Got a favor to ask. Does anyone know where I can find a physical copy of the 2023 production of "Who Will Comfort Toffle?"? (Am aware you can purchase the 1980 production as DVDs from Japan.)
The very first Christmas gift I received from a good friend was the English translation of the hardcover book "Who Will Comfort Toffle?". The book means the world to me.
I gave that same copy to my best friend in 2021 because I would move the mountains for her. Would like to be able to find multimedia versions of that book as a continuation of an important Christmas event.
If I am unable to find a hard copy of the 2023 "Who Will Comfort Toffle" film, then I will just send a lastulintu (fan-bird) handcrafted by a friend's grandfather many decades ago for Christmas.
Thank you!

(Solar elaborated in DMs that it meant Toffle, so) Here you go! (+ I added a few extras)
Shout-out to Toffle who was originally conceived as female but then changed to male and then got fused with Toft to become the token they/them, the trans women enjoyer of all time.

One of my favourite illustrations, from the book 'Who Will Comfort Toffle?' (1960) by Tove Jansson.
As a child, I dreamed of living in one of these little houses and look out the window at my extra large neighbours walking by. That in the mornings, when I needed to leave, one of them would graciously lend me a finger to stand on as they lowered me to the forest floor. Upon my evening return I wouldn't bother them, there was a pulley system to get myself back up.
This imaginary world felt so vivid as a child, I could envision everything. Whenever I miss it, I just reopen this book and let myself be immersed in this world again. There's no age limit for imagination.

But here is something I WOULD really like and don't suppose I'll ever get:
A beautifully animated version of Moominvalley in November that tells the full story as is, without worrying about whether kids will understand it. Whether adults will understand it. Something highly atmospheric, autumnal, melancholy. No narration. Only the sparse dialogue with lots of silent stretches where the characters stare with the almost off-putting huge black eyes they have in the novel illustrations and the 90s cartoon.
For me that book is just the soul of autumn. I'd love it even more if there were also a Moominpappa at Sea made similarly. While I'm dreaming I might as well ask for that as well haha.
I really did enjoy the MV19 take on both these stories. It was nice to see them done to any extent - but of course there was a limit to what they could do and they didn't want to make any little ones cry. I enjoy the 90s series version of the lighthouse too, but obviously it's for little kids and doesn't have any depth. I like it, but the sea needs depth.
When I saw the Who Will Comfort Toffle? play at Moominvalley Park, even though that was with kids in mind, it very much had that sort of atmosphere I'm thinking of. It was quiet and atmospheric and gave the world a certain tangible bigness. It was lovely. I'd just adore something like that for my two favorite Moomin stories.

I am currently reading moominpappa at sea for the first time and i love it so much! moomins just have something so soft in their writing. I can also recommend the comics if youre interested (i used to read them back when i was working as a librarian and had them constantly at hand). they are really amusing and a lot of them are about someone falling for some temptation of modern life (money, success and such), fumbling with it for a bit and then abandon it for the good old peaceful moomin life and its such a fun comfort. who will comfort toffle is a gem that could make me cry anytime i love it so much.
aw :'- ) hope you enjoy it all ! ill check out the comics if i can find them , my college might have them in the library or ill look for them second-hand. im not the hugest fan of moomins interacting with modern things like in the moomins on the riviera movie, it feels out of character from the books to me,
also yes , something so potent about the loneliness toffle is in and him getting out of it is T_ T. .... its a lovely book. the drawings of miffle and toffle together reminds me of ava and una

Only press the option if you've read ALL of the books/main comics. I just don't have enough options to include those who have only read portions of the series. This season adapted many stories across multiple books and comics. So even if you've read Comet in Moominland but not Moominland Midwinter, say that you haven't read the books for this poll.
This does not include the picture books, btw. As awesome as a Who Will Comfort Toffle? adaptation would have been, it never came to be. ✊😔
Also if you're someone that's read all of the main comics but not the books, please make yourself known! I've only ever heard of people reading the books then the comics.

Now. The books. Uhm. There's a lot. I'll make this quick.
Tumblr media
From left to right, top bottom top.
Comet in Moominland -- 1946 -- included the first appearances of many characters including Snufkin and Snorkmaiden.
Finn Family Moomintroll -- 1948 -- a small collection of various stories, including small blurbs for each character.
The Exploits of Moominpappa -- 1950 (revised later in 1968 and renamed "Moominpappa's Memoirs") -- tales of Moominpappa's youth, when he was still called Moomintroll. Includes new characters such as the Joxter (Snufkin's father) Hodgkin, and the Muddler (Sniff's father)
The Book about Moomin, Mymble and Little My -- 1952 -- Ngl I don't know much about this book other than the fact Mymble and Little My are sisters.
Moominsummer Madness -- 1954 -- infuriatingly close to romance between Snufkin and Moomin during a prison break. Pretty sure Snufkin's iconic line "let's go fill Moominvalley with crime" is in the anime adaptation of this book. Something to do with a failing theatre but it's kind of overshadowed by Snufkin's and Moomin's pining./hj (Please they're so gay it hurts)
Moominland Midwinter -- 1957 -- Moomintroll wakes up from hibernation (yes they hibernate) and is unable to go back to sleep. Too-ticky (white and red striped sweater, if you wanna look 'em up) helps him through it.
Who Will Comfort Toffle? -- 1960 -- Toffle leaves his home to try and find friends (he's a lonely lil' guy. Wet cat vibes.) And ends up rescuing Miffle (another character, doesn't appear much) from The Groke
Tales from Moominvalley -- 1962 -- a collection of short stories
Moominpappa at Sea -- 1965 -- The Moomins basically move away to an island, along with Little My and The Groke. It's. Really sad actually.
Moominvalley in November -- 1970/71 -- last official book, it's basically all the characters trying to find oit what happened to the Moomin family, as they found their home abandoned. Also I keep forgetting to mention Fillyjonk. Everyone say hi to Fillyjonk, the Moomins' neighbor. I probably won't speak of her again. Anyways, the book ends with them not fully finding out what happened.
The Dangerous Journey -- 1977 -- last book written by Tove before her death, it follows a human that accidentally got into Moominvalley. Happy ending, though.
JESUS THAT GOT SAD TOWARDS THE END,, those last three books sound really interesting :DD!! ( i mean, they all do but YKNOW HWGRH )
also, snufkin and moomin are GAY??? HELL YEAH WOOOO!!!! I WAS NOTT EXPECTING THAT!!!!
you know a lot about these this is awesome
also i think you'd be glad to know that ive been getting moomin related things in my recommended
