The Miami Poltergeist - 1966/67

First poltergeist case in which scientifically controlled experiments were conducted to determine the nature of the activity. A human focal point was identified.

The Miami Poltergeist case began in late 1966 or early 1967, when an unusual number of objects in the warehouse of Tropican Arts, a wholesaler of novelty items, spilled and broke under mysterious circumstances. At first, carelessness on the part of shipping clerks was blamed. On January 14, 1967, the Miami police were called by the warehouse manager, Alvin Laubheim, who complained that a ghost was in his warehouse breaking things. The investigating oficer arrived and witnessed objects falling off shelves of their own accord.

After the case came to public awareness, parapsychologists, including Roll and J. Pratt, investigated. Almost immediately Roll suspected that a human focal point was responsible, and that the person was a 19-year-old shipping clerk named Julio (pictured above). The breakages and movements of objects always took place when Julio was in the vicinity, and the activity was most intense when Julio seemed to be irritated or upset. Julio’s proximity to the activity had led coworkers to accuse him of being the culprit, which he vehemently denied. He did confess, however, that the breakages made him happy. The researchers found no evidence that he was responsible for the incidents, or that any trickery was used to stage effects.

No objects moved when attempts were made to film activity. Also, activity in general decreased whenever Roll was on the scene, although he did manage to witness 13 of the 224 incidents that were documented.

Julio's father-in-law to be, Jose Diaz, a medium, was brought to the warehouse by management, and he claimed to see an alligator spirit that allegedly was responsible for the mischief. Diaz placed items about the warehouse to serve as diversionary "playthings" for the spirit, but the breakages continued.

Roll and Pratt examined all shelves to make sure that boxes and items were pushed as far back as possible to eliminate the possibility of vibrations or jarring causing them to fall naturally. To see if objects rose up in the air before falling, Roll placed notebooks as a barrier in front of rows of glasses on shelves. When broken glass was discovered and the notebooks stood undisturbed, it indicated that the glasses had risen up into the air before falling to the ground.

The case also enabled Roll to test his psi field theory, which holds that phenomena reduce with distance from the agent due to a weakening psi field, comparable to a magnetic field. Activity was reduced with distance from Julio; however, objects farthest away from him traveled the longest distances, while objects nearest him traveled the shortest distance. To explain this, Roll proposed that the psi field rotates in a circular motion around an agent similar to a vortex. This explanation has been widely contested by other parapsychologists.

Julio agreed to take a battery of personality and psychological tests. Results that might indicate unconscious psychokinesis at work included anger, rebellion, a sense of unworthiness, guilt, rejection, detachment, passivity and inaction, a feeling of being apart from the social expressing aggression. Julio acknowledged disliking his boss. It also was discovered that 10 days prior to the start of the phenomena at the warehouse, Julio had had some upsetting experiences at home, with his stepmother trying to get him to move out of the house. He suffered nightmares and had suicidal feelings.

On January 30, a break-in occurred at the warehouse and some items and petty cash were taken. Julio was suspected, and he later confessed. The owner and manager did not press charges. The police sergeant also said that Julio claimed he had caused the poltergeist activity with trickery using threads; the sergeant, however, never examined the warehouse, and Roll and Pratt doubted the claim. Several days later, Julio stole a ring from a jeweler for his fiancee.

He was convicted and sent to jail for six months. After his departure from the warehouse, phenomena ceased.

Upon Julio's release, Roll and others attempted to arrange financial support for him so that he could undergo laboratory research for extrasensory perrception (ESP) and PK. Julio declined, and pursued marriage and a tumultuous job history. He eventually underwent tests, and showed significant results for PK but not for ESP. He indicated an ability to control his PK. Later, his father-in-law attempted to help him improve his control of PK in mediumistic sittings.

The Miami case is evidence in support of the theory that at least some cases of poltergeist outbreaks are caused unwittingly by human agents, perhaps due to repressed emotions and hostilities.

Everything ends. Even summer. Especially summer.

Everything always ends and Marjorie Andrews knows this intimately. It’s why she can’t be excited about moving into the lakehouse the way everyone else is. It’s been in the family for years, used only for reunions and now she’s moving in permanently, and she loves it, but she knows it’s not really permanent. Nothing ever is.

She’s kicking her feet over the edge of the lake, toes dragging through the water as she sits in jeans and t-shirt on the floating dock, when she hears the gravel crunch as functional as a doorbell. A half empty glass of iced tea is abandoned on the dock and possibly dumped wholesale into the lake when she stands and runs, with the careful balance and blind direction of someone who’s crossed this path a hundred times before, to the driveway. If anything is home, this is.

Her mom is shouting from inside, but Marjorie only cares about the car now parked in front of the garage and the people coming out of it. Her aunt and uncle smile warmly but her cousin, blonde curls falling around her shoulders, is all Marjorie can see.

“Marjorie!” They both cry at the same time, falling into the type of hug that can only be had between girls who don’t see each other often enough.

There are two too many duplicate names in their family. The two Marjories, auburn Andrews and blonde Taylor, as well as the first Marjorie’s father and brother’s shared name of Zachary.

Marjorie Taylor is from the city and has lived there her entire life, in the same apartment since she was born. Marjorie Andrews isn’t jealous of this, just puzzled by it; she’s never known anything but moving every few years, military deployments and weeks of missing her dad and wondering where they would land next. Permanence may as well be a foreign word to her, which means that she and her favorite cousin have a language barrier. Their Rosetta stone is this house, where they’ve seen each other every summer since they were babies. If there’s anywhere they’ve grown up, it’s here.

“I can’t believe you live here now,” Marjorie Taylor says, arm in arm with her namesake as they walk into the house ahead of her parents. “The lakehouse has become a lake home!”

Marjorie Andrews laughs. It’s always like this. Even if they haven’t talked in months, the moment they meet again it’s as if they’re picking up a conversation that never really stopped. “Something like that,” she agrees with a pointed look at the boxes still stacked in the front hall, things that haven’t been put away yet. “Mama, they’re here!” She shouts into the kitchen.

Emilia Andrews leans out into the entryway with her dark brown hair in a frazzled ponytail and a patchwork apron over her clothes. “Good thing, dinner will be ready in about half an hour,” she says. “How was the drive?”

Aunt Maud shrugs. “Nothing to write home about.” She follows Emilia back into the kitchen, leaving her husband to shoot the girls a quizzical raised eyebrow.

Auburn Marjorie nods into the family room, down the hall and to the right of the kitchen. “Grandma and Papa are in there, last I know,” she says, and Uncle Anthony takes off to greet his in-laws. This leaves the Marjories to their own devices in the front hall, still arm in arm.

“I need to see you room,” says Marjorie Taylor, and without hesitation or another word Andrews turns and pulls her up the stairs. They go as fast as they can as an unofficial three-legged race without tripping. “Which one is yours?”

The first Marjorie grins. “The lavender room,” she says, “The one you and I always share!” She makes it to the landing and turns down the hall, past what they call the peach room, where Zach is laying in his bed with headphones on and a notebook in hand, and throws open the next door.

Her room is so named for its pale purple walls, now turned golden by the afternoon sunlight coming in through the open window on the far wall. Where there used to be matching twin beds taking up most of the floor space, there’s now a wooden loft bed with space to set a mattress up beneath it and beside the desk tucked away in the corner. In the opposite corner is a soft disc chair, orange and fuzzy, beside a bookshelf stacked on top of a dresser. There are still boxes in the free spaces, but the room is more lived in than it’s been in a long while.

“You made it so cute!” Marjorie says, bouncing up and down on her toes. “I love it!”

Marjorie, who lives in this room for now, points with her foot at the dresser. “There’s space in the dresser for you if you want, and we can set up your bed after dinner.”

“Cool,” Marjorie Taylor says. “Is it weird changing everything around here?” She asks while reaching up to pull her hair into a ponytail.

“A little,” Marjorie says. “Everything changes, I guess.” She pretends like she doesn’t hate that. This is her last summer before she has to choose if she’s going to college or where. Blonde Marjorie is already enrolled for this year’s fall semester and they haven’t really talked about it, she just heard it from her mom. It’s probably their last summer together, and they need to hold onto that even if so much is changing, even the layout and life of the lavender room. Everything changes. Everything ends. Sometime, they should have known, this will too.

The 'give me a blank notebook and I tell you about a fic I'm not writing' meme which is blatant bait but ok here goes. Call of Duty fandom, feat. the Ghost comics as a baseline. '22 timeline. The basic premise is 'Single Dad Simon Riley', because I want that man to have a kid damnit he's got All the Trauma he deserves one universe where he gets to mitigate some of that trauma. The setup is: Ghost is a mercenary who works with a select group of people, because he's *out* he's not in the Service anymore he's a goddamn single dad. He's going to leave his kid with a babysitter he trusts and he's going to go out and do the murders that the government will pay him to do. Joseph is his entire world and most of his personality at this point. He does not live on base, but near it. Cue him running occasional missions with the 141 and Soap *paying attention* to him, because he's down bad for the big man with the gentle voice and utter unhinged battlefield methodology. Gaz gives him endless shit for it. They go on a mission, it's *bad*. The kind of people they go after are monsters, after all. There's a kid, and Ghost *instantly* goes into Dad mode. He's down on her level, talkin' to her soft and gentle, and he extracts her himself because she's terrified but also he's going to be making sure she ends up with medics and then a good care home. Soap is down incredibly bad, he is so fuckin' thirsty, that man is hot as fuck and Soap desperately wants him to make any sort of indication that his flirting is accepted. Simon flat out tells him that he doesn't have room for more than one man in his life and cue Soap dying a little inside thinking that Ghost has a husband already shit he's a lucky man. It's comms banter and Soap responds with 'ah, shame. Must be the luckiest man, to have bagged you.' and all like gracefully bowing out, and Simon snorts. "He's *nine* and he's starting his new school on Monday, so if we're not out of this shithole by Saturday night, I'm gonna be a right bitch about it." He says, conversationally, and Soap perks right back up, ears standing straight up type puppy-happy attention because Soap *loves* kids. Cue Soap learning about Ghosts nephew, the kid he's raising all on his own (score!) and yeah. Yeah that's a whole thing and they get back to base and Soap catches Ghost at the gate with a hastily wrapped box of drawing pencils, because Ghosts nephew likes to draw too and Soap had these ones because he got them on a 2-for-1 sale at the art store and they're not opened. Cue an 'I'll show you my etchings' joke somewhere in there, and Ghost thaws. Just a bit. A tiny bit. He softens just a bit to say "Thank you, Johnny. I'm sure he'll love them." and then he's gone into the gloomy pre-dawn light. Soap *swoons*. Gaz, as the best friend he is, gives him a wholesale discount on the endless shit he gives him for being down so bad for an Operator that they've never actually seen officially or without his mask. Soap does in fact tape up the little thank you card Joseph drew him, that Ghost dutifully delivered to him. It has a little bar of soap on the front and the letters were made with little stamps and it's so fucking cute he cries about it.

The whole thing wraps up with a firefight in a jungle somewhere, Ghost confessing that he likes Soap a bit, a touch, just the tiniest amount really, and maybe Soap can be allowed to keep his hands, if he touches him. Soap shoots, he scores. The outro is a year or so later, with Soap showing up to the park for a youth football game, because Joseph plays and he wants to show Soap how good he is at Goalie. He's very good and Soap cheers embarrassingly loudly and Simon doesn't murder him even a little bit. I don't have the energy to write this entirely, the whole thing is goopy feelings softness, interspersed with intense violence, but it'd be fun to read if someone else wants to take this outline and run far, run fast, run screaming with it!

i'll probably forget it come next week again but until then here's a sushi roller i bought at a garage sale there one of the notebooks i made when i was up in the mountains with that mad-genius inventor here a collection of ties from when i wanted to be taken serious serious there a dusty old duvet that's going to the collection yards here the rest of the blue bedsheet pack that used to have bedbugs when i was living in the halfway house, but it's been five years minimum sitting in that trash bag next to the flea traps i bought and never used two years ago there the rest of the gray - the woven-knit teddy bear you gave me -

maybe i should put my memories of you in a box, somehow instead of leaving it out like the angel doll you sent me on my dresser the one "useless" gift, in the sense that i don't generally use anything that's purely decorative. it becomes decorative if i haven't looked at it for long enough, but you said to me this one is just to look at. i guess now it also reminds me of you, so it's not entirely decorative.

like my room gathers dust when it's all been left in place i am accidentally hoarding memories of you to myself i should clean it out and donate it to an op-shop, just i don't know when and may forget.
