Council of Geeks reviews and ranks everything Doctor Who!

One of the best speakers I've found on YouTube, Vera is great at doing piece to camera style reviews and talks about fandom culture more widely, but also for Doctor Who. The video I've picked here I found really persuasive, and made me more confident in how I saw Twelve.

She also does a series of Take Two Doctor Who Reviews, which are great to see how her views on episodes have changed over time. She'll occasionally have a rant about various topics which are pretty cathartic from my perspecive even if I don't entirely agree with some of them. Her takes from a genderfluid perspective help me see things from a different angle.

Also, her video on how to get into Big Finish was very helpful.

Well, don't need to balance Chibnall scales!

I'm biased against Jay Exci, we've blocked each other online and all that. I haven't seen their lengthy piece because... I have things I'd prefer to do with my time and I've seen enough of the criticism in a more concise fashion.

I don't watch a lot of video essays, I just don't have the time. I've never seen Pillar of Garbage.

But I know that a fair few people have voiced concerns over their associations with very dodgy people such as this MauLeR, including really transphobic types, and their refusal to disavow them.

There's probably still good Whotubers around who aren't friends with fascists or friends with the friends of fascists, but it's so hard to find them that I prefer using Youtube for music or read stuff on Tumblr.

I know that if you even try to bring up Jay Exci's association with MauLeR you'll get hit with the "That's guilt by association!" card but it is very funny to me that we're now beginning to discern just how tightly associated the whole MauLeR/Critical Drinker/Nerdrotic side of the YouTube ecosystem is with alleged Russian stooges like Lauren Chen, Tim Pool, Benny Johnson and Dave Rubin.

Am I saying that I think Exci was paid off by the Kremlin or something like that? Nah not really. Hell I'm not even saying with any certainty that people like MauLeR were. But while guilt by association can perhaps be carried a bit far, I don't think it's exactly some unimaginable stretch to be a tad suspicious of people who hang around in social circles that are facing these kinds of allegations.

Like yeah if I'm close friends with a full-blown Nazi and appear on his podcast all the time, even if I don't agree with their views and might even push back on them on said podcast... I mean, I think people would be within their rights to say "Yo what's the deal with you and that Nazi fella?" And it would be a bit silly of me to go "Gosh you can't be friends with anyone these days, this is classic guilt by association!"

When people say that Jay Exci is a reasonable and fair critic... remember she was accusing people who disagreed with her of doing the equivalent of eating shit.

Jay Exci is basically the definition of a gatekeeper. It's not over whether you enjoy the era or not, it's over this sneering only I can be right, my standards are objective fact, you can't enjoy media differently to me. This is the sort of snobbish toxic fandom which is dragging DW and other shows down.

If humans know cats r intelligent, possibly sapient, and have entire factions and laws n shit, do they still tear down the forest? Would there be protesters for that sort of thing?

Unfortunately the intelligence of cats doesn't stop anything. There may be protestors, especially since the Forest was a popular hiking trail, but overall cats in the Clan Culture expansion are just treated like particularly intelligent ravens or monkeys.

For the most part, they're left alone. When a group becomes problematic, like if they raid farms or start threatening people, they're subjected to culls and population control methods. Like baboons. This doesn't happen very often though-- the Clan cats are notably above average in boldness and intelligence, compared to other cats.

I like to imagine all Tribe-descended cats are that level of above-average. Sisters, Guardians, Tribe cats, Clan cats, and Park cats. Park cats being a convergent (evolved independently; no influence from Tribe cats) group that was subjected to a cull, ergo is quite rare and their culture is found reflected in the influence it left on the Clans.

I do think this is slowly changing for the Clans once they go to the lake, though, since they are an interesting anomaly.

I like to imagine that hikers are actually becoming VERY interested in the bizarre antics of the Clans, though they have no idea yet that there are factions. By the time of AVoS there's like, several videos on WhoTube and they made the local news once.

Clan cats just know that a twoleg with a glowstone is a safe twoleg.

Confused Adipose is a Doctor Who jack of all trades!

While I can't list everything, Joe has done many things for the fandom. Echo's End is probably one of his biggest projects. It's a fan film that's a real love letter to the show and the fans.

More recently he's focused on news, reviews and reactions. In the past, he's also done video essays!

I'm sorry to say that while I broadly speaking agree with the points articulated here I disagree with your claim about Harbo Wholmes. If you look at the Chibnall titles of their videos they are very pandering to the hatedom, sneering how 42 warned us how terrible he was, screaming at him, just being nasty. Not unlike Jay Exci, who people say is some great critic but is quite clearly playing up to the haters like the people who write headlines for tabloids. You can tell a lot about these critics by the titles they put on their videos and the fact that a lot of them are playing up to the nastier side of the fandom to get views. Even if the content isn't what they put as the title they are still pandering up a bit... at least, that's how I perceive it. Rich Hutson and Flower Productions are also guilty of this.

And then there's why they put up mocking videos, sneering at people for liking it. Or when Jay Exci basically told people who liked the last era that they had to admit it was bad and compared them to those eating shit.

At least Council of Geeks or Trilbee or people like that go for more moderate titles rather then playing up to the haters.

I suppose it's something that the Youtube algorithim encourages, going for these OTT titles but that doesn't make it ok.

Much as I found that Sherlock Holmes video from Hbomberguy informative I can't help thinking that it was a harbinger for this sort of overly long unpleasantly-titled style of reviewing that has infected Youtube.

Every showrunner has “killed” Doctor Who.

Russel T. Davies killed Doctor Who.

Steven Moffat killed Doctor Who.

Chris Chibnall killed Doctor Who.

Hence why it’s still here and shows no real sign of slowing down, right?

Mark my words: come Series 14, YouTube essays galore will turn on Russel T. Davies. The algorithm must be appeased after all. No time for self-respect when it’s clickbait.

When I complain about pandering and tabloidy behaviour from Whotubers this stuff from Harbo Wholmes is basically what I mean. There's such a nasty tone to it, a sort of foul glee, which is clearly trying to stir up the haters.

It really does pain me to see YouTubers that I used to watch and enjoy when I was a kid turn out to be Vile MONSTERS! Hope this fuck never sees the outside again!

I wonder what it says now if I think that Hbomberguy might have been too harsh... or me wondering if Hbomberguy's video, while comprehensive, might have shown a downturn in the way that Youtube videos moved to reactionary CAPITALS.

Not that he was as bad as a lot of them, but you look at Whotube and the titles of videos looking increasingly like tabloid headlines.
