thing's i've been rotating around in my head like a microwave lately: the way native english speakers learn to speak and write english without ever being taught its history
i listen to a podcast on the history of the english language and there were a few episodes rencently-ish on pronunciation (159-161). He explained how voiced vs unvoiced consonants work, how semivowels and approximates work.
SO MANY SPELLING MYSTERIES can be explained by "we froze the spellings after the invention of the printing press, but because pronouncing X is difficult, we shifted to the voiced/unvoiced counterpart of that latter/dropped a syllable". it's like 3rd eye open on how we spell and say things
some consonant sounds are formed by movements of the tongue/mouth to constrict the sound coming out. some are formed by doing that and activating the voicebox. those are unvoiced sounds (no voicebox) and voiced sound (voicebox activated).
f is unvoiced. v is voiced.
why is it wives but a singular wife? well, originally it was wife and wifas (or various other suffixes back when english had a conjugation system like spanish/french/etc). When the suffix became a single s sound it was really hard to say. wifes. try it. it's hard. that's cause all the sounds in that word are voiced except the f and swapping to the unvoiced version for a single sound is hard. so we started saying wives. v is the voiced version of f so the motion of your mouth is exactly the same.
rotating like a microwave y'all
(most of the remaining 75% of spelling mysteries can be explained by:
some pretentious jerk decided to make the spelling look more like its greek/latin roots in the 1500s but we kept pronouncing it the way it's spelled
nobody knew how to pronounce the word so they guessed off the spelling and guessed wrong
gothic script made it hard to read things with lots of u, i, m, n etc next to each other so the scribes fucked with it so they could read the goofy handwriting style
The Great Vowel Shift Strikes Again
this word got adopted after a bunch of spelling shenanigans from a country that doesn't have X rule and we kept the original spelling
someone tried to standardize the spelling system to make things easier and people were like "yeah! great idea" and followed the rule about half the time leading to an even less standardized system)
#amazing garbage language#i fucking love this podcast#i keep thinking “we should teach this to elementary kids”#but then i'm like “how could you make a child care about this nonsense”#but then i'm like “little Lynn would have LOVED THIS”#but then i'm like “little Lynn was perhaps not representative of the average child”#english history#mine

Pensamientosde2amparatratardesacarmeelpesodelaculpadeencima.

#1347: Sarah and Adnan Klaric were unhappily married and each started cheating on the other. they went into online dating, and Adnan found someone who was in a similar situation to him - he described it as "suddenly in love again". when he first met this person in real life..... it was his wife. they had each been cheating, but with each other. they claimed this as adultery (how??) and got a divorce (despite everyone on the internet telling them to rethink...). Richard Batista was a surgeon who gave his wifa Dawnell a kidney in 2001, and filed for a divorce in 2005. he claimed the kidney as marital property and demanded it back, but a court ruled that it wasn't and he could actually be liable for criminal prosecution.

the dawn of self-redemption
as March winds down, i can not help but think of it as the time of me forgiving myself.
i really love pouring my heart out in writing because sometimes.. when words that coming from my mouth could hurt and my glance can not shows emotions, writing speaks volumes about what is inside my mind.
today is the last day of March. usually, i write down everything that happened on the last day of February to make sure that i remember things that happened immensely. but this year's been different.
on February 29th, something felt unfinished and it was not feels right to write down things on that day. turns out, March held onto February's memories, making them even more special.
it all started on the last day of February when two unexpected guests showed up at midnight with a birthday cake, it was Yusran and Karin. they came to celebrate my birthday, they said, to end February on a high note. it was a lovely way to close out the month, really.
and by today, i feel complete, i feel full.
looking back on February and March, i have learned to live in the moment—to feel everything: joy, sadness, anger, happiness, and gratitude.
by counting my blessings each day, i have realized how much goodness these two months have brought. and also the realisation of this proverb—after every storm, there's sunshine.
my aim for this year is actually simple: forgive myself and cherish those whose closest. because even on my worst days, the happiness of being surrounded by good people fills my heart. these two months will always hold a special place in my heart, not just for now, but for years to come. i will never forget when i went to work feeling happy, read that one novel from Matt Haig, met amazing people like Pak Ignasius Jonan, celebrated my birthday, and received that unexpected awards at work. this February and March was a whirlwind of joy—it fills by that warm late-night chats with Yusran and Karin, delicious ramen with Reno, attending a friend's wedding, spending quality time with Mama Papa Teteh Aa Kakak-kakak and also Eisha-Kyna, met Caca Sheila Tita Fira and Tiksi to reminisce things that happened back then in Uni and catch up on the current situation of our lives, Reno also accompanied me to watched the orchestra that i wanted to watch for a long time, i went to see city lights late at night, and even met Merry Riana at the airport. every tiny things that happened in these two months, again, fills my heart—from reading novels to enjoying delicious food, every moment was special.
i am so thankful for every single moment, and for the reminder that i can grow and be better every day, amidst of the mistakes that i have made some time ago—i know i deserve forgiveness, surely, from myself.
and again.. i came to a realisation that blessings are not just about money. my heart is full of gratitude for the people who have been by my side these past two months, reminding me to be kinder to myself and others.
the memories that i had in these past two months will stay with me, forever.
and hey.. wifa. it seems that i am starting to forgive you after all the things that you did. i believe we both will be okay.. like we used to. like we used to.

frazeološka enota dne: fant od fare (v vseh pogledih dober, lep moški). Kosmač uporabi tudi čeča od fare za dekle
izvor: v ostalih evropskih jezikih ni paralelnega izraza z enakimi sestavinami in pomenom. 'fara' ima tu pomen 'rod, pleme' (izposojenka iz langobardščine), torej 'fant z znanim poreklom'. 'fant' je izposojenka iz italijanščine (primerjaj npr. francosko 'enfant' ali angleško 'infant' - po romanski predlogi iz latinščine).
ime Genovefa tvorjeno podobno: keltsko 'geno' (rod, pleme) + germansko 'wifa' (ženska; primerjaj angleško 'wife').

fun fact* not friday with acorn
[pt. fun fact* not friday with acorn)
the reason we have wife and wives (f and v) and house and houses (first s sometimes pronounced like z) is apparently bc in old english they were allophones (could pronounce in different ways and be understood) intervocallicly or between voiced consonants
So 'wif' (wife) in the plural could be pronounced wifas or wivas
Evebtually wivas became more common... modern english wives
(I think i read this 2 days ago, may have forgor)
*according to wikipedia. i trust wikipedia, that line had a lot of sources but i did not check them [wanted quick and entertaining information about languages]

Arizona water agency to focus on big ideas to address shortage
Arizona water agency to focus on big ideas to address shortage
Arizona’s water financing agency should think big when it comes to the state’s hunt for new water supplies amid a persistent drought. That was the message from board members of the relaunched Water Infrastructure Finance Authority at its inaugural meeting Thursday. State lawmakers passed legislation in June making WIFA, which dates back to 1989 and which was part of the Arizona Finance Authority,…
