Ex-rebel gets 40-year jail term in landmark Ugandan case

"A Ugandan court has sentenced a former commander in the notorious Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) to 40 years in prison following a landmark war crimes trial. Kwoyelo is the first commander from the feared rebel group to be convicted by a Ugandan court."

"The International Criminal Court in the Netherlands sentenced another LRA commander, Dominic Ongwen, to 25 years in prison, in 2021."

We are hurling through space on a world filled with beautiful and bizarre creatures, all borrowing energy, passing on genetic information, living, adapting, and dying. This is a five month old orphaned sloth, who is currently being nurtured and cared for until she is ready to return to the wild. Had her mother not been poached, she would be clinging to her high in the trees. Thanks to the Aiunau foundation, she’ll have a second chance. Aiunau is also working to train local law enforcement and educate communities about protecting these animals in the wild. . INSECT HOUSE I live near the source of the Hogsmill river and have been cyling along the Hogsmill Nature Reserve for my exercise. After watching Elliott Newton on Earth LIVE lessons (great youtube series by @lizziedalywild) I realised the Berrylands NR is like a side tributary. So I cycled further downstream for my exercise, along the Hogsmill to Berrylands, and I loved the wildlife pond and the insect house on the reserve. Just after taking the picture of the insect house I saw a Grey Wagtail on the stream and a Little Egret overhead! The open space along the Hogsmill is so important for exercise and getting out (with adequate social isolation), for local people. Cycling along its length made me realise it is such an important wildlife corridor in outer suburbia of SW London and links the Surrey countryside with the River Thames at Kingston and the green spaces of Hampton Court and Bushey Park beyond. It is also a historical river. The Roman road from London went to the spring of the Hogsmill in Ewell. Henry VIII built Nonsuch Palace nearby. And Saxon kings were crowned at Kingston, where the Hogsmill reached the Thames. I really admire the way that the Western Landowner’s Alliance is pushing forward in what could be called the “radical center” -- recognizing that folks on all sides of issues come to the table with both legitimate concerns and potential to be part of the solution. Preserving working landscapes and strengthening wildlife corridors are a couple of the most noble pursuits Idaho could choose, and I’m glad for WLA’s leadership on the subject.

The Ecuadorian Chocó is one of the most threatened tropical forests on the planet. Located within the Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena biodiversity hotspot, it rivals the Amazon in biodiversity and far surpasses it in terms of endemism. New efforts are underway to secure a future for the Ecuadorian Chocó by establishing connectivity among three reserves that together span over one million acres of land and almost 5000 meters of altitude. With less than 2% of the original lowland Chocó forest remaining and an annual deforestation rate of 2.5% – mostly from conversion to oil palm – the Ecuadorian Chocó must be saved now or never. Purchasing this land will link Jocotoco’s Rio Canandé Reserve with two governmental reserves: Cotacachi-Cayapas Ecological Reserve and El Pambilar Wildlife Refuge. Fundación Jocotoco has established an endowment fund for long-term protection of the conserved lands. The organization will establish the first research station in the Chocó region, providing another source of revenue.  Buffer areas will be leased to Verdecanandé, which, along with WholeForest, will apply a model of sustainable forestry that includes timber hauled by cables to avoid threats from road construction.
