Day 5 of the 15 Day Plush Challenge! Credit for the prompt list goes to cosyraine on instagram!
The Prompt For Day 5 Is: "Plush That Is Favorite Animal"
Meet Mango! She is a red panda (made by wild republic). Now I'm sure people are aware that I am obsessed with frogs. But they aren't actually my favorite animal! They're a close second though. I actually love red pandas more. I think they're super adorable, and they're also a very fascinating species. Did you know they're distantly related to animals such as skunks and weasels? Or that there's two subspecies of red panda? And that they mainly eat bamboo, even though they have a carnivore digestive system? Now you do!!
If you'd like to participate in the challenge, here's the prompt list

Egg Harbor City to hold annual rabies vaccination clinic
EGG HARBOR CITY – The city will hold its annual Rabies Clinic 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, March 27 at the Public Works garage, 1001 Chicago Ave. Social distancing protocols and mask wearing are required.
The rabies clinic is the first in a series of actions focusing on animals in the community. SustainableEHC’s series titled, “Pet Parenting 101,” will include several events and announcements geared toward keeping pets and families safe and healthy.
The vaccinations are free, and residents can obtain their annual animal license at the same time. Licensing fees are $8 for spayed/neutered animals and $11 if not spayed/neutered. Licensing fees help fund rabies clinics and animal control efforts.
The campaign to keep rabies out of the city’s pet population is succeeding thanks to immunization of cats and dogs. Rabies can be fatal if it is transmitted to humans and not treated. Almost all human cases of rabies were fatal until Louis Pasteur and Emile Roux developed the vaccine in 1865. Today, deaths from rabies are rare.
Rabies in cats accounted for 90% of domestic animal cases in New Jersey, and for the last five years, there has been an average of 16 cats infected with rabies annually. Most rabies cases are found in wild animals such as raccoons and skunks, which can transmit the virus to household pets, and potentially to humans, so it is important to make sure your pets are vaccinated against the disease.
The first rabies case of 2021 in Atlantic County was confirmed Feb. 17 after a raccoon collected from a property on the 300-block of Sooys Landing Road in Port Republic tested positive. The raccoon had killed several chickens and chased the homeowner when approached. The Atlantic County Division of Public Heath determined there was no human exposure but reminded residents to protect their pets against rabies.
Dogs and cats who receive an initial rabies vaccination are not considered immunized until 28 days after the vaccine has been administered, therefore it is strongly recommended that any animal newly vaccinated animals or those too young to receive the vaccine (less than three months) not be left outdoors unattended.
Public health officials also advise residents to teach their children to stay away from wild, stray, or aggressive animals. Never feed or touch wild animals or try to keep them as pets. If you are bitten by an animal, wash the wound immediately with soap and water and seek medical attention. All bites should be reported to the Atlantic County Division of Public Health at 609-645-5971.

Elves in the Crucible States
Once the Elves were mighty. In forgotten corners of Beleren statues and overgrown ruins speak of the wonders of a lost age. ALl that came to an end in a period called the Age of Silence. Even the mightiest clerics and wizards of the elvenkind have been unable to seek out the souls of those lost in this age. Much of the knowledge of the elves was lost in this cataclysm. Draconic histories tell us of the last citadels of the elves falling under the onslaught of the Orcs when Orcs Were Mighty. In the ages since, elves have struggled to forge a new legacy, but they do so without unity. Their ancient histories and oral traditions speak of a time when all elves spoke but one language and lived in palatial estates of tremendous arcane attunement. In the Crucible States there are four main types of elves who are identifiable culturally, each speaks their own language. Different permutations of a lost ancestral proto-Elven that scholars believe likely resembled Sylvan: the language of the Fey. The Elves of today are quarrelsome and often hyper-individualistic, many of their tales speak of the decadence and weakness of their ancestors as being their undoing.
A Place In the Sun: The greatest threat to the Elves in the past few millennia seems to come not from the Fiends, unseelie Archfey, or Dragons who have long sought the destruction of their race. Rather it seems the greatest threat to elves seems to come from the burgeoning, young Human Race. Already wars with Humans have turned into wars of survival. The Efreeti-blooded sorcerer king who founded Rijan and Kulvin did so by obliterating the Visnoi (Sand Elves). Conflict between elves and humans have been continual since the first human civilizations rose up under the guidance of their Draconic overlords. But the conflict is not so simple as a tale of good and evil. Terrible acts have been done both by Elves and Humans against one another. Great love has blossomed before though and time and again they have proven what unity between the two races is capable of.
Ash Elves
The Ascren Empire was built on the idea of creating a culturally homogeneous realm in the tumultuous and fractured lands of the Crucible States. Many resisted this process of assimilation but few as much determination as the elves. With their long lives and secluded settlements they were able to resist well. But when the Empire couldn’t win over or break the elves, they instead began kidnapping elven children from the meadows and groves where they were raised, burning these kindergartens behind them. These children were placed in boarding school or under the wardship of noble families of good standing and would grow to adulthood over the long centuries of Imperial rule. Can’t Go Home: The tutelage of Grey Elves was meant to alienate them from the ‘savage nature’ of their native cultures. They were raised to be civilized, the Ascrene called them Noble Elves, a term hated by the Belnoi and Seqnoi, who instead call them Motnoi (Ashen ones) or Ascanoi (Traitorous ones). As such they often clash with their elven kin, being thought of as haughty or prejudicial. As such many Motnoi either live in human metropoli or in remote solitude. They exist best either in mixed company or no company at all. A Stern Education: Elven wards were taken with the express aim of utilizing their natural abilities to the advantage of the Empire. They were trained as knights and wizards, serving as elite guards and master mages of the arcane universities that made Ascren powerful. Emperor August Prelatorian.
City Elves
The busy shipping lanes through Artan Bay bring with them many Aigadosi elves, mostly found in the coastal merchant cities but sometimes finding work as bards, court painters, and artisans, the city elves are renown among humans for their astonishing beauty and grace. Physically they mature at about the same rate as humans though they can live upwards of a thousand years. Few do though, city elves tend to be brash and drawn to adventure. A Proud People: The land of Aigados has endured for millennia as a shining republic of the City Elves. This long history and legacy of freedom and prosperity has given the City Elves or ‘Koinoi’ as they call themselves in their native tongue something of a haughty and prideful demeanor. This attitude extends even to their own cousins the swamp and pine elves, who they consider somewhat more primitive.
Art and Culture: The culture of the City Elves predates humanity, drawing their art and mythology from the lost High Elves of ancient times. Tales of great romances and epic adventures, centuries old have been immortalized in statues, paintings, plays, and poems by the Koinoi. They are deeply proud of their history of artistry and hold the Koinoi form as the highest standard of beauty, a beauty standard that has become imposed on some human cultures. While they respect the artistry of the dwarves and their craftsmanship they view most human attempts at art crude, quaint, or folksy.
Swamp Elves
In the wide swamplands that line the coast west of Feldri and in the marshy tributaries and mangrove forests that creep their way inland, lies the realm of the Belnoi or Swamp Elves. They generally live in familial clans led by the eldest female member, usually a druid. They, and their cousins the Seq’noi live in very similar cultural structures, their main differences are marked by religion and appearance. The Swamp Elves can be slightly startling looking to humans, their fingers are long with webbing that reaches the first knuckle, their skin mottled shades from silty tan to deep, muted greens. Their hair is thick and wild and some Belnoi go so far as to cultivate vines or mosses into growing in the tangles. Spirits of the Swamp: Many divine creatures lurk among the mangroves and lagoons of the Belnoi’s territory. Demonic toads, catfish blessed by water spirits, snakes that act as messengers of the angels, can all be found if one is looking with the right skillset. Many swamp elves seek out these creatures for veneration and so draw their power from the connection to these nature spirits rather from the Feywild as their cousins do. Some hommage is still paid to the Feywild but the relationship is more antagonistic, many of the swamp dwelling fey are deeply malevolent. Unconquerable: There was never a way for the Ascren Empire to formally declare war on the Belnoi, they drained swamps, cut back mangroves, and were met with armies of swamp-dwelling creatures. Time proved that the best strategy was simply to surround them and leave them be. Human colonies were built in the swampland under Ascrene rule and tax collectors were sent to the tribes that didn’t shoot on sight.
Pine Elves
The Seq’noi are close kin of the Belnoi, are masters of the wooded foothills of the mountain spines that run through the center of the Crucible States. They are less openly hostile in their dealings with humans than their cousins but tensions do still arise. In culture they are a lively people, fond of loud jangly music and wild dancing. Elven firewater and gin are highly prized, in Feldri there is even a famed elven distillery run by a powerful clan. In appearance Pine elves are often born with features of the creatures of the forest around them, skunk striped hair or skin brindled like the coat of a boar, though they are fond of cosmetic enhancement and using magic to tamper with their appearance. Advancing Wilds: The Seq’noi consider themselves something of an anti-civilization. Everywhere their forest touches they consider their realm. The depths of the forests are to them sacred places and they will wage war on lumberjacks, hunters, and any other who would do harm to the land or it’s creatures. With the fall of Ascren they have stood unopposed in their forward march, new growth spreads fast over the unclaimed and empty landscape. Kindred of the Fey: The Seq’noi are very traditionalist in their attachment to the Feywild. The homeland and progenitor of the elven races is the basis of the religious system of the Seq’noi and they align themselves closely with many of the archfey.
Half-Elves
To humans, elves are often considered beautiful, their grace and delicate features make them deeply desirable. On the flip side of this for many elves, humans hold a strange fascination, their ability for quick adaption as well as their mayfly lifespans give them what some elves consider a romantic quality. Especially with the Koinoi but also with the Seq’noi and Belnoi as well , this leads to crossbreeding with humans. Half-elves mature slightly slower than humans and live near twice as long, two traits that can cause them to feel out of place or awkward in their youth as their peers outgrow them and enter adulthood. Among the Koinoi half-elves usually can find place and fit in but often they can end up feeling distant from the long-lived Seq’noi and Belnoi. As such Half-Elves usually end up living in human societies. A Mixed Inheritance: Many different people have many different reactions to Half-Elves, among the Ascrene and the Koinoi they are a common sight and few would think much of it. In Cymrin they might be mistaken for nobility, but in the more unfriendly Belnoi communities they may be considered abominable half-breeds. The Orumic as well may be more hostile as their coastal settlements frequently skirmish with the Seq’noi. Ambassadors: Because of their cultural mobility between elves and humans, half-elves often end up being mediators between the two. In general once a town has a few half-elves their relations with the local elvish community begins to improve quickly.

Could relatives of measles virus jump from animals to us?
By Jonathan BallUniversity of Nottingham
We've seen recent spikes in measles infections.
Some European countries, including the UK, lost their measles-free status and many developing countries, especially parts of Africa, Asia and Oceania are seeing frequent outbreaks.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is experiencing a protracted outbreak of over a quarter of a million cases and more than 5,000 deaths, mainly in children under-five.
And the reason for this measles upturn?
Declining uptake of measles vaccination. You need to immunise over 90% of a population to protect it from measles outbreaks. In DRC immunisation rates are less than 60%.
And there's a potential hidden danger of poor vaccine coverage.
Measles belongs to a group of highly related viruses called morbilliviruses, which can be found in various mammals, and these are adept at jumping from one host species to another.
The common ancestor of measles virus is thought to have been a virus circulating in cattle which, according to Louise Cosby, emeritus, honorary professor at the Wellcome Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine, "probably jumped into humans when cattle were domesticated thousands of years ago".
"There are also historical records which suggest that canine distemper virus - or CDV - might have arisen from human measles in the Americas, following one or more human-to-dog spill-overs during extensive measles outbreaks in indigenous people, who were exposed to the virus for the first time when they came into contact with European explorers," she explained.
A cross-species spill-over is the transmission of a pathogen from one vertebrate species to another.
Deadly to dogs
As CDV has spread around the world, there are many examples of it hopping into other species including seals, cats and even monkeys - often with devastating effects.
In the 1980s, this virus wiped out the last wild population of black-footed ferrets and is even putting some endangered big cat species in peril.
To be able to flit from one species to another, a virus often has to adapt in order to use the new host cell machinery.
We call these potential host-blocks to virus infection the species barrier.
The first barrier a virus must overcome is cell attachment and entry. According to Dr Dalan Bailey, a virologist based at the Pirbright Institute, what makes morbilliviruses so adept at cross-species transmission is that the proteins it commandeers to do this are very similar across different mammalian species, so the species barrier is low.
And this could pose a potential future risk to human health
"We've definitely got evidence that non-human morbilliviruses can easily adapt to enter human cells, and we're confident that it can replicate in them too," Dr Bailey said.
It takes just two simple mutations in one of CDV's surface proteins to allow it to infect human cells.
A threat to humans
So, what's stopping animal morbilliviruses cropping up in humans?
"A major factor is likely to be pre-existing immunity, where natural infection or vaccination against measles provides a pool of antibodies, some of which cross-react and prevent infection by non-human morbilliviruses", explained Dr Bailey.
But, as vaccination rates fall, we will continue to see major outbreaks of measles, and this will give other morbilliviruses, like CDV, the chance to explore a new human host.
Currently, there is no evidence of human infection by CDV or any of its close non-human virus relatives, but we cannot discount the possibility, as Dr Katrina Lythgoe, from the Big Data Institute at the University of Oxford explained.
"You might have a sub-population of individuals where there's been no recent measles outbreaks and low vaccination coverage, and therefore low measles immunity. And it's in these people where you might see possible localised outbreaks," she said.
"We know spill-overs can happen - measles was one after all - but whether we could get human-to-human chains of transmission is difficult to say."
Often a virus must mutate for successful cross-species transmission. And whilst declining vaccination rates might not provide enough scope for a non-human morbillivirus to adapt and outcompete measles, there is one scenario where emergence might just be possible - The World Health Organization'sWHO plans for measles eradication.
If we successfully eradicate measles through vaccination, there will be a temptation to stop immunisation, and herd immunity to measles - and therefore other morbilliviruses - will decline.
Prof Brian Willett, who studies morbilliviruses at the University of Glasgow agrees that it's this scenario, rather than falling vaccination rates, that could provide CDV with the opportunity to infect humans. But only if the conditions are right.
"Will it start in the UK? Well no, because most dogs are vaccinated and there's very little CDV. It would have to be in a country where dogs or other animals can develop CDV, for example in the US where there are outbreaks in raccoons, skunks and grey foxes which could spread into local dog populations," Prof Willett explained.
"A lot of things would have to fall into place. Removing measles immunity from the human population, an animal population that is shedding CDV and then the two coming together.
"So, if you remove measles immunity from a country where morbilliviruses such as CDV are endemic, then it's only a matter of time before you start to see evidence of humans being exposed. Whether the virus would then adapt to the new host remains to be seen", he said
Bovine clues
The researchers that I have spoken to are quick to highlight what happened in cattle when rinderpest vaccination stopped following its eradication.
"The net effect of rinderpest eradication was that there was no herd immunity to morbillivirus in cattle worldwide," said Dr Bailey.
"And what we are seeing now in the field is compelling evidence of infection by a morbillivirus called PPRV".
PPRV - or Peste des Petits Ruminants virus to give it its full name - circulates widely in relatively small animals such as sheep and goats.
The amount of infection that cattle are now experiencing is immense. "In Pakistan they're seeing seroprevalence of up to 17%, in Sudan they've seen 42% and I've spoken to people working in Tanzania and from the DRC and they're all seeing this high seropositivity," said Dr Bailey.
In sheep, goats and even antelope, PPRV can be devastating. So far there is no evidence that it causes any disease in cattle.
There's one obvious lesson from rinderpest eradication - that declining measles immunity will mean humans are susceptible to other morbilliviruses.
Of course, we can't predict which, or even if, a virus would emerge. But reported infections in monkeys makes CDV a prime candidate.
How it might behave if it does make the switch to humans is difficult to predict.
"Although measles infection can have devastating complications, this is rarer compared to CDV and some of the other morbilliviruses which normally produce severe disease in their natural hosts," said Prof Cosby.
"CDV is very virulent and normally will infect the brain in the later stages of the disease, whereas with measles this is a rare, but really dangerous event."
"This is not the only cause of death, as all morbilliviruses, including CDV, cause immune suppression in their host, which can lead to secondary bacterial infections, giving rise particularly to pneumonia and in some cases diarrhoea. So, CDV is a pretty nasty disease," she said.
Monkey deaths
Prof Cosby added: "Compared to measles, when you look at how CDV and the other morbilliviruses behave in the host, they're really devastating."
We can't tell what CDV would do to humans, but the fact that in some of the monkey outbreaks, many of the animals died should give us some cause for concern.
If we do ever reach the point of having a measles-free world, then we'll have to think very carefully about how best to stop its relatives hopping on board.
Some think that continued use of the measles vaccine might be sufficient to protect against a possible jump into humans by CDV, but Prof Cosby isn't as convinced:
"Although measles antibodies cross-react with CDV, they're not a perfect match; whilst measles vaccine helps to protect against CDV disease in non-human primates it does not totally stop virus being released from these animals.
"So, we may need to use a more CDV-specific vaccine to prevent any potential spread of CDV in the human population".
Of course, the most pressing consideration is not what might happen if we do eradicate measles, but how we can rise to the challenge of making this happen.
It will require better global access to the measles vaccine and many more people willing to take it.
Until then, measles will hang on to its deadly human morbillivirus billing.

Blade Runner 2019, Pokemon & Textile Recycling
Welcome back to another exciting episode from those wacky Nerds you all love. This week we have actually made an episode that actually happens to be both Nerdy and entertaining somehow. It may actually even be able to be described as illuminating and educational, but that is up for debate. Now the ever important first topic, we have found out that there is a new series of graphic novels (or comics if you are as ancient as Buck) set in the Blade Runner universe at the time of 2019. Which, for those individuals that have been living in a cave or under a rock; and somehow have never read the book or seen the fabulously stupendous movie is the year it is set in. Not our perfunctorily boring reality, as we don’t have replicants and space colonies, sad to say. Oh humanity, the 60’s and 70’s were looking so bright, then you got caught up with hippies and drugs and look at you now, still stuck on earth with moronic politicians that are utterly boring.
Next up we look at the new Pokémon game and discuss some of the various aspects, highlights and what we believe may be oversights as well. We wonder about the cross over into Super Smash Bros. Is Nintendo looking at a massive reveal next year at e3 with the launch of the Switch2, will we see all the various Pokémon from all evolutions of all games included in a monster pack? Will this be the start of a new trend in gaming? Will that stain come out of my favourite black shirt? Who knows, what we do know is that this is looking like a fun game to play so keep your eyes open and catch it while you can.
Buck brings us news about the excessive waste of clothing going to landfill and polluting the planet. That’s right, all you strange people out there wearing lycra and spandex. The micro fibres from synthetic clothing are bad, nasty and downright toxic. Shame on anyone wearing synthetics, don’t you know they harm the environment. We, unlike some people have scientific evidence supporting this statement, so listen in and see what we are talking about. If you want to learn more please refer to the link provided. If you wish to read the article please go to page 61, if you wish to remain ignorantly oblivious please go to page 666. Hope you like the flash back to the choose your own adventure books, if you grew up reading these you are lucky.
As normal we have the various shout outs, remembrances, birthdays, and special events. We also talk about the games we are playing. As always please remember to take care of yourselves and look out for each other, stay safe and hydrated, got to catch them all…
