2 - Vampire Print Original . . Ok, vampires are my FAVORITE but I never seem to be able to get them quite right. So much to the point that I think I avoid them art-wise, so this time around I tried to focus more on narrative and tension, anything but the actual creature, and I like how it came out! (Also, give me your favorite vampire lore/story/franchise. I used to be an absolute nut for Vampire Hunter D and to this day Yoshitaka Amano continues to be one of my favorite artists of all time and probably has had the most influence on my art style :D )

31 - Orchard . . FINISHED. I want to do a separate post addressing Whynoctober 2019 as a whole, but I will say that I am the most proud of the body of work from this year out of all October art challenges that I’ve done so far. I wanted to revisit some of the challenges that I tried over the course of the month - light and shadow, plants, dense patterns, depth and off center compositions. Probably more than I should have attempted on a deadline and it had some ups and downs for sure but I’m satisfied with it as a finale! More enthusiastic and insightful post a little later today - I’m going to take a rest 😴

27 - Cracked . . me looking at a barrelfull of lip balm knowing that winter is coming and soon my face will start peeling off . . I need more excuses to paint/draw extreme and contorted facial expressions! I love a solemn serious gaze but I didn’t realize how boring it can get, this was crazy fun (also forces you to think about the muscles and bones in the head and face in entirely new ways)

Trying to get back in the groove, with another silly bit of Touhou yuri. Day 22: “Smolder” and “Ghost.”

…and then Yuyuko made sure dinner took, like, hours.

For Day 16, back to Touhou. This one turned out fun, I think.

29 - Extra-dimensional . . I knew this was going to be a challenging one when I was making the list this year and as predicted I was royally stumped for an idea. I still feel a little stumped for an idea but there were a few different things I was thinking about while painting this - black holes, passage of time, the light spectrum. I don’t really know ultimately what’s going on with this image but I am happy with the result, and I had a lot of fun playing with colors! (It's a lot more bright and a wider color range in person, Instagrams been making all my pictures look so gray, yuck).

15 - Whisper . . Not much to say about this one, I like it! I’m still trying to catch up which will probably won’t happen until the weekend.

24 - Nails . . No sketches to show because pretty much no planning on this one. After finishing I have a general sense of what I think is being conveyed here but I’m very curious to hear your interpretations of it 😂

[SOLD] 10 - Séance . . It's still October 10th somewhere! This was one of those funny days where I had zero ideas, and even after getting a general direction I really didn't want to paint today. The result I think is one of my favorites so far. I thought it might be interesting too to show a couple of my preliminary sketches, which are pretty bare bones but do help the thought process. They're backwards chronologically - the first is the completed painting, second is the refined composition plan sketch from earlier today, and the last was the scribble to remember the idea last night.

9 - Dusk . . Missed my deadline by barely a minute! I wanted to get that warm diffused glow of approaching nightfall. I don't think I got it or the composition quite right but I did try some new colors that I'm pretty much infatuated with now.

And back to form with Day 7. Mamizou came out somehow looking a little like actor Donald Sutherland to me...? Which I guess is okay.

21 - Exhume . . Over the summer I got on a real Nirvana kick and I especially loved the Unplugged album, and since then I’ve really been wanting to do a painting inspired by Kurt’s cover of “Where Did You Sleep Last Night.” It makes me so sad and gives me chills. This isn’t the painting that I have in mind per se but I would consider a preliminary.

30 - Frostbite . . I think I’m getting better at botanical shapes, especially more complicated spans that fill space.  I used to get bored pretty much right away but now sometimes its kind of pleasant, because it is kind of like painting patterns. Once you find the “system” you kind of don’t have to think about it anymore. I liked painting this one - I wanted to keep it kind of loose with but with contrasts of soft and hard textures.
