Wild Westalia Week 2022 | Day 5 | Historical 'Stockman Jack' - 1945
Follow @wildwestaliaweek for more Hetalia cowboy content!
↓ Indigenous Stock Worker History ↓ Warning: Contains the names and images of Indigenous people that are deceased.
Indigenous stock workers have been an integral part of successful stations as they usually made up majority of the workforce in part due to their resourcefulness and knowledge of how to work the land and the high expenses of hiring white workers after the gold rush. These Indigenous station workers were exploited, often only receiving food and clothes for their labour or a much smaller pay compared to white station workers resulting in "stolen wages", these cases have been an enduring battle to rectify to this day and are not limited to Indigenous station workers. Exploitation amongst Indigenous workers culminated in notable strikes across Australia such as the Pilbara Strike (1946-49) and the Wave Hill Walk-Off (1966), contributing to a long history of Indigenous struggle. It is also important to remember that Indigenous stockwomen continued to work despite the Native Administration Act of 1936 officially disallowing the practice of hiring women to work on stations, these stockwomen were typically referred to as men in official documents to navigate this. Some notable Indigenous stockmen/stockwomen include (but are not limited to); Gwoya "One Pound Jimmy" Tjungurrayi, Maudie Moore, Charlie Flanagan, Nancy Watson, William "Deucem" Smith, and Vincent Lingiarri. It can be argued that the stock workers of Australia hold a similar mythos to the American Old West's cowboys -- and Indigenous people played a big role in creating that. @wildwestaliaweek | Day 5: Historical
The Caucasus does not have much of a connection to the Wild West aside from one character — the Georgian region of Guria.
A people known for their riding feats, Gurian men and women were recruited from the Caucasus to perform in American Wild West shows (notably Buffalo Bill’s Wild West) between the 1890s and 1920s. Show organizers promoted the Georgian riders as Russian Cossacks, as at the time Georgia was part of the Russian Empire and the Cossacks had a wider reputation.
Late Western historian Dee Brown noted that the Georgians won widespread recognition and significantly influenced cowboys.
“Trick riding came to rodeo by way of a troupe of Cossack daredevils …” he noted. “Intrigued by the Cossack’s stunts on their galloping horses, Western cowboys soon introduced variations to American rodeo. Colourful costumes seem to be a necessary part of trick riding, and it is quite possible that the outlandish western garb which has invaded rodeo area can be blamed directly on Cossacks and trick riders.”
Character-wise, Zurab (Guria) visited America for a short time. He was able to show off in front of Alfred before returning home to tell the other Georgians about seeing tall buildings and “moving rooms” (elevators).
Alternative image and more information under the cut!
The act usually began with Georgian dances and songs, and then was followed by stunt riding.
“They stood in the saddle, on their feet and on their hands and kicked their legs as the horses flew madly around. They rode standing in their saddles with their faces facing their horses tails and chased each other to capture a handkerchief carried in their mouth…” (The Philadelphia Inquirer, April 9, 1893).
The performance of the Georgians was incredibly popular at the time, so much so that it is said to be comparable to the popularity of Native Americans and cowboys. Fans of the Georgian trick riders came to include Queen Victoria, Woodrow Wilson, and Theodore Roosevelt.
The First World War and the Bolshevik takeover of Georgia put an end to the import of Georgian riders to America. Many who returned home would be imprisoned, exiled, or sworn to secrecy about their time in the West (with any Western possessions and memorabilia destroyed).

Wild Westalia Week 2022
Day 3: Rhinestone cowboy.
Golden opportunity.
@wildwestaliaweek
The streets were busy at dawn, tired workers returning home, mothers calling their children inside and little by little, the town settled into silence. Antonio walked around slowly, his feet heavy as he neared his destination.
His ambition and a bit of begging (more like nagging) at the owner had secured a late night performance, from then on, his silver tongue was the ticket to fame and fortune. His usual clothes were replaced with golden sequins and velvet as his mouth delivered half truths and amiable smiles.

Feliksball: The Spaghetti Western
Hey guys! I’m here to contribute a Polandball redraw to @wildwestaliaweek ! This is for the the free day! Yes, I know I’m late.
Looking at all the genuinely educational, high-effort posts, I’m a bit sad I can only contribute such a silly thing, but maybe next year. I also wanted to draw more from the Pierogi Western contest, but it turns out many of the jokes don’t translate well. I might try again next year though. Or maybe I might try drawing one of the other comics anyway this year, even though I’m late.
This comic is a redraw of “The Spaghetti Western” by the wonderful u/hexcodeblue! Check out the original if you like this one.
Enjoy! Sorry for the sloppy text!

What falls under incest ships? Would that include USUK and ships like that?
I'm going to just say for the purpose of ease that if you want to portray a ship that is not "blood related", I will not allow it if that ship is portrayed as being both a ship and a family dynamic. So for example, USUK would be allowed only if they aren't depicted as having a familial relationship (brothers or otherwise) whilst being romantically involved.
As for "blood relations" that can get a little iffy to determine but I'm going to name any ship that has -cest at the end as banned outright (i.e. Germancest and Itacest).
If anyone is still unsure if their ship is banned I'm happy to check your work privately before submission! Remember though that it's also up to you to allow enough time before the day to make adjustments if needed if you do ask though.

This might come off as a weird question, but do submissions have to be set during the wild west era (like 1800s)? I only ask because some of the prompts seem a little more modern-era to me, so I wanted to make sure. Thanks so much in advance! 😊
(Not a weird question at all anon!) Any era is perfectly fine, I encourage people to go outside the bounds of the 1800s if they're compelled to! Life would be boring without Dolly Parton, so why should I stop anybody from going nuts with the yeehaw content? 🤠 - Michi

I know the form closes in august, I hope you'll be able to post the finalized promps soon after bcs I think I'd like to put a lot of effort into my pieces! This is very exciting :D
I wouldn't mind potentially pulling back the form close date to close in Late July. I've had so many more responses than expected already as I didn't know if Westerns/Hetalia would mesh with people! The prompts will be released the same day after the form is closed nonetheless as I'm keeping up with the most popular. 🤠

A reminder that I will be using ET for this event! Don't worry if you're not in that time zone, I'm not either but I have a feeling a lot more people are closer to ET than AWST like I am and would like to accommodate that. All days will start at 12:00am ET and end 11:59pm ET. I suggest you post earlier or schedule posts to be in that 24-hour window so you don't miss the reblog period for each day!🤠 I'm very eager to see what you guys have made during the week!

Fanfiction Reblogging Preferences
Hi y'all,
I just wanted to tell any people out there who wish to write a fanfiction for this event that it's preferred that you post a link to the fanfiction from an external website (i.e. AO3).
If you do post your fanfiction on Tumblr though, make sure you use a line break/read more option as fanfiction posts can appear quite long and clog up the blog! Since this option is less preferred, for any posts that appear too long I will ask you to add a line break before I reblog and if no changes are made I will not be reblogging these long Tumblr posts.
Above is how the line break/read more option should appear on your post for anyone who may need it. 🤠

Do you accept late submissions?
I'll be leaving a week after the official period to reblog late works, this will be the dates October 9th-15th. I also appreciate people sending me a private message to let me know if they'll be late to post so I can keep my eye out for their work too during this late period.
Any works that aren't completed before or during that late submission week I will not be reblogging.
- Michi
