9) What fic meant the most to you to write?

I think out of everything I wrote this year, it would have to be Back By Midnight. I've been writing about Matthew for about 3 years now, and so for him and his friends to finally have an original storyline is truly something that means a lot for me. It's also allowed me to experiment with writing, allowing me to try my hand at writing action sequences in a way that fits the spy genre.

16) What were your go-to writing songs?

While it's difficult to whittle it down to just a few songs, I can thank my friends who both made and suggested to me various spy-themed playlists that greatly helped me when it came to writing BBM, as well as a whole host of other music for my other projects throughout the year. But if I had to pick one, I'd choose this song from a 60's spy playlist that I was recommended that would absolutely be playing in the background of Operation: BULLSEYE.

Secrets and Stilettos

Rowena Saloojee aka Secretsandstilettos is a style and beauty blogger based in Johannesburg, South Africa, she’s also a LISOF alumni. I’ve been following her for about 3 years now and love her work, I met Rowena personally over a year ago and she’s just as beautiful on the inside as she is on the outside, sharing her styled lookbooks, latest trends and beauty must haves.

 Rowena shares with her followers her weekly outfits.monthly beauty products, and beauty tutorials (which I love) she also loves to share tips and tricks on her Instagram stories which If  I were you I would watch because I definitely have learnt a few tricks. She recently launched a swimwear line with her friend/partner Rohab called ‘Laro Swimwear’ showing us that we can still dress modestly whilst taking a dip in the pool.

 In order for us to get to know her a little bit better, I asked her a few questions and this is what she responded with:

1.    Introduce yourself to Us

A.   I’m Rowena Saloojee, fashion and beauty blogger behind Secrets and Stilettos. 

2.    What does fashion mean to you?

A.   Fashion has always been a part of my life. I was lucky to have a very stylish, fashion conscious mom who always let me express my creativity without question. I used to “make” my own clothing when I was younger, if I saw something in an international magazine and it wasn’t yet available in stores, I would buy something similar and alter it to how I like. Before skinny jeans were in fashion, I made my own! 

3.    How would you describe your blogging style?

A.   I love dressing in easily accessible, classic style clothing that anyone can wear. I embrace trends and try show ways to make it your own. 

4.    What, according to you, is your favourite part of being a fashion blogger?

A.   Surprisingly, I love the writing element of blogging. I love being able to have my own platform where I can say what I feel. I hate seeing “famous” blogs with beautiful imagery but have poor grammar or are littered with swear words. 

5.    Describe how did you first get into blogging?

A.   I actually started off with a Facebook page and a BBM group. I would research what celebrities are wearing and find where you can get it locally and do a post on my Facebook page and groups. I had a tripod and a camera and would take outfit pictures on my parents’ open roof. Gossip Girl was also really big that time, so a lot of my outfits were inspired by Serena and Blair. When I attended LISOF, it was required to start a Wordpress blog as part of a Media assignment. It was one of the first time’s ever I got 100% in an assignment. That motivated me to stick with my blog. 

6.    How do you manage time to run your blog efficiently?

A.   I’m the co-owner of a swimwear line, LARO Swimwear, so that takes up most of my time as it’s my full time job. Blogposts are usually written at night and photos are taken over the weekend, or if I’m out with friends I ask them to take pictures. It helps to know your angles and be able to judge a good background (it comes with time and experience) so it doesn’t take more than a few minutes. It can be tiring but is truly a labour of love! 

7.    Who has impacted you most in blogging and how?

A.   Locally, I’m very inspired by Aisha Baker of Baked the Blog. I love her work ethic and how open and honest she is. 

Internationally, I love Lydia Elise Millen. She’s poised, classy, and her style is very similar to me. She’s one of the only bloggers that I actually trust and will buy what she recommends. 

8.    Where would you like to be in blogging five years from now?

A.   Hopefully grown to my maximum potential, and hopefully be able to add “travel blogger” to my bio! I hope that I’ll one day be an ambassador for a big beauty brand, and attend international fashion weeks because people respect my opinion. I want to grow organically, and never use a “quick fix” like buying followers on Integra for recognition. 

9.    Can you name some of your favourite bloggers and explain why they are your favourites?

A.   1. Brett Robson. She’s always at the forefront of fashion locally. 

2. Song of Style, I love how she dresses and her goofy personality! 

3. Caroline Daur, because she is insanely beautiful and her Integra is #travelgoals 

10. What are a few fun facts about you?

A.   • I’m actually an extreme introvert, which is very unusual for a fashion blogger! Blogger events give me anxiety, and if I could skip them altogether, I would. 

• I wanted to be an Occupational Therapist, got accepted, and decided to go to LISOF instead. I don’t regret it!

A Short Story // Gallery Girl

“I’m leaving, aren’t you coming with me?” Gerald turned his head but his soul is certainly ready for jet plane.

It is certainly a too long day for both of them, conversation has done but answer is floating. The two are leaving for different direction in a different time, definitely not for good but for a pretty long time. 

Consideration to stay is still in mind to wait for the other-half. “But how about my future, I have my bright future too”, asked Karen in her heart.

Gerald and Karen has been good friend for years, good friend stage leveled up into some romantic friends. Being ambitious towards future, imagining themselves as a professional, working with each other, that is all what they have dreamed of. But everything turned upside down after college. Gerald decided to take his step to City of Manchester then Karen has decided to pursue her dream to Washington as a gallery girl.

(Flashback)

“Karen?” asked Gerald in their bbm voice chat.

It’s been a week since their last meeting. Blackberry is the only way to get each other. Both are busy but they try at least to send hello every day.

“Yes, Gerald, we should meet up, there are some things I need to ask” tell Karen to Gerald. “Then see you in Café around 1pm” replied Gerald.

Gerald have arrived minutes before 1 in the afternoon, He has ordered what they always order.

“Hi G! What’s up? Have u waited for long time?” said Karen while pulling her chair.

“I’ve been good as always, been busy with some papers….How’s your preparation? Ready for Washington?” response Gerald.

All conversation seemed like they are backing for each other but on other side both are asking what exactly are they doing.

“All are good, just there are some papers I have to do in embassy” said Karen.

“When are you leaving me anyway?” Joke Karen right before Gerald’s words.

“Hahaha, what are you talking about? I’m leaving next Saturday” answered Gerald, “We should have a date, right? SeaWorld would be great” He asked her out.

“Friday will do, right? I have things to do until Thursday, and I might be home late” told Karen to Gerald.

“Sure, I can pick up if you want, like my last ride for you” silly joke threw to Karen by Gerald.

And suddenly the café play their favorite song Sara Bareilles’ Love song. Karen smiled and Gerald tried to hold his laughs. As a fan-girl Karen knew the story behind the song, not a love song but a rebel song.

“U know that I’m not going to write love letter for you, right?” Joke Karen.

“You silly, let’s go now, I have somewhere to go” asked Gerald. They parted in parking car, “See you Friday” told each other.

Friday, is now the day. He’s leaving tomorrow but we have one day left.

“Pretty Morning to you, Ren!” said Gerald, “Who’s prettier? Me or the Morning?” asked Karen with her silly question”.

SeaWorld is one of their favorite place, the two loves Photography and seafood. Back then Gerald was almost a professional diver.

They have arrived in the main aquarium, not their favorite place but cool enough to see some divers’ giving food for the fishes and to take pictures.

They walked around seeing fishes, enjoying under water scenery.

Antasena Hall is their favorite spot in SeaWorld, an underwater hall with travelator and see-through glass along the hall.

“So, are we good?” asked Gerald.

“Yes, are we sick?” joked back Karen.

“Karen, do you know that there are so many galleries in London even in Manchester” Gerald tried to convince her again.

They both applied for UK and USA visa together, both received the two visas but they got different job offers.

Karen just smiled without saying a word.

Awkwardness bombed the situation, no words to say, things have been discussed but no one satisfied with the result.  

They smiled at the fishes, No…they laughed off the dreams.

“We still can meet, I’m sure for that, I can visit you and you can visit me, right? We’re still...we” the last words were the unsure things Karen have said.

Time clocked to 4 in the afternoon, time flied with unsure things.

They are about to leave Antasena Hall.

For the last time Gerald asked “I’m really leaving tomorrow, aren’t you coming with me?”

Karen answered him, “I’m leaving too but I’ll come over your place”

I wrote this short a few years back in college. I just let a friend read this. I have the urge of moving this piece from blogspot to tumblr. Hope you like it, as much as I feel ache reading this.
