r.e.s.c.u.e ❤️Loijipu❤️ came to us when he was only two days old. In June, he began his re-introduction to the wild. This amazing video captured some of his time at the sanctuary and gives you a little insight into why we all adore him so much. He is still being cared for by a Reteti team, just at another sanctuary where he will complete his transition to the wild. Happy Friday, everyone! The 3 Amigos!!❤️ @sheldricktrust Even as a young elephant, Sagala has always had her friends’ backs. Three years on and one graduation later, not much has changed — as you can see between the first photo, taken at our Nursery in 2017, and the second photo squeezing her pal Emoli, snapped just recently at our Voi Reintegration Unit! When we rescued Sagala in September 2017, Tsavo was in the grips of a terrible drought. She was found all alone, with a pack of lions waiting perilously nearby. Now, Sagala is four years old and working her way back to a life in the wild at our Voi Reintegration Unit. Kenya’s wildlife heritage is second to none, but many of our country’s children have never seen an elephants or any of its other iconic creatures in real life. These are our next generation of conservationists, and it’s vital that we help them feel connected to their wild world. So, every year, we invite more than 24,000 local schoolchildren to our Nairobi Nursery. They get to meet the orphans we’re caring for, learn their stories, and be inspired and educated by our Keepers. ❤️#trunkupwines ・・・ Pokot receives some love from one of the keepers at Reteti, which is also Africa's first community owned and operated elephant sanctuary. Pokot was found in Turkana on Northern Rangelands Trust's Pello Conservancy, a victim of the drought. After days of intensive care, the exciting signs of playfulness started to emerge, showing that he was making a recovery and getting his spirit back. Today, he's a beloved little bull at Reteti. ❤️ #bekindtoelephants #trunkupwines ・・・ Siku may be just a baby, by already she’s right in step with the rest of her herd! • This pint-sized girl is our 28th confirmed “grandcalf.” We rescued her mother, Sunyei, when she fell into a mannade hole as a tiny 10-day-old. After spending years in our care, Sunyei eventually returned to a life in the wild and we are thrilled to see her enter this new stage of life as a mum. More amazing work! #trunkupwines ❤️ #dswt ・・・ How do you quickly transport a baby elephant across Kenya? Our new helicopter has provided a speedy solution to this logistical hurdle! The helicopter couldn’t have come at a better time. Timely treatment can make the difference between life and death for an orphaned elephant, especially in the case of all our recent drought victims. Emoli, pictured here, was one of the helicopter’s first passengers back in August — and it was a rapid rescue that saved the starving calf’s life. #trunkupwines ❤️ ・・・ And the mystery baby from our earlier post is… Sattao! Sattao had a tough start to the year – we rescued him in March, after he was found wandering alone, dangerously thin and covered in bite marks – but now his future is looking bright. He settled right in at the Nursery and enjoys being thoroughly spoiled Tagwa and the other older girls. When he got stuck during a recent mud bath, Tagwa and Malkia rushed to help him out in an impressively coordinated effort. They then proceeded to thwart his repeated attempts to sneak back to the mud pool, much to the little bull’s annoyance.
