Gligglae!!

I would like to preface this by saying I've never been more certain of the true creature in a Bestiaryposting entry than I have been this week, and I'll be genuinely shocked if I'm wrong. That said, here's something mostly completely different!

I had to rush the coloring on these since I don't know how much more time I'll have to use my laptop between now and when the week closes out. I think I still did a pretty good job on these guys (especially the Midwestern White Gligglae, who have done no wrong in their perfect existence).

The Gligglae

Gligglae (genus Gligglae) are a group of small crepuscular mammals capable of short-distance flight, found primarily in the Northern Hemisphere and Africa. They range in size from the Lesser Swedish Gligglae (four inches in length, found in Sweden and Norway) to the Blue King Gligglae (found in central Africa, with the largest specimen recorded being twenty inches in length). All Gligglae have short legs, long bodies, and spines on either side of their heads. These spines connect to membranes that run all the way down the Gligglae's body and can be held rigid to enable flight.

Whether the Gligglae's flight is true flight is still debated, though many consider it to be a controlled glide rather than flight. Gligglae are capable of producing thrust through a rippling motion in their bodies, but cannot sustain flight for long distances.

Most Gligglae are omnivorous scavengers. They glide from tree to tree searching for fresh corpses on the forest floor and grazing on leaves, buds, and seeds as they do so. A few species, such as the Bark-Eating Gligglae, are herbivores; none are exclusively carnivorous.

Gligglae are highly social animals, living in groups of up to thirty individuals. These groups are referred to as cuddles. It was once thought that Gligglae cuddles were large family groups containing several generations, but more recent research has revealed that not only are Gligglae rarely related to the other members of their cuddle, but they show only minimal preference for same-species cuddles. Gligglae within a cuddle will often pile onto one another to form a mass within the branches of a tree as they sleep. Gligglae are highly loyal to their cuddle—if they find a mate within the group, they will be mated for life, but all partners outside the cuddle are only temporary, and end as soon as pups are born.

Several species of Gligglae, including the Tricolor Gligglae and Midwestern White Gligglae, have been domesticated as pets. Domesticated Gligglae do best when given freedom to glide and at least two other Gligglae to form a cuddle with. Depending on the species, Gligglae can live for up to seven years in captivity. Some domesticated Gligglae species have been bred for attractive coats, in particular the Eastern Longhair Gligglae, which has several varieties with a wide range of colorations.
