Brew #357: Wicklow Wolf Brewing Co. Summersalt Blackcurrant Gose

Abv: 4.9%

Aroma: Salt, straw, summer fruits

Pour: Rose tinged amber with bubbling down pinky white froth

Taste: Holy feck there’s some whack of salty fruit, a bit weird, lots of grass and straw immediately after it and a very light heat from the coriander. Ends on a mildly sweet tartness with aftertaste of faint blackcurrant.

Notes: 330ml can, blackcurrants, sea salt, ground coriander seeds

Brew #328: Wicklow Wolf Locavore Hop Harvest Dry Irish Stout

Abv: 5.5%

Served: Off the shelf

Aroma: Roasted malt, coffee,

Pour: Cola black with light tan bubbling froth that stays

Taste: Warm light chocolate bitters with malt and ash swirling around. Nice undercutting dryness and grainy, biscuit notes. Smooth oily mouth feel with soft carbonation and dry bite. Aftertaste is roast malt. A very solid stout, a lovely traditional flavour to it. Perfect off the shelf.

Notes: 440ml can, Athgarrett malt.

Brew #277: Wicklow Wolf Brewing Co. Arcadia Kölsch Style Lager

Abv: 4.5%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Herb, bread, light malt and honey

Pour: Clear gold with a white froth reducing to skim

Taste: Such a lovely crisp refreshing beer. Hints of citrus, dough and malt cut through with a light dry finish. Beautiful.

Notes: 500ml bottle.

Brew #276: Wicklow Wolf Brewing Co. The Sun Machine Meyer Lemon Wheat Ale

Abv: 6%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Fruit peel, slight malt, grass

Pour: Opaque light Amber with finger of white froth that stays

Taste: Mmm lemon cut with tart orange flavour, those Meyers. Nice bready mid wash with a swift dry kick at the finish. Aftertaste of lemonbitters. Medium carbonation. Something approaching gin in the flavour. Really nice brew.

Notes: 330ml can, Ltd Ed brew, malts - Munich/Lager, Meyer lemons, citrus peel, hops - Lemon Drop.

Brew #270: Wicklow Wolf Brewing Co. Bark and Bite Triple Hopped Imperial IPA

Abv: 9%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Treacle, melon, fruit

Pour: Cloudy brown with a finger of white froth that stays

Taste: Big sweet maltiness with honey mouth feel that descends into tropical melon and grapefruit notes. Light citrus and more sweetness with fruity hop burst. Huge caramel whack as it goes on but the tropical hops keep shining through. Nicely balanced and not too much fumes given the strength. Lovely supper. Be prepared for the big sweet malts though.

Brew #267: Wicklow Wolf Wildfire Hoppy Red Ale

Abv: 4.6%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Biscuit, nutty grass,

Pour: Deep auburn with big frothy tan head.

Taste: Lovely light malt biscuit with faint toffee cut through with a soft citrus fruit note. A subtle mix of hop and malt with the robust caramel character typical of red ale fully present. Very very nice. Carbonation is mild as is the bite with a pine-ish background. Aftertaste is light bitter and toffee.

Brew #205: Wicklow Wolf Brewing Co. Zoso Smash IPA

ABV: 5.2%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Tangerine, cedar, citrus

Pour: Cloudy ruddy brown with a tan froth reducing to skim

Taste: Lovely sweet tangerine upfront before the malt comes sweeping in with a toffee nosed background wash. Cuts back to the hoppy fruits at the finish with a decent dry bite too. Aftertaste of caramel and orange. I thought this was beautiful, like a hoppy red ale and right up my street.

Brew #184: Wicklow Wolf Brewing Co. Poles Apart North - Robust Hoppy Stout

ABV: 6.5%

Served: Off the shelf

Aroma: Honey, light cedar, caramel, malt, faint toffee apple

Pour: Cola black with tan froth reducing to skim

Taste: Sweet toffee up front with some fruit underneath running into a pine hop bite but overlaid with candied molasses. Nice finish and an aftertaste of sweet chocolate. This is a really well executed mesh of hop fruitiness and stouty toffee stickiness.

Brew #181: Wicklow Wolf Brewing Co. Poles Apart South - A White Crisp IPA

ABV: 5.6%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Melon, apricot, peach, faint citrus

Pour: Clear amber with white froth dissipating

Taste: Peach and orange cream all to the fore with faint grassy notes underneath. A nice hoppy bite kicks in and there’s a good bitter finish with an aftertaste of tangerine. This is a great, flavoursome IPA.

Brew #155: Wicklow Wolf Brewing Company Arcadia Kölsch

ABV: 4.5%

Served: Growler, from the fridge

Aroma: Honey, wheat, light spruce, bread

Pour: Clear yellow gold with big white froth reducing to a finger

Taste: Sweetness and malt on the wash running into a citrus middle but finishing on a crisp lager bite. Lovely fresh brew with notes of grass and doughy bread. All that yeast shines through and the crisp cold lager finish is perfect. Kudos.

Notes: 1 litre Growler filled on tap at Supervalu Kilbarry, Waterford.

ABV: 5.7%

Served: From the fridge

Aroma: Pine, fruity notes

Pour: Clear yellow amber with a finger of white froth

Taste: Creamy froth with a fruit punch wash upfront, orange and passionfruit with an undertone of toffee cream. Finishes on a citrus and pine bite with it lingering in the aftertaste. Lovely balance and a fitting celebratory brew.

Brew #116: Wicklow Wolf Brewing Co. A Beer Called Rwanda (Roast Coffee Brown Ale)

ABV: 5.1%

Served: Off the shelf

Aroma: Floral hops, coffee

Pour: Red wine brown, clear with a finger of tan froth

Taste: Beautiful toasted nut and burnt coffee all upfront evening out to a sweetish toffee before ending on rich malty bite. Lovely easy drinking ale.

Notes: 500ml bottle, collaboration brew with Java Republic

Brew #113: Wicklow Wolf Brewing Co. Solar Eclipse Saison

ABV: 6.5%

Served: From a short stop in the fridge

Aroma: Orange, coriander

Pour: Amber tinted brown, clear with a tan skim

Taste: Malt and herb wash with a creamy undertone. Second wave of spice and biscuit with a slightly crisp bite at the finish. Nice swinging pendulum of flavour from herby hops to biscuity makts. The mandarin orange comes through in the aroma but not so much on the tongue. There’s a warm spicy aftertaste making this a delicious sup.
