Season’s Beatings Info And FAQ!

Hey friends! This is the official information post for the event, plus answers to the questions that have been popping up!

What Is This Event?

Season’s Beatings (formerly Saint Whumpolas) is a gift exchange in the style of a Secret Santa. Everyone who signs up will both give and receive a whumpy gift based on their OCs!

How Does It Work?

When you sign up for the event, you will be paired with two people- one person who you will make a gift for, and one person who will make a gift for you. You’ll be sent an ask with your gift person’s OC/story/favorite trope/disliked tropes information, and you’ll use that to create something amazing for them! Meanwhile, your own gifter will be making something wonderful using your OCs! I’ll collect all the gifts here, and on Christmas Day, everyone will receive their gifts!

When Does It Start?

I’m hoping to have the sign-up form finished this weekend. Stay tuned!

Sign-ups will close on November 28. I’ll hopefully have everyone paired up by December 1.

The deadline to send in your gifts will be December 25, giving everyone three weeks and a bit to complete their gifts, and five days for the standby people to fill in if necessary.

Gifts will be sent out on December 31!

What Makes A Gift?

A gift can be anything! Art, writing, moodboards, other types of art- anything you can think of! There’s only three restrictions- for writers, gifts have to be 500 words minimum (no maximum!). You’ve got to put at least some effort into your gift- five minutes to make a vaguely whumpy meme edit is not going to cut it. And this event is SFW only, so please make your gifts accordingly. (For the purposes of this event, NSFW is anything sexual- so implications, references, fade-to-black, etc., should all be left out.)

Who Can Join?

For this year, the event is open to OC whumpers only. The holiday season is very busy for me this year, and I’m not able to accommodate fandom whump in this style of event right now. However, if anyone would like to create a similar event for fandom whumpers, they have my blessing and I’ll be happy to offer assistance!

Random thoughts/ Rant?

Trying to figure out what to draw for a Christmas post or two. I mean, I’ll probably write a snippet too, but trying to decide if I should draw a whumpy Christmas or a non whumpy Christmas. I could do both if I’m not busy. But I might want to color it too and coloring takes me forever.

So here’s my thinking. I can either do a cute Christmas post with a couple. Like Rojan and Lilith or two people I’m planning to pair up in the future. OR I can do a whumpy Christmas where one of my whumpees gets a very festive whump experience because apparently they work year round and I’m a cruel God to them :)

I am so boring I almost want to apologise for it. My url is just my nickname and the year I was born (yes, I am old).

I don't really use my sideblogs much. I've got one that I haven't used for years that I used to post some of my photography on @hal-photography. I've got one for an old UK convention that folded during the pandemic but that I used to do the marketing for @writerconuk and I've got a whump blog that I use to reblog my favourite whumpy gifs so that they're easy to find. Not sharing that one because I do not wish to be Perceived.

3. how long have you been on tumblr?

My original blog was set up in 2010. I had to nuke it after some unpleasantness in the Supernatural fandom (isn't it always SPN) and I've had this current once since 2011 I think

4. do you have a queue tag?

Nah, I don't queue things as a general rule. I do a bunch of reblogging first thing in the morning while I'm scrolling in bed and that's more or less it

5. why did you start your blog in the first place?

I was looking for a new home after Livejournal finally properly died and most fandom folk were here at that time

6. why did you choose your icon/pfp?

It's a piece of DMBJ art that my housemate comissioned as a Christmas present a couple of years ago. I love it, and it was made specifically for me, so I made it my header and my icon

7. why did you choose your header?

This RDJ/Paul Bettany exchange I ripped from Twitter. I have no idea why it ended up with 20k notes

I honestly have no idea. Lots.

Wow this thing is really exposing me. 1908. I generally follow back so long as I can see that the person is an active fandom blog where we have at least one fandom in common.

I mostly shitpost in the tags

Generally for an hour in the morning before I get up and then however long it takes me to liveblog my next drama episode in the evening

No, I don't think so. Not that I can remember anyway. I generally try and avoid conflict and if someone is annoying me I just block them and/or vent about it in a safe space with friends I trust.

15. how do you feel about ‘you need to reblog this’ posts

Makes me less inclined to reblog them tbh. Don't tell me what to do in my own house.

16. do you like tag games?

I am so bad at remembering to do them when I get tagged (see above about only really being on tumblr for an hour a day) but I do appreciate it every time someone thinks of me

Yeah, same as above. I love them but I am crap at remembering to answer the asks. I'm very sorry.

I'm not sure I could name anyone who is tumblr famous beyond the actual celebrities who hang out here (like Lynda Carter)

I have mutuals I admire and wish I was brave enough to talk to more but I wouldn't really call them crushes. As an aroace I don't really do crushes.

My dad got branding irons for Christmas for his steaks. So me and my mom were branding stuff tonight. Mmm so many whumpy thoughts. Also branding in general is super fun. It’s like arts and crafts but with fire and metal.

➛ OC Deep Dive: Angelina

◆ This is actually Angelina's introduction :) some may remember her as "Christmas Whumpee".

What common/uncommon fear do they have?

Angelina has been terrified of bugs since she was a little kid.

With her whumpers, she started fearing pretty much everything a little bit... after all, everything can be used to hurt someone, she saw it happening a lot. So the more seemingly useless things (like decor) a room has, the more stressed/fearful she gets.

Do they have any pet peeves?

Defiance. She finds it annoying and dumb, no matter how little or to who the defiance is aimed at. "All defiant whumpees get killed eventually, why does no one think with their heads instead of their pride?"

Twisting the nose to food is defiance. Speaking too loudly is defiance. Eating loudly and leaving lights on, too. Making your presence known in any unpleasant way is defiance. And she finds it annoying and dumb.

What are 3 items you can find in their bedroom?

A little golden bracelet she got from one of her whumpers the first time she was called "the favorite". A sketch book full of dark, whumpy drawings. A pair of glasses from a whumpee that escaped :)

What do they notice first in a person?

How strong and observant they are. To see if she can struggle free on a fight or take them down, and to see how sly she has to be around them.

Everyone. She does that with everyone. A child, a nurse, a waiter, a cop, a whumper, a caretaker, a bystander, someone who simply looks at her or walks past her.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how high is their pain tolerance?

Physical? 3, Angelina is not physically hurt often, she did not build up a good tolerance. She does have a very good breathing control, tho, from being suffocated. Emotional pain? 10/10, Angelina is very emotionally resilient.

Do they go into fight or flight mode when under pressure? (or freeze and fawn)

Fawn, definitely. Fighting, fleeing or freezing would have gotten her killed. The only way to survive and spare pain is to appease whoever can hurt her.

When the threat is low, or there's no one to appease, she goes into freeze or flop.

What animal represents them best?

A cat. I can't explain. She's just... cat. Black cat. The energy, the attentiveness, the stare. Just... black cat. Yeah.

How would a stranger likely describe them?

"A shy looking young woman. Real friendly and pleasant to speak to, but I didn't even see her until she was right next to me." And that's all. It's hard for a stranger to notice more than that, she made sure of it.

Do they have any hobbies?

Drawing and speaking to herself. It's what she's allowed to do alone.

The other "hobbies" are with her whumpers, and she faces it like tasks or challanges to survive and get good things, so... not hobbies.

Just an extra thing. Angelina got that name because someone commented on her art that she looked like Silent Hill 2's Angela. I finished this one just a few days ago and I had such a good time writing it! It also may very well be my last major TMA work (unless the TMA muse returns to me at some point) and I'm happy with it being the capstone on my multi-chapter TMA experience 💜

This fic surpassed 1.5k kudos recently and I never expected it to 😂 it's the silliest fic I think I've ever written, given that I usually trend towards angst and whump, and I'm glad that people enjoyed it!

Fic I’m Most Proud Of: whisky old fashioned sour, Malevolent, 58.5k words

I love whisky 💜 this fic is my baby at the moment, ngl, and I'm so excited to wrap it up in the next month or two (depending on how fast I write). People have made some truly spectacular art for it that continues to blow me away every time I see it, and the community has been so wonderful and encouraging over this AU that I thought nobody would really find interesting other than me 💕

Fic I Wish Had Gotten More Attention: cicatrix, Malevolent, 4.7k words

I get why this one didn't get a lot of attention--it's a niche AU (a daemon AU) that's rather whumpy, and I posted it at a weird time. Still, it was (and still is) a concept that really excited me, and I still wish it had gotten a bit more attention. Oh well! That happens sometimes. I like to think that I've gotten more resilient about writing weird niche things that will get like 5 comments and 20 kudos max XD

Fic That Challenged Me The Most: Fata Morgana, The Magnus Archives, 41.7k words

I wouldn't necessarily say that any of the things I wrote this year were particularly challenging (unless you count the HTML stuff in whisky 😂). However, I did have a super rough time starting this fic. It really did not want to get off the ground for whatever reason, and it fought me hard for the first couple of chapters. It was pretty smooth sailing after that though, and I'm proud of the final product!

Favorite Quote/Passage: I always struggle with this question because I forget what I've written beyond what I wrote like. Yesterday lol. So I think I'll just pick a selection of lines I enjoy!

It’s Christmastime, whump community! And Saint Whumpolas, patron saint of whump, is looking forward to the fun! If you’re sighing at how un-whumpy the presents under your tree seem to be, if your gingerbread dungeon dreams became a plain old gingerbread house, if your stocking isn’t stuffed with hurt and maybe some comfort…then this is the event for you!

This is Saint Whumpolas’ Whumpy Secret Santa, a whump community event where whump creators anonymously gift writing/art to each other and try to guess who’s got who!

How It Works:

Step 1. Sign up for the event by December 5th

Step 2. Get assigned a fellow whump blog to make something for

Step 3. Send in your whump creation to Saint Whumpolas

Step 4. Saint Whumpolas will deliver all the presents on Christmas Eve! Try to guess which whump blog created a gift for you, and see your gift blog’s reaction to the present you made for them!

The Rules

• I’m cutting sign-ups off at midnight Mountain Time on December 5th. If we end up with an odd number of blogs, I’ll jump in to make sure everyone gets a gift- if you’d like to also volunteer to be on emergency standby instead of/in addition to signing up to make and receive a gift, let me know!

• Please don’t sign up if you can’t make something- we want everyone to get a gift!

• From December 5th on, you’ll get an ask in your inbox from this blog, letting you know who you’re making a gift for, their favorite tropes, and their dislikes/squicks- PLEASE MIND THEIR DISLIKES/SQUICKS. It will not be fun to get a triggering gift on Christmas. You don’t necessarily have to adhere to their favorite tropes, but keep them in mind as you write/draw/whatever.

• The deadline for gifts is at midnight Mountain Time on Christmas Eve. PLEASE HAVE YOUR GIFTS SENT IN BY THEN.

• Since part of the fun is going to be guessing who made each gift, please don’t post your gifts publicly! I’ll provide an email for you to send them to, and I’ll post them on this blog- the gift in your inbox will be the link to your present! (After the event is over and you’ve been guessed/revealed yourself, feel free to post your creation- gift blogs, you can absolutely reblog your gift once you’ve gotten it!)

• I’m gonna say that since this is a Christmas event, gifts must be SFW.

• I’m also gonna say that since this is my first go-round hosting an event, we’re gonna keep it to OC whumpees only for this year. It could get tricky if someone gets asked to write a fanfiction for a fandom they know nothing about, so for this year, OCs only.

• Minimum word count for writers is 500. You can go over as far as you want- I’m sure people would love to get a Lord Of The Rings-length epic in their inbox- but please have at least 500 words for your gift. I don’t know enough about art to put anything specific down for artists, but if you participate please make sure to put a little effort into your gift! (A meme you spent two minutes photoshopping, for example, does not count as a gift. Drawings, doodles, moodboards, comics- all acceptable.)

• For the first…hmm…fifty people to sign up, I will try to match you with a blog who shares your interests (that’s twenty-five pairs.) After that, it’ll be randomly assigned, just so I don’t get overwhelmed.

• Clearing up a few things: your gift is supposed to be a thing you make, be it art or writing or whatever, using your gift blog’s OCs. You’re basically gifting them fanfiction/fanart, and receiving fanfiction/fanart in return. Also, the blog you gift to will not be the same blog you receive a gift from. That way we keep the mystery bit.

• One more thing: I’ve gotten a couple asks and messages now from whump blogs who don’t use OCs. I’m not trying to exclude you guys. If I repeat this event next year I’ll make sure to come up with a way for y’all to join in. This year, though, I just can’t make that work- I have a lot going on, and I think keeping it to OCs only for this year will help me not get overloaded- the last thing I want is to have five hundred or more blogs sign up, get overwhelmed, and shut the whole thing down because I can’t handle that much this year. That being said, I have no problem if someone wants to set up a version of this for fandom whump creators this year. Y’all deserve Christmas fun too, and I’m sorry that I can’t be the one making that happen this Christmas. Next year if I repeat this, I’ll fix it so that it’s all one big event!

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who's been with me this year. Honestly this has been one of the worst years in my life and I'm not sure when things will get better but thank you to everyone that's stuck around. Who knew a community of whumpy people could be so sweet.

It was such a small act of kindness but it literally meant so much to me back then so thank you. You're the main reason I'm still here and didn't quit.

I saw the question about the LoM books (and for just having read the first I’m now pretty sure I won’t bother with the rest), and I was thinking, what about fanfictions on internet? Do you read them, and if yes, any that you particularly liked? :]

FANFIC THOUGH. *chefkiss* LoM fanfic is, on the whole, exceptionally well written. Glorious whump and h/c, many people getting Sam/Gene JUST right, and the gloriousness that is Sam/Gene/Annie OT3. It’s a wonderful fanfic world out there.

Recs, HMM. In general I would recommend that anyone checks out the lifein193 comm over on Livejournal, and check the rec tags. All of the fandom classics (still) live there, and have I believe also been mirrored to dreamwidth. Also check the “big bang” and “martian holiday” tags for masterpieces and lovely christmas fics/arts respectively!

A few authors I rec in general:

- Loz (especially “On The Edge of a Blade” and , “it;s just gravitational”)

- Nepthys

- severinne (LOTS of saucy smut there, you have been warned!)

- dakfinv (Sam!whump. Glorious, glorious whump. Just a word of advice, do NOT read “Steady As She Goes” in one sitting, like I did, because HO BOY)

And also, uhm, my own! 8D I’ve done a whole 16-chapter wing!fic AU in which a) wings are invisible unless you have wings yourself and b) Sam’s wings are TEENY TINY for Reasons; a long whumpy angsty fic titled “I Don’t Know What Went Wrong”, and some one-shots - you can find me right here. <3

I’d also recommend in general that you search by hits/kudos and not latest, because I honestly feel that the best (and longest!) fics are of the Olden Days of this fandom, and the popular ones are popular for a reason. Heed the warnings though, if you come across them!

90: talk about one of your favourite cities.

I absolutely love Leuven in Belgium. I was born there and lived there for a few years before leaving when I was around 6 or 7? So it’s just the most nostalgic place for me. I remember walking on the cobbled roads with my family on warm summer evenings looking for a restaurant, and getting the best nutella waffles from this little place on the corner of a street. I remember we used to sit at a cafe in one of the squares and we would wait for the clock to strike the hour because a little statue of a golden man would turn and ring the bell at the top of a building, and me and my siblings loved to watch it for the novelty. There was this toy shop with three floors that had ramps instead of stairs and it had the loveliest trinkets and a huge collection of rubber ducks of which I still own a few! (I have a cow duck, a devil duck, a batman duck, a robin duck, a hawkeye duck, a duck couple and two tiny ducks from there and I love them all dearly!) And the Christmas market there was so warm and lovely and I have such a vivid memory of walking round the stalls staring up at the lights with brand new earmuffs over my ears. There’s a biiiiiig big needle on another square in the middle of town with a fake giant beetle impaled on it which is just so valid and weird I love it. We used to go the market most weeks and my mum would get olives and lumpia and I didn’t like anything they sold when I was a kid but I would absolutely appreciate it all now ahahha

I freaking love Leuven I mustttt go back one day :’)
