y'know, the different factions of spn fandom on tumblr do fundamentally and vehemently disagree with each other about a lot of things, and many of the factions actively hate one another, but i just want to say for the record that i appreciate the fact that this site is not overrun with painfully hetero facebook fans. i just saw someone over there saying with their whole chest that they fully expected the finale to have dean meeting jo harvelle in heaven and them getting afterlife married, and someone else angrily responded that this was obviously never going to happen because clearly dean was still in love with lisa braeden who would therefore be his finale bride (i guess this person expected her to die in the finale somehow?), and then someone ELSE responded that they wouldn't want to see either of those things happen because they like to pretend dean is their boyfriend and it would feel like cheating(!!!!) if he ended up with one of them and they'd never be able to fantasize about him anymore. and all of these comments had over a dozen people agreeing with them.

here we are again, my old friend. Time for a re-read. In case you were curious, this is The Mysteries of Udolpho, by Ann Radcliffe. The heroine, Emily St. Aubert (the name! the naaaame!) is the most incredible Mary Sue to ever Mary Sue and I love her for it. She is beautiful, gentle, good at everything, but most importantly the most Pure and Good Girl Ever. Descriptions go on and on for pages. In fact, everything is described to DEATH in lush and exhausting detail. But! You get to read things like this-

"The deepest shade of twilight did not send him from his favourite plane-tree. He loved the soothing hour, when the last tints of light die away; when the stars, one by one, tremble through æther, and are reflected on the dark mirror of the waters; that hour, which, of all others, inspires the mind with pensive tenderness, and often elevates it to sublime contemplation. When the moon shed her soft rays among the foliage, he still lingered, and his pastoral supper of cream and fruits was often spread beneath it. Then, on the stillness of night, came the song of the nightingale, breathing sweetness, and awakening melancholy."

purple prose and mary sues are an important part of the literary ecosystem and should be treasured.

I translated and typeset the first of damurushi’s hitokazu doujins, Song of the Burning Bird - Side White (Hinotori no Uta - Shiro / ひのとりのうた・白 ) into English! Similar to my In the Honey Milk translation, the translation was mostly using machine translation, but I've asked jp speakers to help with unclear lines.

Y'all are TRULY sleeping on Hyacinth by S.M. LaViolette. Like, I really enjoyed Phoebe (first book in the series), but Hyacinth is on another level. It features:

--a scarred libertine duke

--a neurodivergent heroine (23 to his 36) who happens to be KILLER at playing cards (in part because she's counting them) and sneaks out at night to play them while dressed as a very awkward young man

--a very casual interest in kink from her that makes him (a kinky man) go "O_O"

--a shockingly fabulous scene in which he tries to get her to admit she's a girl by taking her to a brothel, making her watch two people fuck while sitting beside him, and rattling off like 75 slang phrases for "jerking it" before being like "there's nothing WRONG with it bOY MEN MASTURBATE IN FRONT OF EACH OTHER ALLLL THE TIME" and starting to pull his dick out

--her: "AHHHH NO--YES? NO!"

--RIDING CROPS!

Libertus is /absolutely/ prepared to pull a (strictly platonic) Tam Lin if the situation calls for it. And he most certainly is not above pulling Crowe in if needed.

You know, at first I was like Tam Lin, Tam Lin. That sounds familiar. Where have I heard it before? Not even a day later I got this in my YouTube recommendations and had an Eureka! moment:

Soooooo, yes. Libertus would absolutely do that. He would make his own chalk with Crowe's help and then march into The Mürn's court. He'd look directly into Nyx's eyes where he stands next to The Mürn and ask "Do I need to rescue you?" while throwing Nyx a bauble as payment for the question.

(Said bauble is pretty, sparkles and is absolutely useless. But Selena liked to collect them. Nyx rumbles a pleased purr. His storm-brother knows him so well.)
