Cab you elaborate a little on that post about artists of color not having a good understanding of materialism? Like, do you mean that they are unknowingly perpetuating capitalism by being materialistic or something else?????
( This is a genuine question because I misunderstand long posts easily, sorry if it sounds rude ).
when i say 'materialism' i'm referring to dialectical materialism, the marxist theory that political and historical events result from the conflict of social forces - people's access to material needs like shelter, food, healthcare, etc. and their relationship to the means of production. these events can be interpreted as a series of contradictions and their solutions. it is the scientific method for understanding politics/economics and history, and the basis of marxist analysis and of marxism leninism as a framework.
i'm saying that many artists of colour in the west speak a lot about capitalism, imperialism, colonialism, war, etc. from a vaguely 'leftist' but ultimately still liberal perspective, and thus they are not actually challenging anything with their work. they will talk about anything But class, and fall easily for bourgeois politics as long as it's concealed in social justice or "leftist" or antiracist sounding language
and it's because they won't engage directly with marxism leninism, they won't engage with learning materialist analysis, and having this understanding would prevent them from falling for these attempts and allow them to do work that actually has some kind of meaningful impact on these systems they claim to be against. so they are trying to talk and write and make art and organize about capitalism and colonialism without understanding how these things actually function in a literal, material sense...
simply existing as nonwhite people in the west doesn't inherently teach us these things, otherwise all people of colour in the west would be communists. we have to actually do the reading and be open to another framework of understanding the world, to having our worldviews shifted. but i think some people don't want to do that because of their relative class position. it makes them uncomfortable, or they don't want to admit that they benefit from imperialism in some ways. they can't - or won't - decouple an awareness of their class position from morality or their personal feelings.
without a marxist framework for understanding what capitalism is and how it functions, whatever work they claim to be trying to do to challenge capitalism or colonialism or whatever At Best doesn't do anything, and At Worst continues to serve bourgeois interests. the confusion between colonialism and imperialism in particular is easily exploited, so that with the language of anti racism and decolonization people end up agreeing with and promoting US/NATO foreign policy on imperialized nations - these buzzwords can sound pretty good if you don't know better. all this talk about decolonizing our minds and art practices and being anti capitalists but no one can actually explain what capitalism is or how colonialism works or the material role of racism under capitalism, nor do they want to talk about their own relationship to capital, so the talk is just empty lol. all these artists trying to figure out "alternative, embodied ways of thinking and being" and it's all just more liberalism
#sorry i talked a lot more but i tried to cut it up into smaller paragraphs#speaking as an artist of colour in the west!!!! i am routinely disappointed in my peers#the thing is most professional fine artists do a bachelors + a masters degree which requires being able to be unemployed a lot#and the money to go to school for that long OR live in a country with a robust social system that provides subsidized education#when i tell even other artists of colour i dropped out of uni cause i couldnt afford it i am treated differently#the same ppl who talk about capitalism and decolonization lol!!!! no class consciousness

Don't make fun of any accents, ever, for any reason.
The person on the receiving end will most likely fall in at least one of three categories:
Second language
Regional accent
Speech impediment
1. Second language
This person is probably speaking in this language to you because either you don't speak their mother tongue or you speak it worse than they speak the language you are speaking. They are making an effort for you. An accent doesn't make you dumb.
Making fun of someone for attempting to communicate in another language is the height of assholery.
2. Regional accent
Half the time you make fun of regional accents, you make fun of historically disenfranchised accents.
Southern accents? Congrats you're making fun of the way rural, usually poor, people speak. Their speech was highly influenced by black people.
Don't even get me started on making fun of AAE.
Again, an accent doesn't make you any less intelligent.
3. Speech impediment
They know they have a speech impediment. They are probably trying very hard not to sound like that. It is literally not their fault. They have had to deal with people making fun of it their whole life.
A speech impediment doesn't make you less intelligent either.
#submission#manners#good manners#etiquette#politeness#courtesy#nationalism and xenophobia plays a pretty big role in the first one too#In the country I live in a lot of the nationalism and xenophobia specifically centers around language#For foreigners it's a lose / lose situation#If they speak the local language then locals will be rude to them for having an accent#But if they don't use the local language (since most locals born here are actually pretty multi-lingual) they get yelled at#and generally treated like garbage#@ nationalistic people in the country I live in: please choose#Either be patient and kind to people with an accent#or be willing to use English or Spanish or other languages#you can't just yell at foreigners who speak to you at all either with an accent or in a different language#and get mad that they just don't appear here with perfect native speaking abilities

Are you for free school lunch? (Project 2025 wants to get rid of that)
Are you for support for single parents, or low income families? (Things like foodstamps and wic could count here)
Are you for child education? (Project 2025 wants to ban pbs…and they’re already banning books)
Are you for safe spaces for children to exist and play?
Are you for adoption?
Are you for programs that help teens and adults with living situations and rehabilitations?
If you can answer no to any of those, you are not pro-life. You are pro-birth.

But does your man buy an entire hawking establishment just because he saw a painting of a hawking party where one of the women kind of resembled you?
#helen by maria edgeworth#is equal parts slog and wild ride#i can see why this would have been popular in jane austen's time#but it's exactly why it's dated now#all these upper-crust people talking about current literary figures and customs#flinging around french all the time#compare that to austen's middle-class country people#who live in a different culture than us but have a lot of the same normal daily problems#also austen's pacing and dialogue are so much better#the number of times characters stop to expound upon some philosophical point!#just in the course of daily conversation!#this story's fun enough for what it is#(digging the 'love triangle' where one of the guys is just going after the girl because the other guy annoys him)#but while i can see why austen might have enjoyed edgeworth i hope she knows she was the better author

It's so wild to me when people treat the disco elysium world as any other fantasy world, with seemingly no ties to our real world and its geopolitics, when politics is such a big facet of the game? "Which disco elysium nation would you want to live in?!" My brother in Doloris Dei I already live here.
#disco elysium#rambling#this post is NOT about people who enjoy the worldbuilding in elysium#that's awesome and it deserves to get that attention#this is about people who seem to refuse to engage with the political and philosophical nature of the game#to the point that they don't seem to acknowledge the way this art is holding up a mirror and what it's trying to say#also this post is shaking hands with that other post about how people who make Harry and Kim different fantasy races in AUs missed the poin#anyway i live in sur-le-clef/oranjerijk and if that makes me uncomfortable bc of the glimpse we get of it in DE#then i should consider why that is and what role my country plays geopolitically!!#yes this was triggered by another reddit post

What’s your favorite song/moment from Epic: the Musical so far?
Ruthlessness, followed really closely by God Games.
Athena is great in God Games and the banter between the gods is so fun and then the ending hits all the harder cause of that.
But Poseidon's every line in Ruthlessness is just great, dude's words just hit perfectly. The talk of naivete and false righteousness breaks down Odysseus's character and version of mercy so well. Like, what mercy are you preaching to Polyphemus, dear Ody? Didn't you literally just raised a city?
And honestly I just like the angry Poseidon vibes. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
#asks#the reason i'm still rooting for ody is solely cause of his family and athena#and the “greek who reeks of false righteousness” line hits different living in this country so the song gets extra points for that#epic the musical#i'm realizing that ody is my spin-in-the-washing-machine character

Would you mind sharing your views on backpacking? 👀
Take all of this with a grain of salt because I'm mostly just bothered by backpacking content on Instagram.
I think the concept is fine. I'd actually like to do some backpacking some time.
But backpacking content, as well as most overland* content, always has a really weird vibe. It almost feels like cosplaying poverty if you know what I mean??
It's almost always young people from the so called "West" and almost always they're somewhere in South or Southeast Asia. The most popular backpacking destinations I'm seeing at the moment are Bali (exclusively that part of Indonesia for some reason), Thailand, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. The algorithm has recently also started showing me content from Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.
Since flights to these destinations are usually quite expensive, and many of these people stay abroad long enough that they might need a visa and that accommodation and food would also add up, it can be safely assumed these people have a certain amount of financial stability. Some of them are full time influencers too.
And while travelling with a backpack instead of a suitcase makes sense, and while you want to have an "authentic" experience, the vibe on those videos is often sooooo weird.
They're always like "I just spent 45h standing in a cramped bus without AC because it was only $1. I'm sleeping on the floor of this abandoned building that costs me $4 a night. I only carry 2 t-shirts with me, can't find a laundromat and I'm travelling for 3 months. Yesterday I got scammed and got food poisoning."
And I'm like why are you doing this? Is it really more "authentic" just because it's a foreign country? You can find the same uncomfortable situations and people who live like that all the time in your home country, but when you're abroad it's cool and authentic and #humbling #eatpraylove. Meanwhile there's also people in that same country you're backpacking through who, like, have a comparable standard of living you're used to. Your holiday doesn't have to be luxury resorts but it also doesn't have to be absolutely god awful.
And of course there's also the factor of adrenaline and stepping out of your comfort zone but with these videos it seems like they're almost glamorising having an awful time in an "exotic" country because that's what it's supposed to be like? I guess?
Idk I feel like I should get the opinion of someone living in one of those backpacking hotspots to make sure I'm not just getting annoyed at nothing but I think the vibe is off.
*overland content as in "travelling from XY to YZ without flying - Day 420" type videos. They're often interesting and I follow some of those people and I actually have some ideas for cool overland or long distance train trips but some of the accounts also have a weird vibe. Most of the ones I saw were men and they're like hitchhiking through some desert somewhere and I'm like oh this would feel so unsafe to me as someone perceived female. And obviously they also make lots of content where you know they have lots money because they've been travelling for several months but it has that same fake low budget backpacker vibe.
I hope this makes sense. I'm not sure it does.
#Comparable standard of living as in no two places are the same#And climate and the overall economy of the country and so many other factors can make a difference to how people are living#But there are people in Vietnam Thailand etc who are just. You know. Leading a normal life. Who have comfortable flats.#There are also rich people everywhere obv#There are hotels and bnbs in every price range everywhere#There are cheap restaurants or street food stalls that locals also go to that won't give you food poisoning#I've never been to any of these countries but like logically#And based on what I've seen from other people#But backpacking content is always like omg these natives are so nice and humble 🥺#Asks

i hate having four fucking ads on a 20-minute podcast episode.
(it's a rant, enjoy.)
no, i don't want to get your shitting plus subscription, i don't even pay for 95% of the films and shows i watch online. stop fucking begging for patrons, it's not our problem you want to do this full-time. good for you if you do it but it's not somehow our duty to get you there just because you're a creator. not everyone can afford 60 fucking subscriptions. instead of people getting the minimum to at least get by as a basic human right, i bet like 85% of creatives online are making elite clubs on patreon and shit for those who have spare money. i get that you need it, but so many people (especially PDA neurodivergents) are extremely put off by being asked to pay and won't do it (like me) just because of that. i've encountered art that had the option to pay without requiring it, and I did. because they deserved it anyway, and they understood the classism and capitalism ingrained in the internet creative culture and that a lot of people don't have the means to become members of the club. i'm planning on starting a podcast, been wanting to publish fiction in paper since i was a kid, and i still want to make all that 100% free with the option of payment, because i believe that knowledge, stories and art should be accessible to anyone, regardless of financial situation (what do you think libraries are for, hm?????). when it's not, that's when elitism starts to rise and i'm just too tired for that shit. the empty snobbery culture around modern art alone is driving me insane.
Starkid has been recording their performances for years and guess what - they're massive, they sell out, people attend their live plays for the experience, but those who can't are still able to be a part of the fandom (as opposed to broadway musicals that get shared through bootlegs, hm) and they don't expect their fans to be responsible for their means of living. people who want to see a live performance, to buy your book in a bookshop professionally bound and keep it, to thank you for making your day by buying you a coffee will do so of their own free will. don't beg them to pay for your groceries if you made the choice to put your art out there. it's the system that is responsible for taking care of your basic needs, not your fans.
#shoutout to#the amelia project#because the ads in there drove me to this rant.#dear philip thorne. please do kindly shut up#can you leave all your begging to the end so i can skip it#i know i'm gonna offend someone by this post and to be clear: i'm not sorry.#the far-right is built on the mindset of individualism which means everyone is on their own and weak if they need help#while still requiring everyone to keep up with the insane standards.#far-left IS NOT GOOD EITHER TO BE CLEAR#WE NEED A BALANCE#but making us pay for each other's living costs is a distraction from#those who barely notice the difference of losing 2000 bucks#we should be able to go to work and make art without stressing over barely paying for rent and how much the month's food costs#not because we need to fight to survive but because we love being alive.#AND I'M CZECH. it's so much better here in comparison to so many countries.#so that's it i'm tired bye
