Hello! First, I wanted to say thank you for your post about updating software and such. I really appreciated your perspective as someone with ADHD. The way you described your experiences with software frustration was IDENTICAL to my experience, so your post made a lot of sense to me.

Second, (and I hope my question isn't bothering you lol) would you mind explaining why it's important to update/adopt the new software? Like, why isn't there an option that doesn't involve constantly adopting new things? I understand why they'd need to fix stuff like functional bugs/make it compatible with new tech, but is it really necessary to change the user side of things as well?

Sorry if those are stupid questions or they're A Lot for a tumblr rando to ask, I'd just really like to understand because I think it would make it easier to get myself to adopt new stuff if I understand why it's necessary, and the other folks I know that know about computers don't really seem to understand the experience.

A huge part of it is changing technologies and changing norms; I brought up Windows 8 in that other post and Win8 is a *great* example of user experience changing to match hardware, just in a situation that was an enormous mismatch with the market.

Win8's much-beloathed tiles came about because Microsoft seemed to be anticipating a massive pivot to tablet PCs in nearly all applications. The welcome screen was designed to be friendly to people who were using handheld touchscreens who could tap through various options, and it was meant to require more scrolling and less use of a keyboard.

But most people who the operating system went out to *didn't* have touchscreen tablets or laptops, they had a desktop computer with a mouse and a keyboard.

When that was released, it was Microsoft attempting to keep up with (or anticipate) market trends - they wanted something that was like "the iPad for Microsoft" so Windows 8 was meant to go with Microsoft Surface tablets.

We spent the first month of Win8's launch making it look like Windows 7 for our customers.

You can see the same thing with the centered taskbar on Windows 11; that's very clearly supposed to mimic the dock on apple computers (only you can't pin it anywhere but the bottom of the screen, which sucks).

Some of the visual changes are just trends and various companies trying to keep up with one another.

With software like Adobe I think it's probably based on customer data. The tool layout and the menu dropdowns are likely based on what people are actually looking for, and change based on what other tools people are using. That's likely true for most programs you use - the menu bar at the top of the screen in Word is populated with the options that people use the most; if a function you used to click on all the time is now buried, there's a possibility that people use it less these days for any number of reasons. (I'm currently being driven mildly insane by Teams moving the "attach file" button under a "more" menu instead of as an icon next to the "send message" button, and what this tells me is either that more users are putting emojis in their messages than attachments, or microsoft WANTS people to put more emojis than messages in their attachments).

But focusing on the operating system, since that's the big one:

The thing about OSs is that you interact with them so frequently that any little change seems massive and you get REALLY frustrated when you have to deal with that, but version-to-version most OSs don't change all that much visually and they also don't get released all that frequently. I've been working with windows machines for twelve years and in that time the only OSs that Microsoft has released were 8, 10, and 11. That's only about one OS every four years, which just is not that many. There was a big visual change in the interface between 7 and 8 (and 8 and 8.1, which is more of a 'panicked backing away' than a full release), but otherwise, realistically, Windows 11 still looks a lot like XP.

The second one is a screenshot of my actual computer. The only change I've made to the display is to pin the taskbar to the left side instead of keeping it centered and to fuck around a bit with the colors in the display customization. I haven't added any plugins or tools to get it to look different.

This is actually a pretty good demonstration of things changing based on user behavior too - XP didn't come with a search field in the task bar or the start menu, but later versions of Windows OSs did, because users had gotten used to searching things more in their phones and browsers, so then they learned to search things on their computers.

There are definitely nefarious reasons that software manufacturers change their interfaces. Microsoft has included ads in home versions of their OS and pushed searches through the Microsoft store since Windows 10, as one example. That's shitty and I think it's worthwhile to find the time to shut that down (and to kill various assistants and background tools and stop a lot of stuff that runs at startup).

But if you didn't have any changes, you wouldn't have any changes. I think it's handy to have a search field in the taskbar. I find "settings" (which is newer than control panel) easier to navigate than "control panel." Some of the stuff that got added over time is *good* from a user perspective - you can see that there's a little stopwatch pinned at the bottom of my screen; that's a tool I use daily that wasn't included in previous versions of the OS. I'm glad it got added, even if I'm kind of bummed that my Windows OS doesn't come with Spider Solitaire anymore.

One thing that's helpful to think about when considering software is that nobody *wants* to make clunky, unusable software. People want their software to run well, with few problems, and they want users to like it so that they don't call corporate and kick up a fuss.

When you see these kinds of changes to the user experience, it often reflects something that *you* may not want, but that is desirable to a *LOT* of other people. The primary example I can think of here is trackpad scrolling direction; at some point it became common for trackpads to scroll in the opposite direction that they used to; now the default direction is the one that feels wrong to me, because I grew up scrolling with a mouse, not a screen. People who grew up scrolling on a screen seem to feel that the new direction is a lot more intuitive, so it's the default. Thankfully, that's a setting that's easy to change, so it's a change that I make every time I come across it, but the change was made for a sensible reason, even if that reason was opaque to me at the time I stumbled across it and continues to irritate me to this day.

I don't know. I don't want to defend Windows all that much here because I fucking hate Microsoft and definitely prefer using Linux when I'm not at work or using programs that I don't have on Linux. But the thing is that you'll see changes with Linux releases as well.

I wouldn't mind finding a tool that made my desktop look 100% like Windows 95, that would be fun. But we'd probably all be really frustrated if there hadn't been any interface improvements changes since MS-DOS (and people have DEFINITELY been complaining about UX changes at least since then).

Like, I talk about this in terms of backward compatibility sometimes. A lot of people are frustrated that their old computers can't run new software well, and that new computers use so many resources. But the flipside of that is that pretty much nobody wants mobile internet to work the way that it did in 2004 or computers to act the way they did in 1984.

Like. People don't think about it much these days but the "windows" of the Windows Operating system represented a massive change to how people interacted with their computers that plenty of people hated and found unintuitive.

(also take some time to think about the little changes that have happened that you've appreciated or maybe didn't even notice. I used to hate the squiggly line under misspelled words but now I see the utility. Predictive text seems like new technology to me but it's really handy for a lot of people. Right clicking is a UX innovation. Sometimes you have to take the centered task bar in exchange for the built-in timer deck; sometimes you have to lose color-coded files in exchange for a right click.)

like look at his room, the floor tiles, the shelves, the desktop, his bed. dan heng to me comes across as the guy who doesn't sleep early. half the time, if you're up and walking around the cabin, trying to make tea or coffee or just get water, best believe half the time you'll be met with a "why are you still up?" or a "hey"

he'll sometimes invite you to his room where OK LETS IMAGINE his floors can be customized to whatever he wants. so sometimes when you enter his room, it'll be in the shades of blue, dark blue in fact, calm navy waves swirling below you as you take in the cool air that hits your face.

he'll have you wait by the side as he adjusts his pillows and all, then calling you over to sit beside him with your hot drink in hand. you'll talk about those trips that he didn't get to join in, the weird shower thoughts you have, his random thoughts, and sometimes, he'll even share his secrets because he puts his faith in you, much more that he had anticipated.

your talks would go on for hours and hours and it'll just end up being a sleepover. like it'll all start with a

"come, let's lay down and talk, my back's tired."

then suddenly you'll be faced with a soft smile on his face accompanied by half lidded eyes, and a "good morning."

and, you'll be standing in front of March 7 who has a big smile on her face and also a "good morning." already giggling at the sight of the two of you huddled together at the morning's coldness.

another scenario is that when he'll have nightmares of blade haunting him, reminding him of dan feng's sins. if he's ever woken up by those nightmares the night before, the night after he'll have his floors be set to those waves again, or something calming, a relaxing ambient type of setting like rain or the ocean again KSJDHF but! he'll play this song to set his mood before wrapping himself comfortably in his blankets, trying to fall asleep. he'll slowly release the tension around his feet, then legs, letting go of himself in each limb and all the way until he's fallen asleep.

These nights would be somewhat peaceful, ykno sometimes or some ppl, when they've been a night owl for quite some time, and they finally, FINALLY get that 10pm sleep and wake up at 7am??

YEA that's what happens to him during those nights, he'll wake up, feeling even more refreshed and energized, feeling as if he's taken a step forward, ready to start the day again.

can i share an ascended astarion headcanon with you. i personally think that in the very first few days or so (or more!) after ascending, his mind is probably swirling with everything that’s changed and he’s discovering new shit about himself and feeling actually powerful for the first time maybe ever and it’s just a lot, and that played a big part in him acting like an arrogant shithead towards tav. he got a taste of power n got too big for his britches. 1/2

i think i mostly agree with you but for a single (imo very important) caveat --

ascended astarion might be mask off (per neil; i have my own opinions on this), but as a character, he's playing into our knowledge of the dark, brooding vampire trope.

i definitely agree that time affects him (for better or worse)! and i think that would be something that would be really interesting to explore in fanwork. i think a tav consenting to become his spawn feeds his ego and further fractures his hold on "humanity" for lack of a better word.

that's why i think a mortal romancing an astarion who's ascended has so much more juice. he gains everything he thinks he wants in the ritual, but tav won't accept the greatest gift he can offer? that's humbling in a way that i think is really compelling.

I think these two would be a match made in heaven, cause they’re both just the softest littles.

Mick definitely regressed a bit older than Charles and takes on almost a big brother role? He LOVES reading stories to Charles and fetching Charles’s stuffies and will let Charles draw all over his pictures without any complaint. He loves his little brother so so much.

I also think that Mick really helps Charles relax? Charles struggles sometimes cause he knows he regresses quite small and he can be quite a handful, but Mick is just the sweetest and always makes him feel so safe.

And they’re both the best boys! They always listen to you and just want to be good boys for you, and they absolutely are. They just want love and attention and then they’re happy.

I actually think that Mick might regress more often than Charles? And Charles is, of course, more than happy to help you with little!Mick when he’s not regressed himself. Even when he’s not regressed, he’ll still happily colour with Mick and play with him. He loves little!Mick as much as you do.

When Charles does regress though, he tends to regress younger and for longer, so he’s actually more work than Mick when he’s little. Of course you don’t mind at all though, you love them both.

7. your preferred writing fonts

For the longest time it was Arial, then basically from Covid lockdowns to maybe about a year ago I was a Comic Sans truther. But recently I've been using Optima and Trebuchet! There is something very delightfully round about them... they are soft like bunnies.... Bonus points, they're a bit of larger, thicker fonts, which makes is much easier for me to read. I have no idea if I'm dyslexic because I've never been tested but reading--while fun and one of my favorite pass-times--is like. So hard. And it feels like the longer I've been out of Lit classes the harder and harder reading gets. :') I've got a mountain of fics and books I'd like to read but it takes a lot of energy to keep track of what line im on that i gotta save it all up for writing... ive had city of dogs open in a tab for like months now bro i just wanna read.... TAT

But yeah I love me them thicker rounder weighted sort of fonts.

9. start to finish, how long did it take you to write the last fic you posted?

so the last finished one-shot i posted was Who We Don't Expect to See, which took probably about six months to a year wrestling to get the dialogue to behave. The last complete multi-chapter fic was the Baristsa on Autumnal Avenue, which took about nine months!

As for unfinished works, I'm expecting Maelstrom to probably take another year , maybe year and a half at this pace! Ideally, I'd love to have it done by December which would mean a year and two months total, but we'll have to see thinking emoji

16. favorite place to write

I'm usually either at my desk in my office or on my couch lol and that's just a question of whether I feel more like writing on my desktop or my laptop! But since I started back at my local community college, I've found INSANE productivity at the campus cafe!! I don't know what it is, but as soon as my ass is sitting at the table with a coffee I'm like fucking sonic the hedgehog the way I start pumping chapters out. Probably about 80% of Maelstrom fic's been written in that little cafe!!

24. how do you recharge when you’re not feeling creative?

banging my head against the wall until im creative again :( or until i knock myself out, whichever comes first

actually lol I spend a lot of my recharge time watching youtube or playing video games. I'm big into Splatoon and Phasmophobia! I used to be really into Fall Guys until Epic bought the game out. but mostly it's just youtube these days lolll cause once im out of creative juice thats like. it. my energy's gone and i tend to spiral, so I'll end up just snuggling my kitty and watching gamegrumps or something (i dont know why, he just really likes watching game grumps)

Mostly through notes on my phone but also quite a bit of scribbled in the margins of my class notes haha

I use "Shenaniganary" a lot but also my friends and family get into so many antics so it's appropriate. Still figuring out how to put that in a poem eventually.

Nature, a lot of the times! or the Big Sad but those ones are less fun

I'm a big fan of rhyming couplets with iambic quadrameter which is oddly specific but it's the thing I find myself defaulting to it

watermelon - not as much a summer weather enjoyer bcs i get hot flashes but watermelon makes it worth it. it's one food that you can eat a lot of and feel satisfied but never too full for seconds. my dad taught me how to pick them too since he used to be a gardener and understood what makes the sweet ones grow.

coleslaw - but only the way my dad taught me how to make it, everyone who does it only with apple cider vinegar is wrong. everyone who makes it way too sweet is wrong. ur all wrong only my dad is right. i can legit eat an entire bag of slaw by myself just from coleslaw salad.

carolina style backribs - slow cooked for 4-5 hours with the sauce caramelized at the last minute...godddd there's literally nothing better. and sucking out the bone marrow from the bones too

fav color:

green - never seen a green that i didn't at least partially fw

red - used to be my #1 but im trying to cultivate a gentler spirit

black - looks good in most things and lots of different shades.

Hello hello!  The name’s Tulsa and I’m 25 years old and searching for some new writing partners!  I have over ten years writing experience and have done a bit of freelance writing on the side as well.  As for my writing, I can easily write around two paragraphs, but if the scene calls for it I can go 3-5, it just depends.  I do prefer rapid replies around two paras, but this is in no way a dealbreaker as I know not everyone has this sort of time. 

Just a few quick rules that are important are as follows: 

All partners must be 18+

I’m a fan of smut and think it can lend itself to the plot, so as long as it makes sense in the plot I’d love to include it!

Since doubling is a big thing now, I want to explain my stance.  I’m so down for playing side characters in order to world build, however I won’t do an ‘I’ll scratch your back, you scratch mine’ deal.  I’m not too great at playing canons, which is why I tend to play ocs.  Sorry if this is a dealbreaker for you!

Onto what I’m looking for would be someone willing to play M fandom characters against my F ones in romantic and angsty pairings!  Below you’ll find the list of pairings I’m currently looking for :).

But what if: Master Thomas had been stressed lately, he was working so hard and so much, he seemed tired too, always on the computer, Rowe was just trying to bring him some coffee/tea, he knew he shouldn't have done it without Master asking but, Master also seemed to like it when he thought for himself, it was a stupid idea apparently, especially when Rowe was so clumsy and spilt the drink all over Masters paper work running 3 weeks of work. (How do you think they would both react)

Rowe gasped, he knew the mug was overfilled, and he shouldn’t have snuck in like that, just because Master left the door open that didn’t give his Pet any right to enter without permission. Especially not when he startled Master so badly that he spun around in his chair, spilling tea all over his important papers.

“Shit!” Master cried, lifting his laptop out of the way, and Rowe had dropped to his knees before he had a chance to think. He knew he had messed up, and Master was angry, and that only meant one thing.

“Ach, no, no,” Master said to him firmly, and Rowe flinched, raising his hands to cover his face. “Don’t kneel, don’t panic, get up and go find a hairdryer.”

Rowe scrambled out of the room while Master grabbed all the dry papers and moved them away, trying to salvage what he could, and Rowe could have just dissolved. Master had been working so hard and Rowe had managed to ruin everything. His old master’s words came to mind- he really was just a stupid, useless mutt. He wasn’t good for anything except taking pain and following orders. In times like this, when he truly fucked up, he remembered that.

Master was delicately peeling the most sodden pages from his desk. Rowe made sure to step on the portion of floor that creaked the most so he wouldn’t startle Master again, before handing him the hairdryer.

“Thanks, Rowe,” he said brusquely. “You didn’t- I didn’t hear you come in, and I, ugh, it just made me jump, it was stupid of me! And now all my papers are wrecked. Ugh. I can’t believe it. Fuck! I can’t believe it.”

Rowe trembled where he stood, watching as Master ran his hands through his hair. He didn’t want to kneel unless it upset Master more. He couldn’t believe it either- couldn’t believe what a disgrace of a Pet he was. He was trembling so badly that his teeth were knocking together.

“I’m so-s-s-sorry Master I shouldn’t- I shouldn’t have-have come in.”

Rowe’s old master used to beat him harder when he stuttered while saying sorry. It should be the easiest word to say. You have to say it enough. Master Tomas didn’t seem to mind, though. Just as long as his Pet apologised enough, he was satisfied. Right now he waved a hand, not turning to him.

“It’s fine, it’s fine, just let me clean this up. I’ll be down after work.”

Rowe’s stomach flipped over as he nodded and left. Master was going to deal with him after work. Before that? Rowe knew what to do.

Master’s belt was in the first drawer down, he knew, and it was right by the hairdryer, so he just-

He grabbed it. Tucked it in his back pocket and left. Old master sometimes liked it when Rowe took the initiative. Maybe Master Tomas wanted him to do that too. Maybe that was why he hadn’t punished him yet. He needed his Pet to be so submissive, so loyal, that he would beg for it himself.

When Master came downstairs later Rowe was already shirtless and knelt in the living room, nose almost touching the floor, with the belt held out in front of him. Offering it, and himself, to his Master.

“Rowe- oh no-“

“I ap-ap-apologise for my t-terrible behaviour, Master. Please, ah, please p-p-punish me so- so I- so I can learn and im…improve.”

He stumbled through it, as usual, he really was such an embarrassment. Even holding the belt out from his position was beginning to make his arms ache. His back ached too, in anticipation.

“Where did you….where did you get my belt?”

Rowe flinched with a whine, his stomach squeezing in fear. Master didn’t want this. He sounded so displeased. Rowe had entered his room without permission! What was he thinking? He had to answer but the words felt like they were stuck in his throat.

“I went-“ his words faded as he whimpered, tears already dripping onto the floor. He was sorry, he needed to speak, he needed Master to know he was sorry. His arms trembled. “-I went into y-y-y-y-your room, Master, I’m so s-sorry, I’m so sorry I won’t, I w-w-won’t ever d-d-do it again, I’m sorry for being such a useless stupid Pet, I’m sorry for th-th-thinking that I can decide how you punish me. I for-forgot my place. Please punish me as you- as you see fi-fit, Master.”

Rowe felt Master take the belt from his hands and squeezed his eyes shut. This was good, this was so good for him. This was what he deserved. Nothing could bring Master’s precious papers back, but his Pet, bloody and split open, sobbing at his feet, would ensure it never happened again.

“Rowe. I am not hurting you with this.”

“I, I understand Master, pl-please punish me h-however you see fit.”

“I’m not going to punish you, pal. Hey,” a hand cupped Rowe’s cheek and he almost, almost jerked away. The other hand was still holding the belt. Was it a threat? Was Master giving him one more chance? “No punishment. It was an accident. I should have heard you come in.”

“But I, I, I- your papers, Master-“

“They’re okay. It’s not your fault. I’m sorry I was blunt with you, pal. Accidents happen, okay? And I don’t punish accidents.”

Rowe let his face be guided up with Master’s gentle fingers, not bearing to make eye contact yet. His eyes were stuck on the belt. He could bring it down on him at any moment.
