Illustrated Map of Pony Express Mail Route

William Henry Jackson, 1860.

The route began at St. Joseph, Missouri, on the Missouri River, and travelled westwards across Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Nevada before finally arriving at Sacramento in California. Any mail addressed to San Francisco would then be sent by steam ship down the Sacramento River.

The whole route took about 10 days and was carried out by relays of horse-mounted riders. It passed two landmarks I have already posted pictures of, i.e. Independence Rock and Devil's Gate.
