#wiccan young avengers cosplay

Felt like cleaning up and reposting some old cosplay photos. These are all from around 2015, and the costume is more closely based on Young Avengers volume 1. My original and slightly more mature design can be seen here.

This character has been close to my heart for a very long time-- as a person of Romani descent, and as a gay kid growing up in the 2000s, the fact that one of the most groundbreaking gay characters in comics shared this aspect of my heritage, even in an abstract form, really meant a lot to me. I am genuinely quite sad that Billy has been adapted into the M C U with both his Jewish identity and Roma heritage erased. I also feel like this version of the character hews very closely to my own style and gender expression, and it's frustrating to see that this can only be represented at the expense of racial and cultural authenticity.

Wiccan (Young Avengers)

Wiccan altered his costume, wearing a light off-blue with a starry space design running the lengths of his sides and his arms, with red lining tracing most of the suit. His red cape now came with a hood, hiding his face but leaving his now glowing eyes visible.

have you ever drawn Captain America? (or marvel in general)

I have drawn some Xmen, and I like Magneto, Xavier, and Nightcrawler. I also was a fan of the young Avengers So I've drawn some of Wiccan. I never really got into the original Advengers so I don't think I've ever drawn Captain America. I HAVE drawn Alfred from Hetalia in a Captain America cosplay but I doubt that's what you're looking for lol.

𝚃𝚑𝚎 𝚈𝚘𝚞𝚗𝚐 𝙰𝚟𝚎𝚗𝚐𝚎𝚛𝚜

a new superheroteam graced new york city three years ago on this day. the team took care of any minor super villain threats hitting the city so often under attack! read about the team, its members, and their history since their formation below!

the date is december 30th, 2021 when a ragtag group of heros bust their way into a wealthy church wedding being held hostage. scaring the criminals, and continuing to chase them as the assailants run away. the team, at this time was missing three of its six members. but not long after this event, 2 more of its current members joined this team, both of which being the only women.

the public looked towards the avengers organization for an explanation on the team, already giving this group of kids a name “the young avengers”. the avengers organization denied any involvement in this team and guaranteed they would look into and investigate these occurrences.

before the avengers could provide an explanation their final member joined the young avengers, a young man with white hair. by this point the team had bagged a big deal of a villain ensuring the teens a new space in the avengers organization as well as their tower. ranging from ages 14-17 at this time, the members continued their work for exactly three years to this date. collecting bank robbers, all the way to super villains, weekly. even helping the avengers and x-men in world shaking events.

as the children aged into young adults they shared their identities with the public, as most of the heros within the avengers organization have. the young heros only asked for respect and privacy as they go about their daily lives. some of the heros in the group have dated, or have been dating since the start of the group. their love lives becoming a popular magazine headline as their identities were shared. and other hero’s go to school, juggling studies and a heavy responsibility. while the names of these hero’s are shared much is still hidden from the public for the safety of the team members themselves and anyone they may be close with.

he’s a strong force with a intense sense of justice. he feels he needs to be a hero, sometimes with a detriment to himself. has learned to take it easy over the years. now he leads the team with safety of everyone, his teammates, and himself in mind. loves boxing, martial arts, and swimming. also loves music, journaling, and has newly taken up drawing. istj. 2w1. in a sort of situationship with kate bishop.

I do kind of feel like the narrative should do more to establish that Billy is going to be Wanda's successor- that's definitely what we're meant to infer, both from him inheriting her powers and the reveal of Scarlet Witch being a family title- but pretty much every time we get a look at Distant Future Billy, he's always taking after Stephen instead, both visually and title-wise.

It wouldn't bother me as much if it weren't for the fact that current Billy clearly likes being associated with Wanda and the idea of continuing her legacy, and he doesn't hang out with Stephen all that often. He wasn't even in Strange Academy. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see them bond, but that hasn't really happened outside of that one issue of New Avengers back in 2009.

I'm not sure why Billy would be in Strange Academy, unless it was in a role similar to Nico's, which... I mean, I'm glad she had something going on after Runaways ended, but I cannot think of anybody less qualified to teach. Maybe the two of them could've been TAs, or maybe Jericho could've let them audit some classes to round out their magical training since they're both too old to enroll. But if I had to guess, I'd say Empyre was probably on the docket when SA was being planned out. Not that characters can't be in multiple places at once-- or that it's difficult for Billy to travel between Earth and the Alliance-- but that was a big event and a big status-quo change for him.

There are two versions of Future-Billy-As-Sorcerer-Supreme. One is from a the single-issue special Avengers: The Children's Crusade: Young Avengers-- and yes, that is a horribly confusing title that also makes this issue really hard to look up. This guy dresses just like Stephen and literally calls himself "Doctor Strange." He appears opposite Tommy as "Quicksilver," Teddy as "Captain Marvel," and Eli as "Captain America." Everyone's leaning into their actual legacies, and then there's Billy, cosplaying some guy he couldn't be less related to.

The other version, who has appeared in far more comics, was introduced in a 2013 X-Men event called Battle of the Atom. This guy is both Sorcerer Supreme and a member-- sometimes leader-- of the X-Men. This story was written a couple years before the Axis retcon, when the character was still ostensibly a mutant. There a few different versions of this character from a few different timelines, but he always goes by "Wiccan," and even though his costume contains references to classic Doctor Strange designs, it's still uniquely his.

Both of these future versions of Billy were created well before "Scarlet Witch" was retroactively established as a hereditary title. I don't know if things would be different if that was a part of Billy's lore from the get-go-- I think, for both silly gender reasons and a general desire to give Billy a unique identity, most writers would still avoid calling him "Scarlet Witch," but I think it'd be nice to see him take up the mantle in one or two alternate timelines. Certainly if Tommy's going to become Quicksilver....

Cosplaying my favorite gay Jewish fanboy today for my birthday

They'd dress as Wiccan (Billy Kaplan) and Hulkling (Teddy Altman) from the Young Avengers.

The comics were even coming out at the time Glee was set and while the first kiss shown between Wiccan and Hulkling (in Avengers: The Children's Crusade Vol 1 #9) happened ~march 2012 - so Kurt's senior year of McKinley - the comic run started in, like, late 2010 and while Wiccan and Hulkling take ages to kiss in print they're still obviously a couple/crushing on each other throughout the run.

(this is from a different comic run but still. i couldn't find a good version of them in costume together from the Children's Crusade comics - also while fighting Hulkling is usually green with wings, and their outfits are a bit different in the Children's crusade comics)

Also also I feel like Sam would have been a huge fan of the two as the first gay couple in marvel comics (I think???) as well as them being his age and huge avengers fanboys themselves (seriously Billy is a nerd of high proportions)
