Today In History

Paul Revere Williams, internationally regarded architect, received the 38th NAACP Spingarn Medal on this date June 26, 1953 for his creative and attractive designs of modern dwellings and commercial structures.

Many of the buildings he helped design over his five-decade career are instantly recognizable to Angelenos today, from the grand residences of stars like Lucille Ball and Frank Sinatra to landmarks like the Beverly Hills Hotel and LAX’s spaceship-like Theme Building (part of a collaboration with noted LAX architects William Pereira, Charles Luckman and Welton Becket).

Pereira’s firm was tasked with designing an iconic new building across from the Lincoln Center. In 1963, Pereira revealed an elegant model of a 77-story pyramid, covered with a black facade. It was to serve both as a skyscraper and transmission tower, both functionally and visually communicating the purpose of the tower’s occupant. The ABC Headquarters did not proceed. The concept has received little attention, aside from the scale model participating in “Never Built New York,” an exhibition by the Queens Museum in 2017. According to the exhibition’s Gallery Guide, “Pereira adapted the idea in 1969 for the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco.”

Years ago I started out drawing snatcher in his more canon form before beginning to imply different features that stood out to me more and liked better to his design. I would say to start out with character references first. The rest I'm sure you can figure out later; What works and what doesn't. You're unique preferences if you will. It takes some time.

As for the rest I've been inspired by golden age classic cartoons artists like Don Bluth, Chuck Jones, Hanna Barbera, Tex Avery, Walter Lantz, Max Fleischer, Richard Williams, etc... Disney, Warner Bros, and a pinch of anime. So many cartoons to name them all... I also take inspiration from Batim, Cuphead, Skullgirls, Lackadaisy, -Artists like Shen (bluechair comics), Vivziepop, Gooseworx, Piti Yindee, Hailey lain, Kittensneeze, Pastra, Qwerts, spineapples, StarsTaco, Telepurte, BeautySnake, Corax, Pastel Flurry Delak, João Pereira, kekeflipnote, Kosperry, Meanbeanzone, ... and so many others.. enough to make your head spin and of course my mutuals uwu (also i will be looking at your blog this is a threat/j)

but yeah look for works that inspire you! That match your vibe and sorta dissolve and meld into it
