St John’s Wort harvest time!!! 🌼🌼🌼🌼🌼 I look forward to gathering this botanical every year... There’s something magical about how it transforms ordinary oil or alcohol into a deep, ruby-red herbal medicine that surprises me no matter how many times I’ve seen it 🥰! It’s just the coolest thing! If you’re interested in learning about harvesting and preparing St. John’s Wort, let me know by dropping a comment or send a DM. I’m thinking about writing a blog post and would love to know if there’s interest! ☀️✨ #stjohnswort #hypericumperforatum #wildmedicine #stjohnswortflowers #herbalism #herbalmedicine #herbalmedicinemaking #herbharvest #stjohnswortharvest #wildharvest #wildgathering #wildharvested #wildharvesting #wildflowers #wildplants #fawnlilybotanica (at Eugene, Oregon) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQuD8O8HTw1/?utm_medium=tumblr

Two days ago it was too wet to reach this patch of winterberry nestled among the cattails. Now that the temperature has dropped and we have a lovely coating of fresh snow, I’ll make another attempt tomorrow. The solstice is almost here! #solsticeiscoming #yuletide #wildgathering #natureisbeautiful 💫🌨🕯 https://www.instagram.com/iphotoartist/p/CXrr-O2LfVP/?utm_medium=tumblr

Tu cosa farai? #fullmoon #feliceadesso #wildandfree #wildgathering #groeyourself #loveyourself #rebalance #inbeautyandchaos #verilymoment #seekinspirecreate #mymagicalmorning

I think we eventually ruled that a kirin could wear cotton, hemp, linen, floss silk specifically (probably wildgathered, so most likely golden silk), and possibly wool. I'm not real sure about Chinese use of wool as a fabric - like obviously they had them and goats but I've never been able to find an example of a Chinese or Japanese spindle that wasn't specifically for silk or cotton (and I want one real bad).
So I wouldn't stand up in front of a conference and insist on wool that was spun instead of felted, but I wouldn't object to it in a fic, either. Also, long staple cotton can be made very silklike! So if I was writing a huge 12K fic I would probably specify cotton or linen as their main fabrics.
PS I just remembered, it's spiders that have their spinerets on the back end. Take that as you will, Spider-Man fandom. There's a species that makes a very beautiful golden silk that someone designed a garment out of by encouraging them to spin a web along a pattern!

I am legit Dumb about fabric stuff…..i thought silk came from silkworm poop?
,Well… no.
Okay context yall know I’m a knitting nerd but I am also a spinning nerd, and while I could probably not get a degree in fiber I could probably get a pretty good certificate. Buy me a drink and I’ll talk for three hours about wool crimp, is what I’m telling you. In this case however I went on a research spiral specifically because I was trying to figure out what a kirin from 12 Kingdoms could wear, since they’re made ill by animal suffering or death. And most fancy clothing in China is silk.
TRIGGER WARNING: Animal harm, even if it is bugs.
Okay so partly you’re right that it does come from silk worms, but no, it does not come from their butts, it comes from their mouth! Silk is a sort of spit that silkworms all moths that spin cocoons, actually! – use to spin their cocoons. This is actually Super Neat and Interesting because a silkworm’s cocoon is one single thread held together with a special glue! This means if you find the end of the thread you can unwind that cocoon and have a single piece of silk idk how many yards long but A Lot.
Unfortunately, a hatching silk moth destroys the glue and weakens the silk thread so it can chew it’s way out, which leaves you what is called floss silk, which can be carded and spun but is not as strong as the single thread silk.  It’s not as glossy and pretty, either.
So what do you do? You let five or ten moths emerge from their cocoons, in your batch of silkworms, to produce the next generation. The rest are … well, put in an oven for a while, or boiled. Then you drop the cocoons in a bath to get rid of the silk glue and wind forty or fifty individual silk threads to make the yarn. (Or you can stretch the cocoon out to make matawas – but that’s getting into nerd territory.)
So yeah. Silk is murder fabric. Sorry.

A power is on the earth and in the air,  From which the vital spirit shrinks afraid,  And shelters him in nooks of deepest shade, From the hot steam and from the fiery glare. Look forth upon the earth—her thousand plants  Are smitten; even the dark sun-loving maize  Faints in the field beneath the torrid blaze; The herd beside the shaded fountain pants; For life is driven from all the landscape brown;  The bird hath sought his tree, the snake his den,  The trout floats dead in the hot stream, and men Drop by the sunstroke in the populous town:  As if the Day of Fire had dawned, and sent  Its deadly breath into the firmament.

Day 1 of St. John’s Wort infusion... 🌼 Medicine making with St.John’s Wort is pure magic! 💫 These sunshine-yellow wildflowers will turn this organic olive oil scarlet red within a few days, and it will become even deeper, richer, and thicker after a few weeks. For the first few days of the infusion, I keep it outdoors (covered) in direct sunlight so that it can absorb the warmth and energy of the sun ☀️ before bringing the medicinal oil indoors to further infuse in a windowsill. I’ll post the end result soon (which is nothing short of amazing), so stay tuned! #stjohnswort #hypericumperforatum #wildmedicine #stjohnswortflowers #herbalism #herbalmedicine #stjohnswortoil #herbaloil #herbaloilmaking #diyherbalmedicine #diynatural #diynaturalproducts #naturalmedicine #naturalmedicinemaking #diynaturalmedicine #stjoanswort #stjohnswortmedicine #herbalmedicinemaking #herbharvest #stjohnswortharvest #wildharvest #wildgathering #wildharvested #wildharvesting #wildflowers #wildplants #fawnlilybotanica https://www.instagram.com/p/CSxCtEDpq24/?utm_medium=tumblr
