Maritime Cards

excerpt from Crossing the Rubicon: a Hidden History of Games, a 1982 work of popular history written (originally in Borlish as Y Rubicon Trasir: un Stoir Scos de Joy) by writer and stage performer Jonnovar Meyaunot. She became famous later in life as a humourist and sobot [radio] host of documentaries and quiz games.

…more common across the Northwestern Isles [Ireland, Britain, Borland], as well as Denmark and Willemy [~Lotharingia]; however, this particular style of deck actually originates in fifteenth-century Poland. The Maritime deck comprises fifty cards organised into five ensigns [suits] and three colours: these are gold, bucklers, staves, jewels and arrows (depicted below).

Many of the cards furthermore have conventional titles separate to their rank and ensign—for example, the deuce of staves is called the Duel, while the sept of jewels is known as the Stars. Over time the artwork on these cards has come to incorporate these thematic elements. In games where some cards trump the rest, the gold ensign typically takes this role, although some more modern games will use the aforementioned "named" cards in this way.

The use of a Maritime deck for divination mirrors many other sources of randomness, although the modern occult practices only date back to the early nineteenth century. They appear to have been popularised by Promethean clubs associated with the Deviance movement, and specifically the storied Winchester group.

Early records of the specific rules of card games using the Maritime deck are unfortunately thin on the ground. The first real description of a particular game appears in 1555 court records regarding the gambling debts of one Marc Levosclin…

Koning Willem I (leefde van 1772 tot 1843, koning van 1815 tot 1840)

Daar staat ie dan, de eerste koning van ons land. Nou ja, als je Lodewijk Napoleon niet mee telt tenminste. En dat deed Willem I ook liever niet. Hier staat een vorst, een vader des vaderlands, zo je wilt. De eerste koning uit het huis van Oranje-Nassau.

Willem, de zoon van de gevluchte stadhouder, ziet het rommelen in het rijk van Napoleon. Vanuit Engeland wacht hij af; misschien kunnen de Oranjes weer de macht grijpen in Nederland. En inderdaad, als Napoleon verslagen is, benaderen enkele vooraanstaande Nederlanders Willem met de vraag om koning te worden van Nederland.

Lang hoeft Willem daar niet over na te denken. Op 30 november landt Willem op het strand van Scheveningen, waar hij volgens de geschiedenisboekjes warm werd onthaald door een hele menigte. (Later bleek het merendeel van het publiek betaald te zijn.) In 1815 wordt Willem ingehuldigd als koning in de Nieuwe Kerk te Amsterdam, met een grondwet hem veel macht geeft.

Bij het congres van Wenen, waar Europa na de val van Napoleon verdeeld wordt, worden de Noordelijke en Zuidederlijke Nederlanden, zeg maar het huidige België en Nederland, samengevoegd. Willem krijgt een land waar hij kansen ziet: hij richt de Nederlandse bank op en investeert er zelf een deel van zijn vermogen. Hij zal dat landje wel eens uit het slijk trekken.

Koning Willem geeft opdracht tot het graven van kanalen en legt de eerste spoorlijn aan tussen Haarlem en Amsterdam. Als hij een idee krijgt, laat hij een koninklijk besluit uitvaardigen, waar ministers maar weinig tegen in konden brengen. Als een halve dictator schrijft Willem I zijn besluiten.

De samensmelting tussen de Noordelijke en Zuidelijke Nederlanden verloopt slecht. In 1930 breekt in Brussel de Belgische opstand uit. overigens naar aanleiding van een opera ter ere van zijn verjaardag. Willem laat troepen naar de zuidelijke Nederlanden sturen om het zooitje ongeregeld de kop in te drukken, maar ontvangt maar weinig steun van de ander landen. België roept zijn onafhankelijkheid uit, maar Willem weigert die te erkennen. Pas 9 jaar later erkent Willem België als een zelfstandig land.

In 1840 doet Willem afstand van de troon ten gunste van zijn zoon Willem II. Reden is de Belgische afscheiding, maar vooral omdat hij wil trouwen met haar hofdame, Henriëtte ďOultremont, die niet van adel is en bovendien Katholiek. Met zijn buik vol van Nederland verkast hij naar Berlijn, waar hij samen met Henriëtte bij zijn dochter gaat wonen.

Lang mag Willem er niet van genieten. In 1943 zakt hij in elkaar en overlijdt hij. Hij liet zijn zoon en de Nederlandse staat een voortuin na.
