Well, if he wanted to get technical about it. Steve just stared at him for a few seconds. Was this a trap or was he having a bit of a moment? The Cap was having a difficult time weighing the two options. He wet his lips, brows pinched together as he idly gesticulated with a pen.“Are you talking about birds? Steve knew jokes were going to come out of showing Tony pictures of himself before the serum. He looked tiny and delicate. No one believed he was worthy or strong enough to fight in the war.

Steve didn’t look up from his sketchbook when he tossed the question out there between them. They’d been sitting together in a comfortable silence before the question was posed. Tony tinkering as always and Steve sketching different figures that looked an awful lot like the one and only Iron Man.

Steve had started to draw a child when he began to imagine Tony interacting with children. The man was so good with kids that it had, honestly, caught Steve off guard. He was ashamed to admit that, initially, he thought Tony would detest children.

Nothing could be farther from the truth. Tony had a way with kids. He didn’t belittle them or treat them as lesser. He talked to them as equals and kids usually responded well to that.

The eyes of the child that he was drawing started to look dark and large with heavy eyelashes...

Steve kept his eyes on the penciled, imaginary child as Tony answered. Only after he finished did Steve look up in mild shock.Some people weren’t meant to have children? Did Tony really think he wasn’t meant to have kids

“But you’d be so good at it,” Steve responded quickly.

Tony had a way of shaking things up; it showed up in his work, his builds, his notorious meetings, and...today it showed up in the way his hand made contact with Steve’s posterior. The soldier, previously lost in his phone, stood a bit straighter afterwords. 

He paused in his stride, taking into account just who happened to be walking past...feigning innocence it seemed. Steve took a millisecond to scan the rest of his surroundings. So unless Jarvis had a secret arm installed, Stark was the culprit here. he waited for something, for Stark to look back at him...or spout off one of those rapid fire quips that he seemed to have on hand all the time.He was met with silence, which only deepened his confusion, but also solidified the flattery.

Looking down at it and then back up at Tony he exhaled and then walked back to the bar, setting it by a crystal decanter he’d set out expecting Stark after he saw the news. 

“ Beside’s, retirement’s not so bad. Think about it. You have so much time to do virtually anything.” And he couldn’t have meant that more. As he poured two glasses of scotch, neat, he motioned for Tony to follow him out on to the veranda, handing him his drink as they looked out over the city. 

After a while, he broke the sentimental silence to say, “ Tony, you’ll always be Iron Man. Just like I’ll always be Mr. Fantastic. But it’s only part of who we are and we’ve done what we needed to do when it was asked of us. Look at our world. We didn’t just dream of something our whole lives or talk about it, we did something. We made a difference and when we’re gone most importantly people will be inspired to do the right thing because of us. Because we believed we could make a difference. And whether or not that’s what you always imagined your legacy to be or whether you’re ready to pass on the mantle, eventually it’ll happen. We all die someday. It’s just your call to say when you’re done. When you’ve done all you wanted or could possibly do. And regardless of whether that’s today or tomorrow, you’ll know. So if you’re not done — fine don’t be done. But don’t be afraid of what happens after. We’ve left the world in pretty good shape. All we can do now is hope for the best knowing we’ve done all we could do.”
