Chapter 34 Preview

I've been holding back on posting this until I got through the handful of scenes I was struggling with in Chapter 35. I wanted to make sure that chapter was sound before moving forward... for reasons.

I'm so glad that everyone enjoyed the last couple of chapters. :D

This off-season is going to be a long one, I hope you're all ready for it!

Yuuri skated around the edge of the rink. It was strange having this much ice to himself again, but he loved not having to constrain his work to a smaller patch or, if he was lucky, half a rink. Of course it cost more, but it was only for a month off and on while he was in Tokyo; not even really a month, since most of his ice time would be at practice rinks near the various ice shows. He wasn’t working on choreography for his season yet, so he just needed this ice time to maintain his conditioning.

He left Michigan the day after his Biology final, which he probably could have gotten away with not taking at all and just dropping the grade for, but he preferred to be able to have some wiggle room. Phichit hadn’t been too happy with him, since that meant he had to go through the whole last month of school with Celestino checking up on him all the time.

Yuuri said he had it worse, knowing full well he didn’t, but it felt worse; he had to leave Vicchan for a whole month while he worked in Japan. And on top of that, he didn’t even really have time to go to Hatsetsu to get his well-deserved katsudon for winning All Japan nationals. Not that he was feeling very deserving of katsudon after the season he’d had.

He sighed, refocused on what he was doing, and went into a layback spin before bringing his leg up behind him into a Bielmann.

The sound of loud clapping brought him out of his skating, and he stopped and looked over to the edge. Even squinting, he still had no idea who was over there. This was supposed to be a closed session, but it didn’t mean that no one knew where he was. The JSF knew, Alexei knew because he was coming into Tokyo the next day to do some jumping work with him, Shuji knew since Yuuri was staying with him, and his manager, Hirano-san, knew as well.

Well, and Celestino and Kai and Phichit, but they were all in Detroit.

He finally gave up trying to make out the blurry figure and skated over to where he left his glasses.

“Your skating is looking a lot better than it was in December, Yuuri.”

Yuuri hadn’t even managed to get his glasses on, but he already knew who was standing there. “Shouta! Are you training in Tokyo now?” Yuuri smiled as Shouta came into focus.

A Meta in Makkachin Name Meaning

Recently, I had been obsessed with Yuri!!! on ICE. What a good cure of depression. It’s a ray of hope for the despair reality we face everyday. It encourage me to not afraid of opening up myself more, to live and love to my fullest. Of course, when your feelings are too much to contain inside, the only outlet is to write what you feels. So I decide to write a meta about this lovely poodle and its meaning in YOI narratives.

Makkachin

Japanese: マッカチン

Family: Viktor Nikiforov (owner) & Yuuri Katsuki (co-owner)

Name meaning:

According to Kubo Mitsurou-sensei, creator of Yuri!!! on Ice, Viktor chose the name ‘Makkachin’ based on the feeling of the language, so there’s no particular origin. [x]

However, we know that Viktor is Extra in language usage for his characterization. Viktor is at least fluent in 3 different languages (Russian, English and French), yet he chose his gold-winning free skate “Stammi Viccino, Non Te Ne Andare” (Stay Close To Me, And Don’t Leave) to be expressed in Italian [x], and created routines based on Greek conception of love: “Eros” inspired by Spanish dance and “Agape” whose lyric was sung in Latin [x]. After meeting Yuuri, you could bet that he also learn Japanese, his beloved Yuuri’s native language. That is how much extra Viktor is.

Whenever Viktor is “speaking Japanese,” his speech is foreigner-accented. His pronunciation is off in places and the rhythm isn’t that of a native or solidly fluent japanese speaker. For example, his “ohayo gozaimasu” to the fisherman (EP2), his slogan to promote Hasetsu (EP3), his “ganba” to Yurio (EP8), his “i’m cold, please draw a bath” to Yuuri (EP10).

It’s one thing to learn a different language by speaking. Victor took it to next level by changing his phone setting.

Makkachin is made up as part of Viktor’s characterization. Hence the name must made up from words whose meanings are related to his characterization.

Makkachin isn’t the first dog whose name is mentioned on YOI, the first one is Vicchan, Yuuri’s toy poodle dog. 

Notice the familiar of letters that made up both name:

MaKKa and -CHIN

ViCC and -CHAN

We all know that the letter K is the alternative version of the letter C in Japanese/English language translated from Russian.

The term “-chin” and “-chan” are the Japanese honorific suffix attached to name as endearment. “-chin” is another cutesy way of “-chan”.

If it hadn’t convinced you yet, Hiroko, Yuuri’s mom, aka Kubo-sensei’s self-inserted character, called Viktor, “Vicchan”, the same name as Yuuri’s poodle. Hence you have to make a connection in relation of those names.

The only word in puzzle is Makka. What does Makka mean in term of English? Or it’s derivative from another word that contain the “makka” word just like “vic” from “victor”?

If “makka” is a stand-alone word,

"Makka” in Japanese means “Deep Red” (kanji, 真っ赤) (higanara, まっか) as in Viktor’s theme color.

See how the word “ Beet-Red” used in the episode title made up from higanara word “maa” (まっ) (meaning “extra”) and kanji word “aka” (赤) (meaning “red”)

I did wonder the use of higanara in the title instead of the usual kanji. I think it’s a nod to Makkachin as his name is referred in katakana, instead of higanara, to express the pronunciation of Western foreign words. Because Makkachin is an extension of Viktor’s characterization; hence, the title not only referred Yuuri’s nose-bleeding red face, but also implied Viktor’s “Face” aka His Coach Debut with Makkachin version of tissue box.

Another example is Mari’s name (真利) whose first kanji “ma” (真) is the same as Makka (真っ赤) and second kanji “ri” (利) is the same as Yuuri (勇利). 

Mari is THE connection between Yuuri and Vicchan, Makkachin, and Viktor. She is the one who took care of Vicchan (EP1), Makkachin (EP8) and Viktor (EP2) when Yuuri wasn’t present. She’s the one who dubbed Yuri Plisetsky, “Yurio”. She’s Yurio’s fangirl just like both Viktor and Yuuri adore Yurio as he’s also the connection in their podium family in term of skating.

“Makka” in Hindi means “Corn”. Well because corn is golden and Victor likes (to kiss) gold. Meanwhile, “chin” in Franco-Provençal language (native to Italy, France & Switzerland) means “dog”. So in mash-up language, Makkachin means “corndog”.

In my headcanon, Viktor the nerd might look up Google Translate for “gold” in variation of language for his dog’s name. You know how Google Translate works. As a result it generated a random relative word instead of the synonym translation. He might chose Makkachin just because it sounds Russian. By the time he check out the meaning, the name had stuck. In a feeling of language, Viktor is likely to name his dog as “goldie”, but he messed up so it stuck as “corndog”. But no one will know because Makkachin is a made-up mesh-up word from two language no one know about. Viktor is a genius after all.

There’s another layer of language and it’s innuendo. Because “gold” in Japanese is “kin”. Remember the term “something round and gold” in innuendo implies the word “kintama” meaning “testicles” while “chinchin” in Japanese means “penis”. So basically the feeling of language in term of Makkachin is Viktor’s dick in metaphor.

It seems plausible because in the very first episode, the character who greeted Yuuri first by jumping on top him is Makkachin, then later mirrored by Viktor’s nudity (including his dick out) greeting Yuuri.

Makka is variation of Arabic word “mecca” meaning as in “a place of interest”. 

At first, I couldn’t figure out what “place of interest” means and why Makka could be implied as a “place”. Then I remember this scene where Viktor liken the seagull presence to his hometown, Saint Petersburg. 

The beach scene is the first emotional scene we had between Yuuri and Viktor where they opened up and shared the vulnerable part of themselves to each other. The scene where Makkachin presented as a witness to their emotional connection to each other.

Thus, I think that Makkachin as a “place of interest” is liken as a “landmark” or “milestone” in Victor and Yuuri’s relationship. Any scenes where Makkachin presents together with Viktor and Yuuri are important emotionally.

In the same episode after the emotional beach scene, there is another iconic scene where Makkachin emphasized his presence together with Victor and Yuuri. It’s when Yuuri barged in Viktor’s bedroom at night on purpose and stepped on Makkachin’s tail accidentally. When I watched this scene for the first time, I giggled because it’s so natural that Yuuri was too hurried to look where his feet landed when he jumped on Viktor’s bed. However, after watching the scene for nth times, I did wonder why the director wanted to animate this scene where Makkachin’s’ tail got stepped on by Yuuri at all. I seems so unnecessary for the plot at that moment as Yuuri’s expression and body language indicated enough the hurry and excitement. 

However, remember how it started in that episode, where Yuuri woke up late in his bed room and startled Makkachin which somehow slept together with him. 

The episode reached its bookend when Yuuri stayed up late to wait for the completed “Yuri on Ice” demo. Yuuri couldn’t wait until morning, so he barge in Viktor’s bedroom in the middle of the night so Viktor could listen to the song representing Yuuri’s career in figure skating (also encompassing of his life and love). He stepped on the first “milestone” in the relationship between him and Viktor (aka Makkachin) by sharing “Yuri on ICE” song with Victor.

Another emotional scene is the reunion at the airport between Viktor and Yuuri. Makkachin once again barked to alert Yuuri his presence. 

Yuuri finally got the hug he yearned from Victor. He even asked Viktor for the marriage proposal and Viktor accepted.

Mecca is known as a city of western Saudi Arabia near the coast of the Red Sea. The birthplace of Muhammad, it is the holiest city of Islam and a pilgrimage site for devout Muslims. You can think the word “mecca” in terms of your “solitude sanctuary”. Sound fitting for the relationship between Viktor and Makkachin right?
