⛓️‍💥 how (and why) seventeen failed at gatekeeping you.

seungcheol posts a photo of you on weverse. it's simple enough: a picture of you across the table from him, smiling over a dinner date. the only caption is a single red heart emoji. the photo choice is intentional. he chose one where your face is clear and your identity is unmistakable, because he'll be damned if any other guy tries to hit you up when you're spoken for.

jeonghan falls into the rabbit hole of couple items. it starts with the phone cases, but it doesn't end there. clothes of the same style. shoes from the same brand. he swears he's not playing relationship olympics; it's just so clear to him that the two of you are the it couple. anybody who says otherwise can talk to your matching luxury bags, thank you very much.

joshua misses the fact that he hadn't switched instagram accounts. he has two: his work-sanctioned one, and the one where he keeps up with everybody that matters. the boys call it his 'shrine' for you, because that's where he actually keeps log of your little dates. until he accidentally posts it to his main. where's that damn delete button, and why is it so elusive?

junhui is on a roll during an interview. he's in a chatty mood, and he's feeling a little loose-lipped. when the interviewer cleverly asks about his love life— phrasing it like they already know he has one— jun is trapped. hook, line, sinker. he happily yaps about you, only to realize much later that may have not been the move. too late. the interview's already live.

soonyoung should have known that alcohol and a media engagement would not be a good combination. he had begged the producers to cut the footage out, but, alas; it was the most clickbait-y part of the video. how could they? now, everybody knows soonyoung can rant about how much he loves you for upwards of twenty minutes.

wonwoo isn't aware he was supposed to be gatekeeping you. one fine day, he drops a carousel of photos on his photography account. you're partially visible in some of them— the side of your face, the curve of your side, the flash of your grin. the two of you had been on vacation. the account is his archive, anyway; everyone else's opinion be damned. he wants to remember you like this.

it's not a name drop, but it's a close thing. jihoon's never been the type to declare things on sns, so he does it in the way that he knows. a throwaway lyric. an entire song. fine, maybe a mini-album. he could have an entire discography solely about you, if he's being honest. people can guess all they want. if you're immortalize in his song, then jihoon's job is done.

from the very beginning, seokmin has wanted to scream you off the rooftops. he holds back because he knows the consequences of going public. he can't resist it, though, and he eventually sneaks a photo or two into a photo carousel. he gets giddy at perfecting the soft launch, at nailing the art of perfectly-cropped photos and choice songs. it scratches that itch of his— the urge to have everybody know about you, while also keeping you to himself.

you and mingyu show up at fashion week, immaculately dressed from head to toe. talk about a hard launch! he giggles as he answers questions from interviewers. it's clear to everybody that he's absolutely smitten. there are literal models in front of him, and he's looking at you like you beat them out any day. he never really liked these types of events, but if he gets to have you at his side, looking like the goddess that you are— well. he might have to start responding to a couple more invites.

minghao shocks the entertainment industry with a well-worded essay on weibo about the importance of valuing an idol's private relationships. in true minghao fashion, he makes it abundantly clear how important boundaries are to him. buried underneath that is the confirmation that he is dating, yes, and that it's a part of his life he'll stake his career to defend. this is just his job, but loving you is part of his life.

seungkwan's cover of a western love song has fans swooning, but a dedication buried in the description of the youtube video has everybody flabbergasted. 'dedicated to my girl,' it simply says. no explanation. no name drop. seungkwan has a girl, and that's that. he accepts your wrath; he knows you'll secretly enjoy reading the absurd speculation with him. chaos is fun in moderation, and this is one of the ways seungkwan likes to poke the bear.

it's a series of unfortunate events for vernon. he posts a mirror selfie of himself— a rare one!— without knowing anyone can zoom in and see you on his bed, (thankfully) fully clothed but definitely looking very comfortable. like you belong there. he takes a long nap after, missing dozens of calls and waking up to hundreds of texts. oh, well. you were going to have to go public one day, anyway.

your privacy might have lasted if chan wasn't so damn obvious whenever the two of you were out and about. even on your most discreet dates, chan looks a little too happy to just be hanging out with a friend. the paparazzi catches wind. the final nail on the coffin is a close-up stolen photo of chan's lockscreen: a selfie of him planting a big, fat kiss on your cheek.

Thirteen: Dude, what the hell is wrong with you?

Solomon: I think it has to do with MC's little "vacation" with Diavolo.

Thirteen: When did THIS happen?

MC: We just got back from it. Diavolo needed some time away after the Kingsblood Crucible and invited me to go with him.

Barbatos: *string of rolling eye emojis*

Thirteen: OH!

Thirteen: Are you JEALOUS, Barbs?

Barbatos: Don't call me Barbs.

Barbatos: And I'm not jealous of them taking a break. The prince is still young and doesn't feel as tied to the castle as I do.

Solomon: Except it's not the fact that they took a break, but rather WHAT they did during it that has you upset.

MC: So THAT's why you smelt like a bottle of perfume got dumped all over you. Asmo's quite flowery.

Barbatos: Listen, I don't know how I've might have reacted in their time. Perhaps I'd be a lot calmer. Maybe have more control over my emotions.

Barbatos: I apologize, MC, but there's a large part of me that feels like you should be mine and mine alone. Our own little escapade has only intensified these feelings towards you, and I really have no idea why.

Solomon: It's their innocence.

MC: Seriously, Solomon?

Solomon: What? I'm merely answering his question.

Solomon: To a certain extent, each of us is drawn to it, and when we finally get a taste...well, one serving isn't NEARLY enough. We want more. And more. And more.

MC: *a string of blushing emojis*

Thirteen: Is this a thing back home?

Solomon: Yes.

Solomon: And we're so good that it's made MC crazy for us, too.

MC: Solomon.

the second your finger hovered over jaehyun’s contact name, you knew it was him. it had always be him. every single touch against your skin, each comfortable silence you had with him, and better yet, every moment you shared with him when he took you to the aquarium.

it had been there since the beginning, yet you failed to realize it. maybe it was your stupid mind playing tricks on you, convincing you that there was something much more to him that wasn’t worth knowing. but you were better than this, you knew what you want, and it was him.

you didn’t hesitate a second longer, clicking on the call button. everything you wanted to tell jaehyun flooded through your mind as you listened to it ring multiple times. there was hope he’d pick up quickly, but there was also a fear that your call would go unanswered. he proved you wrong this time around, as you heard a faint hello from the other line.

“jaehyun i–” you pause your words, taking a deep breath to collect yourself.

“hi again, y/n! did you leave something in my car, is everything alright?” he was happy to hear from you, but he was still worried after you didn’t sound so jolly greeting him.

“can you come to the race track? at the spot where we met for the first time? please?” it was almost like you were begging him, though you knew that you didn’t have to plead at his feet for him to drop everything for you.

“no, yeah! i’ll go over right now, just stay put.” 

leaning back against the wall, you let yourself drag down it once again. it all became very similar, merging with the memory you had when you first met jaehyun and woonhak. now you were stuck between them, finally making the decision that you felt was right.

jaehyun was the first person to notice you going off, despite being so busy with everything else around him. he graciously invited you back to the track so you wouldn’t be bored, and most likely wallowing in your own self pity. in a way, he understood that all you needed was a proper distraction, one where you couldn’t look away.

and he had it down perfectly, as he shone so bright that it was impossible to look away, yet hurt your eyes if you stared too intently. maybe this was how he always was, and that was only the cherry on top, making everything much more real.

in the silence of the night, you could hear a car pulling up into the parking lot. a car door slammed, followed by the sound of jogging against pavement. you were counting down the seconds, counting down every moment before you’d finally tell jaehyun the sweet words. that trigger to let him know that you wanted to grow with him, and be his.

when his eyes landed on you, his gaze immediately softened. you weren’t crying, just sitting contently in the spot he found you weeks ago. you looked up at him through your eyelashes, the smallest smile playing against your lips.

“y/n? why are you on the floor again? and here..?” he felt confused, sitting down next to you to get his answers.

“i was thinking about it a lot. about us, jae.. i wasn’t sure if i was ever going to be able to love again.” you mumbled, fiddling with your fingers.

“what are you talking about..?” he knew exactly what you were talking about.

“i looked bored that day and– you came to me. for whatever reason you had, or whatever tensions underlie, you still came to me.” you spoke, “and when we went out, i can’t even explain to you how much fun i had.”

“of course i came to you, y/n.” he responded, moving a small piece of hair away from your face.

“i don’t know if i’ll ever be able to understand why. maybe you just thought i was cute, but it meant a lot to me. nobody has made that effort to care for me like that.”

“i’m not going to lie and say i didn’t come to you for no reason, because i did think you were cute. but i got something so much better than just a cute girl.” 

“so if i was super ugly you’d leave me to shit?” you let out a breathy laugh, as he sighs.

“i have no room to comment on that.” he puts his hands up to defend himself.

“god, i feel at a loss for words. but i hope you understand where i’m trying to get my point to..?” you tilt your head at him, the air feeling much lighter after the laugh you shared.

“i like you, you like me, and we should totally kiss?” he raises an eyebrow as you roll your eyes.

“you’re so stupidly clingy, jae.” you put your hands up to his cheeks, pulling him close to your lips to close the gap between the two of you.

it took him by surprise, still not quite believing any of this was real. but he kissed back, and it was. his lips were warm, sending shocks throughout your entire body. the longer you stayed attached to him, the more you didn’t want to let go.

you bit down gently on his bottom lip before pulling away, making jaehyun pout. he was cute like this, and the only thing it did was reassure your decision to be with him. reaching your arms around his waist, you hug him close to you.

“you know, if you weren’t so smooth with asking me out that day, i probably would’ve still been beating myself up about that guy. i can’t believe i let him run my life for so long..” you mumble.

“hey, you’re here now, aren’t you? better yet, in my arms!” he squeezes you, almost taking the air out of your body.

“jae, jae, let go!” you gasp, only making him squeeze tighter before letting go.

“you still haven’t made anything official.” he furrows his eyebrows.

“i don’t think we’ll be official for some time, jae. there’s no way i’m going to hurt you if i’m still going crazy or something. let’s take some time to grow together before we label anything?” you ask, only getting a nod in reply, “don’t worry. i choose you.”

“can i use vine whip to get you back in my arms?”

I was tagged by @simpledontmeanpeachy. Figured I'd do this for fun.

1. How many works do you have on AO3?

Oof. I've written eight at this point. Oof.

2. What’s your total A03 word count?

As of December 16, 2023... 546,575. Most of it in the last two years.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

In my A03 life, I've written for Hannibal (NBC-centric Hannigram) and the CW Arrowverse. Mostly ColdFlash, but that's not where I started! I segued into Sladiver for a bit.

4. What are your top five fics by kudos?

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

Oh, absolutely! I love hearing what my readers think. If it's a long comment, I'll do my best to respond in kind without giving away too much of what's coming next. But even if it's just emojis or an "I love this", I will at the very least say thank you. I am grateful for whatever way you choose to express your thoughts about what you've read, and it certainly helps keep me motivated!

6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Ooooof. Okay, considering it's also my only story on indefinite hiatus, it's Strongholds of the Mind. I wasn't in a good headspace at the time to deal with writing ansty!betrayed!Oliver properly. If we're talking completed fics, does When Lightning Hits Ice count? But there is a sequel and the other one-shots connected to it in my Sparks in the Ice series.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Hmmm... That has to be Perspective: A Regency Romance. After all, it's based off a Jane Austen novel and you cannot fault a good romantic and economical happy ending. :D

8. Do you get hate on your fic?

No. But I have had one nagging misunderstanding. And I simply refuse to engage with it.

9. Do you write smut?

Oh, yes, baby, fuck yes~! You guys can tell me if you like the way I do it or not.

10. Do you write crossovers?

Hmmm... Closest I've gotten is Perspective: A Regency Romance. Or basing OCs in my works on characters from other series. If you can guess who Mike and Avigail Birnbaum are loosely based of, kudos to you!

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Really? See, this is why I prefer to play around with the canon universes. I worry enough about my original writing staying safe.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Not as of yet! It's a dauntless task on a good day, and this is FANdom. Translating involves so much more work beyond a a direct substitution like "what is the word for 'apple' in XYZ language?"

13. Have you ever co-written a fic?

No, but I have been seduced inspired into writing particular scenes by the highly skilled artist @hardwiredweird.

14. What‘s your all-time favourite ship?

To write? ColdFlash. Just because it's pushing all the right buttons for me at this point and honestly, I've got entirely too many thoughts about the state of linked TV series writing NOT to. But I devour Hannigram and other similar (okay, not quite similar) pairings when I don't have the bandwith for writing or I'm in transit and a physical book would be out of the question.

15. What’s the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I could wax determinedly about my three-year-plan to finish Strongholds of the Mind, but I don't really know if I will. Will I probably hint at Sladiver in my other works? Maybe. But I don't know if it's healthy for me to be in Oliver Queen's head at that stage in the narrative. Leonard Snart's is all rainbows and unicorns by compare, in my books. And Hannibal Lecter. He's fine, like the finest of wines. What does that say about me?

16. What’s your writing strengths?

Foremost, I think it's my planning and plotting. There's a time and place for instant gratification, and while I do sprinkle that in, I'm in things for the long haul lately. I don't get distracted from a project easily, either. I do have a few ideas bouncing around at any given point, but I like letting them percolate for a while so I can both work on my current one satisfactorily and give the floaty ideas time to concretize into something worth writing. After that, I think it's my characterization, if only because I'm willing to ask the disturbing, uncomfortable questions of perfect strangers and do the most idiotic and crazy things to get the experience to make things as real as possible. I'm thorough. I won't release a chapter until I'm sure that I've written well past it and it still ties in together correctly.

Something I've also been told repeatedly that I do well, so I've become quite conscious of ensuring it, is cinematic writing. I want readers to be able to "see" what's going on. I'm actually constantly studying ways to make scenes come alive that way these days.

17. What’s your writing weaknesses?

Doubts. I sometimes finish a chapter or a piece and I'm suddenly struck with the horiffying thought I've fucked up bigtime or, more often, I've missed something important... which, let's be real, you can go back and fix in A03-land or your word processor. But the doubt persists, and that is an enternal issue I'm still working through.

On a more technical note, I am in absolute agony when I write group scenes—so I force myself to keep doing them. It's hard enough to balance dialogue without the tags, with enough intent, meaning, etc. Add in three or more extra people, and it's a game of keeping track of everyone and still making the scenes seem natural. Also, as a lot of M/M or F/F shippers must feel, it's a fun trip when you're using the same pronouns for both parts of a couple, isn't it? As an extension of that, I'm pushing myself to work with ensemble casts, as readers of my Sparks in the Ice series may have noticed. It's lovely for my writing practice, so I'm gunna keep at it till I can tick this off my to study list. I don't think there's any part of writing I find particularly easy, even if I've listed it as a strength. I've been stumped for hours or days on scenes that I don't have any exact frame of reference for.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I'm mostly comfortable with it. I do it in both my fanfiction and my original work. English is my first language, but I'm semi-fluent in two others, passably conversational in another, and currently baby-step learning a new one. I think it's a prerequisit for any Arrowverse scene that involves Hartley talking with Cisco and/or Eobard-Thawne-as-Harrison-Wells. For any language I'm not familiar with, I consult friends and the great wide interwebs.

But there's a caveat there. When you use languages that stray from the one most of the text is written in, there has to be a DAMNED good reason. If you can layer at least two reasons for this sentence/phrase to NOT be in English, consider it. If it's just for the sake of you, the writer, wanting to show off, skip it. At least, that's my personal rule. E.g. Hartley and Cisco talking: For Hartley, it's a refresher that he can speak these languages and, because of the choice of things he says, it reveals something of his snootiness and educational/cultural leanings. For Cisco, it's because he grew up bilingual to an extent, and his wording implies a casual, day-to-day useage in opposition to hifalutin Hart-speak.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Ohhhh... I don't recall, since I had a horribly long hiatus from writing in my teens, which I'm long past at this point. When I hit A03 in...2016, though, I ran headlong into Hannigram.

20. Favourite fic you’ve ever written?

Hmmm... I don't actually have one. I feel a sense of quiet achievement every time I finish a project, be it a chaptered fic or a one-shot. But I still have a LOT to say in my Sparks in the Ice series. I guess, in a way, that does make it a favorite, doesn't it?
