Now that I’ve escaped the labyrinth of coursework and essays (for now) maybe I’ll finally have the time to write a bit about the (mis)use of feminist rhetoric in the ACOTAR series. It’s something that’s been on my mind for a while and I’ve always been bothered by how the series goes out of its way to apply a shallow understanding of feminist concepts to justify the existence of its dark romance scenes.

#this is not a dig at dark romance #my main issue is that the story can’t ADMIT to the fact that it uses elements of dark romance to increase its appeal #simultaneously though it dials back the darker elements whenever Maas wants her story to be super pure #wholesome and emblematic of a healthy relationship #I would honestly respect the series more if it owned up to that fact and leaned in as opposed to just obfuscating it #sjm critical #acotar meta #feyre archeron #nesta archeron #rhysand critical #sarah j maas
