Shout out Willem Dafoe, period.
Tumblr media
I was gonna add him as Norman in Spider-Man, Thomas in The Lighthouse and Vulko in Aquaman, but he ends up wanting to kill the MC in the first 2, and Arthur still has his father in Aquaman so it doesn't count. This is a wholesome post y’all.

Again, I really do appreciate that the show has let Sam Reid's Lestat occasionally be unhinged in the intentionally goofy kind of way. Cos yes Lestat in the books is cool and suave but he's also a silly little chaotic weirdo.

Yep, that's my brat prince. The silly billy. Possessed by Willem Dafoe, apparently.

Thoughts on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice *SPOILERS*
The Good:
The reveal that Astrid could see ghosts this whole time and that Jeremy was actually a ghost was genuinely really good - I didn't see it coming but in hindsight it was so obvious. The whole bit about him trying to trick Astrid into giving her life for his was so fun.
Michael Keaton was a treat to watch as usual - all the actors seemed to be having the times of their lives, especially him, Willem Dafoe and Monica Bellucci. I was actually laughing out loud at some of the scenes he was in and I appreciate that they used him sparingly. I also thought the gag of Willem Dafoe's character being a former actor who liked pretending to be a cop and his secretary kept fetching him coffees and feeding him his lines was genuinely funny.
I was on the fence about Astrid because from what I got from the promotional material she seemed pretty bratty and whiny, but I think her frustrations with Lydia and her life in general were generally fairly understandable and I think she and Winona Ryder had great chemistry. Also I want Astrid's wardrobe, that sweater-dress with the bike shorts and boots? An absolute serve.
It's cool that Tim Burton and Michael Keaton both insisted on building sets instead of relying on CGI to do everything, I think that one of the charming things about the first movie was the handmade feel of the sets and they managed to capture a lot of it in this one. I mean, they do use SOME CGI, especially where Beetlejuice is involved, but I think it's good they didn't just rely on greenscreens.
Banger soundtrack, as usual, thanks to Danny Elfman.
Killing off Charles and Delia was surprising but I thought it was handled in a good way. I thought the actor who played Charles had died or something and when I googled why he wasn't in the sequel I think they did the best they could with the character. Catherine O'Hara sort of held together the Lydia/Astrid subplot for me, especially when she says to Lydia, "What happened to the angsty goth girl who gave me so much trouble? I think you need to find her!" The Bad: - This movie really made me appreciate the Maitlands more. The whole thing with the first movie is that Adam and Barbara ground it and give it a sense of normalcy - they have random, sudden, unfair deaths and as the audience we're thrown into the confusing world and rules of the afterlife as much as they are. In this movie I feel like everyone is too busy trying to be different flavours of wacky to feel real, which is fine for people like Beetlejuice or Delores but the human characters didn't feel like that had substance like the Maitlands.
Am I the only one who felt like this film felt kind of like a character assassination of Lydia?? I love Winona Ryder to death (pun unintended), but I feel like all she did in this movie is make that pop-eyed shocked face and say exposition. I'm sorry but am I meant to believe that Lydia Deetz, the only person in the first movie who could communicate with Adam and Barbara, called Otho, Lydia and her dad out on their shit multiple times and had the balls to make a deal with Beetlejuice to save the former, would seriously let some creepy man pressgang her into marriage? Not to mention I can't remember a single line of dialogue from Lydia, she's kind of been demoted to just being a depressed goth mom and that's kind of it. Also I felt like the way she was using her power for a TV show felt OOC when she was the only one who opposed the haunted house idea in the original. (Also Winona Ryder's hair looked terrible in the movie, it made sense for teenaged Lydia to have those gel spikes but on a Lydia who's hit fifty they look ridiculous. Like what, did her fashion sense never evolve past age fifteen?)
There were WAY too many subplots. I genuinely really liked the subplot with Astrid and Jeremy, and I think Beetlejuice and his ex-wife had a lot of potential, but the end of the movie was like Tim Burton forgot to keep track of every subplot he had going on and wrapped them up really unsatisfyingly.
Monica Bellucci's character was WAY underused. Like. I absolutely loved her design and stuff but she was walking around the whole movie attacking random people we don't give a shit about, and then in the climax she just stands there and lets herself get eaten. (That staple-face look would make a fire Halloween costume though.) I feel like the subplot with Lydia's creepy boyfriend/producer should have been cut so she had more time to shine.
The dialogue. Some of it was fine but other times phrases showed up that are so obviously going to become dated in a couple of years, it sounded like adults trying way too hard to be edgy and relatable to Gen Z viewers, like when Astrid goes "the afterlife is so random!" or that one woman describing something as "non-triggering". I don't remember the dialogue in the first movie feeling so buzzword-heavy.
Beetlejuice felt less like a threat this time. In the first movie he's more of a clear-cut antagonist but this time he's very clearly on Lydia's side and even dispatches all the other bad guys, so I think some of his more sinister energy was lost here.
The ending was really dumb ngl. It feels like it's setting up for a third one but Tim Burton was like "lol not gonna happen" so I have no idea why he chose to ending it like that.

Marvel thoughts!!
I will never move on from Tony Stark, I have and will always love him. Without him the MCU will never be the same for me.
Tumblr media
I will always ship Ironstrange, it's too beautiful and just makes me super happy.
Tumblr media
I will continue to hold out hope for Lokius even though I know marvel is queerbaiting me.
Tumblr media
I adore Loki as a character and want all their queer rep to be realised on screen but for now at least it got mentioned I suppose and we did get Vote Loki which I appreciated.
Tumblr media
I will always be upset that my hot monster Gorr the God Butcher wasn't as sexy in the film as the comics and he just wasn't done justice.
Tumblr media
I will be thankful for the hot mess that is the Venom movies and it's awakening of my symbrock loving monster fucker heart.
Tumblr media
I'm still disappointed that they didn't do Carnage right, looked great but not enough murder and villainous behaviour and too much random romance subplot.
Tumblr media
I'm still super happy that Spiderman gave me the wonderful hot and sexy Willem Dafoe as the Green Goblin and then he was even hotter and badass in the most recent film!

Subjected myself to the Netflix Death Note movie for the first time, while I'm hyperfixating on the series again. Willem Dafoe voicing Ryuk is one of the only things I think I particularly care for. That doesn't mean I like DN'17 Ryuk (the Faustian bargain feels so weak when it feels like he's forcing it), just Dafoe voicing him. Similar feeling about L. I stan Lawliet, love LaKeith Stanfeild, doesn't mean i like the movie character. As for the rest:
-why is Sachiko fridged?
-where is Sayu?
-WTF is Soichiro's deal?
-what was wrong with heart attacks?
-why do they get rid of ppl touching the notebook seeing the shinigami?
-why is supposedly 4d level chess Light dumb enough to show Psuedo-Misa the notebook just because he's a lil thirsty?
-WTF is Psuedo-Misa's deal?
-Kira means literally none of the things Light says. Celtic is also not a language.
-the jingoism behind Light's international kills
-totally not surprised US LEO were big Kira fans from the jump
-what did the sex workers in the club slaughter scene do wrong, other than be sex workers?
-wtf is up with ninja L asking Watari to sing Wizard of Oz karaoke to him?
-the Raye Penber incident carries so much less weight
-fuck yea Phantasm
-I appreciate Light retaining some humanity, with the concern for his dad
-L's case feels so much weaker in this
-The OG rules were fun and compelling, the movie ones aren't
-emotional L crushes so much of my personal relation to the character
-i don't like ghost town Whammy's House. Assuming The Rochester in Rochester House means Rochester NY (judging from L reaching the NY field office), nothing even close exists. I grew up in the area and went in a lot of vacants. We would have found that.
-whats with the Bladerunner guns?
- L did NOT need to shove diner guy's face into his plate to parkour around
- L using a page? No.
-i hate it. I Hate It. I HATE IT.
About as seething as I expected, so can't exactly say disappointed. I'd rather rewatch DB Evolution, though. I assume all of these are very cold takes, but my body physically recoiled in reaction to exposure to this souless monstrosity. I know a lot of ppl hate on the '06 live action movies, but I'm so happy to be moving on to them.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice trailer thoughts
Tumblr media
First of all, if you haven’t seen the trailer, here it is. Now here are some of my thoughts on it.
One thing that stuck out to me right away is that some of the cinematography and dialogue (“I am gonna make you so happy”) make it feel like Beetlejuice still thinks he and Lydia are married, or at the very least engaged. Right off the bat I think this is a very funny dynamic, especially since Lydia actually is married (with a daughter no less!), and what’s probably her husband (Justin Theroux) is here too. I can already see Beetlejuice trying to engage in some schmaltzy romcom dialogue with his “wife,” while Lydia sternly rebukes “you tried to kill my father then groomed and manipulated me into marrying you when I was 15.” Then Beetlejuice says something along the lines of “haha, you’re so funny babes!” or “Good times, good times!” Meanwhile he banishes Lydia’s actual husband to the timeout corner the second he tries to intervene. Beetlejuice just being so completely delusional about the whole thing is a great direction to take him in.
Related, but Beetlejuice overall seems to be framed more empathetically/less like the overt villain he was in the original movie. Both the cartoon and the musical to this to some degree, so I’m not surprised they’re doing it here too. Going with my above interpretation of his dynamic with Lydia, I think this is the best case scenario rather than just randomly flipping his character on its head. My guess is he’s somewhere on the sliding scale of anti-hero to villain protagonist
Beetlejuice is definitely still out to marry Lydia, since we see shots of a wedding cake and Lydia in her iconic red dress. Both of these shots are located in a chapel.
As I’m sure everyone’s pointed out by now, Monica Bellucci’s character Delores is missing a finger. This is relevant because, when Beetlejuice pulls out the wedding ring in the first movie, it’s still attached to a disembodied finger. A common fan theory that’s been floating around for years is that Beetlejuice died via suicide after his wife left him. On top of all that, I’m like 90% sure that Bellucci’s character was literally listed as “Beetlejuice’s wife” on IMDb at some point.
I think Lydia’s daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) is gonna die fairly early on in the movie. Her makeup in several shots is very corpselike. I have a feeling that this will be the premise of the movie: Lydia intentionally lets out Beetlejuice to ask for help pulling her daughter out of the Netherworld.
That scene with Lydia and Astrid running away from a sand worm makes me think that maybe Lydia will die too, but it will be less permanent. Maybe she gets a “green card” in her marriage to Beetlejuice, too.
I have no idea what the fuck willem dafoe is doing here tbh
I’m torn on the effects. I appreciate they’re going for a different look and emulating the feel of the original, but they just look so….fake. It’s all clearly CG rather than clever stop motion, puppets, and costuming. The plane in particular looks really bad.
0/10 no Alex Brightman cameo

So I recently shared a clip show of Lord Cob, the villain from the Studio Ghibli movie, Tales from Earthsea, voiced by Willem in the English dub.
Well, I decided to share another clip show of this character, because I love this androgynous, ASMR whispering, freak (affectionate) of a sorcerer. Enjoy!

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice stars promise "big swing" surprises in the sequel, as Michael Keaton says it's got a "stronger story" than the original.
Tumblr media
Beetlejuice fans are expecting a lot from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, having waited a whopping 36 years for the Tim Burton-directed follow-up. Its cast, fortunately though, are feeling pretty chill about living up to the hype...
In the new issue of Total Film, which hits newsstands on Thursday, August 15, and features the eagerly anticipated sequel on the cover, Michael Keaton – who's back as the titular Ghost with the Most – claims the new film has "a stronger story" than its predecessor, and that "there's more of a connection for the audience in terms of the other characters."
He continues: "There's things in here that I wasn't ready for, that are beyond delightful. Instead of saying, 'I can't wait until this thing shows up,' or, 'I just want this thing called Beetlejuice to go nuts.'"
As it stands, there's very little that's been revealed in the way of plot regarding Beetlejuice 2, but we do know that Winona Ryder's returning character is now the host of a popular medium-based TV series called 'Ghost House with Lydia Deetz' – something her teen daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) loathes. That, and the death of Jeffrey Jones' Charles Deetz brings the family back to the location of the first flick, Winter River, Connecticut, and subsequently leads to the reawakening of Keaton's green-haired ghoul.
"I feel very confident that it will match and exceed expectations. It certainly did mine, and mine are way up there," Ryder says. "I literally think every generation can find something in it that they'll really appreciate."
Tumblr media
"This movie takes some very big swings," Justin Theroux, who plays Lydia's new fiancé Rory, nods, likening it to watching Willy Wonka’s psychedelic boat ride in the 1971 film. "There's the phantasmagoria and it feels slightly out of control and unhinged. It has that vibe to it. It's clear this movie was not made by taking polls from audiences, and studio notes, and executives going, 'Well, what's the most satisfying act three?' This is 100% like someone opening the front of Tim Burton's head, and letting it dump out onto the screen. It's a fabulous ride for exactly that reason."
Also starring Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, and Catherine O'Hara, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice releases on September 6. You can read more about it, and a whole lot more besides, in the new issue of Total Film when it hits shelves and digital newsstands on Thursday, August 15.
