we remembered the magic of our loose teeth, how we used to know how to talk to trees. we're taking god out of the church and prying worship from the dirt. making our lives about using the finer things, about just-trying. the leisurely enjoyment of laziness, lawlessness, of leaving the dishes undone. of enjoying food without apology, of showing off our naked body, of kissing her. call it hedonism, sure.

always knew something else about ourselves. spent our whole lives hushed up; told we're made wrong. that's fine, these days. we used to know how to cast spells on the clouds. we have always been a little bit of lightning. the moss will teach us the soft hand - here's how to belong.

“Why’s it called that anyway?” Tommy asks, looking to Buck for an answer, which of course, Buck has.

“The name actually comes from Aurora, the goddess of dawn, and the ancient Greek word for wind, but they were first named by Galileo, who was Italian, not Greek. Did you know he’s the father of modern science? Without all his discoveries, we wouldn’t have thermometers or magnifying telescopes or even physics, and then we might not have ever had airplanes or—” Buck cuts himself off mid-ramble. In the past, when he’s gone on these kinds of tangents, this is the point where people’s eyes start to wander or glaze over in boredom, “I’m sorry, this is probably really boring. I’ll stop,” He meets Tommy’s gaze, which he’s surprised to discover is still fixed firmly on him, the other man watching him intently as he listens, but a frown comes across his expression as Buck apologises.  

“Evan,” Tommy puts a hand on Buck’s arm and turns his head to face him, his expression serious but tender. Tommy looks right into his eyes, and it feels to Buck as though he sees right through him. Through the carefully constructed armour known to most as Buck and down to who he is at his core, Evan. Evan is someone that few people get to know these days, but Tommy sees him; Tommy has always seen him. “You don’t need to apologise for being yourself. You’re lovable just the way you are, and I love hearing your facts and hearing you talk so passionately. It’s pretty adorable, actually.”

It's been a month since the fire. It's been awkward. She didn’t want Marjan to ever leave, but she also didn’t want to overstep. Marjan was grieving the loss of her home, her identity, and her sense of safety. She pulls people out of burning buildings every day on the job but Nancy could tell it was different this time for Marjan. 

They shared a wall and she could hear everything. She woke up with every nightmare Marjan had. Nancy would sit up and contemplate going over to comfort her, but it wasn’t her place. They’re just roommates. Marjan agreed to live here because she needed somewhere to stay, not for any other reason, despite what Nancy may be feeling. She knew Marjan would never see her the same way, so she needed to get over her crush.

Well, hello again.

It's been a very busy month, and I have roughly nothing left in my head, but it's Wednesday okay, and that's finally aligning with a day I ended up driving home thinking I want to do a wip post okay. So first, thank you to everyone still commenting on Musical Chairs, and I'm sorry to anyone who's been hoping I can get the last chapter out in a timely manner. I can't, obviously, but as a sad offering in that chapter's stead, I have here An Ode to How Soundly Musical Chairs Is Kicking My Ass.

This is a multimedia presentation. In this essay I will-

I don't have a posting goal anymore. As soon as possible is a moving target. But I do have two deleted scenes, and here's one.

“Stupidity has no bearing on whether or not I hate something,” Baz said. “No? The two’ve always struck me as pretty intertwined,” Niamh said, picking up her drink. And then, like it was a completely separate observation, “I’ve noticed you seem to hate a lot of things.”

I also have 44 pages at the top of my Miscellany document that contain nothing but snippets for musical chairs, and scenes cut from musical chairs, and scenes rewritten for musical chairs, and checklists made for musical chairs, and all caps yelling for musical chairs, and-

It's possible these latest two yellings are leading me in the right direction, but I don't know yet, because I made those notes and then dusted off my hands and ran walked away for a month. We'll see. I've at least started thinking about it again. (The trick is apparently pacing small circles around your enclosure while you're on hold with customer support for an hour.)

Here's that other deleted scene, as a treat. It was a treat for me, anyway, because I don't remember writing it.

“Despite our best efforts,” Agatha muttered, and everyone looked at her. She raised her eyebrows. “She started it. I was out for a week because of her.” “You gave Agatha a concussion?” Baz smirked as Simon said, “You’ve had a concussion?” “Yes,” Niamh answered, and Simon added, “That explains it.” Agatha turned from whatever she’d been about to say, replacing it with, “Explains what?” Simon gave a sad little hum and nudged her chin. “Why you don’t even know what it explains.”

By the way, the actual final chapter is 45 pages at present. One (1) page deeper than the burial ground for its failures. Though the burial ground has a lot of gaps between graves. That probably adds a few pages.

Anyhow, I do sincerely hope y'all will be able to read it before another 7 months have passed. I'll do my best. In the meantime, thank you to everyone who's still tagging me in things, and I'm sorry I disappear a lot and don't shower y'all with the love you deserve for it <3

What I Love Wednesday

Okay, so. What do I love about this? EV.ER.Y. THING!!!!

We tugged, and we kept tugging and we said ghastly things as we waited and finally, we got the heart of the movie right here.

I know we all waited for this as long as we waited for the movie, and then longer. I honestly think that pacing or whatever the reason, should not have been an issue in the way it seems to have been because I find it the opposite, that sometimes things were going way too fast between scenes and it needed to be slowed down, there needed to be more 'evidence' more transitions and falling in love actually seen and heard. But what can you do when you only have a certain amount of time to make a movie, I suppose. We got some amazing scenes by actors who obviously loved their roles and we can't ask for much more. But of course, we do.

We may have been able to intuit what Henry felt at this point, especially those of us who read the book, but we needed to see it. We know how Henry felt about Alex as a person, because of what he says about Alex not being an imposter, among other things. We know how he felt about missing his body, missing them having sex or being close, wanting him near again. But we didn't know Henry's heart, not completely. Maybe we weren't supposed to? But I think we were. I think we needed to SEE it. To HEAR it. Here I go asking for more.

And boy oh boy do you see it in the way that Henry looks at Alex here. We all saw their expressions in the stills and in the clip of the montage. But coupled with what we hear Henry come up with in reply to Alex's question. We see Henry. He has given himself and Alex the space to be in love. It makes Alex going to Kensington, and what he says at Kensington even more impactful.

I love that Alex asks his question, and Henry's reply makes the approach of the conversation on the dock have a much more fulfilling lead up to the why and how he says what he does and it doesn't seem so much like a dream when we know Henry is aware of where they are and has voiced it.

I have even written Alex in post movie fics to think that he was perhaps selfish/idealistic in laying that all on Henry, particularly because of how he thought they could just be free, when it was clear at that point in the movie (and also in the book somewhat) that realistically Henry was not able to think of himself on that same page or have hope of it. That he was still not allowing himself or feeling like he wasn't allowed to even consider that.

BUT HE WAS. He did MORE than consider it, he told Alex that his persistence gained him access to his heart and was making space and there was a space for him filled by him already right freaking there! He gave Alex hope, he took him within him, in the most guarded part of himself and he let him place himself there, he admitted to knowing Alex was literally keeping him alive, helping his heart to keep pumping.

With this scene, that dock scene is not out of nowhere at all. Of course, Alex had been dreaming of a life with Henry, we do know that before this, even with what he says to his mom and the uncertainty he has about their relationship, he still is thinking of more. That we can understand. But this shows so much more, it's like OF COURSE HE BETTER HAVE BEEN THINKING OF TELLING HIM HE LOVED HIM! Of course he was thinking of them having a future, a LIFE together. One where he was there beside Henry's heart, protecting it.

After what Henry shares with him here, and admits that Alex has created that space so that his heart can beat, there is no other conclusion that Alex could've made in how Henry was feeling about him.

What I find most heartbreaking about this scene being left out, is how well adapted this scene is from book to movie. I really love the story Henry tells, it's one of the absolute best book-to-movie alterations in the whole film. It's incredibly meaningful to show HENRY'S feelings. Not to mention what this is inspired from is one of the greatest parts of the book, in my opinion, and one of the most emotional. This scene tells the viewer that THIS is who Henry is, at the same time that Henry is completely revealed to Alex.

I love the movie, as is. I love it to the absolute farthest depths of my soul. But that doesn't mean I can't hope for more. That I don't think there was more that could've helped the scenes transition a little better and show more of their love because we can never get enough of seeing and hearing their love for one another.

This is now canon, (and not only canon from the book and inferred into the movie as part of the emails we know exist and didn't see as much of as we would've liked to because there wasn't time.) This is now a part of their story and I am so incredibly grateful that we were finally given this. It's better than I ever could've imagined any time I have asked or hoped to see whatever it was that was being talked about in this scene.

This long post will probably not be the last time I talk about it. I may talk about this three minutes just as much as I talk about the other 2+ hours of this movie. And the thousands of words in the book.

Sidenote: Aww, "sent the suit a prince of armor" That little flub in the middle of this story makes the story even more real. Because Henry is so damn human, isn't he? And isn't that the point of the whole thing? Just gorgeous acting from Nick and Taylor here, I can never say enough about how perfect they are as Alex and Henry and how thankful I am that Matthew found them and brought them to us. I love this movie so much. I still watch it multiple times a day, and this is going to be cut into it for me, where it was always meant to be.

Nolan’s car is sitting in the driveway and there are lights on inside the house; Theo immediately jumps out of the drivers seat, leaving Mason, Corey, and Liam waiting in the cars. As Theo begins to make his way towards the side of the house, he pauses and listens through the home’s open windows. Rather than march forward, he turns back to the three waiting and motions for them to get out of the vehicle. The cars are turned off and once the other three start heading towards the side door of the house, they hear what gave Theo pause in his scaring. “AND YOU DIDN’T THINK TO TELL ME THIS WASN’T ENOUGH WHEN IT STARTED’ The shadows of two people are cast on the curtains of the first story windows as one is running across the house, leaving the other desperately trailing behind.
