Smartphones didn't exist and the cell phones that were around were mostly used by older teens and adults, never kids. Smart watches and tablets only existed as speculative sci-fi tech. That's why Dib uses a communicator watch in Bloaty's once but otherwise mainly carries around a giant laptop to communicate with the Swollen Eyeballs. Episodes like Nanozim, Mysterious Mysteries, and Zim Eats Waffles hinge on Dib not being able to instantly post pics/livestream Zim without his disguise and FBI Warning is based on the concept of physical media rental still being a thing.

YouTube didn't exist yet and internet download speeds were really slow, so there weren't a lot of videos on the internet and most of what there was were flash animations on sites like Newgrounds. Instead of social media or fan wikis, fans created their own niche websites to celebrate their favorite shows, musical artists, and other interests. This is why the Swollen Eyeball Network is its own site and not like, a Discord chat or a subreddit or 4chan board.

Dib most likely dresses the way he does because The Matrix came out the same year Jhonen was solicited to pitch a series.

Part of the reason Invader Zim was probably allowed to get away with some of the stuff that it did was because South Park was already a pioneer in edgy, offensive, shock humor. It's a little easier to understand how people could accept stuff like Keef getting his eyes ripped out when SP's first episode was literally "Cartman Gets an Anal Probe".

It was very common to hear the r-slur and f-slur casually slung around or to use "gay" as an insult. Explicitly queer rep was not allowed in children's media and queer-coded characters were almost always villainous, and usually very flamboyant and campy. Queerness and queer history was not mentioned or acknowledged in school and wasn't a protected category. You could still be fired/denied employment or housing for being visibly queer and people would use "gay panic" as a defense for murdering queer people.

Slut-shaming and fat-shaming was still pretty normalized, but there was actually a lot loss gender essentialist BS going around. Contemporary feminism mostly pushed the idea of "Girl Power! Girls can do anything boys can do!" which sometimes veered into "Not like other girls" territory where masculinity was still being put on a pedestal and femininity degraded as "weakness". But the trans bathroom panic wasn't a thing. While there were stereotypes about how all men are pigs who only care about sex, men weren't seen as universally predatory and bathrooms weren't seen as sacred safe spaces for women. Stuff like GI-Jane and Starship Troopers portrayed women showering with men fearlessly because men could be expected to behave themselves and even a fairly conservative show on a family network like Boy Meets World portrayed a boy being afraid to use a co-ed bathroom as childish and immature. IRL, if you saw a man in the women's bathroom, you wouldn't automatically assume he was there to perv on anyone. You'd assume he was probably there because the men's room was full/dirty/out of TP, or he was waiting on his daughter or girlfriend. "Man wearing a dress/disguising himself as a woman" was commonly used as a comedy premise, but it wasn't usually portrayed as something sinister or predatory. You were supposed to laugh at the awkward situations that arose whenever a dude in disguise was in an intimate space with an unknowing woman, probably because even if the guy was meant to be straight, the fact that he was in a dress kinda made you view him as "gay" and therefore not a threat to the woman. If anything, trans women/gay men/drag queens/androgynous pretty boys were seen as more threatening to men because a straight man might be "tricked" into being attracted to them and unknowingly participating in homosexual activity.

I lot of people thought colorblindness was the way to equality, and it was progressive to just not acknowledge differences and pretend like racism and sexism were over. This is why Gaz never experiences sexism for being a gamer girl, why people accuse Dib of discriminating against Zim just for being "different" but no one ever actually calls him racist or treats Zim with any compassion or sensitivity for his "condition", and probably why you'd never know the Membranes are supposed to be Mexican if you didn't read Jhonen's tumblr post.

Terms like "Aspergers" and "high functioning/low-functioning" were still being used to differentiate between people on the Autism spectrum and it was rare for girls to get diagnosed because their symptoms usually presented differently. Autism was a dreaded diagnosis that made parents either want to deny that their precious child could have something "wrong" with them, or lament how their life was ruined because their child would always be a burden who could never function as an independent adult. Autism was seen as a disease that needed a cure and people eagerly latched onto the idea that vaccines were to blame for the scourge.

ADHD was believed to be a made-up diagnosis for kids who were just being kids/hopped up on too much sugar whose parents didn't want to deal with that level of energy so they used medication to drug them into a zombie-like stupor.

Because of the lack of knowledge and misinformation about Autism and ADHD, people often saw what we would now consider obvious symptoms to be "just being lazy", "just being a geek", "just being awkward/weird", or "just being a thoughtless asshole". If people knew about your diagnosis, they would constantly accuse you of using it as an excuse and the only "help" that existed was just telling kids to act more neurotypical.

Because of the lack of public awareness and stigmas against Autism, ADHD, and mental health in general, it was seen as shameful to send your child to a therapist or to receive a diagnosis confirming that there was something "wrong" with them, so parents often just avoided it. This is likely why Membrane doesn't seek out any mental health help for his son, despite believing him to be crazy, and despite the amount of trouble he gets into, and why Dib and Zim come across as having undiagnosed Autism/ADHD that they're completely unaware that they have.

Okay so hair rant ahead.

I might be chopping my hair off when the coronavirus is over.

I had a short pixie hair for like 4,5 years (from fall 2012 to spring 2017) and started to grow it long mainly because people were pressuring me with "oh you'd look so beautiful if you had longer hair" "try growing your hair long, that would fit you soooo much better" and I wanted to show everyone that yeah, while it's girly and nice-looking, I don't like it. And I still don't like it, after over 3 years of growing it. I almost never let it down, it's always on ponytail because it's always on the way when it's down.

It's been pretty long for about 2,5 years and to say it straight, while I do like it when it's braided or when I have curls, all the brushing in the morning, my hair falling everywhere, how it's always in the way if I don't keep it on ponytail, how it takes 3-4 hours to dry after shower/swimming and the general I don't like it-mood starts to climb too high.

People are saying that I shouldn't chop it off (and acting like it's not just hair or like it's not my hair). Someone got angry at me when I said I'm seriously considering of chopping it off, she almost started crying and saying "no, please don't" and now she’s keeping up silent treatment and glaring at me when I said that it's my hair and I can do anything I want with it. 🙄

I just remember loving my pixie so much and hating it every time when it started to grow out. I've thought of chopping it off occasionally but around October last year I started to think about it more seriously, but I started bringing it up this year because I was fearing the reactions people would give me if I brought that up. And I got just the reactions I expected at first... “WHY WOULD YOU CUT YOUR BEAUTIFUL HAIR OFF, WHAT IF YOU REGRET IT, WHAT IF IT WON’T FIT TO YOU????”

Like gurl, the only thing I regret is that I have wasted my time with tending these 2-3 hours a day because I can’t do anything without these getting all tangled and I need to brush these with dry conditioner for 20 minutes (without the conditioner 30 minutes) to untangle them every time they’ve been on ponytail/they’ve gotten wet or anything so they wouldn’t look like a bird’s nest.

I just hope that people aren't acting like I just tattooed something illegal on my forehead when they see it and be like "😱😱😱 why did you chop your beautiful hair off like that???" or “I would never chop my hair off...” or “I think you looked beautiful when you had long hair, I can’t understand why you chopped it”, thanks I guess???

I can't understand why should I explain myself to everyone like I did when I had that short hair last time because women asked about the reasons why I have short hair and I was told that men could think I’m a lesbian and won’t be attracted to me because I have that short hair etc and people went on and on with how longer hair could miraculously change my life because appearance is everything and girls should have long hair without question. I mean... it's just hair, it doesn't change me as a person??

Only things I don’t look forward to is going to hairdresser every month and people always wondering how peculiar and horrifying it is when I’m a woman and have short hair. And the oh-so-funny jokes that I’m surely a lesbian who drives a truck (rekkalesbo is a commonly used joke name for women with short hair in Finland). Hehehehe, I’m soooo original when I make fun of your hair and saying that you’re a truck lesbian, you surely haven’t heard it 46794836 times before!!

But yeah. Maybe I’ll chop it to be shoulder length at first and go further if that’s too much work too, or go straight to pixie again...

I remember how I loved how my pixie hair required zero preparing, I woke up and it looked pretty much the same every day. I’m not big on getting ready with hair styling etc so pixie was perfect + it fit for my face.

How quickly did/will they fall in love? -I think Anthy was the first to feel a spark after Utena’s rematch against Touga, she didn’t truly accept it as love though until she had to watch Akio seduce her. I think Utena was always attracted to Anthy/found her pretty but suppressed that shit down, more romance started to bloom near the end of the Black Rose arc and being the dumb jock she is, I don’t think she knew she loved her until the final episode

How was their first kiss? - Sloppy and kinda gross, but the cherry on the top to their reunion

Wedding:

Who proposed? - Utena, but Anthy is the first to bring it up

Who is the best man/men? - maybe Miki if by then they had reunited after Ohtori and he had grown out of his possessiveness, can definitely see this spot staying empty though

Who is the braid’s maid(s)? - Wakaba definitely, Juri maybe, Nanami if and only if after Ohtori they’ve rekindled an actual friendship

Who did the most planning? - I feel like it was a joint thing they were both kinda useless about in different ways, Utena had to initiate for any plans to get made, but when it comes to making decisions, it was Anthy who did most of that

Who stressed the most? - Utena bc I think Anthy would just be apathetic about the actual ceremony

How fancy was the ceremony? - Back of a pickup truck | 2 | 3 | 4 | Normal Church Wedding | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Kate and William wish they were this big. (After all the stress got to them they settled on a courtroom marriage but they still got dressed up and had a small, private reception afterwards)

Who said “I love you” first Most likely Oliver. It’s a big thing for him too, but, if there is something he can be confident on, is choosing and recognising which people really matter to him. Moreover, he knows John enough to be sure that, if he doesn’t say it first, no one ever will. John isn’t very good with words when it comes to be honest about his feeling and, while he might imply, almost slip and try to show it with words, he never really works up the courage to spit the words out. One could argue that he is afraid of the consequences that said words might have once they have been spelled out aloud. It might sound paranoid, but when it comes to magic words can be extremely powerful. Calling things by their real name is what allows the most powerful spells to work.

Who would have the other’s picture as their phone background Neither. John has a phone but he barely uses it and he keeps either breaking or losing it, so he couldn’t be bothered with choosing a personalised background picture for it. Moreover, he finds the idea useless because he wouldn’t be looking at it in any case. Oliver prefers keeping printed pictures in his wallet, just as he used to do with Laurel’s. Pics on phone feel a bit too impersonal and he prefers having something he can physically touch. Moreover, anyone could take a peek at his phone and he likes keeping his personal life private.

Who leaves notes written in fog on the bathroom mirror John does, from time to time. He usually does when he needs to leave before Oliver has come back from his night job and decides to enjoy the luxury of the vigilante’s shower one last time before leaving (usually he always stays away for more than one week and considering that his shower can hardly compare to it, you can’t blame him for missing it). He puts a spell on the mirror, so that the fog stays till Oliver cleans the words out. He has been told that he could simply leave notes on the table as normal people, but where’s the fun in that?

Who buys the other cheesy gifts They get presents for each other from time to time, but “cheesy” isn’t exactly the right word to describe them. Oliver usually buys John food (because that walking mess forgets to eat far too often), decent alcohol (because the only reason why the cheap one he usually drinks hasn’t killed him is his demon blood), and objects for daily life (from razors to socks, because John either loses them or ruins them because he makes unorthodox uses of said objects). John is a bit more scarse with his presents. He usually brings back some odd artifact, some magical, some not so much. He usually doesn’t buy them, but either “finds” them or straight out steals them, but those are details Oliver shouldn’t be concerned with. It’s the thought that counts after all.

Who initiated the first kiss Technically speaking, it was Oliver. Back when their entanglement first began, Oliver had not realised yet that he had a certain attraction for men too and John, while not having missed the signals, kept himself from making the official first move until the other man had wrapped his head around the idea. However, that didn’t stop him to keep flirting, implying, teasing (with both words and touches) until Oliver snapped and was left with no other choice than do exactly what John wanted him to do. Namely slamming him against a wall and kissing him.

Who kisses the other awake in the morning Oliver. John is not a morning person, when he actually gets enough sleep to be awake at a decent hour. He tends to be grumpy, even hostile if it’s been a bad night, but he can be lured into a decent mood with the promise of a good breakfast. Being waken up with a kiss or more might also help.

Who starts tickle fights John. The truth is that none of them is very ticklish, but, if he is in a decent mood, John uses the excuse to tease Oliver into turning said fights into something more heated and intimate. He has best tactics to obtain that sort of result, but the truth is that he enjoys (when he is in the right mood) having the two of them rolling around the couch or the bed for a bit, being playful, before getting down to business. According to Felicity, Oliver doesn’t laugh enough and John is glad to help her changing that at least in part.

Who asks who if they can join the other in the shower Oliver. He asks in a playful manner, because he only does whenever he knows that John would gladly welcome him, even if he didn’t stop to ask for permission. As for John, he doesn’t ask. Unless he knows that Oliver isn’t in the mood, he just steps in. Or uses magic to make sure he is already there when Oliver steps in. The bastard.

Who surprises the other in the middle of the day at work with lunch Technically speaking neither, because John’s work doesn’t exactly allow Oliver to show up with lunch and John hardly remembers his own meals, let alone someone else’s. However, Oliver always makes sure to cook breakfast or dinner for John when he stays over and, from time to time, he even packs him something to eat later on during the day. John huffs and puffs about this, teases Oliver about what a good housewife he’d make, but he always accepts the food because, whether he likes to admit it or not, Oliver is just too good at cooking to refuse him.

Who was nervous and shy on the first date They never really had an official first date, since their relationship started as friends with benefits and then evolved into something more concrete. So, by the time they started to go out for drinks and dinner and call it a “date”, they were already far too comfortable with each other to be really shy or nervous. And if, before the very first planned date, Oliver had spent a bit longer than the usual to get ready for it and if John had smoked a few more cigarettes than he usually did to soothe his nerves a bit, no one ever mentioned it

Who kills/takes out the spiders Oliver does take them out, when he decides that he can be bothered by them. John usually just ignores them, unless he is in a very, very bad mood. In that case, he can be very cruel to them, if someone doesn’t intervene. Felicity did, once, and from that day the magician hasn’t even dared to glare at a fly in her presence.

Who loudly proclaims their love when they’re drunk Both? In their own way. Oliver gets very handsy and affectionate when he is drunk, while John expressed his appreciation with even more open, louder and dirtier comments. Oliver doesn’t like to get drunk in general, for several reason, but he absolutely forbids to have them getting drunk together, especially in public. The one time it happened, they almost caused a scene, of the kind he used to make as a young man, before Lian Yu. Never again.

Or at least, shoots down Dorothea’s flirting in the B support. I think there’s value in having a non traditionally girly character who’s still hetero, many girls who want bfs get told that they will never get one if they don’t act stereotypical and that sucks. Or you could even read her as aspec given that she’s not too interested in pairing up or being attractive, and that the Glenn thing was arranged. She can still admire him and be sad he died without necessarily having the hots for him after all they probably grew up together. Also I don’t really see the particular appeal of those 2 characters together, they don’t have that much in common and Dorothea has a bajillion better options including sapphic ones.

There’s nothing in particular that makes me think “Wow those would go super well together” but also nothing to the contrary. I’ve seen good fic for it. I guess they’re just the two dudes who get the most characterization and also sorta get along/interact, so there’s a lot to work with.

How long will they last? - Hm. Dimitri would strike me as someone would like to be serious and longterm about things. They would need to work out the politics first but there’s no reason why they couldn’t last

How quickly did/will they fall in love? - I’d say it wouldn’t take them that long to get started, but somewhat longer to really get to a deep level. Largely because Claude is quick to build surface friendships but slower to really show his real feelings, but also Dimitri wouldn’t necessarily realize that he’s holding something back or press the issue. It helps that they are both just likeable people tho. Dimitri is not going to pass up a chance for a heart-to heart talk. If he got through to that hidden more idealistic side of Claude I think they’d click and get something lasting going. They would definitely always have disagreements about their methods and are fairly different in how they deal with their feelings, but they both have the will to work with ppl with different opinions and build bridges.

This is going to be a very personal story, but maybe sharing it will help someone reading it.

When I was a kid, I always preferred stories that had cool girl protagonists instead of boys. Blegh. They were just annoying. My favorite bands were girl bands and my favorite movie stars were also women. It hadn’t even occurred to me that some girls could like /boy bands/. Well, I was a kid, so it didn’t matter what I liked and what not. Our tastes were still developing, after all.

When I was 11, a girl friend of mine kissed me on the cheek, probably as a thank you for something I had done. I couldn’t forget about it for a week, and I didn’t understand why. Now I know better: the little Matilda had her first crush. But that wasn’t an option to the 11-year-old me. When I told my mum I thought a friend of mine looked cute, in an innocent way, she told me to be quiet and made me play with a neighbor’s son. I didn’t like that kid at all, by the way. He was constantly pulling my hair and claimed I looked like a “lesbeean” in my pink clothes. I had no idea what that word meant. That was the way I had been raised.

I grew older and the friends around me started getting boyfriends. My mum was constantly asking if I had one too. I felt there was something wrong with me because I didn’t want one! After she had asked me that same old question many times enough, I finally gave up and asked a male friend of mine if we could go on a date. He said yes, and all of a sudden I had my first boyfriend. He was actually fairly nice, and we did like the same kind of movies, so picking a date spot was pretty easy. But it didn’t take him long to say he knew I didn’t like him that way. He was right, though, and so I experienced my first “break up”.

After a while, I started feeling the pressure of getting another boyfriend. The same thing happened as with the previous guy; we broke up due to the lack of chemistry.

Life went on, but the dating life started getting more challenging: I was already 18 and the people around me had a sex life. I had such a hard time imagining me doing it, and I even thought at one point I might have been an ace. Then I met a guy I genuinely liked and decided: “heck it. It’s not a big deal, so let’s just get it done.” And so we did. And it was absolutely awful. I blamed the fact that it was my first time, because of course I had heard that it’s supposed to hurt and all that stuff. But in reality, it was more than that. I felt extremely uncomfortable, awkward, vulnerable, even scared. I felt like I shouldn’t have been there, I just wanted to leave as soon as it started!

Well, it’s safe to say it didn’t happen with that guy again. He was surprisingly understanding when I tried to explain my feelings, though, and he too suggested I might be a-sexual. I just admitted: yeah, it’s possible. However, I had started doubting that because one time, when I went to get a casual cup of coffee with this same ex boyfriend of mine, I noticed that our heads were turning in the same direction when a good looking woman passed us. I had tried to deny it, but it was getting harder: I was attracted to women.

The time at the university was a new beginning to me. I met a lot of people. New, more open minded people. I finally learned to accept that women loving women really was a thing, and it opened a new world to me. I let myself have crushes, and sometimes when things got “wild”, I might even have kissed another woman. My mother’s conservative voice was nagging in my head regularly, but I learned to tune it down.

But there was one specific encounter that I will never forget. In my first architecture class I saw a pretty, blonde haired and blue eyed girl. She seemed shy at first, dressed in black, avoiding eye contact, trying to make her already small frame even smaller. But then the professor started asking questions and suddenly she woke up, a fire in her eyes when she started debating with the professor on some topic that was so advanced I didn’t even understand it. And I had always thought I knew plenty about architecture. The debate had to end at some point so the professor could go back to her regularly scheduled teaching, but the girl stayed in the classroom afterwards and continued the conversation. I was both impressed and intimidated by her.

It turned out, that was definitely not the last time I saw that girl. Not too long after, I was put into the same group with her when we were doing group assignments and – we got into a fight. As I had suspected from the moment I saw her, our ideas of architecture in general were so different that we had a very hard time finding a common ground. She thought alchemy could make everything 100% easier, I claimed it was hocus pocus. Our fight got so bad that at the end of one group session she told me she would talk to the professor the next day and ask to join another group.

She never got that far though; that same night my cat went missing and I was searching for him from the campus area for a long while. Finally, I found him in a tree, but he didn’t want to come down. I tried treats, I tried toys, but no luck. I was too afraid to climb after him because I was sure the branches would have broken under my weight. Suddenly, the blonde girl appeared and asked me what was wrong. I showed her the cat on the tree and without hesitation she started climbing like a ninja. At that point I was wondering if there was anything that girl couldn’t do. She caught my kitty and brought him down to me, acting like a whole different person compared to a couple of hours earlier. I asked why she was like that, and she simply said “what happens in the classroom, stays in the classroom”.

I decided to invite this weird girl for a cup of tea as a thank you for saving my cat and because I felt there was so much about her I didn’t know yet. She had made me so curious. We had a lot of fun talking about anything non school related, and she didn’t leave for several hours. I introduced her to my cats, and she showed pics of her dog. When she was finally leaving, she tugged my hair a bit, looked straight into my eyes, and said “you’re not so bad, after all, Kitty.” Someone else might have gotten offended, but I saw her expression, and knew it was her way of saying “we are friends now, like it or not.” Oh, and she didn’t change her group after all.

It would be nice to say my relationship issues were over once I started uni, but that’s not true. I wasn’t really seeing anyone for a long while, while my friendship with Emma deepened, starting some rumors among the people around me. Eventually, my mum heard I may be seeing a girl from the uni and she called me home for a talk. I took Emma with me, or rather, she insisted she come. With her support, I told her that yes, I may be into girls, but no, we are not dating. My mother wasn’t happy with that announcement, telling me I was not welcome back home unless I “changed my mind about women”. Emma dragged me into her car, but she herself went back to tell a couple of well-chosen words to my mother, and when she came back, she was having a devilish smile on her face. She claimed that habit was simply in her Elric blood, which I soon realized was true when she introduced me to her family. They were incredible people, so different from my family. Getting distance between me and my parents was not an easy decision, but it’s one I now understand was necessary for my happiness.

A couple of years later, another incident happened: I was on the swimming team and one day decided to train with Emma, who, while not as fast as I am, made up for it with her stamina. Unfortunately, some guys from the men’s team were at the hall at the same time with us, and one of them started hitting on me. I had a hard time getting rid of him because he kept insisting I should go out with him, even blocking my way at one point. It started getting quite scary, so Emma, bless her, came to my rescue. She wrapped her arm around my waist and planted a kiss on my cheek, claiming I was her girlfriend, and if the guys wanted to have something to do with me, she’d be ready to fight. I have no doubt she would. I have heard stories of her dad’s past…

Anyway, one of the assholes said he wanted more proof so Emma didn’t hesitate. She kissed me straight on the mouth and I kept seeing stars for a minute. Once the stars were gone, I noticed we were already in the shower room (apparently Emma had dragged me there) and she apologized for acting like that. I think my answer was just incoherent blabbering, because honestly, I was just wishing she would do it again. Because in that moment I knew I was in love with Emma Rockbell-Elric.

A few years went by and I was in a constant state of suffering because I could not tell her how I felt. I had seen Emma flirting with a lot of other people, both girls and boys, so I was positive the kiss had not meant anything, and I couldn’t risk our friendship. But eventually, we decided to go on a trip, just the two of us, and little did we know that trip would change everything. It all started innocently. We were supposed to just go down to the hotel bar for a couple of drinks and maybe dance a bit, but… something turned off in my brain. Before I knew it, we were kissing, and back in our room, and… it was the best evening of my life. But then… then she broke my heart.

Now, Emma, if you’re reading this, don’t worry. I know why you did what you did, and you’ve been forgiven a long time ago. Maybe I just added that here to remind people that relationships require work, because no one is perfect, but we did solve our issues, and everything’s better than fine now. We are now living together and having our own kids, aka our pets. Thanks to my girlfriend, I’ve learned to accept myself the way I am, and I have also found myself a new supportive family who really cares about me, and is there for me when I need it. So, my message to people in need of help is: it will get better. Just be who you are, because you’re amazing. That’s what Emma tells me.
