Best School Day Everrrrr!

It snowed. Not enough to close the school (how is this good for a teacher you ask?) but we got a decent amount at lunchtime, and thank god my new school isn’t as uptight as my old one: they actually let the kids play outside in the snow! Then after lunch, we got TONS! So we managed to get through the last lesson and the majority of year 5 and 6 had a snowball fight outside their classrooms as soon as school finished - no way was I missed out! So out I went, got pelted by endless snowballs, slipped and fell on my bum! SO MUCH FUNNNNN

Turned out I cut my hand open but didn’t realise as they were numb, only noticed a while after I went in by which point blood was running down my wrist and all over my cardigan, so a t.a had to patch me up XD

Anyway, being a giant kid is awesome and kids > adults nearly always.

Go into teaching kiddies, I can’t recommend it enough :)

Still Reeling (In a Good Way!)

When I first started at my school, I was told that after my first year I would be an advisor for a small group of kids.  As the first day of my second year loomed closer, I freaked about being a good advisor and what the heck that even meant.  Someone explained it to me as “being another parent to the kid – a school time parent – an advocate for a kid when they most need it”.  At least, that is what I remember hearing.  I don’t listen too well and any time I was poetic about being a school parent, people look confused.

Anyway, I really took it to heart.  My first year advising was rough, but after that I had a good idea about what to do.  I fussed and fumed and argued and hugged the kids.  I helped some kids stay strong through bullying, some advisees deal with school related phobias, and even some kids who needed an adult to push for mental health support beyond what I could offer. I stayed late, had regular phone calls with parents, and kept a supply of “advisory candy” for those afternoons when we just couldn’t even.

And it has worked out so far.  Parents are happy with me, my kids are the greatest kids ever, and I just feel like things are going right.  And then an advisee from last year came to visit.  I fawned over her summer style changes and how much more grown up she looked.  We got nostalgic as I explained that my new advisory didn’t have the pizza pocket addition and morning bagel trades that hers did all the time.  I was just about to head back to the job they pay me for when she looked me in the eye and said “Ms. C.  I really want to thank you for all that you’ve done.  I don’t think I realized how much you cared, but I see it now.  You are amazing.”  

That.  That is why I teach.  That is why I work hard.  That is why I want to do better.

Also, I wish my current advisory would get on the pizza pocket thing because that was boss.
