(Surprisingly, most of these songs are not whumpy, some of them are straight out religious, but…well, when my PoV character is an epic hero and his story is filled with struggle…there you go.)

Anyway, as with most of my posts, it varies by character.

For Arjun:

Naturally, the Lannister theme tracks from Game of Thrones OST, because duh.

Remember from Troy (2004)- Jaime wants to be remembered as a knight, and I see a lot of parallels between Achilles in the movie and him.

Don’t Deserve Your Love by Plumb-I do think Jaime has rather low self-esteem (I know this song is supposed to be addressed to God, but assuming it is addressed to a human, by someone, it can be read as that)

Whumpmas in July 2024 day 11: Whumpy daydreaming songs

Aight, before we get started here, I’m going to set some boundaries.

I use a lot of song lyrics in the titles of my fics. That doesn’t mean the piece of music is related to whump or even related to the features of the story. Sometimes I’ll randomly add them as I go to post the fic and realize I forgot to title it. And sometimes I hear a specific lyric in a song and have to write a story to go with it because it sounds perfect.

I know a few songs with outright whumpy lyrics. I consider those to be more like inside-joke trivia items than writing inspiration.

Lyrics that hit me and stir my imagination are often related to angst or inner demons. I will tell you about some of them, but be aware that they can be difficult listens.

I create specific playlists for my novels and novellas, and I post them as front matter for each piece. My fanfic novellas are Tenement Falls, Beautiful Oblivion, and Ignite your Bones. They all contain intense angst, so tread carefully. You can find a teaser for each in my blog archive, and they’re posted in full on AO3.

Songs with sick (as in feeling/being physically ill) in the lyrics:

Inside Out by Eve 6 (no, the title is not Beautiful Oblivion)

Songs and artists that inspire big angst:

Shinedown, in general. A ton of their songs are what could be classified as “breakup songs.” They have many lyrics about being angry and needing to move on. Call Me is permanently off my list of listens; I accidentally made it my theme song in a crisis. (I’ve done that a few times over…whoops.)

Remedy by Thirty Seconds to Mars. This is another of the accidental theme songs. It’s kind of like the singer is offering to be the listener’s support person? Shoulder to cry on? It’s permanently off my listen list too.

I Hope You’re Happy by Blue October. This is the last accidental theme song (I promise), and this one makes me emotional just to think about. Please don’t ask. It’s about wishing someone well after they’ve gone away. No more to say.

Zombie (the Bad Wolves version) is a great classic angst song.

Loser by Beck is quite humorous to me, but it’s great for dealing with (or being) a hot mess.

Losing My Religion (originally by R.E.M., but grab the Glee cover if you can. Cory Monteith does a hauntingly good job.) Mostly because I was weirdly affected by his passing, but it’s also about giving up hope.

Bonus round:

Hot Blooded by Foreigner. You all probably know it, but that’s the proper name of the song (If you google the chorus lyrics, you’ll never find it—too many other associations). Pull it up on YouTube. The front man is very impassioned. And there’s pair of very tight white jeans involved… Anyway, the lyric is:

Whumpmas in July: Day 11

Whumpy Daydreaming Songs

The first song that comes to mind when I think of whumpy music is "The Red Means I Love You" by Madds Buckley. It's a super dramatic, jazzy song, and the lyrics really capture the 'obsessive whumper' trope.

I also tend to use lullabies in whump writing a lot, particularly in caretaking scenes. I am a sucker for Disney lullabies, in particular "La La Lu" from Lady and the Tramp and "Baby Mine" from Dumbo.

Lastly, "Exit Music (For A Film)" by Radiohead gives me major whump vibes. I have a very specific image in my mind when I listen to it of an escape where only one of two captives makes it out alive, and I swear the lyrics fit this narrative perfectly.

oh fuck, i haven’t thought about this in a while… 😍😍😍

i have often daydreamed to “can you feel my heart?” by bring me the horizon, it’s very angsty and intense and the beat is very screamy 😍🥺 also, of course, “once” by brad caleb kane, is a classic whump song to me and to others! i personally adore “st. lawrence river” by david usher and it feels so deeply angst-ridden to imagine scenarios to. 😭 oh also, of course, “bones bad bones” by asbjørn and also “the river, the woods” by astronautilus 😍

a lot of evanescence songs feel so whumpy to me?? particularly stuff like “snow white queen”. also, the band within temptation has several sad and dramatic songs that i would imagine Scenarios to, “angels” being especially memorable (not to mention the music video is pure whump holy shit). the band red is very whumpy to me also, especially their early stuff? 💖

a lot of these choices are very nostalgic for me but they still give me lots of whumperflies and i think they deserve checking out!!😈😈😈🥺🥺🥺

Do you have a preference in which type of media the whump is in? (For example between books or live action movies or...). And why is that?

Not really? Some of them are easier to enjoy than others i guess. I really like animated stuff, music and writing. If i had to explain id say its because in movies for example they very rarely go to the lengths i wish they went to, usually just a quick scene with a drop of blood running down their forehead and a mildly pained look and thats about it, while in writing or animation its more depictive or exaggerated respectively. Music is just a whole other category for me, when it hits im obsessed and listen to that one song the whole week, but if it doesn't hit immediately i probably wont even get halfway through it. It could be oc food, vibes, a rly good earwormy melody, just the right whumpy lyrics or like one paragraph of a song i otherwise would not even listen to hitting way too perfectly and giving me a daydream scenario or something!

But no matter the medium, if i like it i like it, and if i dont i dont and it's entirely random which it is at any given time!

gosh I'm normally not one to write to music (or get inspiration from music for my WIPs) but Never Let Me Go (Florence + the Machine) has done something to my brain.

So I have like 16+ WIPs and, of course, some are higher priority than others. And I have this one WIP (placeholder name: WIPX) which is really low down on the priority list. It was basically just a sort of whumpy idea I daydreamed about once and thought might be fun to revisit one day. But I wasn't particularly attached to any of the characters/worldbuilding yet and the plot was pretty simple and underdeveloped. I still fully expect this story to be a short standalone.

But GOD does Never Let Me Go fit the vibes so fucking well. Religious symbolism, ocean imagery, ANGST. I'm mad it was not intended to be about mermaids because damn. It feels like it is about mermaids and temptation and drowning in bliss and being lured to your doom by your heart's darkest desires. aka mermaids.

And it's like the themes of this song (at least as I interpret them) are the missing puzzle piece of WIPX for me. Suddenly I have direction. I have ideas about how to tie all the threads I have set up into something that can build into a "single final confrontation". I am unequivocally certain of the imagery and vibes and themes and mood, of the "type of story" I want to tell.

And I didn't originally have any religious imagery in the WIP, although I did start flirting with the idea before I realized how apt a song Never Let Me Go is for this project. But damn, opening the story with a scene that takes place in a Catholic-inspired cathedral dripping with images of hellish mermaids reaching with long-nailed fingers toward the worshippers in the pews, as though to drag them from beneath the heavenly light of the stained glass windows into shadow. It just gives this WIP about a bunch of nepo babies who rescue a mermaid from a lab and end up on the run from their overcontrolling parents who are convinced the mermaid must have them in some sort of thrall, so much more depth.

Still trying to figure out what exactly it is implying, but there is a nice contrast that is tying into things that already exist in the WIP and it feels very rich for it.

Suddenly this WIP got bumped wayyy up the priority list.

Once I figure out the implications I shall be unstoppable. mwah hahaha

Favorite video game: I really like Oblivion and Assassin's Creed; I'll go with AC: Revelations, the third game in the Ezio trilogy. Broadly speaking I think the Ezio games are the best in the series (though I haven't yet played past AC3), but Revelations is set in İstanbul so it's way more fun for me because I can check out all the places I've been irl, and sometimes random characters yell at you in Turkish which is really funny to me now that I can understand them.

Favorite video game character: Yusuf from Revelations because he looks kind of like my brother lmao

Favorite movie or TV series: Shocking absolutely nobody who has ever looked at my main blog, Xena: Warrior Princess.

Favorite movie or TV series character: Xena herself, no question

Hobbies: leatherworking, writing, sketching, rock climbing

Obsessions: Have I mentioned Xena yet? Because whenever I'm not thinking about my OCs, I'm thinking about Xena.

Favorite genre/type of background music for whump daydreams: Usually I listen to specific songs/playlists for my OCs, since my whump daydreams tend to be about specific characters. Genre is kind of all over the place, but tends to be the type of music I would describe as "vibes" (which I'm aware does not narrow it down at all, especially given I probably have a different definition of vibing music than most).

Favorite whump trope: Ough I'm supposed to just pick one?! OK not necessarily my favorite, but one I like a lot, is whumpees whose trauma turns them into whumpers. Cycles of abuse and whatnot.

Favorite whump pairing: Edit: whoops forgot to answer this one. Uhhh can I put my own OCs? Because if so, Elvan and Asenath; more broadly though any pairing where one person gets hurt and the other person goes feral in response, be it out of defense or revenge.

First time you experienced whumperflies: That scene in Disney's Aladdin where Alaadin is in a prison cell with his wrists shackled to the wall above his head. I haven't seen that movie since I was a very little kid but that's the one scene that stuck in my mind haha

Favorite whump scene from a piece of media: A couple scenes jump to mind from Xena. The first is actually from the show Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, of which Xena: Warrior Princess is a spin-off. The episode is called "The Gauntlet" and is one of the episodes that introduces Xena as a character. As the title implies, the climax of the episode is when Xena's general overthrows her and takes her army, and her own soldiers make her run the gauntlet. Joseph LoDuca has my entire heart and soul for the soundtrack in that scene, and the direction is fuckin impeccable. The other scene is from season 6 of Xena's own show, an episode titled "Who's Gurkhan?" in which (for various plot reasons I won't get into here) Xena and Gabrielle both separately sell themselves into slavery to a sultan; Gabrielle tries to assassinate the sultan but Xena sees her about to go for him and knocks her out cold, stealing the knife, so that they would think it was her instead of Gabrielle; she also plays it off as if she was attacking Gabrielle out of jealousy, rather than there being any threat to the sultan. Anyway the relevant bit is that Xena gets taken to the dungeons and tortured at length, mostly just getting the absolute shit beat out of her, including while being hung upside down by shackles on her ankles. 10/10 incredible whump tbh, while there she also hallucinates Gabrielle bellydancing in front of her because that show is gay as all fuck.

A book you would recommend, whump or not: I would highly recommend the historical fiction Lady Slayers series by Lana Popović! There are two books (so far); Blood Countess, about Erzsébet Báthory, and Poison Priestess, about Catherine Monvoisin. They're overtly queer and very very well written (and decently whumpy tbh).

It’s a really good song and both the song itself and the music video are very whumpy, so I’d strongly suggest you go check out his music if only for that one song. His other songs and covers are good as well. It’s just that one song is my favorite when it comes to whump.
