieres today at the Sundance Film Festival before being released on Netflix on March 01. Nigerian-British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor directs the movie and plays William’s father. William Kamkwamba visited Jacaranda School a few years ago and spoke to our children. We can't wait for our students to see the movie!
Read The Guardian’s review of the movie here.
William Kamkwamba a depuis bien grandi.

A few years ago I read a list of ways to support the We Need Diverse Books movement and seized on one of the ideas — donating diverse books to a school library or classroom. For a while I was donating one book a month to each of my kids’ classrooms, but it fell off when I quit my full-time job to start up my micro press dream and our family budget was scaled way back. . But this year my youngest is starting fourth grade, and his teacher loves books the way that I love books, and also the Barnes & Noble #bookhaul is currently in effect. At 50% off, I *had* to buy Sal & Gabi Break the Universe even though I already have a copy, so sending it to his classroom was the perfect excuse! And while I was there, a young reader’s version of Malala won me over (I love the illustrations!), as did a young reader’s version of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. . Now, will I consider this three months of donations and restrain myself from donating again until November? Or will the recent knowledge that she hasn’t read the Moomins be too much to bear? (I know, the Moomins aren’t much in the way of diversity except being in translation. But that counts, right?) . . #weneeddiversebooks #supportyourlocalpublicschool #bookdonations #salandgabibreaktheuniverse #carloshernandez #rickriordanpresents #theboywhoharnessedthewind #williamkamkwamba #bryanmealer #malalayousafzai #malala #middlegradebooks https://www.instagram.com/p/B1tXfVxgUFf/?igshid=168pqfxwww2j8

#omeninoquedescobriuovento #williamkamkwamba #theboywhoharnessedthewind #dicadeleitura #dicadefilme #malawi #malaui #temcriançalendo #literatura #literaturainfantojuvenil https://www.instagram.com/p/Bvb34-YhjhT/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1axpzd0k7oowq

Existem histórias épicas a serem contadas no continente africano.

Look out for The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind, actor Chiwetel Ejiofor’s writer-directorial debut, on Netflix and in select cinemas in the UK and US. The film is based on the bestselling memoir of the same title written by @william.kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer and tells the true story of 13 year old William, played by @maxwell_simba, who saves his Malawian village from famine by building a wind turbine, having being inspired by a science book. Chiwetel plays William’s father. The movie has been very well received so far, with The Atlantic describing it as “a winner”. We will be watching this! October 17th is the #internationaldayfortheeradicationofpoverty, and we’d like to harness the occasion to express our gratitude to the millions of activists worldwide who are striving to break the cycle that traps too many in a daily struggle with hunger and lack of hope. ⠀ ⠀ These #HistoryHeroes may be educating folks out of poverty, raising public awareness about this pressing global issue, protesting against economic inequalities, advocating for the rights of the poor, speaking out for those without a voice, or seeking solutions to real problems, like William Kamkwamba. ⠀ ⠀ William was born in 1987 in Malawi. His family relied on the yield of their small farm to survive. #Malawi is one of the world's least developed countries. So when the 2001 maize harvest collapsed, a crippling famine brought its population to the brink of disaster. A drought in 2005 further exacerbated the food crisis. ⠀ ⠀ His family was forced to prioritize food over tuition, and William left school. Hungry for knowledge, he frequented the village library. He was drawn to books on #engineering and #electronics. A book called USING ENERGY became his primer. With it, he created a wind turbine out of bicycle parts and junk to power his family’s household appliances.⠀ ⠀ Two taller wind turbines followed, bringing electricity to his village. Then William built a solar-powered pump, providing his community with potable water—for the first time!⠀ ⠀ #WilliamKamkwamba was one of the lucky ones. A story in Malawi’s Daily Times caught the attention of @ted conference director Emeka Okafor who invited the young man to speak at #TEDGlobal 2007. His speech moved several venture capitalists to finance his secondary education. In 2014, he graduated from @dartmouthcollege with a degree in Environmental Studies, but only after the launch of his book, THE BOY WHO HARNESSED THE WIND, now a film directed by and starring @chiwetelejiofor__ .⠀ ⠀ According to #AmericanPressInstitute, activists are more likely to be successful in their professional and personal pursuits. It appears there’s a health-giving benefit to engaging with and aiding others.⠀ ⠀ What are you passionate about? How will you act? https://www.instagram.com/p/B30A1_wnYhk/?igshid=1r3djxz2xp629

“A boy in Malawi helps his village by building a wind turbine after reading about them in a library book.” Genius #ChiwetElejiofor such a g. First time director too. These are the stories that need to be championed. There’s so much more inspiring stories to tell beyond the common hood centric stories, under the hood, let’s champion them. Big up @netflix @britishfilminstitute . Better yet let’s remember the real life hero #WilliamKamkwamba 👑 (at Netflix) https://www.instagram.com/p/BufKUCaDpUE/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1u4v0qu14vjk1
