It was a bit uncomfortable And what is appealing with Genshin Impact (for me) is the fact that they use real culture to create their game ; even in the last survey, they ask if we like Natlan's authenticity (weird they only ask abt environment and music, i think they know they have issue with character design bahaha). I learn a lot about persian, algerian, but also chinese and even about french culture ! It is because people recognize themself that they start talking about it. Ok, so... giving the very first 3 chapters a re-read...

Isn't a nice of a start for a story focusing on love, its nature and wishes, to start with a desperate girl going for a love wish?

ch 1 had me laughing a lot at Hanako's condition. Like... it's so funny out of everyone in the universe Nene went to him to grant her a 'love' wish. Nene... don't open some wounds. He fails hard in there. He is a "beginner" as he called himself later. LOL

Imagining he turned to such help before with the case of the little brother of his? An advice book? That would be hilarious. for how long did you have this one or even looked into it times and times until its the way it is now?

I can't help it! I can't help it to imagine him trying any of the methods from a certain book on Tsukasa and failing hard, or Tsukasa giving him a look of "what is wrong with you today? Ahaha, Amane you weirdo! ♡"

Like, instead of trying to TALK and tell Tsukasa "I love you. I care about you. I want you here with me.", he can try using some other methods. Communicating his feelings via words is so haaaard to him.

Uh, I seriously don't blame Tsukasa for not getting your feelings. You... didn't really convey them the way they are supposed to, instead you kept running with ineffective ways, instead of going for the one efficient one. Mr. beginner.

Isn't it a bit harsh for you to go saying "I hate you" to Tsukasa? I mean yeah, he didn't understand any of your efforts and all, still goes just the same way as always, but does the initial problem lie within him or you, who didn't use the right method to convey his message?

It's like giving an apple to a cat "to eat" and blaming it for starving later despite your efforts, going "hey! I'm feeding it! It doesn't want to eat!". A cat doesn't eat apple to begin with. The problem lies within you feeding it improbably.

Same goes to Amane's case with Tsukasa. He is trying to make his feelings reach Tsukasa, instead of using the one method he really needs to get Tsukasa to finally realize his feelings, to talk and voice them out clearly, he went for every other hard way, forgetting the essence of the issue.

Save yourself all the trouble and tell him, see where that would lead you.

Ch 1 is rich with meaning, don't want to focus on any other thing, even this one I just went briefly with it for fun. It's funny how ch 1 feels to summarize Amane's struggles with conveying his feelings to Tsukasa, and having them never working to his favor, going "unnoticed", like Nene. With him helping her even, no other point to prove how of a beginner he is, even after more than 50 years. Boy... I'm sorry I'm just laughing the pain away.

Ok, moving on a bit to ch 2 and 3...

IBO reference notes on . . . the aesthetics of the mobile frame

I'm having a rough time writing this week (I just need to torture Gaelio some more, why is this so haaaard?!) so here's something to keep my hand in regardless. I had a couple of posts planned on the mobile suits of the Post Disaster setting, one about the meanings applied to Gundams – which I shall complete at some point because it's interesting – and one ranking the various 'suits using criteria such as 'excellent round boy, no notes' – which I'm likely to ditch because it's quite boring. But thinking about that got me considering the reasons I clicked hard with IBO's art direction in the first place. So let's look into why it causes my brain to make so many pleasing whirring noises.

A distinction that makes a difference

To start with, this is in contrast to other Gundam series' aesthetics. While I have a certain fondness for the Gundam Wing designs and I enjoy the way the Dauntless, Valiant, etc. reimagine the Universal Century stalwarts for Gundam X, most iterations' mobile suits are firmly 'OK' for me. Neither very interesting, nor something I find anything in to especially dislike.

Iron-Blooded Orphans, however, introduces a concept that sets it apart: the mobile frame. That is, each mecha is built around a base skeleton that is the 'true' machine; everything else is modular and interchangeable. As far as I can tell, this is the only series in the franchise to do this. Other Gundam shows expose inner workings from time to time, but these are usually unique to a particular model of 'suit. Whereas in IBO, multiple different types of 'suit can share the same kind of frame.

Moreover, the fact they are built around an inner frame is made explicit in the art, so the 'suits look – slightly daft as it may sound – much more mechanical than, say, your average UC mecha. These are things approximating the human form, not something you can replicate with a guy in a costume, and that makes them appear somewhat less fanciful and slightly more like actual military hardware.

Which is a cheat, obviously. It's tweaking a genre convention to fit a particular tone: this is not a show in which 'suits are going to start magically bending time and space; it's the one in which they beat seven shades of brick-dust out of each other with giant lumps of metal. Fundamentally, these are no less silly than the more 'filled in' designs that came before. It just appeals to me to see the illusion being given extra depth.

But there's more to it than that.

Atoms of design

Several different types of mobile frame appear in IBO – eight, to be exact: Rodi, Hexa, Gundam, Valkyrja, Geirail, Graze, Teiwaz/Io, and Reginlaze (I count the Teiwaz and Io frames as one since they are functionally identical). These are all visually distinct and easy to distinguish when placed in the finished mobile suits. Yet they also share a common root element: the Ahab reactor.

Most Gundam shows have some sort of wibble-physics black-box to explain why giant humanoid robots are a sensible means of warfare. In the P.D. timeline, this takes the form of 'Ahab particles' that are generated by some form of quantum nonsense inside a drum-shaped reactor. The particles create pseudo-gravity and EM waves that interfere with communications and tracking, and the reactors are effectively infinite batteries, so we get artificial gravity and inertial control, comms black-outs and stealth in space, and the necessary wattage to power a mecha, all for the price of one.

That's the technobabble, anyway. Practically speaking, the Ahab reactor is a design element that must be integrated into each of the mobile frames. And I love this. I love setting arbitrary little rules and using them to create a coherent aesthetic. Because now each frame needs to have a big drum shape in it somewhere (or two, to create the Gundam frame's unique silhouette). A unifying commonality that still permits wide variation.

It's not always necessary to have designs reflect a concept of shared technology. That depends on what the story is doing. Witch From Mercury, for example, explicitly has multiple branches of mobile suit design on display at once, to delineate between 'suits produced by different companies. However, I enjoy the way IBO emphasises that the various mecha are all applications of the same base technology, especially as it gets at something easy to overlook about how the world is set up.

You see, while the Gundams get the reputation as these massively powerful weapons from a lost past, that is true of the majority of non-Gjallarhorn mobile suits. Rodis and Hexas are the most common frames and both predate the Gundam frame's development. Everyone who isn't Gjallarhorn or Teiwaz is using machinery at least 300 years old, never mind that it might be covered in brand new armour.

Those space pirates raiding ships in the Jupiter-sphere? The colonists trying to seize control of their living conditions? That country hurriedly upgrading its military for a modern challenge? They're all recycling the same frames that fought the war out of which the systems they're currently struggling to live with extend. It's incredibly thematically resonant, not to mention pretty close to the truth of the things IBO is assaying in its fiction.

Visceral shorthand

However, I think the most clever thing about the mobile frame model is the way it lends itself to in-the-moment storytelling. Having established the skeletons underlying each mecha, the show can freely expose them as required to demonstrate exactly how badly a fight is going.

IBO abandons the lightsabers and laser-guns of its predecessor shows in favour of a more grounded and brutal approach to combat. That is to say: thanks to additional technobabble, breaking through the armour of a mobile suit requires either something very sharp, going very fast, or something very heavy, also going very fast. Swords, clubs, maces, and heavy-gauge bullets are the order of the day, leading to a lot of crumpling and crushing, and more specifically, bits of armour being ripped off the frame.

It's a great shorthand for 'oh that was a hit', applied generously to all sides, to emphasise the damage being done while also making it clear the machines can technically still function in such a state. Barbatos actively starts out extra-skeletal, while 'suits like the Reginlaze Julia keep going when stripped of their surface layer. Even the unfortunate Graze Ritter on the back of which Mikazuki surf-boards down from orbit is visibly coming apart around its frame, underlining how tough the cores of these things are.

Furthermore, it increases the sense that the human component of a mobile suit is extremely frail by comparison. When you a have weapons structured around extremely durable inner workings, it draws attention to the vulnerability of the cockpit. Because in most of the frames, that's part of what goes on top. Rodi and Io frames have integrated control cabins, but the rest do not. On most of them, the pilot sits at what is nominally the most heavily protected section (the chest), but in fact, they are a little way in front of the piece that can be actively relied on not to break (the reactor).

Or to put it another way: a mobile suit pilot is visibly more likely to die in battle before the war machine they are strapped to does. Skewering the cockpit with something pointy is a deeply feasible strategy, and that vulnerability stems from design limitations imposed by the chosen structure of the mecha. The reactor has to go somewhere central. The mobile suit is built around a set frame. The armour will detach before the limbs break. So on and so forth, ad drill-knees, underscoring how cheap life is next to the hardware of war.

Making it about bones

To sum up, it's a neat concept, well executed. Mobile frames allow for visual coherence while permitting design variation and customisation. They are used to underscore the brutality of the combat, adding weight to blow-by-blow animation and to the general sense of danger for the cast. And they make IBO's mecha stand out from the pack, which to me is a big mark in their favour.

There's another point that delights me too, one I can best illustrate with some images. If you look at the at the Calamity War era frames, you'll see that the Rodi (left) and Hexa (centre) are both heavily robotic in outline. They have complex hands but are otherwise quite blocky, with very inhuman heads. The Gundam frame (right), however, has a more organic design, its points of movement more closely corresponding to the human body, and (uniquely) two eyes placed about where you'd expect.

Now clearly the Gundam is inheriting franchise design considerations (the 'man in a suit' look of the '79 cartoon) but within the fiction, it works brilliantly with the conceit of Gundams perfecting the man/machine interface. Of course it looks closer to a person; it's meant to be a more natural extension of the pilot than the frames that came earlier, to enable the split-second timing and instinctive movement required to beat the mobile armours.

We also see this running in the opposite direction. The Valkyrja (far left) is actually closer to the Gundam's sensibilities than its other contemporaries (it was developed at the same time), but its successors, the Geirail and then Graze, are even more robotic than the Rodi and Hexa, with considerably simplified structures. Even the hands are much more chunky and functional.

The narrative is both of a technological decline and of the requirements of mass-production. In the post-War society, mobile suit combat is less of an issue, so the 'suits don't need to be as complex. It's only when Gjallarhorn's position as top-dog in the solar system is threatened that they invest in something closer to the Valkyrja, with the Reginlaze (far right) being designed to allow a non-augmented pilot to compete with things like Gundam Barbatos.

I really like that degree of thought and detail in something that isn't especially relevant to the story, but adds to it once you know about it.

We’re halfway through pride month, so I would like to give my fellow cis people a GENTLE FUCKING REMINDER: being a trans ally isn’t just about doing what’s convenient or fun for you. 

Reblogging lots of “Donkey Kong said trans rights!” or “Fuck terfs!” or whatever the fuck posts don’t mean shit if you’re not making an active effort to be inclusive of trans people. Great, cool, you posted a funny meme, or you mindlessly repeated something about Stonewall or whatever, but are you perpetuating transphobic rhetoric in your other posts? Are you listening to trans people? Does your support of trans people mean actual support, or just passively not hating them? I’m fucking sick and tired of seeing cis people not give a shit about trans people, and then pat themselves on the back for taking .5 seconds to reblog a picture of Lily Hoshikawa or whatever the fuck. You need to Make. An. Effort. Allyship that’s only skin deep is not allyship at all, it’s just trying to make yourself look good because hashtag diversity or whatever the fuck.

It’s 2019, it’s time to start making bigger changes. Yes, it’s great that we’re at a point where it’s seen as cool to post pro-trans memes and such, it’s great that parts of society are now past the “it’s fine to outright blatantly say you hate trans people” phsase, but we can’t stop there. It’s time for all of us to start actively working to uplift and protect our trans siblings, even if that means- gasp, oh the horror- having to, like, think critically and reflect on our own flaws.

(And yes, this does include myself- I need to continue making an effort as well, because being a good ally isn’t a one-time thing where you can go “Well, I’ve been deemed a Good Ally Now so I don’t have to actually do anything anymore”. I do need to have an active awareness of myself and keep myself in check, as all cis people should fucking be doing.)

9. What are the best things about your current fandom?

I could write a novel. The incredible creators - of all kinds, across all facets of Riverdale fandom as a whole. We have such amazing fic, gifs, art, vids, edits - I am here for ALL this creativity. The hardworking members of the community that make this such a rich place to be with resource/source blogs. The flailers/cheerleaders that make me smile with their joy, wit, and pure excitement. At the end of the day, I love this fandom.

23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.

This is haaaard. Author questions like this - my greatest fear. Lol. Probably Beneath the Silver Moon Rising. I enjoyed where I got to in Jughead’s head. It’s one of the few times where at the end of it all I went… wow, I think I actually managed to do a good job with this.

31. What’s the nicest thing someone has ever said about your writing?

That’s a tough call. Really tough. @kovicjones, @shibbycat (who also leaves these AMAZING reviews, incredible) and @jane-hoppers have really been pulling me through recently (kicking and screaming) as I write, whenever I’ve written. @bugggghead @milkshakesandmurders @pennyroads @noorakardemmomesaetre and @juxtaposedmusings have been some really wonderful behind the scenes/in comments cheerleaders. @melton-my-heart and @i-know-you-can leave me regular really in depth, awesome reviews. @arsenicpanda once left me this rewiew… on Beneath the Silver Moon Rising and it legit made me cry. I’ve never received something like that. Everyone who reads and supports my work, however, really truly means so much. I’ve been a real anxious shit about responding to all the comments - but it’s my 2019 goals. Even the back logged ones, they mean the world.

I get that it can come off as kind of rude when someone is like “well asexual people can’t just make our own community because that’s hard, that’s why we should include asexual people in considerations of the LGBT community, such as it is” and other people respond with something to the effect of “uh of course it’s hard, what are you, six?” but like... literally what do you want here? “We can’t organize because we’re only X percent of the population” - I mean, virtually all marginalized people can be conceptualized as minorities in certain contexts (and if you’re not a minority in a technical sense, if you are a marginalized person, the function of oppression is often to PRESENT you as a minority so your concerns are easily dismissed, and organizing to address your concerns is harder) to say nothing of the fact that a lot of times these statistical analyses of what percentage of the population is some marginalized group or other are unreliable for a variety of reasons! Like, I keep seeing people saying that asexuals are “one percent” of the population, but I’ve never seen an actual citation for that, and the “one percent” thing is ALSO something I heard about LGBT people growing up (specifically from people who were arguing against legal protections for LGBT people - “they don’t need it because they’re only one percent of the population anyway” - so forgive me if I don’t have a lot of patience for people pulling that sort of thing out of their ass in these discussions specifically) even though that clearly makes no sense. 

Like, I just... I am trying really hard to not sound dismissive, but what do you want to hear! That it’s cool for one group to ride the coattails of another groups advocacy and organizing efforts because, uh, organizing is hard? Or that organizing ISN’T hard at all? Neither of those things is true, so like, sorry? I guess? I don’t know what to say! I don’t know how to respond to people who are like “well okay maybe asexual people as a group have different practical concerns than a lot of LGBT people and maybe this idea that there’s a shared history there is based on misinformation and outright lies but ORGANIZING IS HAAAARD” - like listen my friends, I am not saying this to flaunt my activist cred or whatever but I’ve written books on social movements, I’ve been arrested and beaten by cops more than once in the course of my political activism “””career”””, I’ve facilitated and presented at meetings with people in positions of authority, I’ve co-organized marches, rallies, direct action events, panel discussions, petitions... all of that is work! It’s a lot of actual work. It takes many hours and not a small amount of practical skill, a lot of which is not really taught anywhere in any conventional sense - most people I know who do community organizing stuff just kind of picked up the skills they need through a long, sometimes painful process of learning and growth.

I know that when you’re 21 and you’ve spent a lot of time socializing primarily through the internet this sort of thing feels absolutely impossible, but it’s not! It’s all done by regular people who are ultimately a lot like you, even if the concerns they’re organizing around aren’t concerns that you have. And before someone is like, “well not everyone is ABLE to organize in this way” - I mean, no fucking shit, do you think literally every LGBT person was at Stonewall? No, the way this works is people do what they can, they put their efforts into what is manageable for them, and they coordinate. Like, again, I don’t know what you want to hear, here! I guess what some people want to hear is that they just shouldn’t and don’t have to do any work on their own behalves, but I don’t like the idea that that’s what everyone wants to hear, because it’s depressing for me.

When was the last time you cried, and why? Uhhh, I think last week? I’m not sure whether it’s because I’m so sick until I feel so frustrated or when I was having a huge row with my parent LOL

Do you prefer staying at home or hanging out at your friends’s place? Depends, really. When I’m in the mood for going out and socialize, I’d rather hanging out at my friend’s place. Though there’s one friend of mine where I can totally relax and because my house is not so peaceful right now I think I’d rather be there kkkk. Though, mostly I prefer to be at a coffee shop alone with my laptop :)

If you were in a situation where your fav SLBP character and your 10 yrs old child with him are at the brink of death. You are given the chance to save only one of them. Who would you choose? My child. Well, I’ll love both of them, obv, but I think even my Lord will prefer me saving my child, and... well, in Sengoku it’s not like our life expectancy will be that high, as a wife of a Lord HAHAHHA *morbid thought*

What’s your favorite food and to what length will you go to get it? Uhhh I love a lot of things. Well, I love durians so much that when I went to Spore I searched for them, and when I went to Lampung too.... 

If you can time travel to any period and any country, where would you go? Why that period/country? Hmmmm probably the Victorian Era, England? I just like their dresses, though I’m sure it’s uncomfortable LOL I was always drawing a puffy princess dresses when I was a child, with laces and frills. Even now, while I’d like to wear a casual and sporty style, I’m still fond of them though I don’t want to wear them most of the time

Outings is hard! Way harder than dates! Most of mine are kind of neutral, but a bit ago I had a rocking one, and I was all "Go me!" and puffed up with pride over a silly outing in a silly game. SMH.

They are! Why are dates so easy and outings so haaaard?! Probably because dates are with just one other person, whereas outings have a whole bunch to keep happy... It would have been kind to give us more time for the outings--count some extra seconds per head. I’m also woefully out of practise because I’ve ignored outings altogether for years, but it’s kind of fun to have a newish challenge again. And it’s fun to see what wacky conglomeration of Sims will show up together!

He does! That wasn’t intentional, but now that you mention it, it’s appropriate. Poor guy is a bit of a third wheel, though the others would never deliberately make him feel left out. It’s just how it goes sometimes when you hang out around lovey dovey family people and you’re single.

Don’t feel too badly for her. She’s not much nicer than Kiera, and did some arguing and poking of her own to escalate things. It happened mostly on another community lot and I was so surprised by it (so far Monica has never acted really mean to anyone) I didn’t take any photos.

Nope, I’m on Chrome too. It was a tumblr issue, but it resolved itself pretty quickly--probably before you were online. Images weren’t all loading for a lot of people, and uploading them gave only errors. Just some slow servers, I guess. But it was fixed, as it always is. :) The end of the world cometh not yet.

I started this blog because I find it easier to communicate my thoughts through writing/typing. So here we go. This is a piece from something I wrote in 2016:

In May of 2015, I walked into the doors of Imago Fitness seeking help to better myself. I had anxiety issues and struggled with depression. I was ashamed and deeply embarrassed. I developed a toxic obsession with being perfect and I kept hating myself for not being anywhere near it. My issues were affecting every aspect of my life. I really hated everything about who I was and I was so sick and tired of feeling the way that I did. On June 1st, 2015, I began my very first day of a fitness transformation program. It lasted a bit longer than 12 weeks. I had some guidance from my coach and trainers. But the program I had signed up for was really independent. I felt extremely overwhelmed with the exercises I was given and proper nutrition/the meal plan concept was almost like a foreign language to me. I didn’t know where to begin and if I could follow through. at. all. A year later: When I look at these progress pictures, I see someone who understands that she is not perfect, but that being her “best self” is possible. Don’t think I can ever say it enough, but prioritizing my health and pursuing a more active and fit lifestyle is truly the best decision I have ever made for myself… Next to getting my dog, Raj. :) I can’t wait for more and I hope that one day, I will have the opportunity to experience being in a bikini competition.

I’ve only opened this blog to my Instagram family because most of you know that I signed up to compete in my 1st bikini competition this year. Before doing that, I talked about choosing a good coach, flexible dieting, and how I wanted to share what the process was like. Honestly, it was difficult to share most of it because I had to spend a lot of the time with myself.. if that makes sense. And, that is what the sport literally requires.

I was training a young lady once and asked her to roll up her sleeves so that she could see for herself, what she was working. She then told me she wasn’t comfortable with doing so because she felt that her arms were too fat, that she didn’t have the “look” to be able to wear a tank top.

Now.. This was something that was happening after I had put on 20lbs the previous year, due to a very stressful time in my life.

As much as I wanted to encourage her to stop thinking that way, I felt like a huge hypocrite. There I was, standing in a humid gym, wearing a large sweater because I knew I wasn’t as lean as I was before. I realized then, that I couldn’t continue to train anyone or teach anyone how to be comfortable with their own bodies if I wasn’t even comfortable with my own. I have to be honest with myself if I want to continue growing and moving forward - I still have so much more to work on.

I wrote this before getting in touch with my coach:

Fitness has given me the power to believe in myself over and over again. It helps me grow my self-confidence and teaches me to love myself so that I can continue to love and support others. Fitness isn’t about having the “perfect” body, it’s about sharpening your inner strength. It’s about challenging yourself to become better, to shatter doubt, to relieve stress, and it’s about believing in yourself. Fitness is about finding out what you are made of and that is why I love it. I want to see if I can do it. It’s out of my comfort zone yet I want to see how far I’ll go if it give it a try. One goal of mine is to achieve a physique that is closer to my genetic potential.

Fast forward to this very moment.. Damn, prep is HAAAARD. The truth is, I have NOT been doing well.. and I have not been consistent with everything on prep. I need some time to reflect before I write my next post, but for now, I’ve decided to pull myself out of prep. Currently.. I am feeling disappointed in myself. Sometimes “healthy” doesn’t always mean going to the gym. Sometimes, it also means sitting ya ass down to reflect. Will need some time to rethink and replan. Will update soon
